The Labyrinth
The Labyrinth (limited 7" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: ZAMZAM 92. Rel: 17 Jul 23
The Labyrinth (4:09)
Minotaur Dub (4:11)
Review: Blind Prophet & Ishan Sound come together for their first pan-atlantic collaboration here in what is a fine return to the ZamZam label. The pair first met in Portland in 2019 and so it's good to finally have some sounds to get stuck into from their meeting of minds. 'The Labyrinth' kicks off with hefty and stepping drum rhythms that are overlaid by bright synth lines and mystic flutes. The interloping melodies and a menacing bassline finish it in style. On the flip, things get much more dark with 'Minotaur Dub' which is a shadowy world of refracting drums and oodles of reverb and echo. There is a predatory sense to the rhythm that never lets up as fizzing bass pries every deep into the dead of night.

Indica Dubs & Nando - "Dub Good" (3:44)
Review: Indica Dubs rolls out more of their steel-plated warrior anthems here with the in-house production team stepping up next to Nando for Eternal Dub. This crucial 12" opens with the title cut, which is a collab between the two that rolls on moody drums and has an enchanting melodic lead up top, snaking its way to a better future. The rework is 'Eternal Dubwise,' a more wet and bottomless affair, then Indica Dubs and Nando reunite for 'Sacred Fire' which is busier, more energetic, with broken beats and playful leads. Last of all comes the dub-wise rework that is menacing and dark for those late-night hours.

Icho Candy - "Pave The Way"
Yakka - "Pave The Dub"
Review: This is a brand new cut by Jamaican rootsman Icho Candy, who still ploughs on strong despite first making his way in the 1970s. Characteristically for Icho, 'Pave The Way' is a ghostly bop, coming packed with antistate political quips - "you reap the system... you reap your liberty" - and a hauntingly soft and almost defeated feel. Yakka comes through on the version, which begins with a beautiful set of harmonies before launching into a huge spring-reverbed, cavernous bubbling.

No Peace (version)
Review: Two previously unheard righteous anthems from the sweet-voiced Icho Candy. The A side, 'Get Up Natty' was cut at Channel One in the mid-eighties, with backing by the Gifted Roots Band, and features an instantly recognisable bed of squelchy FX, elastic synth leads and choppy upstrokes, while the flip is an emotive new cut featuring legends from the Firehouse and Channel One production camps on the riddim. It's great to hear Icho still in fine style, delivering a timeless anthem with a positive message. Both sides also include excellent dubwise versions. Another jewel in the constantly expanding Digikiller catalogue!

Leroy Sax Version (3:37)
Review: Firmly Rooted has done a great job of rolling outage rhythms over the last couple of years. The release rate and quality levels have remained high with the likes of breakout Leeds artist Breakface impressing back in May. Now, 18 months or so after their last outing, Ickle & Hotsteppas are back on the label with some more fresh dubs. First up, 'No Love, No Peace' Ft Prince Jaco is a big, fresh roller with great height and serious bass weight. The dub strips things back to melon-twisting echo and reverb and 'Mr Government' (feat Lionpulse) is an organic dub with brilliantly elastic bass. 'Leroy Sax Version' is a sax-laced dub of the same tune.

Indica Dubs - "Raw Dub Mix" (feat Indica dubs) (3:45)
Review: Over the last four years, Idren Natural's Dubolution-produced 'Jah Garden' - a steppers-powered roots/digi-dub fusion cut featuring a superb lead vocal - has been a dubplate special in Inidica Dubs' DJ sets. It's fitting then that they've finally decided to release it on their own label, with the killer original mix being joined by a trio of tasty dubs. Dubolution's own dub-style version is faithfully weighty and skeletal, while wisely emphasizing his own jazzy guitar licks, while Indica Dubs' flipside revisions are equally as potent. The 'Garden Dubplate Mix' is a punchy, full-throttle dancefloor dub workout, while the 'Raw Dub Mix' sounds like one of Mad Professor's wilder, heavier offerings.

Review: Indica Dubs is a gold standard when it comes to fresh digs-dub. Their sounds are both ancient and steeped in dub traditions but clean and crisp and designed to withstand the onset of time. Kicking off this latest outing is Indica Dubs & Nando with 'Eternal Dub' which has muted but uprising leads and Indica Dubs then go it and for a heavier, more stepping version, 'Eternal Dubwise.' On the flip is Indica Dubs & Nando with the more wonky and off balance sounds of 'Sacred Fire' which has bold leads and crashing hits. A fine dub completes this essential platter.

Review: Room In The Sky knows a thing or two about rock-solid dub and reggae and because of their work over the years, we do too. Often they serve up some classics with new versions from The Inn House Crew adding a fresh dub perspective. But this time it is The Inn House Crew who go it alone with a couple of their own hot-stepping tunes. 'Moonflute' kick off with mystic flute leads and stepping sequences that get you up on your toes as the bright and fresh reggae drums and percussion bristle next to sci-fi effects. 'Mozarmedi' is a slower, more traditional dub but with some gorgeous pianos.

They turn their hands to a range of stone cold Western classics and always bring a little sense of fun to their versions. Here it is Nirvana's Smells 'Like Teen Spirit' which they tackle and it is a much loved cut that always sells out, so now gets a reissue. Their take on 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was recently reissued to great acclaim recently and now we get two more gems. It's A Shame (4:18)
Review: Over the last decade, Inokashira Rangers have proved that you can turn pretty much any track - whether it's a TV theme tune, rave banger or grunge classic - into a reggae or rocksteady gem if you know what you're doing. They're at it again on their latest "45", which opens with a storming, largely instrumental reggae-soul version of Edwin Starr's 1968 soul classic '25 Miles'. Their version - full of reverb-laden drums, fuzzy organ motifs, mazy solos, warming bass and JB's guitars - is naturally hugely different to Starr's version, but recognisably the same song. Their flipside take on Spinners' classic 'It's a Shame' is rather more difficult, with the trio slowing it down to a skanking reggae crawl while retaining the familiar melodic refrain.

Review: By now, we should all be aware of Inokasira Rangers, Japan's premier exponents of undeniably excellent reggae and rocksteady covers of everything from Nirvana, Kraftwerk and New Order to Underworld and Radiohead. Here they put their spin on two more classic cuts. On side A, they turn Madonna classic 'Like a Virgin' into a cheeky rocksteady instrumental, with the pop megastar's vocal being replaced by heady Hammond solos. Over on the reverse, they go for a sun-splashed, Balearic-leaning instrumental reggae revision of A-ha favourite 'Take On Me'. Yes, it's a novel and unusual idea, but as ever they've executed it beautifully.

Review: Inokasira Rangers is a reggae band from Tokyo who've been around since the 1990s, but they're hardly (criminally) known outside of Japan. Their latest release, 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You,' promises to change that, covering Frankie Valli's timely original from the late '60s, not to mention Crystal Waters' dance-pop hit on the B. A Shibuya-kei sensibility runs through this sweet pair of covers, but the main mode is lo-fi reggae. The Waters cover is particularly charming, as if this were the original, and the song had existed as a folk song for generations prior to the glitzy rave version.

Joseph Lalibela's 'Jah Kingdom Come' kicks off with chest-beating chords over clean digi-dub synthesis with big horns and vocals up top. Here we're treated to another, as the band's 2017 take on Underworld anthem 'Born Slippy' gets a fresh pressing. It's certainly a revolutionary revision, with Keichi Sokabe's surprisingly Karl Hyde-sounding lead vocal rising above a lusciously languid, sub-heavy reggae groove. Over on the flip they take on 'Groove Tube', a 1991 indie-pop-meets-acid house single from Japanese outfit Flipper's Guitar, reframing it as a baggy, glassy-eyed rocksteady number.

Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. Champagne in Mozambique was the debut release from Ingleton Falls - AKA lesser-known producers Andy Eardley and Andy Seymour - and remains a laidback, saucer-eyed delight. Typical of the chill-out movement of the period, the mini album's five tracks effortlessly join the dots between ambient dub, psychedelic late night techno, drowsy downtempo grooves and horizontal instrumental synth-pop, with the duo peppering each production with trippy or amusing spoken word samples, intricate melodies and copies amounts of dub delay. It's a fine example of a necessary reissue: without Isle of Jura's intervention, few would be able to revel in its hazy, early morning charms.

Review: Four sides of cavernous, postmodern dub inna year 3000 style from the UK soundsystem circuit's hottest boyband: Mark Iration, Dennis Rootical & Rico O.B.F. The trio combine their years of experience crafting box rattling anthems, bringing a new irreverence, sparkle, and poppy playfulness to the classic UK roots template. This really shines through on cuts such as 'Calling Jahova' where washes of buzzsaw synth and Sheffield-type bleeps call to mind Gregory Isaacs' early 90s proto-grime oeuvre, and more austere bangers like the aptly named 'Serious Time', where trappy hi hat flurries and savage anvil snares offer up a taste of unashamed 00s steppa nostalgia, while also deftly channelling O.B.F.'s hip hop influence. Great cover too!

Review: Although he first entered a recording studio in the late 1960s, it wasn't until 1973, and the release of the Alvin 'G.G' Ranglin-produced single 'Love Is Overdue' that Gregory Isaacs career started to take off. The success of that record persuaded Ranglin to record an entire album with Isaacs, In Person, which became the now legendary reggae singer's debut full-length. This expanded edition of the album presents the album on disc one, alongside alternative dub versions and other singles Isaacs recorded with Ranglin during the period. Disc two, meanwhile, offers a celebration of Ranglin's other works of 1973 and '74 - Jamaican hit singles (and their corresponding dubs) which are largely lesser-known outside the Caribbean.

Review: Israel Movements is an 80's roots reggae band from Birmingham. Someone has been digging in the vaults and tuned out some multitrack tapes for this underrated opus so that they can be pressured. The talented band bring deep roots, mad steppers, dii sounds and on this version some newly extended dubs that really make their mark. 'No sniff, no coke, no heroin, just stick with sinsemilla' is a fine hook to kick off the opening track with and from there things remain essential as many different reggae styles are explored with great social-political commentary up top.

Review: Well? Time to swallow your pride and get some courage! Or, so said the supergroup Israel Vibration, who first channeled their anti-cowardliness message into song form with 'Why You So Craven' in 1982 via Arrival Records. A standout single, its namesake soon came to refer to an entire album of the same name, which is now reissued here via RAS. Aside from the damning condemnation of money and desire heard on the titular song, other star bits on the album include 'What's The Use' and 'Highway Robbery', flaunting their distinctive roots-radical vision (masterminded by none other than Scientist) and aim to impel the listener into conjuring a new world for themselves.

Review: After dropping many crucial dub albums on the likes of Twinkle Records, Music House Family, Reggae On Top, King Earthquake, and Conscious Sounds, Barry Issac now brings his brilliant vocal tones to Room In The Sky. Issac is well established as a top roots reggae talent who has worked with some of the most notable sound systems out there - Jah Shaka and Channel One being two of them. Here 12 tough riddims featuring some top talents like reggae trombonist Vin Gordon from the Skatalites and Winston Reedy who fronted The Cimarons get finished in style by his work up top. A timeless album for sure.
