Review: First published in 1988, The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul was the second adventure written by Douglas 'Hitchhiker's Guide' Adams to feature the relentlessly intrigued, somewhat hapless and unsuccessful but nonetheless likeable and psychically-abled private detective, Dirk Gently. More recently catapulted to Netflix fame via the offshoot US series, for those who don't know a thing about all this, think literate British comedy with an overwhelming sense of mystery.

Back to this instalment, the yarn is named after the idea that there's a weird witching hour just before Sunday evening, when the weekend has concluded but the week is yet to begin, leaving working people in something of a limbo. This translates as a music industry guy asking Gently for help with a scythe-wielding monster that's stalking him, a job we assume isn't actually real. Until the client winds up dead, and the search for what happened to him really begins.

Review: A release that honours the centenary of Alessandro Alessandroni's birth with a collection of previously unreleased tracks from the iconic composer and multi-instrumentalist. This album uncovers a hidden chapter of Italian film scores and library music, featuring Alessandroni's lesser-known work between 1969 and 1978 for war documentaries and films. Paesaggio Bellico isn't just a military march through battlefields but a deeply nuanced exploration of war's human and existential facets. Alessandroni expertly balances sweeping, cinematic themes with moments of tension and unease. His compositions juxtapose stark, unsettling imagery with softer, more hopeful tones that has a poignant counterbalance to the brutality of conflict. The maestro's signature whistle floats over gentle 12-string guitar melodies, while his fuzz-laden Fender Stratocaster electrifies more intense passages. The Cantori Moderni, Alessandroni's trusted vocal ensemble, contribute haunting vocals that delve into the psychology of warfare. An elegant string section adds layers of drama and sentiment, enhancing the album's orchestral weight. With 18 tracks in total, the release is visually enriched by Eric Adrien Lee's cover art, which reimagines the bold design of 1970s Italian war-themed records. With a tip-on hard cover and a unique inner sleeve, the vinyl is a fitting tribute to Alessandroni's enduring legacy, blending sonic and visual storytelling into a truly special release.

Review: Holy Basil turn their attention back to the rich seam of Italian library music with this choice reissue of Alessandro Alessandroni's Storie Di Guerra, originally released in 1972 on Octopus Records. It's a magical collection of themes and incidentals which range from psychedelic piano sequences to oddly angled cellos and squalling guitars, offering some of the edgiest material Alessandroni ever committed to tape. It's meant to evoke the sense of war, so you get the picture about the atmosphere the library music giant was aiming for when he recorded this one.

Review: This is a crucial reissue of another much sought after record by the revered Alessandro Alessandroni. Originally released in a few hundred copies on the cult Sermi imprint in February 1968, it features famous vocals from his wife that cane best described as scat over Italian Library music beats. Jazz styles, bouncy breaks groovy pop, lounge moods, big bossa tunes and much more all feature along the most absorbing of musical trips. This is a true landmark of the genre and one of many classics from this wizard.

Review: Much of Alessandro Alessandroni's material is just being rediscovered now, thanks to all these reissues out of the Spettro New label. It's a deserved act, because the Italian multi-instrumentalist is a true pioneer of experimental music who, for one reason or another, never really permeated into the minds of leftfield enthusiasts in the same way as other like-minded musicians of the time. Il Tempo Dello Spirito is from 1971 and, alongside the plethora of his other albums, is a marvel; the album is a spiritual journey from start to end, and one that is capable of causing a tear to shed from the eyes of even the most string-hearted. Made up of apocrypha hymns, it is themes stirring, open-minded interpretation of church music that we've ever heard. A truly fascinating experience.

Review: Zone Black almost never was. The KPM music library originally commissioned Emil Amos to make a collection of new material which could be used in television and film. A little way into this process, the executive who did that hiring departed, and the artist opted to take what was there to the Drag City label in a bid to turn it into a proper album. The end result is something between the two. For all intents and purposes, plenty here fits into the library definition, but this is a far more personal, deeper and coherent take on the format. The foundations of library music - commercial use - soon thrown out with the dishwater, and instead the focus was on creating movements and arrangements that would hold up on their own, and create entire narratives independently, for themselves. Removed from what's happening on screen, you can live in these tracks and nowhere else.

Review: Blue Foundation returns with another lush and immersive album that deepens their signature blend of dream pop, shoegaze and ambient electronics. Crafted over three years by the much loved Danish duo Bo Rande and Tobias Wilner, Close to the Knife explores themes of melancholy and introspection through layered textures and haunting vocals from Wilner and Nina Larsen. Guest appearances from Scarlet Rae, Helena Gao, and Sonya Kitchell enrich its emotional depth, while contributions from Chinese experimental noise band Wang's Xie Yugang and drummer Federico Ughi add complexity to this shapeshifting soundtrack.

It's another magnificently seductive and sophisticated collection of funk, jazz, spy-thriller soundtracks, late-night lounge moments and evocative atmospherics. Blaxploitation era composers such as Willie Hutch and Melvin Van Peebles and the genius of Roy Bud are particular preference points in this one and each cut is brilliantly authentic and lovingly crafted. This series started back in 2019 and four years later it is still going strong.

Review: After an impressive first volume last year, ATA Records are back with more of their Library Archive sounds. Inspired by greats such as KPM and DeWolfe but with a raw Leeds twist, this collection was produced on an array of old analogue gear across a series of sessions. Opener 'The Glass Eye' sets a psyched-out 60s funk feeling from the off then there are more upbeat and prickly pieces with lush flute leads likes like 'Windie Man' and raw, break-driven joints like the deep cut 'Fight Or Fuzz.' Word is that more volumes of this are planned in future, which we're glad to hear.

Review: The latest reissue from the reliable Sonor Music Editions camp comes from Italian jazz guitarist Angelo Baroncini and fellow axe-slinger Bruno Battisto D'Amario, a musician better known for his contributions to Ennio Morricone's Spaghetti Western soundtracks. Music For Movement was initially recorded for an Italian music library in 1969, and saw the duo deliver a string of wonderfully psychedelic instrumental workouts. There are fuzzy, distortion-laden heavy rock smashers, surf-rock inspired curiosities and, most bizarrely of all, tracks that sound like Ennio Morricone after copious amounts of high-strength lysergic acid. It's utterly bonkers, but also really rather good. Sonor Music Editions only pressed up 500 copies, so cop one while you still can.

Review: A narrative. An odyssey. The journey of a lifetime. As the world locked itself away and the Covid-19 pandemic took hold, Battaglia stepped into the record studio and evidently fired up the ignition rockets. Travel in the literal sense may have been off the cards, but Season One certainly transports the listener through a deep and complex sonic tapestry, telling a tale of struggle from fear into hope and onto something altogether unique and new and enlightened. Plenty here has been inspired by the aural work of John Carpenter and Tangerine Dream, to name but two influences, but ultimately where Battaglia is taking us feels resolutely new. More so, tangibly unchartered. Out to the farthest reaches of the known galaxy and back again in a stunning collection of strange and beguiling electronic business.

Review: Library music maestro and original member of The Shadows Brian Bennett has a raft of sought-after records to his name, but this is surely one of the most prized. As with the best library music, the execution of the compositions is impeccable - like slipping on silken luxury leisurewear for your ears. The record has been a rich source for sampling over the years, so half the joy is in spotting licks and loops from your favourite tunes, but equally these disco-fied delicacies funk all on their own. Lovers of the Black Devil Disco Club vibe will be more than happy getting down to these tasteful cosmic groovers, unbelievably repressed for just the first time on Isle Of Jura since the original release in 1978.

The Dreams (1977 Repeat Closing Annoucement)
Review: A long awaited, bumper six album pack of music and voice assembled by Delia Derbyshire of Radiophonic Workshop fame, and broadcast on four shows between January 1964 and September 1965, collectively known as Inventions for Radio. These experimental, longform shows were conceived by playwright Barry Bermange and were made up of the voices of callers-in, speaking on four themes: dreams, the existence of God, life after death and ageing. The participatory nature of these shows deviated massively from the radio status quo of the time, and the participants were selected to eschew the standard received drawl of most 60s radio presenters.
The music and editing was done by Derbyshire, whose avant garde sonic settings lend the audio an enigmatic, spectral quality. Although she was not credited for her contribution, nor were the broadcasts available commercially, they still developed a cult following. Silva Screen now presents the four broadcasts in their entirety, each on a separate LP, with two LPs of bonus material, and a booklet of detailed notes by producer Mark Ayres and David Butler of the Delia Derbyshire Archive. An elusive and essential landmark of 20th century sound collage.

Review: Danielle Boutet's Pieces is a mysterious artifact of Quebecois marginalia, self-released in 1985. Seeming to land squarely in the French no wave niche, yet nonetheless defying it through sinister inversions of the form, the reissued album comes as a reminder of Boutet's impressive command over atmosphere and narrative. Arabesque monologues in her native French soar over warblingly warm arpeggios, which sound ready-primed for traversals of Transylvania, while the more languid cuts make use of impressively synthetic emulations of what could otherwise sound like affectedly acoustic instruments, such as the "harmonica" on 'En attendant l'aube'. This is a welcome unearthing of an otherwise unconscious album, made in the space between REM sleep and authentic, out-of-the-limelight living.

The record paid stunning homage to 1970s library LPs and soundtrack compilations in great depth and detail. Now, the long-awaited sequel, Iniquitous, follows in its footsteps. This reissue restores the 1970 cut in full, swirling through ghostly organ grooves and spiralling rhythm sections with a clarity that feels startlingly fresh. 'Psichefreelico (Sostenuto)' and 'Bacharachico' glide between dreamy lounge and scorched delay-drenched oddness, while 'Africaneidico' pulses with loose Afro-Latin syncopation. Mined from Italy's golden age of library music and remastered from mono tapes, it's a masterclass in instrumental storytellingivivid, woozy and totally transportive.

Review: Readings (excerpts) from legendary American figure of the beat generation William S Burroughs from two of his most famous books. The Nova Express was part of a Trilogy, alongside The Soft Machine and The Ticket That Exploded. It employed the infamous 'fold-in' method of writing which involved re-assembling different variations of texts into the novel, almost like a literary remix or Dadaist poem. Naked Lunch was considered the sequel to the trilogy; a semi-autobiographical story which follows the protagonist William Lee and his struggles with substance abuse across the globe, but mainly in the dreamlike Interzone while in Tangier.

Review: Throbbing Gristle fans, watch out, because your panties are likely to be sent into a spin thanks to this latest reissue by the ever-impressive LA NYC label Dias Recordings. In 1981, Genesis P-Orridge collaborated with writer William S Burroughs in what would be the last ever release on Industrial and one which was also significantly different from the label's previous outings. There are fifteen tracks of Burroughs' voice cut up and twisted into a sort of patchwork of sounds. Coming from a mixture of readings and field recordings, the words have been moulded into a rather foreboding picture. Then again, you wouldn't expect anything else from the TG member. Limited to 1,000 copies and pretty darn essential.

Burroughs, known for macabre classics like Junky and Naked Lunch. First laid to record in the 50s and 60s, the rare recordings were later picked up by Throbbing Gristle members Genesis P-Orridge and Peter Christopherson, who sensitively compiled Burroughs' already spectral murmurings into a comprehensive and listenable final LP. This reissue comes via Dais, and once more provides a window into the troubled personal life of the writer, who desperately sought to escape city life.

Review: Cult beat writer, famous drug taker and frankly rather impenetrable mind William S Burroughs is a favourite of Will Self and hung out with Francis Bacon in Tangiers where many outsiders of that time would convene. Break Through In Grey Room is an album released back in 2012 that collects totters his cut-up speeches and recordings of performances between the years of 1960 and 1975. Some are pieces, some are discussions of pieces, all jump back and forth between the conscious to the subconscious are make for challenging but rewarding listening.

Review: This is an exclusive indie version of this unique record on clear vinyl. It's another collection from cult beat writer and the wonderous mind of William S Burroughs, an American who ended up in Tangiers where many outsiders of that time would convene. Break Through In Grey Room is an album released back in 1986 that collects together his cut-up speeches and recordings of performances between the years of 1960 and 1975. Review: RECOMMENDED
If you're interested in this record then you're interested in this record. Even if this is your first encounter with Burroughs, it takes only a few lines to understand not only his command of language, but his ability to convey the despicable, maligned, dejected and disillusioned in truly evocative ways. If this isn't your first encounter with Burroughs, then this twisted revenge tale audio book comes with a back story that will make you fall in love with the author all over again.

First published in 1971, Ali's Smile was released as a one-sided LP in a run of 99 copies. It was sold with a hardback copy of the audio, and in the UK there was only one store you could buy it from - Brighton's Unicorn Bookshop. As far as we've been told, the owner was a guy called Bill Butler and was paying off costs from a previous obscenity trial. Boroughs gave him the rights to this recording.

Review: These works by revered American beat poet William Burroughs appear here in two parts. Their original format lasted for over an hour, first appearing in in the late 90s as a free CD with the French magazine Crash. The CD was quickly withdrawn, with only approximately 100 copies finding their way into circulation. The Curse Go Back LP utilises Burrough's long employed techniques of Dadaist style cut-ups of readings. He was in London from the mid-50s through to 1974, residing in Piccadilly. It was allegedly in this particular period that he further honed the techniques he used for creating cut-ups on tape, working alongside Ian Sommerville. Pressed on transparent vinyl in a numbered edition of 500.

Review: Lounge singer Richard Cheese presents his 28th studio album and it is a heartfelt collection of melancholy saloon ballads styled after classic Frank Sinatra Capitol Records concept albums. Featuring 12 newly recorded tracks for 2024, the album pairs Cheese's sincere vocals with rich orchestrations and wistful piano and super covers along the way including Radiohead's 'Lucky,' The Offspring's 'Self Esteem,' R.E.M.'s 'South Central Rain,' Harry Styles' 'As It Was' and Lana Del Rey's 'The Greatest.' It makes for a record full of soulful, nostalgic interpretations.

Review: Richard Cheese is a lounge music legend. He has various trademarks such as his tiger-striped tuxedo and his enormous microphone, as wells his snappy jazz trio. They make for mix of music and martini vibes and back in 200 they dropped their debut album Lounge Against The Machine, wittingly named in reference to iconic rockers Rage Against The Machine. The album is now reissued and features original "early" versions of some favourite Cheese songs, all of which were later re-recorded with a real live big band feel but here retain a more real and raw edge.

Review: A new spate of Tele Music library classics reissues from the 70s houses this one from 1976. Once more, legendary composer and drummer Pierre Alain Dahan hears his timely work reissued - this time in collaboration with his eternal guitar colleague Slim Pezin, a many-timed collaborator with Dahan. Contrasting to Dahan's many more experimental works, such as the prototypical 'Rhythmiques' album (which is far more out-there, almost primordial-sounding) 'Neo Rhythmiques' is an absolute killer of scorching, uptempo jazzy soul-funk, demonstrating what humanity as whole has achieved since, by harnessing said rhythmic primordium for its own funky ends.

Review: Best known for his involvement in the Braen's Machine project alongside fellow film scorers Piero Umiliani and Alessandro Alessandroni - not to mention his work under the name Awake and Gisteri - maverick producer Rino De Filippi took a darker, introspective turn on the 1972 Flower Recs bloomer Condizione Umani. Jazz-pincered vignettes are heard piercing the fragile complexities of the mind, across a record whose shapeshifting veneer crosses streams of tension and revelation with an arachnid sleight of foot. With 'Crivellamento' standing out as a key marrying point of ritualistic percussion and avant-garde looseness, we're left spasmodic. Reissued again on standard and purple vinyl as part of the Sounds From The Screen series, we've an historic contribution on our ears from the Italian studio maestro.

It is a brilliantly authentic document of a very special time in the history of British music culture. Review: Talk about a time capsule. While the obvious nostalgists out there scour and share their cassette eight packs, desperately converting the mixes they contain to digital files before the inevitable unspooling renders the original recordings obsolete, here comes Death Is Not The End - a record label that lends its name to (well, hosts) a show on NTS Radio - with the ultimate trip back to a time many weren't lucky enough to live through.

As the name suggests, this is literally a collection of no less than 40 radio adverts that appeared at some point or other on London's once-plentiful pirate radio stations between 1984 and 1993. Many are poor quality in terms of production, a good number use samples from some of the biggest dance tracks of the day, loads namecheck some legends of the UK rave scene, and every single one would be loads of fun to drop into a mix or use as a sample for productions. Not that we're recommending doing anything without license.

Cat: DEATH 032LP. Rel: 04 Jul 24
Track 1 (27:22)
Track 2 (28:37)
Review: All Bad Boy & All Good Girl is a fascinating mixtape, first released in 2022, documenting the few and rare radio broadcasts that propagated a now-elusive, but decade-long, Mancunian form of street soul. Lasting from at least the mid-1980s to the mid 1990s, this exciting ream of 'extracts', here on the vinyl version coming as a playlist of nine, transports us right back to this scratchy, no-holds-barred chuggers' sound. Featuring DIY cassette recordings of bands such as Broadway, Stereo Dan and Soul Control playing live at dances and blues parties in south & central Manchester from 1988 through to 1996, Death Is Not The End do a stellar job as ever of compiling the most exquisite forgotten tracks in the style, as though they'd been beamed into the present through a trans-temporal airwave. Packed with the radio phase distortion, hiss, vocal and SFX interjections, dub sirens and delay-outs, this is much more than just a functional soulful soundclash.

Review: Death Is Not The End is one of those cult favourite labels that works hard so you don't have to. It deals in left of centre sounds from Armenian blues to jungle pirate adverts. Pure Wicked Tune: Rare Groove Blues Dances & House Parties 1985-1992 is a collection of gorgeous lo-fi soul sounds and heart-swelling disco-adjacent jams. Plenty of them come with some characterful mic work from various selectors over the top and they all add up to a real time warp that takes you back to this period in inescapably feelgood fashion.

Review: Demeters Dottrar, comprised of Ida Skibsted Cramer, Charlott Malmenholt, and Astrid Oster Mortensen, presents their debut album, Sondag I Spejlet, inspired by the sounds of 90s lo-fi experimental bedroom music and bold text-sound compositions that draws direction from the cassette underground scene. Recorded mainly in Gamlestaden, Gothenburg, the album's eight tracks offer a trip into a parallel universe, characterised by delicate instrumentation and recurrent sounds of rain, serving as a percussive backbone. Singing in both Swedish and Danish, the trio creates an atmosphere of brutal intimacy reminiscent of Deux Filles, while musically evoking the spirit of Un, early Charalambides, and Dadamah. Sondag I Spejlet stands as a daring debut, offering listeners a beautiful, strange, and other-worldly experience unlike anything heard before.

Review: Delia Derbyshire has rightly been getting the props she deserves in recent times, albeit many years after they were due. Best known for the pioneering work she did with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, she is in no uncertain terms one of the most innovative electronic musicians of the last century. Her album The Dream was written in the 19060s and is the result of being asked by British playwright Barry Bermange to create music for four of his radio plays. Fantome Phonographique reissue it now in all its rather desolate and eerie glory with subtle drones, spoken words and mystic motifs making it an intriguing listen.

Review: An LP which features music by originally recorded in 1969 by BBC Radiophonic Workshop members such as the late Delia Derbyshire, Brian Hodgson and the American born composer David Vorhaus: who later formed as the experimental electronic band White Noise. It was released by the Standard Music Library label, set up in 1968 by Bucks Music and London Weekend Television who also supplied production music for use in TV, commercials, radio and film. Many of these tracks were also used in the 1960's cult TV show 'The Tomorrow People' and each one has a short description of the music after the track title. Derbyshire and Hodgson assumed pseudonyms in the credits: Li de la Russe & Nikki St. George respectively. Two of the tracks are co-written by the pair, who also worked together on Unit Delta Plus: an organisation and studio project which was extensively involved in the promotion and exploration of electronic music at the time. Legendary stuff!

Review: Ukraine-born Maya Deren isn't your typical musician for label owner. She was, in fact, one of the most interesting film makers throughout the 40s and 50s, expanding the Western hemisphere's knowledge and appreciation for 'creole' sounds. Aside from the long line of visual arts, she did release one mythical record, back in 1954, on the infamous Elektra label. Voices Of Haiti is now a digger's choice, and a relic of library music, which has possibly shaped much of the 'outernational' fascination that has shaped the sound of imprints like Honest Jon's, Strut, Sounds Of The Universe etc. Recorded in villages and towns across Haiti, this magical LP is a deep and explorative foray into the deepest and most visceral sounds of the Caribbean, and we have been truly blessed with this timely reissue. Unmissable.

Review: The Fascinating World Of Electronic Music is one of those obscure but much loved and fetishized albums that we vinyl collectors fawn over. Dutch electronic music pioneers Tom Dissevelt and Kid Baltan wrote it back in 1959 and mixed jazz ideas with experimental electronic production and laid down a template for the sounds that would go on to define high profile shows like Dr Who, which was written by the great Delia Derbyshire at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. David Bowie was a big fan of this record while DJ Premier and David Holmes have pillaged it for samples. Newly remastered for this reissue, it is well worth diving deep into once more.

Review: DJ Muggs brings his latest instrumental hip-hop tinkerings to Madlib and Egon's Invazion Music Library Series, which allows the two beatmaking legends' friends the opportunity to experiment with the form in whichever way they choose. Taking after the mood and feel of library music pieces, Silver Cloud adds to the many additions to the label to pay homage to the Piero Umilianis and Alan Hawkshaws of yore, albeit through a hip-hop lens. From 'No Time' to 'Calm Down' to 'Fast Arp', Muggs takes a functional approach to beatsmithing, crafting everything from tempo-synced, two-tone moody piano expositions to full-blown lo-fi whackers.

Diggers Dozen is a real gem with 12 tracks of Japanese jazz-funk and Latin-jazz goodness that fuse traditional instrumental with traditional melodies. These tunes were originally made for the 70s for Nippon Columbia by legendary composers of the time such as Kiyoshi Yamaya, Tadaaki Misago & Tokyo Cuban Boys, Kifu Mitsuhashi, Toshiyuki Miyama and more. Finding these cuts on their original pressings is rare and expensive so don't sleep on this real collector's essential.

Review: Demon Records presents the complete narrated TV soundtrack of Doctor Who: The Crusade on double 140g green and yellow translucent vinyl. This release offers fans the chance to experience the classic 1965 story, with William Russell providing linking narration. Set in 12th Century Palestine, the Doctor (William Hartnell) and his companions find themselves in the midst of a conflict between English Crusaders and Saracen forces led by Saladin. When Barbara is captured during a Saracen ambush, the group encounters historical figures such as King Richard the Lionheart, played by Julian Glover. Though only two of the original four episodes survive, this vinyl edition captures the full audio experience, bringing the adventure to life once again. The release includes beautifully illustrated sleeves with Radio Times-style billings for each episode, offering a nostalgic touch.

Review: Following on from his stunning debut album, Giving You M.O.R.E., E Bobby G's sophomore effort reveals an artist returning to their groove, literally and figuratively, while expanding on the scope and stylistic touchstones to broaden the sonic horizon. Or, to put all that another way, this is Bobby doing Bobby better than the last time, which is saying something. Opening on glittering space-y ambient, the electronic funk and porto-electro soon takes centre stage, and it's hard not to feel captivated. Largely recorded after hours in the room above Bakehouse Studios, where Mr E-G works, there's a wonderfully lo-fi aesthetic throughout, making this feel retro, even if its release date says 2024, which may or may not have been aided by the loss of the home workspace he did LP number one on, and the need to make this follow up in a more temporary environment.

Review: El Michels Affair's Enter the 37th Chamber is a curious exploration of Wu-Tang Clan's iconic beats through live hip-hop instrumentation. While the reinterpretations offer unexpected detours and minor blasphemies, they maintain a sense of familiarity, the dynamic arrangements and hazy, psychedelic atmosphere capturing the sorrow and menace of classic Wu-Tang tracks from a different angle. Standouts like 'C.R.E.A.M.' and 'Criminology' reimagine the original compositions with new layers of instrumentation, while tracks like 'Protect Ya Neck' evoke the soulful vibes of Booker T. & the MGs. Although some interpretations may stray from the original spirit, Enter the 37th Chamber ultimately succeeds as a series of familiar touchstones filtered through El Michels Affair's unique sonic lens. It's a compelling listen for rap-geek curios and fans of sample-based music alike.

Review: The Globeflower Masters Vol 1 is a new Mr Bongo release that has been put together with classic soundtracks, 70s library music and cinematic compositions in mind. It was assembled in summer 2020 by Brightonian musicians Glenn Fallows and Mark Treffel who drew on their arsenal of vintage synths, pianos, 'other fun toys' and all manner of drums, guitars and bass. The result is a soothing album that will work in the dead of winter as well as the light of the summer thanks to its warm sounds, lush productions and luxuriant arrangements. A worth CD for any collection.

Review: Among the figureheads of French disco, Bernard Fevre, better known as Black Devil, probably had the shortest-lived career, but was among the brightest minds of them all. Although his first album Disco Club, released in 1978, went unnoticed at first, it has since become a must-have, a collector's item which has led a lot of listeners to further investigate his extensive work. Fevre experimented with such a wide gamut of styles that it has been hard not to lose track; though perhaps one such aide l'equilibre is this newest compilation/lookback record, Space Oddities 1976-1985. Spanning a huge swathe of Fevre's records, some more touted and others more waylaid, this compilation can only begin to help us firmly grasp the cosmic breadth of the artist's work, some of which is indubitably club-bound, some of which is comparatively cinematic and scenic. Here's hoping Giordano Bruno was wrong about the open universe - Fevre's explorations are so expansive that they verge on boundlessness.

Review: One of Norway's finest jazz artists, Alex Figueira, shares a surprise mini-album via Jazzaggression, whose solar-punky, psychedelic description of the record is as gleeful as the implied beam of light which emanates from behind the artist's front-cover printed visage, and on which the warped art nouveau typography detailing its title wafts: "a vibrant fusion of tropical rhythms layered with a dazzling array of synth-driven psychedelia." Said to have played every instrument on the LP himself, Figueira's ends are irreverent and sun-soaking; his ultra-obscure Norweigan tropical music scene is married well to the all-improv, time-pressed nature of the recordings going in, all of which were immured and hothoused behind the walls of Utrecht's Studio Pelto.

Review: The reissue of Fratelli Malibu's "Ciro Miami" brings a refreshed take on Andrea De Fazio and Paolo Petrella's imaginative project. Known for their work with the "Nu Guinea" live band, De Fazio and Petrella infuse "Ciro Miami" with a nostalgic yet futuristic soundscape, highlighting their deep love for synthesisers and drum machines. The album's music vividly portrays the escapades of Ciro, a Neapolitan emigre chasing the American Dream. Through a blend of bright synths and punchy drum patterns, it captures the allure of neon-lit nights, opulent car culture, and the dizzying highs and lows of excess. The tracks evoke the excitement of cocktail bars and gambling dens, as well as the pulsating rhythms of video games and space fantasies. The reissue offers a chance to rediscover the album's dynamic energy and creative ingenuity. The sound palette, characterised by its retro-futuristic vibe and vibrant melodies, not only celebrates the original release but also enhances its appeal to a new generation of listeners. The album's journey from euphoria to disillusionment, all conveyed through its infectious beats and shimmering textures, remains as captivating as ever.

Review: Frollen Music Library is a premium sample library and production house focused on live ensemble recordings and analogue production techniques. Drawing inspiration from the 60s and 70s - which is of course - the era that shaped hip-hop sampling, it provides producers with accessible, high-quality sample packs. Founded by long-time collaborators Darvid Thor, Henry Jenkins and Hudson Whitlock who are all active members of Melbourne's soul scene, the library offers a rich collection of sounds perfect for film, television and music productions. It's an essential resource for fans of artists like David Axelrod and Ennio Morricone and also makes for a good standalone listen.

Review: Neil Gaiman and Four Play String Quartet sold out the Sydney Opera House in 2010 and since then have rained firm finds and close collaborators. They have played all over the world together, written a best-selling book and record and performed to a packed out crowd at Carnegie Hall. Signs of Life is their new album and is another one that fights against any simple categorisation with freeform musical creativity. They bend genres, break new ground and draw on their own respective backgrounds as iconic author and a unique musical ensemble to make for something that is part songwriting, part poetry, part story-telling and utterly beautiful.
