Techno
Hells Bells (5:17)
Inner Heaven (6:50)
Power Hungry (4:00)
Purifier (5:34)
Review: US techno standout Selective Response, hardened in the depths of the Los Angeles underground, is admired for his driving, no-nonsense sound. To that end, he delivers a fierce collection of tracks here for Backspin that echo the Hardgroove energy of the early 2000s. With sharp percussion, rolling basslines and relentless momentum, this is rhythmic techno that bridges the gap between foundational legends and new-school innovators. 'Hells Bells' is a big wall of dense, rhythmic energy, 'Inner Heaven' lights up with squealing, glassy melodies that bring euphoria and 'Power Hungry' gets down and dirty. 'Purifier' is a zoned-out closer with a hallucinogenic back-lit glow.

Irma Thomas - "Let's Do It Over" (2:23)
Laura Lee - "Sure As Sin" (2:39)
Terry Callier - "Lover (Where Have You Gone)" (3:04)
Review: This special EP unearths hidden soul treasures from the late 60s and has powerful performances by Laura Lee and Irma Thomas that have an impact that far outweighs the modesty of the 7" they come on. Those two tunes were recorded at the legendary FAME Studios and originally released on Chess Records and also included are two of Afro-soul legend Terry Callier's most refined and emotive productions from the Cadet label/ They really underline his lush, orchestral take on soul with his own unique voice soaring to emotionally wrought heights. None of these tracks have been previously issued on 45 rpm and they are all sophisticated, heartfelt vintage magic from a golden era of Southern and Chicago soul.

Review: Seemingly unable to rest on any of their laurels for long, and already returning just a year on from 2024's noise-rock indebted sixth full-length Coagulated Bliss, ever-prolific grindcore stalwarts Full Of Hell are back with the ferocious Broken Sword, Rotten Shield EP. Featuring notably cleaner production than ever heard prior, the material pays homage to classic death metal motifs whilst eschewing the Melvins worship of their previous outing, with cataclysmic blasbeats and face-metling guitar solos underpinning vocalist Dylan Waker's inhuman shrieks and bellows. Commenting on the retro-style artwork featuring what can best be described as a "dog knight", Walker elaborates - "The dog knights represent these pure defenders against a world of darkness and the feeling of utter grief and defeat when we lose these companions. Along side that metaphor, the song also explains that in this world, all living things are rendered equal in the end, and for some that's a mighty fall."

Review: Sheffield artist Commodo - long a mainstay of Deep Medi and Black Acre - hooks up with Turkish dubstep producer Gantz again here to explore heavy low-end percolations on Ilian Tape's revered ITX Series. 'Left Hand Path' has earth-shattering kicks and scraping hits that are coated in lo-fi and grain pads for ultimate subterranean menace. '89! Gloom' is a more nimble rhythm with a slippery lead line bringing extra movement as the low-end throb keeps you locked. 'Shake And Lurk' closes out with some brighter melodic intrigue to bring a ray of optimism to the glory but brilliant bass.

Isle Of Stonesy (9:05)
Review: Lars Fischer aka Klangkollektor, returns with a serene and introspective EP that deepens his exploration of dub-infused ambient music. Drawing from his usual analogue instruments and effects, Fischer crafts a soothing soundscape where live basslines provide a warm, womb-like vibe and gentle synths and piano improvisations evoke images of birdsong and mountain streams. Tracks like 'Ferry from Torkwrith' and 'Isle of Stonsey' offer meditative journeys that fuse elements of dub techno with melodic richness. Fischer's ability to create music that serves as a refuge from the chaotic world is what sets him apart and invites you to take a moment of peace and introspection in his company.

I Miss Terry (7:58)
Purgatory (5:42)
Dad's Folk (mix) (7:02)
Electric Push (CPU mix) (5:31)
Review: Aussie Greville returns to Mad Habitat with a haunting four-track suite rich in "acoustic psychotomimesis". His masterful use of texture and atmosphere shines throughout and opener 'I Miss Terry' pairs sharp, restless drums with a pulsing bassline, while 'Purgatory' drifts like a hypnotic dreamscape across the stereo field. On the flip, ethereal vocals ebb and flow and add spectral layers to the sound of 'Dad's Folk (mix)', which is a wonderful curiosity. Closing with 'Electric Push,' which builds on the monologue of 'Dad's Folk,' the record ventures into surreal realms by smearing the experimental edge of Ifach-era Baby Ford with the dark mystique of late Coil.

Review: As it often does so well, Clone Classic Cuts revives two key early 90s gems from Toronto's Strobe Records here, in turn spotlighting the city's crucial but often overlooked role in North American dance music. The Hayden Andre Project delivers deep, percussive house with Detroit techno undertones so it's full of raw yet refined grooves that remain floor-ready decades on. On the flip, Ron Allen's 'Kingdom Come' alias channels New York-style soulful house with lush piano, swinging drums and a distinct Canadian warmth. These tracks showcase a moment when Toronto helped blur regional lines in the evolution of house music.

Review: Armin van Buuren is one of the most enduring trance overlords in the scene. He was there at the birth for the genre, and stayed with it through tough times right up to now, when it is very much back en vogue. Here ushers in a new era with the latest in his indefatigable A State of Trance series. The 2025 edition is a triple mix journey showcasing a full emotional and sonic range with 43 tracks across three themed segments, which move from the warm, melodic vibes of On The Beach-with cuts from Claptone x Chicane, AVIRA and OTTAGON-to the high-octane energy of In The Club, including bangers by Ferry Corsten, Andrew Bayer and Gabry Ponte. The final mix, Who's Afraid of 138?!, explodes with peak-hour intensity and is headlined by Armin's collaboration with Rob Swire. This is trance at its most euphoric.

Review: Disruptive Chicago house rule breaker and revered noise mangler Hieroglyphic Being aka Jamal Moss is back with more of his suitably entitled Weirdo Edits. The seventh volume dives headfirst into deranged disco territory and channels the frazzled, unpredictable energy of Ron Hardy's iconic Muzic Box tape edits across three heavily warped cuts built for dancefloor chaos. Moss leans into the lo-fi grit and psychedelic swirl he's known for on the hard-edge disco stomp of 'I'm Gonna Beat U This Way', then flips vintage grooves into a hypnotic, otherworldly club tool on 'Get Off Blast Off '. It's freaky, jacking, and unmistakably Jamal and then comes 'Clouds On The Rain.' off-kilter funk for heads who like their disco weird, raw, and full of soul.

Review: Recorded live in the Hypnose Room at La Nature 2023, Italian sound artist, live performer, DJ and independent researcher Katatonic Silentio's debut on Fleur Sauvage allows you to relive a riveting improvisational set across two 12"s. The sounds shift between cinematic ambient, abstract experimentation and textured noise in four parts, each of them rigid with tension that builds, breaks and reforms in unpredictable ways. Deep bass swells and granular distortions drift through fragile moments of calm to make for an unstable atmosphere that feels like you're lost in a vast factory after dark, and the hum of the day's industry still echoes through the building. Wonderful.

Hydro Pump (6:06)
Review: Philadelphia-based producer Sweater lands on MME with four vividly imagined club tools that fuse house, electro and sci-fi atmospherics with a tactile, floor-focused energy. ‘Mighty Morphin’ opens with loose-limbed drums, soft chord flashes and a buoyant groove that glows with warmth and movement. ‘Body Scan’ follows in darker hues—ghosted vocals and a rubbery bassline orbit around crisp percussion and flickering synth detail. The B-side leans heavier: ‘Escape The Future’ dives into dubby, low-slung territory, rolling out a shadowy pulse designed for dim, smoke-filled rooms. ‘Hydro Pump’ closes on an electro tip—playful but tight, its blipping leads and darting textures skimming over nimble, broken rhythms. Smart, weighty and imaginative, it’s a bold step forward for both artist and label, primed for the more adventurous end of the night.

Review: This is Eels' most immediately rewarding album Mark Oliver Everett, also known by his stage name E, was on miracle form: it's like some kind of divine intervention played a role in him being able to lay these stone cold bangers. Of the hits,'Souljacker (part 1)' is the most striking with its menacing, memorable riff that adds edge to any scene. Film buffs among us will know it from Wim Wenders' 'Twelve Miles To Trona' short film (2002) where it's a beautiful fit. Another highlight is the haunting 'Bus Stop Boxer', which is intense and emotionally charged in its depiction of the violence of loneliness. For 'Dog Faced Boy', it's been said that PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish wrote most of the music in Bristol and then E added lyrics and other embellishments when they were in LA together - few co-writes come out this well.

Review: James Horner's Oscar-winning scores for the likes of Titanic, Avatar and Braveheart put in in a class of his own as a composer for film, but even among those greats, his Legends of The Fall soundtrack stands proud. It is one of his most evocative and emotionally powerful works and blends sweeping symphonic themes with rich folk and Americana textures Horner brings that same mournful depth here that defined the aforementioned OSTs and crafts music that feels timeless and deeply human. Critics praised its ability to evoke profound feelings while weaving orchestral elegance and cultural roots into a hauntingly beautiful soundscape. This soundtrack is a journey, both cinematic and soul-stirring.

Now the music has been compiled into Analogical Force, a 12-track collection with half of the cuts reimagined for 2025 and pressed to wax. Together as one, the tracks feel like transmissions from a parallel sonic universe compacted into punchy melodic bursts. Razor-sharp percussion and textured distortion drive the proceedings: acid-wrapped 'Blade,' kinetic beats on 'Drift.Wood' and ambient depth in 'Blurr' all standout and more highlights include the haunting 'Anomikk (2025 Rework)' and glitch-funk of 'Cntroller (2025 Rework)' which spiral into futuristic dimensions.

The story of those artists and the labels they released on in the ensuing years is what is told so well here across four sides of vital wax.

The compilation also reinterprets Nigerian Igbo Highlife and Ekobe music thanks to producers Captain Planet, Uproot Andy and Caribombo. He is turning out plenty of it, all of it quality, and all of it steeped in his signature blend of deep house, hip hop and the Cuban rhythms of his personal family heritage. The latest edition is another smoking hot three-tracker that opens up with 'She Spoke To Me', a laid-back blend of live drums and dusty snares with neat little sax motifs and a soothing vocal coo. 'Spoof' is the third and final gem here, this time with some erotic vocal pleasures and sensuous pads.

Review: Cyclic and Random set a high early standard for the eying Nottingham label, but last time out it was the trio of RDH, N6 and XDLS who stepped up for one track each. They are back once again with more tasteful techno treats. 'Signal Flow' from RDH is a Maurizio-style deep, smoky, grainy dub techno excursion into the unknown, then N6 pairs things even further back on 'Becozich', which moves to and fro like a warm current in the deep ocean and carrie with it various bits of sonic plankton. There is no concession to urgency on XDLS's 'Valuu' either. It's another fathom-deep, super roomy dub slow burner that is all about letting your mind do the work.

Review: Solitary Dancer reunites with adidas and Yohji Yamamoto's forward-thinking Y-3 imprint for this Fall/Winter 2025 collection. It continues to boldly explore the dualities of light vs. dark, analogue vs. digital and real vs. surreal. This 12" formed the evocative runway score that debuted at the Pavillon Cambon in Paris this past January and merges cutting-edge sound design with the tension found between harmony and its opposites. It's alive with flickering neon lights, ghostly pads and wordless vocals that drift in and out to leave you questioning whether they exist at all.

Review: New label klaxon! Jus De Rose mergers form the ever-fertile Romanian scene with a first EP from George Gavanescu aka Floog, a minimalist who has put out some 24-odd EPs in less than a decade. His very firm grasp of dacenfloro dynamics is laid bare here with 'Not A SOS' kicking off with a soot-black post-punk energy, rugged bassline and slapping drum funk. 'Talo Bisco' twists cold wave and synth energy from 80s Eastern Europe into a slapping tech house workout and 'Intamplarea Din' is a more stripped-back thumper with a warped bassline and hurried drums that will lead to plenty of weirded-out moments. 'OMB 3' is another proto-techno experiment with cold analogue drums, 80s synths and dehumanised vocals.

Review: Formed in 1992 in Cheltenham by vocalist Mark Diston and DJ Curtis Lewis, Bass Cadets were always ahead of their time. Their sound was a collage of electronic, breakbeat and experimental sounds with a fierce DIY attitude, and this long-lost 4-track EP captures that raw, genre-defying spirit in full force. Now, finally pressed to vinyl for the first time via Relic, it takes in the sleek urgency of 'Feeline', ambient pads of 'Dealay' and kinetic trance techno tribalism of 'Nuclear Starfish'. With tracks that still sound fresh nearly three decades later, this is a perfect time capsule of early 90s innovation

Review: Crafted over five years and during several of life's larger milestones and the woes of the pandemic, Infinity Mirrors is a deeply reflective jazz album exploring self-discovery through love, anxiety, hope and acceptance. It is the world of South London-born and raised multi-faceted producer, composer and DJ Hector Plimmer, who broke out a decade ago and here blends past and present experiences into a richly intimate world. The record is packed with collaborations with artists like Laura Misch, Andrew Ashong and Tawiah who help weave soulful melodies, ambient textures and jazz sensibilities. It's a profound and essential new take on jazz with a distinctive London edge.

Decades later, a chance reconnection before lockdown reignited their friendship and sparked a new musical adventure. Studio sessions turned shared memories into the sonic fusion that is Closed Circuit, a raw blend of electro grit, B-boy swagger, Warp-inspired house and dusty vocoders. Roman Flugel adds his own sharp remix, while the sleeve features nostalgic photos from Lozano's early 2000s London rave days. Proper tackle, this.

The EP picks a seriously punch with tracks like Leslie Lello's 'R U Doing' (De Gama Re-Groove), a bass-driven house anthem with soaring synths, Frank Virgilio's 'Juice,' a fusion of acid basslines, organ stabs and tribal vocals, and Javi Frias's 'The Big Dance,' which is an electrifying track with bongos, laser beams and a disco bassline that delivers exactly what its title promises.

Review: The 'SAR' EP celebrates the early brilliance of the American Womack family, originally performing as the Womack Brothers before evolving into The Valentinos. This well curated collection showcases four lesser known gems that trace a certain aspect of soul's evolution from the gospel depth of 'Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray' to the raw r&b of 'Don't Go Away' and 'Rock In The Cradle Of Love,' while the stunning group soul of 'Put Me Down Easy' is another doozy. Most tracks make their vinyl debut here, with 'Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray' previously only appearing on a rare SAR pressing. It forms a vital tribute to soul's origins.

This inter-genre trip explores ambient, deep techno, downtempo and leftfield electronica and though accomplished, balances playfulness with mystery. As a multi-instrumentalist, Wang layers her own voice plus sax, flute, violin and percussion to bring organic warmth to surreal sonic spaces. From propulsive techno cuts like 'Soul Reflections' to ethereal explorations like 'Crystal Valley,' each sound reflects the shifting moods of the subconscious. Emotional, experimental and deeply personal, this is a fine capturing of the strange beauty of the dream world.

Review: Country and folk singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter is making up for lost time. Having left it five years between albums, the multi-Grammy winner is now onto her second album of 2025, having released a collaborative album, Looking for the Thread, back in January. Chapin's glistening oeuvre, which stretches back to her Steve Buckingham-produced debut in 1987, is bolstered significantly with this new offering, too. 'Bitter Ender', the first single, manages to sound intimate and widescreen at the same time: there's plenty of polish to make it a daytime radio hit, whilst never losing sight of the fact the Americana genre is principally about storytelling and she holds your attention throughout. Meanwhile, 'Home Is A Song' is more downtempo and strives off the beautiful interlocking of simple piano chords and intricate arpeggio guitar. The chorus harmonies are delightful and heartfelt. A solid entry by an all-time great of the genre.

Review: Following 2020's acclaimed Women In Music Pt. III, which earned GRAMMY and BRIT nods, the LA-based American rock trio and sisters HAIM return with their bold fourth studio album on Polydor. Produced by Danielle Haim and Rostam Batmanglij, 15-tracker I Quit leans confidently into their noted classic rock influences while introducing fresh textures, including warped samples and stripped-back ballads. It's a record made for the stage as it is raw, dynamic and deeply rooted in their chemistry as live performers. The record reaffirms HAIM's place as modern rock trailblazers and is familiar yet evolving, so it will appeal to old fans and new ears with its fine balance of swagger and soul.

Review: Superfett's foray into the vinyl world continues with a fifth outing into a range of deep and house excursions. Marco Lys's 'River feat Rion S' kicks off with scintillating synths hanging in the air next to indie vocals for a fresh combination. Murphy's Law's 'Disco Rocker' is a loopy, filtered French touch jam with steamy sax, while Dilby's 'Swingstate' is a chunky and summer-ready anthem with another crowd-pleasing horn top line. Splonie's 'Your Desire' is pure soulful house exuberance with a big vocal and piano-powered house drums with a touch of 90s energy.

The sprawling double LP produced by Gustavo Santaolalla fused punk, norteNo, funk and traditional Mexican sounds into a daring, genre-defying opus. Tracks like 'El Baile y El Salon' and 'La Ingrata' became almost instant anthems, while deeper cuts elsewhere explored death, identity and national pride. Often compared to The White Album by The Beatles, Re delivered cohesion through diversity and elevated Mexican rock to new artistic heights. Thirty years on, it's a cult classic and cultural cornerstone and is essential listening that reshaped rock en espaNol and inspired generations who came after.

Drawing inspiration from late 90s and early 00s progressive trance, this outing is a heartfelt homage with forward-thinking momentum. Each track builds with hypnotic layers, sleek synths and adrenalised momentum that is always bubbling up but never boiling over, so it keeps you in joyful suspense across the long-form dancefloor trips. It's a logical and powerful follow-up to his 2023 'Cosmic Egg' EP on Love On The Rocks and is another heady affair.

Over the past year, Vithz has made worldwide moves and played from New York to Shanghai and Milan to Melbourne, apparently while crafting this strong new release featuring four stripped-back tracks that weave house, Balearic vibes, breaks and minimal grit into a refined yet raw sound. 'Night Tales' is a humid, sweaty throbber for the basement, 'Break Me' spins out on spacey breaks with curious synth motifs and 'Que Haces' brings a more playful and funky twist to switch up the rhythms when you need a break from solid four-four. 'Intense' is a heady one with a low-key but intimate feel and nice frayed edges.

Review: Nature Boy really knows how to jam out loose impromptu house cuts that are rough, raw but real. These cuts are taken from floppy discs of recordings made in the 90s when the sometime Massive Attack member dropped classics likes Ruff Disco Volume One and two volumes of Necessary Ruffness. 'Bassline Jumper' has that twangy, swaggering signature sound with bursts of horn for colour, 'Your Body' is a funky jam with busy, textural chords and hissing hi hats and 'Unaffected' tugs at the heart with its buried soul samples and chunky, choppy drums. It's beatdown brilliance that packs a killer punch.

Jager opens with a sleek, minimal groover in the form of 'Evolve', which is a functional DJ tool built on hypnotic rhythms and detailed textures that reward close listening. MZR takes care of the flip with a more emotive note on 'Closer,' which is a dreamy, introspective track that drifts through delicate atmospheres while maintaining a dancefloor dynamism. Together, these capture the essence of minimalist techno: precise, restrained and bait for the brain.

This Argentinian producer follows in the footsteps of Candido (who was behind Megabreakz 7) to deliver his own raw and unapologetic take on the hard new beat style. The A-side leans into minimalism with 'Anxiety' and 'Insomnia' both bringing stripped-back, tripped-out moods that are built from subtle textures, deep grooves and eerie synth work. While the duo of Cee-Lo Green and Danger Mouse rose to fame with the massive hit 'Crazy,' this album revealed a more nuanced, experimental side. Staying true to their cinematic r&b roots, The Odd Couple refines their sound with sharper songwriting and polished production. Highlights include the gospel-synth swirl of 'Going On' and the frantic funk energy of 'Run (I'm A Natural Disaster).' It's an underrated follow-up that showed Gnarls Barkley was more than just a one-hit wonder.

Anderson, previously of Vancouver duo Weed, recorded the two previous albums all himself but through more fortunate circumstances acquired four musicians who he's welcomed to be part of the process the whole way. Moreover, Wisconsin producer Amos Pitsch, who runs Crutch of Memory studio where they recorded, played a big role and this collective effort has yielded stellar results, marking this record out as one of the key albums of the new wave of American shoegaze, no matter how much the band probably bristle at the pigeonhole.

Famed primarily for their iconic track 'Oh Mama Tonight,' which was actually released only as a rare promo single, the duo's best work became a holy grail for collectors and true enthusiasts. After just three official releases, they seemingly disappeared until the early 2000s, when Finnish Italo fan Kimmo Salo found them in Italy. This reunion led to a new chapter for Dyva's founders, Roberto Calzolari and Massimo Traversoni, who revived their 80s demos and created fresh material. Spanning 1986 to 2024, this album has it all so is a welcome time capsule.
