Review: Legendary alto saxman Marion Brown played on seminal albums by the likes of John Coltrane. For that reason, few sit close to him when it comes to the creative powerhouses of the 1960s avant-garde jazz movement. His Porto Norvo album was recorded during a 1967 session in the Netherlands and is regarded as one of his best works. Bassist Maarten van Regteben Altena and drummer Han Bennink joined the session and after it being out of print for many decades before now it gets a long overdue reissue on high-quality wax. Do not sleep.

Review: Record Store Day and Black Friday 2023 continue to serve up the treasure even now as we roll into 2024. This latest pice, Creative Improvisation Ensemble, is from Marion Brown and Leo Smith who explore an experimental and avant-garde world of challenging jazz. It is freeform, unbound by rules and expectations and very much keeps you on your toes as the saxophones burst to life, express tortured emotions and peel away to nothing. Some cuts are more heavily percussive with tribal drums like 'And Then They Danced' and others are persuasive numbers that make you move.

Review: Mel Brown's Chicken Fat album is the latest to get the reissue treatment by the good folks at Verve. The guitarist's 1967 Impulse! debut is said to be one of the funkiest and most original the late ever put out. His signature picking style is clean and bluesy and was honed while he played with legends like John Lee Hooker's and T-Bone Walker's bands. There is also plenty of well swung soul-jazz in the great organ work and for this version the original audio has been transferred from the analog tapes to nice heavy vinyl.

Review: This stunning album from Sarah Brown pays tribute to gospel icon Mahalia Jackson with a series of covers that mark her out as a real talent. The redemption songs truly hit deep and different and the authoritative vocal turns leave you in awe from front to back. The album is a payback for all the inspiration Brown has taken from Jackson's work, and first came to mind when she was singing on the Roxy Music reunion tour all the way back in 2000. It might have been a long time coming, but the wait was worth it.

Review: The Pavilion Of Dreams was first conceived by Harold Budd in the early 1970s. He started writing an extended cycle of compositions that were produced by Brian Eno. Also appearing in the session were saxophonist Marion Brown and a pair of multi-instrumentalists in Gavin Bryars and Michael Nyman. The album was a cathartic one for Budd who said at the time that is "erased my past," and lead to a musical rebirth. "It was like my Magna Carta." It sure is a soothing listen, with heavenly ambient sounds, mellifluous chords and glowing harmonies all soothing the mind, body and soul as they gently unfold.

Review: After years spent delivering heady fusions of deep funk and Afro-funk on Daptone Records, The Budos Band resurface on Diamond West, an imprint founded by two of the band's key members earlier this year. Their first missive on the California-based imprint is as rousing and fiery as ever, with their usual riotous and heavyweight sound being subtly expanded via nods towards psych-funk, Mariachi Band music and the funk-rock sound made famous by Sly and the Family Stone. Review: On first conceiving her latest album There Is Only Love And Fear, Bex Burch jumped into her car and drove eight hours across Europe to Utrecht in November 2021. While experiencing mostly good things on the trip, Burch admitted, "mostly life isn't like that," but "occasionally things just fall into place." An inspired recording process ensued while living between London and Berlin, producing a new folktronic take on domestic music, getting at the "simplicity of life and sound-making" while basking in the prepared creature comforts of the home; a "messy minimalism" of close-up electro-acoustic honesty and quaintness.

Review: The Tone Poet series from Blue Note continues apace with this reissue of Kenny Burrell's masterful self-titled album. As guitarists go, Burrell has a sound which dances with nimble eloquence few could even dream of matching. Hear him cavorting across 'Be Happy' and it's quite hard to imagine the notes were played by human hands. Despite that, it's also a wonderfully delicate, rounded sound which more than makes it worthy of an entry into this series - just marvel at that tone, captured across a variety of spots in New York in the spring of '56.

Review: The Tone Poet series from Blue Note recently reissued legendary American guitarist Kenny Burrell's self-titled album, which was recorded in 1956 across several of New York's finest venues. Now it looks to his KB Blues album which came a year later and was his third session as a Blue Note label leader in the studio of legendary producer Rudy Van Gelder in New Jersey. His signature playing style comes to the fore with Horace Silver on piano, Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Doug Watkins on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. The album features their take on Silver's 'Nica's Dream' and Burrell's 'Out for Blood' plus two different takes of Burrell's easy-going 'K.B Blues.' A really swinging set.

Review: Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Butcher Brown are a five-piece band with a solid run of heavy-grooving records behind them, but they're switching things up on this new record for Concord Jazz. The album finds band member Tennishu leading as he grips the mic for a big band approach to hip-hop which draws on the band's considerable skills to render a widescreen twist on rap with more than a little jazz informing the sound. Nodding to past hip-hop legends (shouting out Biggie Smalls on 'Unbelievable', for example) but bringing their own bold and brassy sound to the fore, this is an assured and hard-funking record with mass appeal.

With its fusion of genres, the album broke new ground and paved the way for future jazz explorations that Pitchfork have said is one of the best albums of the 1960s.
