Slow Don't Kill Me Slow
Review: Scottish indie stalwarts Franz Ferdinand thrust onto the scene back in 2004 seeking to antidote the then bad-boy aesthetic of groups like The Libertines with smart, suave 'music to dance to'. Fourteen years on and following a slight lineup change, their objective doesn't appear to have changed with their fifth album 'Always Ascending'. Produced by Philippe Zdar of famed Parisian duo Cassius - it's a slick, tight record that's doused in their trademark off-kilter panache. Over forty energetic minutes, there's a lot to dig into; the ballad 'The Academy Award' and art-pop oddball 'Huck & Jim' let Alex Kapranos' dry wit come to the fore, the infectious funk-channeling chorus on 'Finally' sounds like a dip into 60's pop, while 'Feel The Love Go' is vintage Franz Ferdinand. 'Always Ascending' sees Franz Ferdinand full of charm, reinvigorated, and perfectly comfortable in no longer needing to prove anything.

Asleep
Review: A perfect final offering from Dulc-i-Tone's fine family of beautifully handmade and fucked-up musical treasures, New Faultlines are San Francisco's best garage-pop sleepers. Brilliantly home-recorded by brothers Luke and Zach Robbins, the band makes lazy pop melodies with languidly lovely harmonies like only brothers can make. Despite their garage-punk pedigree (Zach booked the former hub of SF sloppy garage-punk, Pissed Off Pete's, and played alongside Traditional Fools members in the surf-punk band Sleepy Beach), New Faultlines take a much gentler angle, with a sound that more closely recalls LA's early-'80s Paisley Underground and the reverbed-out pop of mid-'80s England.

The layered guitars and rolling bass of A-side "Ancient Seas" channel both "Chronic Town"-era REM's Rickerbacker jangle and Felt's best atmospheric guitar work. The fifteenth record in fifteen years from Dulc-i-Tone, New Faultlines' debut single represents the final installment from the label that brought you now-collectable records from The Aislers Set, The Mantles, Ganglians, Eat Skull, Six Organs, and The Scrotum Poles.

Hand-stamped records, limited to 300.

Review: Not many people would have put a bet on The Libertines making a third album, yet here it is, as bold as brass and portraying a band in the kind of rude health that would have been considered unthinkable a decade or so ago. Producer Jake Gosling, most famous as an A-list pop producer, may have polished the ditties of the Wilfred Owen-referencing 'Anthems For Doomed Youth' to a sheen, yet the band's ragtag charm and romantic bluster is still present and correct, and indeed the irony may be that beyond all the hyperbole and drug-fuelled acrimony of their heyday, the band appear to be firing on all cylinders now as never before.

Review: As always quite the polymath, yet recently a husband and a father, the prolific Andrew Bird here appears comfortable with his new-found domesticity. Not content with merely being the indie cognoscenti's whistler of choice, or using his multi-instrumental skills to augment these fleet-footed and charming ditties, 'Are You Serious' finds Bird sounding rejuvenated and vibrant - his sharp wordplay is as abundant as ever, as are the swathes of strings that habitually haunt his work, yet moreover there's a romantic lilt to this record than is never stronger than on 'Left Handed Kisses', a bittersweet duet with Fiona Apple that comes across like no less than a 21st century answer to Nancy & Lee.

Review: The Wombats release their new single "Backfire At The Disco" on the Kids label. A new recording of the live favourite, the track was produced by Jimmy Robertson (Klaxons) and mixed by Steve Harris (Kaiser Chiefs). With an effervescence that belies its subject matter of a disastrous date, the track is a dangerously catchy hi-octane blast of scuzzy indie pop, which exemplifies why The Wombats have stealthily become the biggest unsigned band in the UK.

Review: Far from his origins are a progenitor of chillwave and a man whose sound was synonymous with a certain kind of hazed-out and blissful abstraction, Chaz Bear has changed up his act considerably in the intervening in the years, embarding a funkier and fuller sound whilst also coming to the fore as a lead vocalist and personality. 'Boo Boo' is every bit as obsessed with the sounds and styles of the '80s as ever, yet the cherry-picking here goes above and beyond anything he's attempted before, embracing the limber lustiness of Prince once moment and the ashen-faced dirges of early Cure the next - yet crucially amidst this indie-RnB hybrid there's a seductive yearning that remains Bear's calling card and separates these moods and cadences from any other hipsterati troubadour on the block.

Stain Goddess
Review: Formed just one year ago, this London three piece have gained a loyal following through their raucous live shows and talent for writing catchy hooks. Already there have been much loved appearances at Manchester's In The City, London's Death Disco, and nights at Drowned In Sound and Playlouder amongst others. This group are a stripped down rock 'n' roll act reminding us of Dinosaur Jr and Royal Trux in particular, but have also had comparisons to such a variety as David Bowie, Butthole Surfers and even The Toxic Twin days of Aerosmith. Now's the time for their cracking debut single, released as a limited seven inch release on Dell'Orso Records; it's an uplifting tale of bad health, laziness and paranoia ("Chewing Gum") whilst on the flip side ("Stain Goddess") is their three minute ode to a John Waters film plot. Both will stick in your minds as only the finest infectious pop does.

Review: Should you find yourself in continental Europe, or the little islands surrounding it, you may be feeling a sense of the autumnal blues upon the release of this European Heartbreak LP. It's far from a morose and downcast listen though, with the choral of Annelotte de Graaf's voice a shining light to lead you through the trepidation of winter. On top of her two law degrees and work for the international war crimes tribunal, this latest opus provides her with a second album following Fading Lines of 2016, and expect spells of tatty pop intertwined with boops and breathy vocals that meet with subtle brass instrumentation, pianos and folky practices, all sung with a slight smug and smirk of discontent.

Review: Emil Amos has largely made his name with the likes of Grails and Om, but 'Fall Of Man' marks his latest step out as a solo artist, and his first release for Thrill Jockey. It's a far cry from his bands of yore, rather a nocturnally hued collection of indie-folk ditties, with experimental and dubbed-out tangents vying for attention with elegant songcraft and tasteful arrangements with cinematic and dusky results. Surreal and bleak yet expansive and imaginative, 'Fall Of Man' is almost enough to make on wish that Amos would give up the day job(s).

Review: Moshi Moshi have for a long time now held their place as a trusted source in harbouring fresh, exploratory indie and pop, with the likes of Hercules & Love Affair, the enigmatic Tom Vek, Au Revoir Simone and Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor common names seen across its discography. Another trusted group for the label is Teleman who deliver their third full length, a record that's boasted as freer and more collaborative than anything they've done before. Wayfarer-wearing synth pop is a nice way to thematicise the LP Family Of Aliens though, with hints of UK-indie - in true Moshi Moshi style - intertwining with Frenchy synth pop. The mellow cruise and space vocoders of "Submarine Life" is a sweet dream to listen to alongside the meaner night drive of "Cactus", a number invoking images of a New Mexico desert with Roswell somewhere over in the distance.

Review: Jeepster's first signing in several years, SixNationState are a phenomenal live band who have been winning fans around London and the South of England with constant touring over the last twelve months. They have played with The Holloways and The Maccabees, toured Germany and Austria with The Rumble Strips and performed to a packed Trailer Park Stage audience at this summer's Truck Festival. Following on from their limited split 7" release, 'Keep Dancing' on Worst Case Scenario Records in March this year the band's first single for Jeepster will be live favourite 'Fire!'. A frantic introduction to the energy and excitement of the band the single will be available on two track 7" and three track CD. All three tracks rocket in at just over seven minutes in total! The artwork for the single is intended to provide an introduction to the band and their distinctive image while retaining a level of anonymity. The individual personalities within SixNationState will be introduced as the campaign develops toward the album. The 7" format will be coloured vinyl in a full colour sleeve, limited to 500 copies.

Good Flight
Review: Both tracks were produced by Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Super Furry Animals) and Charlie Waddington from the band. Limited to 500 physical copies, both tracks will also be available to download from the release date. Taking their cue from seminal artists such as Love and Neil Young, and contemporaries like Grandaddy and Shack, Bluesky Research are purveyors of timeless, magisterial folk-rock music. The excellence of Bluesky Research has caught the attention of their peers - they've toured with Ian Brown, Echo & The Bunnymen, and Pure Reason Revolution. Ian Brown in particular is a huge fan of the band and has collaborated with Waddington, who wrote the track 'Forever And A Day' for Brown's last studio album 'Solarized' and remixed Brown on the 'Remixes Of The Spheres' remix record. Bluesky Research have created their own scene in their hometown, Portsmouth, where they play, DJ and promote two other bands at their monthly Research night at The Lounge in Southsea, which sells out to 300 punters every month. This summer they played to their biggest ever audiences at the Latitude and Ben & Jerry's festivals, receiving critical plaudits for both.

Review: Girl Ray's sophomore LP isn't simply pop songs about love. It's certainly their poppiest offering to date, switching guitar-first arrangements for synthy beats. "Girl" as a whole deals with themes around matters of the heart, but the concept is more concerned with the importance of other elements in your life when love is either navigating rocky seas, or beached on an uninhabitable island, walking away is the only route for both parties. Don't expect the record to carry the weight of it all though. Ash Workman's production helps the troupe leave the heaviness behind and achieve near-perfect pop aesthetics. The band have also cited Ariana Grande's "thank u, next" as a major influence in their change of tact, further indicating what the contents feel like. From breezy opener "Girl" to tearful closing track, "Like The Stars", it's a meditation on friends, support networks and seeing things as they really are.

The rest of the record features atmospheric moments and sombre singing over slow-burning grooves, some funkier sounds like 'Hitori Kaze' and plenty of innovative sounds in between.

Review: Although Pillowtalk largely made their name through a series of woozy, enveloping tech-house tracks, they've always been at their best when exploring their leftfield pop influences. It's pleasing to find, then, that Je Ne Said Quoi, their belated debut album, smartly moves further in this direction. Of course, there's a strong dancefloor undercurrent - see the ghetto-influenced deepness of "4 Walls" and bassy, P-funk-goes-deep house pulse of "We All Have Rhythm" - but many of the album's standout moments doff a cap to lo-fi indie-pop ("Devil Run" and "Inside in the Dark", both of which are built around live drums, bass and guitars) and Junior Boys-ish deep synth-pop (the brilliant "Homesick").

Review: Yeah yeah, Cleveland rocks, and of late it's Ohio's Cloud Nothings that, alongside Bone Thugs & Harmony and Nine Inch Nails, are keeping the city on the map as somewhere that still has something in the water. This latest album sees the group elevated to a release on Wichita - think Bloc Party, The Crips and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah among others - and it's the 11-minute "Dissolution", the freeform centerpiece of this album that really impresses. It's a short cry from the experimental rock of At The Drive In/Mars Volta while more emotional numbers like "The Echo Of The World" and "Another Way Of Life" bring to mind bands like Alexisonfire, Thrice and Sparta. If you like your punk with touch of Pennywise and Rancid too, Cloud Nothings set the tone.

Leave Me Alone! (3:00)
Be With Me (4:10)
Review: Boy Pablo continues his mission to make us all nostalgic for our younger years with a track taken from this year's bubblegum album, Wachito Rico. 'Leave Me Alone' is enough to tell newcomers what they can expect from the full length release. Uptempo, melodic and polished to a fault, it's a timeless, chart-friendly, indie pop sound that has won over a huge following with its unabashed positivity, albeit the sentiments are apparently tied to the feeling disappointment when his parents suddenly making him leave a birthday party early.

Flip it and you find the laidback, smooth, R&B vibes of 'Be With Me', a song that didn't make it onto the LP itself but certainly would not have sounded out of place if it had. Cascading guitar harmonies and a stepping, shuffling beat, it owes plenty to the lo-fi electronic sexiness that has been pervading downtempo beats for years, but is far from a cheap knock-off.

Review: Combining indie rock, psychedelic rock and Eastern influences, Flamingods certainly know how to mix things up. Levitation, their 5th album and the first since 2016's Majesty opens with a disco feel via "Paradise Place", before the laid-back grooves of "Koray" provide a leeway for more eclectic and dance-centric tracks to take hold later on in the album. The second half of the record takes us into more spacey territory best heard on "Moonshine On Water", before the band's trippy, psychedelic influences come strongly to the fore on "Mantra East" and Eastern melodies shine through on "Nizwa". An eclectic, psyched-out adventure of a record, Levitation is an album that will tempt you into Flamingods' esoteric world.

Tell Me That You Weren't Alone
Review: Delivering their second album of 2018 is Leicestershire's own The Wave Pictures whose legacy dates back to 1998, a solid 20 licks. The album, the band say, is dedicated to friendship, happiness and drunken party times and it's no surprise to read Look Inside Your Heart was recorded liquored up somewhere in Stoke Newington, North London. With harmonicas, the odd guitar, chatter of backup vocals and racketty drums abound, the album's that perfect reminder that two's a party, three's a crowd, but more is always merrier.

Review: There are few musicians who are both as iconic and as divisive as Morrissey, who has devoted his career to building a persona of an outspoken iconoclast and whipping up storms of controversy. In 'Low In High School, his eleventh solo studio album since The Smiths disbanded, Morrissey sets his acerbic sights on stifling media and news outlets, the Israel/Palestine conflict and the monarchy, amongst other subjects. Sonically, it's a dense and heavily produced collage of rock, electronic, ballads and even a few very-Smiths sounding tracks. Love it or hate it, 'Low In High School' is pure Morrissey, and the sage of Salford's status as king of the provocateurs endures.

Review: Curve ball release of the week goes to Planet Mu with Mercury, the debut LP from the Miracle pairing of Steve Moore and Guapo's Daniel O'Sullivan. Best known for his luscious and at times transcendental output on LIES, Future Times and Death Waltz, Steve Moore is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished (and prolific) composers to surface out of the US synth underground. Apparently first crossing paths with O'Sullivan back in 2006 when the pair were touring in their respective bands Zombi and Guapo, Mercury is the result of some four years of musical collaboration. Planet Mu describe the nine track set as a collection of "anthemic power ballads" and as soon as O'Sullivan's vocals kick in you'll find it hard to disagree though Moore's musicianship is just as integral a part and shines through on the arpeggio heavy "Falling Into The Night" which also perhaps best captures Miracle's dual inspiration of 80s cinema classic The Lost Boys and Giallo horror.

Review: There have been so many peculiar releases from Wayne Coyne and his merry men in the last few years that it comes as something of a relief to not only be confronted with their new album proper but to discover that it follows in the fearlessly experimental style that they embarked on with their last two trips to neverland. This ris testimony to a band still firmly intent on transcending the everyday with heartfelt emotion to spare. 'Oczy Mlody' may be sonically adventurous and otherworldly, yet like all of this band's finest works, its sense of wonder is more commonly down to melody and songcraft than sonic trickery or head-spinning psychedelia.
