Turn It Up (12")
Cat: AFS 038. Rel: 30 Jun 20
  1. Turn It Up (7:48)
  2. Turn It Up (instrumental Disco mix) (7:49)
Review: Afrosynth Records has become renowned for its deep dives into the colourful, synth-heavy world of original South African disco, boogie and bubblegum. They're at it again here, offering up a fresh pressing of "Turn It Up" by Adaye, a one-off studio project featuring members of legendary South African 'supergroup' Stimela. This edition replicates the track listing of the original 1983 release, beginning with the A-side vocal version - a driving slab of bubblegum boogie laden with James Brown style lead vocals, colourful synth sounds and delay-laden drum machine beats. The flipside "Instrumental Disco Mix" naturally strips out all but the backing vocals, instead showcasing the intricacy of the studio outfit's Prince-style guitar riffs, jaunty bass and kaleidoscopic synthesizer flourishes.

Mamezala (12")
Cat: CASA 1202. Rel: 25 Jun 20
  1. Mamezala (4:19)
  2. Never Give Up (4:58)
Review: The Bees were a product of the late 80s South African music scene. They were an unknown band even in their homeland but its hard to see why given their happy kwaito sound. Now, 30 years later, international diggers are bringing the outfit the acclaim they deserve after the band was rather forgotten because they never had a big crossover hit in their early years. Here two of their best tracks are served up by Dutch label La Casa Tropical. They're lit up with pixelated synths and retro-future vibes that European party people love to get down to. "Mamezala" is the more considered of the two, while "Never Give Up" is a strident and rousing proto-house anthem with plenty of boogie in the bass.

  2. Eruobodo (4:52)
  3. Ijotiya (5:12)
  4. Love Is The Only Way (5:56)
Review: Given that Pedro Vian's Modern Obscure Music is renowned for its' off-kilter, unusual and often inspired releases, we shouldn't be surprised that this EP's take on West African music is far from traditional. It comes courtesy of Bep Kororoti (best known for his work as Kresy) and Akin, who adds vocals and saxophone parts. Check first the rubbery Afrobeat/heep house/metallic electrofunk fusion of brilliant opener "Epomuyen", before moving on to "Eruododo", a more bass-heavy affair which pushes Akin's Fela-style vocal and sax parts higher in the mix. Over on side B, "Ijotiya" is a more low-slung fusion of dub disco and Afrobeat, while "Love Is The Only Way" cloaks the pair's West African vocals and horn sounds in woozy deep house electronics.

  1. Oye Como Va (4:20)
  2. Dance Dance (3:49)
Review: This is a Juno Exclusive from French producer Djar One that lifts off and cruises all the way to Puerto Rico. "Oye Como Va" is the breakbeat fuelled a-side with huge funk drive, oodles of instrumental flair and lively percussive sounds that bring that vital world flavour. "Dance Dance" on the reverse is a quicker jam with Latin flair to spare. It trills with summery time joy and drives on kicking drums. The fun loving vocals are the irresistible finishing touch. Both of these cuts will blow up and club, wherever you are in the world.

  4. Funky Disco Music (Riccio rerub) (7:46)
Review: Afro disco fresh from 79: Eko Roosevelt Louis's third album Funky Disco Music will go down as one of Cameroon's finest disco LPs. Produced and pressed by French label Dragon Phenix, it's still reasonably easy to track down, too. For a taster, grab three of its tropical charms on this Fly By Night repress: "Funky Disco Music" is an infectious vocal-led cut that's written solely to make people get down, "Ndolo Embe Mulema" struts with much more Afro rock fusion while the harmonies of "Bowa'a Mba Ngebe" are sweeter than the finest honey you've ever tasted. For contemporary kicks Riccio has expertly touched the title track for a modern dancefloor/DJ friendly punch. Perfect.

  3. On M'a Dit (Bufiman Prog Frog mix) (4:56)
  4. On M'a Dit (Bufiman Disco instrumental) (5:06)
Review: Versatile Records boss Gilb'r claims he still doesn't know who Floco Floco is, despite snapping up the shadowy artist's first release as soon as he heard it. It sounds a bit like a tall tale to us, but it doesn't matter; "On M'a Dit" is brilliant. In its' "Full Length Vocal Mix" form, it's a driving fusion of dub disco, acid house and lo-fi synth-boogie rich in vintage- synthesizers and trippy effects. Gilb'r provides a short and sweet, pitched-down reprise that's warm and woozy in tone, before Jan Schulte dons the Bufiman guise to deliver two contrasting takes: a dazzling, all-action, club ready "Disco Instrumental", and a beat-free "Prog Frog Mix" that sits somewhere between the Orb, Tangerine Dream and Terry Riley's synthesizer works.

Baila Chibiquiban (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: MSR 019. Rel: 21 May 20
  1. Baila Chibiquiban (3:08)
  2. Baila Chibiquiban (Tonton Boom edit) (4:15)
Review: Late last month, Matasuna Records successfully mined "Ritual", the sought-after 1971 album by Nico Gomez and his Afro-Percussion Inc (a studio combo helmed by Belgian composer Joseph van het Groenewoud), and reissued one of the standout tracks, "Lupita". Here they serve up another gem from the album, "Baila Chibiquiban", an Incredible Bongo Band-esque fusion of psychedelic rock, heavy funk and even heavier Afro-Cuban percussion. The fine original version is given the re-edit treatment on the flip, with Tonton Boom extending some percussive passages and emphasizing the killer groove before introducing some of the track's headier musical elements. It's the kind of rework that should find favour with proper break-dancers.

  1. King Most - "Rhythm Rug" (My Favorite edit Ever) (3:29)
  2. Altered Tapes - "Ego Drip" (Outta This Horn remix) (4:20)
Review: If hot-to-trot and heavyweight funk re-fixes are your thing, you should already be familiar with the work of Chicago-based Heat Rock Records. Their latest limited seven-inch delivers two must-check workouts. On the A you'll find the "Rhythm Rug" edit by San Francisco scalpel fiends King Most, a cut-and-paste concoction that peppers a sunny, hip-hop tempo good-time soul-funk groove with excerpts from the acapella version of rap classic "Can I Kick It?" Over on the flip, label regulars and Windy City heroes Altered Tapes provide something even wilder: a hot-stepping fusion of Afro-jazz horns, dancehall style drums and what sound like occasional Q-Tip vocal snippets.

  1. Hoyt Oppe (4:42)
  2. Lopebass (5:14)
Review: Summer is here and there are few finer musical companions than this steamy 7" from Scandinavian soundsmiths the Lyskestrekk crew. Leoparden steps up for this one with an inimitable sense of coy funk, bubbly pop, bendy synth colour and deep and lazy groove. "Hoyt Oppe" simmers with a late night r&b charm that is all romantic and intimate with squidgy bass. On the flip, "Lope Bass" goes for a retro tinged 70s vibe with subtle acoustic riffs and a sexy strut all getting you in the mood. Once the astral led synth breaks out of the mix, the journey really takes off and boogie infects your bones.

  4. Nestor Alvarez - "Bang The Bongo" (2:52)
Review: The Original Gravity label's latest must-check missive is unusual, featuring as it does four tracks squeezed on to one limited edition seven-inch single. As the title suggests, it's Latin-themed, with two artists (overseen by Welwyn Garden City-based producer Neil Henderson) delivering two sweaty South American funk workouts apiece. Luchito Rodriguez handles side A, delivering the Tito Puente style mambo brilliance of "Hey Guajira Baby" and the insatiable, fienishly fuzzy Latin funk/boogaloo business that is "Vacilon". Over on the flip, Nestor Alvarez first offers up a beefed-up, bass-heavy taken on a familiar mambo favourite ("Lupita"), before sprinting towards heavy Latin funk territory on the insatiable "Bang The Bongo".

  3. Djidjo Vide (feat Elikeh - Jose Marquez remix) (8:06)
  4. Lift It Up Again (6:21)
Review: Given the struggles the World has faced this year, the escapist hedonism of the Sol Power Allstars - a jubilant, floor-friendly fusion of African, Caribbean, South and North American influences - feels like a much-needed shot in the arm. They're at their celebratory best on Sol Power Sound's tenth release. Vocalist Massama Dogo and guitarist Frank Martins lead the line on impressive opener "Va Se Da", a contemporary slab of Afro-house goodness. The accompanying dub, a tougher, sweatier and more bass-laden proposition, makes the most of the previously buried horns courtesy of LA band Jungle Fire. On the flip, Jose Marquez provides a suitably spacey, percussion-rich, Afro-synth style rework of classic Sol Power cut "Djidjo Vide", while "Lift It Up" is a sleazy slab of trippy Afro-acid with added hazy horns.

  7. Nacao Africa (part 2)
Review: Eagle eyed diggers might have spotted Camarao Orkestra's excellent Nacao Africa 12" single dropping last year on Favorite Recordings. Now the promise of that single has been followed up with this wonderful album - a scintillating blend of Latin jazz, funk, samba, Afrobeat and much more besides. The playing is second to none, not least the gorgeous Rhodes on "Dia De Verao", and the energy pivots nimbly across these seven tracks to make for a varied but cohesive listen. Uptempo "Guerreiro Yoruba" is an infectious stomper, while "Copacabana" captures a cool 70s funk vibe that wouldn't sound out of place on a Rufus & Chaka Khan record. With the title track bringing the perfect laid back party flavour too, there's a lot to savour on this album, not least while the sun is shining.

Review: It would be fair to say that "Camaleon" - Spanish for "chameleon", fact fans - is a fitting title for the debut album by Carlos "Caribombo" Guillen. Born to Colombian and Venezuelan parents, but now living in France, the percussionist/DJ/producer makes music that not only draws on his South American roots, but also his love of contemporary music from all four corners of the globe, be it the tropical sounds of Mauritius, Afro-house, Portuguese kuduro, Jamaican dub or British bass music. As a result, the Venezuelan's debut album a tropical, multi-coloured treat that's joyfully hard to describe. Don't take our word for it: give it a listen ASAP!

Review: Since Dijbouti gained independence in 1977, no music made in the tiny East African nation has been released internationally. Yet the country is blessed with some superb musicians, many of which play for Groupe RTD, the in-house musical ensemble of the state broadcaster. "The Dancing Devils of Dijbouti", their brand-new debut album, was recorded after hours at the RTD studio and offers thrilling glimpse into the unique musical fusions popular in the country. From start to finish, the album offers up a succession of sublime cuts that somehow join the dots between Bollywood-style vocals, NYC jazz, Somalian funk, Middle Eastern synthesizer sounds and, most surprisingly of all, Jamaican dub and reggae. It's a stunning and genuinely eye-opening combination.
