Review: Soul Brother Records' Record Store Day 2020 release offers up re-mastered versions of two hard-to-find early 'disco mixes' of modern soul-era gems. On the A-side you'll find Tom Moulton's scarce, five-minute club version of soul man Bobby Moore's '(Call Me Your) Anything Man', a delightfully orchestrated and super-sweet dancefloor workout built around a Latin-tinged groove reminiscent of Grace Jones' 'La Vie En Rose', which of course Moulton later famously remixed. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour West End Records' boss Mel Cheren's wonderfully over-the-top dancefloor extension of obscure vocal group Sweet Music's soaring cover of K.C & The Sunshine Band favourite 'I Get Lifted'. It's very different to their much-loved take, but every bit as essential.

Review: Marcellus Pittman's #2 EP on FXHE is one of the legendary labels very many early classics. It's originally from 2006 but if this one were to drop now you wouldn't suspect it was almost 20 years old. As always with Pittman, everything is muted and low-key as well as lo-fi. The pad drums on 'Obsession (Datsallivdatsalliv~'^**!!)' are suggestive rather than in your face, and the depths of his bass are bottomless as natty, barely-there synth patterns unfold up top. 'Skylark (Late Morning mix Foool!!)' is similar with swirling dub pads and a skeletal rhythm but this time it's a little more defined with rusty hi-hats. Two absolutely stone-cold classics.

Review: With a first in their new series, Bar:Low couldn't have set the bar higher. Describing their own work as "blended incantations for dancefloor situations", there's otherwise little sayable about the background of these sure-to-be underground Balearic hits, save for their innate, trailblazing edits elan. Focused squarely on Balearic disco, the A-side sports a reedit of French disco drummer and composer Cerrone's 1997 resurrector 'Supernature', while the B goes chuggy with a Nine Inch Nails reinterpretive original, and the B-side rounds out on a slow, star-seeing daze, 'Balearic Bruce'.

Review: While this may feel like a reassuring relic of a bygone era of house - there's a real mid-to-late-'90s San Francisco deep house-meets-Fila Brazillia vibe going on here - '$10 Rework' is actually brand, spanking new. It's a remake of' $10 Heel', which first appeared on Ultramarine's 2019 set 'Signals Into Space'. This version is warmer, looser and far more groovy, with Anna Domino's stylish vocal, echoing guitars, snaking sax and Dubtribe-esque organ sounds riding a deep, dubby bassline and swinging drum machine beats. Arguably even better are the two flip-side dubs (the first vocal, the second instrumental), both of which see the veteran British duo reach for delay-doused hand percussion, echoing instrumentation and the killer instrumentation. They're the kind of spaced-out dancefloor dubs that make most sense as the sun's coming up at an open-air party.

Review: FUSE London may be 16 years old, but this 12" inch is - somewhat remarkably - the label's first multi-artist EP. To kick-start their new compilation style series, the much-loved imprint has gathered up a quartet of cuts from an eye-catching array of artists. Heist regular Nachtbraker steps up first with 'Banda', an intergalactic-sounding hybrid of tech-house, deep house and nu-disco sounds, before Rob Amboule steals the show with the bleeping electro-meets-twisted electronic funk brilliance of 'Capnhat'. Rising star Reflex Blue joins the dots between sub-heavy UK tech-house and turn-of-the-90s bleep & bass on the superb 'Life's a Bleep', while Mario Liberti reaches for mutilated rap samples and heady organ stabs on the 'Plastic Dreams'-inspired 'We Are The N&B'.

Review: The fledgling Pamela label hits release number three with Anthony Teasdale the man charged with taking us on a sonic trip. He kicks off with a gorgeous cut that pairs breezy grooves with flamboyant keys that sound like they come from a theatrical moment in a play. It is a super symphony that sweeps you off your feet while 'A Pavement In Palma' is a humid and sundown gem, 'Deep In The Forest Something Stared' is layered ups with retro-future synths from a band like ELO and 'It's 5am Somewhere' then has more slick kick to it, but no less a majestic sense of melody which seems to be Teaseale's calling card.

Review: DATA17 is back with more of that irresistible hand-stamped white label minimal and tech house goodness. 'Pour Toi' kick off this particular party with high speed tech funk loops and crashing hits that demand you dance while wonky synth lines unfold up top. The clipped and kinetic funk continues on 'C La Vie' which has distant playground found sounds and balmy pads and 'Sous Influence' that slips down into superbly icy and economical minimal grooves, with nagging leads hooking you in as the militant drums march below. It's an eerie and futuristic sounds completed with some spoken words from Blade Runner.

Deep House
Review: Third time around for mysterious rework crew Florence's third hush-hush 12", a popular two-tracker that first landed in stores back in 2015. On A-side cut 'Nicholas', the unknown editors get to work on a typically deep, slipped and jazz-flecked blend of tech-house, deep house and jazz from Nicholas Jaar - then something of a scene star with a reputation for delivering detailed, atmospheric and club-ready productions. This particular track features a (likely sampled) female vocal, as well as smoky sax, low-slung bass and effects-laden tech-house beats. Over on the reverse is 'Johnny', a deep, jangling, tactile and woozy revision of what sounds like a cover version of a Johnny Cash classic.

Review: The enigmatic Florence series continues with a varied collection of dance-focused cuts. The looped-up 'Aphect' features haunting vocals transcending pulsing chords, snappy drums, and deep bass, while the familiar disco flex of 'Bphect' features a beefed-up edit of Melba Moore's classic 'Pick Me Up, I'll Dance'. Crisp rhythms power more wigged-out vocals on the stripped-but-sturdy 'Cphect', before the showstopper 'Dphect' features a boldly tongue-in-cheek (or playful, depending on how you look at it) house version of The Shadows' 'My Blue Heaven,' with Cliff's honeyed vocal spliced over bumping drums. Bags of fun.

Review: Whoever is behind these STEDIT drops is striking upon pure gold, bringing a legitimately underground techno crunch to the pop edit practice. Having previously tackled the likes of Brandy & Monica and Ultra Nate, now two of the biggest pop divas of all time are getting some low down and dirty reworkings which tread the fine balance between earworm familiarity and the heads down moodiness of a locked-in dancefloor. 'Slow' becomes a slippery acid abstraction peppered with all kinds of sonic freakery, while 'Justify My Love' becomes a brooding, steadfast workout tipped towards the minimal crowd.

Review: Ste Roberts, under his STEDIT alias, has been building a reputation for taking beloved classics and flipping them on their head. This latest release is no exception. Two synthpop anthems, once the defining sound of an era, have been reimagined, reworked, and unleashed across dancefloors all summer. It's not about the big-room bombast or predictable edits that cater to easy thrills. No, Roberts is more nuanced than thaticrafting something that feels at once familiar and alien. The first rework, Depeche Mode's 'It's No Good,' is a masterclass in restraint. The track's dark undertones remain, but Roberts pulls it into a gritty, subterranean space. It's a slow burn, keeping the tension tight while the vocals float above a relentless, pulsing beat. Then comes the flipiHuman League's 'Don't You Want Me.' What was once pure pop joy is now something altogether darker, more elusive. Roberts has stripped it back, laying bare the iconic vocals against a stripped-down, funky groove that simmers beneath the surface.

Review: Perel launches her own new label Hits Hits Hits! with a potent new single that is backed by a great remix from Canadian talent Jex Oplois. The lead tune on this 12", which also comes with a sticker, is '1 Life', a full throttle and thumping cut that is packed densely with 90s tribal techno synth sounds, old school house piano chords and a nice r&b vocal all of which serve to sweep you up and journey you to the stars. After the instrumental comes the remix from Jex Opolis that dials things back and makes it even more zoned out and subtly euphoric.

Review: Mystery-heavy UK leftfield soul outfit Sault's 12th album feels like a deeply personal offering wrapped in some of the most radiant production of their career. With Inflo behind the boards, the album moves fluidly between soulful reflection and uplifting groove. Opener 'The Healing' speaks to emotional growth, inner peace and shared vulnerability. The message is clear: healing is a journey best taken together. Tracks like 'Power' and 'Know That You Will Survive' are driven by rich, pulsing basslines and lush instrumentation. They groove with purpose, rooted in funk and soul while sounding unmistakably present-day. Cleo's voice carries a calm authority, especially on 'Know That You Will Survive'. a song that delivers hard truths with grace and warmth. 'Look Up' springs to life with Pino Palladino's bass anchoring the song's ghostly harmonies. Tracks such as 'Higher Than the Rain' and 'Real Love' layer gently but build with quiet force. The subtlety makes them all the more gripping. But 'Sorry It's Too Late' lingers the longest. A simple piano line and Cleo's bare, aching voice create a stillness that's hard to shake. Through sorrow, hope and light, 10 is a graceful reminder that there's strength in softness.

Review: 10 Seconds is a series of beat-driven vinyl releases from Canadian artist A Track. He is best known for being a part of the globe-trotting EDM circuit and has been for decades. He also runs his own Fools Gold label and puts out from time to time a series of beat experiments smashed out on his SP1200 drum machine. This series kicks off with a nice red 10" and four cuts of floor-wrecking electro that are raw and brain-frying. They're not big, they're not hard, they're not smart, but they are sure to be damn effective.

Review: The "Rhythms Of The Pacific" series hears Vancouver label Pacific Rhythms reimagine dance music to aid in vast ocean traversals. Returning with another 12" sampler of material - the tracks are slated for inclusion in a celebratory ten year anniversary comp later this year - we hear Lnrdcroy, Waterpark, Kennedy and Active Surplus bring upper-echelonic, chameleonic beats of the much-less-peggable variety. 'Galaxio Salaxio' moves between dark synth and watery dub, scarcely preparing us for the immersive chordal swims that ensue on 'Coastal Plus'. Finally, 'Blue Beam' incurs an underwater search for coves and water pockets, as jets of pressure escape through riser synths and pufferfish drums.

Review: Many happy returns to Detroit's Rocksteady Disco, an undeniably consistent label that has reached the ripe old age of ten years old. To celebrate, they're releasing a series of anniversary EPs containing fresh jams from the label's roster of artists. Mainstays Sol Power All Stars get things going with off-kilter Afro-house scorcher 'Solsibisa' - all heavy horns, hot-stepping drum machine beats, squelchy synth-bass and heady vocal snippets - before Eddie Logix combines lightly pitched-down First Choice vocal samples with Balearic guitar bursts and plenty of deep house nous on '2nd Choice (It's Still Not Over)'. Over on the reverse, Blair French gets summery on the Latin-tinged deep house joy of 'Whispers of You', while Topher Horn reaches for dense drums (acoustic and electronic), sparse melodic motifs and heavy bass on 'Gratiot Dub'.
