VARIOUS
Cat: SOUNDS 003. Rel: 24 Feb 23

Fred Fresh - "5 Mouths" (5:17)
Bob Fitzgerald - "Mihac" (8:24)
Kem M - "The Burger King" (5:10)
Mind Phase One - "Work" (4:51)
Chris Sattinger - "Tonque Crystal Moss" (4:27)
Astrocat & Kenny S - "Conception" (7:06)
ESP - "Teacher" (6:09)
Deadly Buddha - "The Gods Must Be Crazy" (6:00)
Review: Reissued from an obscure 1995 release on the Sounds. Records imprint - a sublabel of the Minnesotan label Communique Records, founded and run by Woody McBride - Neighbours has been touted as among one of the strangest releases to have come out from under the McBride umbrella, putting together a slew of tracks that for various reasons may not have easily made it onto each featuring artist's solo releases. Oddballs from Fred Fresh, Kem M, Mind Phase One, and the like make for an overall broken sound; our favourite is the rabidly strange pulsator, 'Tonque Crystal Moss', by Chris Sattinger.

Review: Los Angeles outfit DIN return with a fourth album that is their fullest yet. It is a real contrast between the light and airy vocals of Josie Vand and the ever present electronics of Greg Vand. Both fall in and out of harmony, take turns to lead and seduce as they do so. Every sound is clear and concise, with syncopated percussion and playful synths. The record is not only a musical triumph but one that revels in the experience of living in the here and now. As far as contemporary cold wave and synth go, this is right up there.

Review: Classic psychedelic rock singer Han Young-ae was a big deal back in the 80s and 90s, then disappeared before returning with a new album in 2014. This album, Vol 2, on C Sharp comes on limited transparent yellow wax with an insert and nine tracks that fuse her theatrical rock singing style with old school 90s rock licks and cold electronic drums on the opener then switch it up entirely for the sentiment soul ballad on track two. There are more soft rock pieces, 80s disco tinged rock, and many other weird and wonderful in between sounds from this cult artist. It shows she has come a long way since starting out with a folk band in the 70s.

Rhythms Of Class
Review: Festival favourites and working-class heroes Sleaford Mods hail from the East Midlands and have become the voice of the oppressed and the pissed off. Their gritty, lo-fi, raw and stripped-back music is powered by punky electronic beats and overlaid with bars spat out with real anger and ire. They have churned out plenty of it by now, subtle tweaking the template each time but never losing the visceral appeal. This new album UK Grim - a play on UK Grime? - is more dancefloor focussed than before it with the angst and pitfalls of modern life all addressed. It's another winner, no doubt.

Enter the world of studio-based recording with the M-Track 2X2 Vocal Studio Pro - the ultimate all-in-one solution for computer recording projects. Combining the critically acclaimed M-Track 2X2 interface, HDH40 headphones, a Nova Black condenser microphone, XLR cable and the premium C-Series Software Suite, laying down vocal tracks, recording electric and acoustic instruments and adding voice-overs to multimedia projects has never been easier. With the M-Track 2X2 Vocal Studio Pro, the combination of high-performance hardware and easy-to-use software results in pro-grade audio capture for every recording scenario.

More Than Just An Interface:
This is the creative centre of your recording setup: simple-to-use, style-infused M-Track 2X2 C-Series audio interface is the perfect tool to record and produce natural-sounding 24-bit/192kHz studio-quality recordings. Combining one XLR+ 1/4" balanced combo input and an all-new dedicated 1/4" instrument input, the M-Track C-Series 2X2 enables you to record two channels simultaneously. The versatility of a combo input accommodates any source audio with a microphone or line-level output while a tailor-made gain and impedance stage on the conveniently located instrument input guarantees a clean, accurate guitar or bass DI signal.

Fusing an elegant pro-grade metal chassis, USB & USC-C connection cables, all-new transparent low-noise Crystal pre-amps and pristine A/D converters that deliver the highest audio performance in their class, the M-Track 2X2 provides all the tools you need to capture that initial idea and transform it into a finished masterpiece with ease. Take your music to the next level and start recording now!

Professional Recording - Done:
Studio-grade recording demands the right tools for the job. M-Audio's Nova Black large-diaphragm condenser microphone is perfect for podcasting applications or capturing high-quality audio from vocalists, instruments, percussion and more

At the heart of the Nova Black microphone is an 18mm pure aluminium condenser capsule with a directional cardioid polar pattern. This delivers wide range frequency response (20 - 20kHz), high sensitivity (-38dB, 0dB = 1V/Pa @ 1kHz) and accurate transient response, resulting in a microphone that captures even the most subtle nuances with ease, with minimal interference from unwanted ambient noise.

With the Nova Black condenser microphone, complicated setups are a thing of the past. Thanks to an included windscreen, a purpose-designed shock-mount for mounting to a traditional mic stand and an XLR cable, everything you need to get connected and start recording is included.

Hear Every Detail:
Professional recording demands uncompromised accuracy when it comes to monitoring. M-Audio's HDH40 headphones combine premium transducer elements with a durable, rugged design to deliver superb sound reproduction and the outstanding acoustic isolation required in professional recording and monitoring environments. Long sessions are no problem! The plush padding reduces fatigue during extended use, and the over-the-ear design ensures that the HDH40 stays secured while you're wearing them. With the HDH40, you can concentrate on what's important - your production!

Included Software:
- AIR Creative FX Collection (20 world-class FX AU/VST plugins as made famous by Pro Tools)
- AIR Strike

Review: KMD's controversial Black Bastard album from 1994 draws on the stresses of going up as a person of colour in the United States of America. It is a sophomore record full of creativity and youthful energy from the group that included the legendary MF DOOM before he became MF DOOM. Musically the album veers from the raw to the bouncy while lyrically Black consciousness is explored as viewed through young-but-experienced eyes. The album was delayed in getting a release as group member Subroc sadly passed suddenly in 1993.

Review: Marina Trench's 'Impermeable En Ete' EP is a remarkable release that showcases the producer's exceptional production skills and versatility. Comprised of three original tracks and three remixes, this second release on Sweet State imprint firmly cements Trench as an artist on the rise. It offers a diverse range of sounds, from the nu-disco vibes of 'Ose' to the classic house feel of 'L'Orage' and the pop-influenced 'Hirondelle'. The remixes on the B-side are equally impressive, with Gerd Janson, Earl Jeffers and Tatyana Jane each putting their own unique spin on her compositions. Overall, this is an outstanding release that showcases Marina Trench's exceptional talent as a producer and artist.

He succeeds, too, with a selection of body-bopping electro infused with talk box robot voices from deep within a mystic forest in a celestial sky. After a scene-setting ambient opener come dazzling future disco delights, snappy electro-funk and playful cuts with naughty basslines. A varied EP full of fun as well as great form.

Review: "A document created in the shadow of incredible darkness. One from which the creator hadn't planned on escaping and still doesn't. Hence the title of the album. It is the result of an illness that I've battled my whole life. It isn't something that the world has done to me. It's the world I live in, and it's no one's fault."
So says Brian Christinzio, AKA BC Camplight, of his sixth album. As ever, it's a musical masterpiece packing dense layers of instrumental experimentation and theses-worthy lyrical poignance. An artist who has never played by the musical rules, fans of strong juxtapositions will again be in there element, with a tracklist that spans grunge-y garage rock, twisted barroom journeyman stuff, theatrical guitar pop, and plenty more. But the sounds themselves are only one half the genius. When it comes to arrangements, things are as playful as they are innovative, keeping listeners guessing as to how structures will pan out.

Review: Smoove's latest LP, the retro-modern funk take that is First Class, is primed for a spacious yet packed dancefloor. Smoove's deft emulatory production skills are once again put on full display, collecting vocal samples and original backing tracks from genres like funk, jazz, soul and hip-hop to produce something to the tune of 15 or so remixes. Bustling interpretations of Kraak & Smaak, Una Mas Trio, and Brenda Boykin render this a headsy yet unpretentious dance dazzler.

Project Corner Traps absorb sound energy where it is most intense: the corners of your studio.

With a lot of modern music it's the low frequencies that excite us most. How many musical styles are pretty-much defined by the bass line? We engineers and producers know this and it is one reason we spend so much time tweaking the low-end of our recordings. The other reason is that bass is just so difficult to mix accurately in the average sized studio.

And that's where Project Corner Traps come in - they help you hear what the low frequencies are really doing so you can easily produce mixes that get your listener moving.

Formed from our proven open cell acoustic foam, Project Corner Traps work on a broad range of frequencies that extend down into the all-important lows. They are designed to fit neatly into the vertical and horizontal corners of your studio where most bass problems form. Coving is no problem - Project Corner Traps feature an air gap at the back.

Use in combination with Project Corner Cubes for maximum absorption coupled with a modern studio look..

Review: Taking both acts on their core traits, Full Of Hell primarily deal in death-grind fusion with some blackened aspects and a powerviolence twist, with their tracks rarely crossing the two-minute threshold and their average album length clocking in at approximately 20 minutes and some change. Primitive Man on the other hand, are the type of abyss dwellers that deal in lengthy sonic dirges, often running for well over an hour at a time. What happens when you combine two unmatched forces of modern extremity into one nightmare-fuelled hellscape of sonic torture? You get a truly oppressive display of grinding, trudging sludge-soaked doom with walls of caustic harsh noise which drone on for lengthy uncomfortable sections. Ugly, slow, unwelcoming and vile, 'Suffocating Hallucination' does its utmost to earn its nihilistic title, and offers little in the way of hope on its successful pilgrimage into the abyss.

Review: Robert Armani is a Chicago-born techno artist who has been an influential figure in the scene since the early 90s. To celebrate his 30-year career, Armani's classic tracks such as 'Ambulance,' 'Hit Hard,' and 'Watch It' have been remastered and compiled in a collector's edition via Traxmen. These tracks defined the hard-hitting and exhausting sound of Chicago's techno, with its unique palette of samples (vocal one-shots, spitty drum machines) conveying as ever the culture of inhumanly capitalist overwork endemic to America's historic cities. Lead track 'Burn It Out' says it all. Chicago is the birthplace of the IWW, while Chicago house and techno is the mirror image of said workers' struggle, reflecting the relentless pulse of burnt-out machinery and debt peony through work. To do this, Armani uses the sounds of whips cracking, kick drum pistons clanging and and conveyor belts chugging, all while urging us to "burn it out".

Review: 'Strata Records: The Sound Of Detroit Volume 1' is a careful yet exquisite collection of soul, funk and jazz classics from Detroit's rich musical history, throwing back to a time before techno took the Motor City by storm. DJ Amir has curated a diverse selection of songs from the Strata Records catalog, showcasing the label's extensive roster of artists (the likes of Kenny Cox, The Soulmates, and Charles Mingus), and in some cases restoring tracks whose recordings have suffered a loss of quality over the years, for an ultimately soul-bearing listen.

Review: The Fourier label is back with more minimal dance floor magic, and the second release is a collaborative affair packed with talent. It's Aztec, Dark Male, Rob Bellfield and The Vast Profound who all come through here and start off with 'Sweet Music', a nice balmy and dubby cut for zoned out listening .'Unlimited Apex' pairs pensive basslines with smeared and expansive pads, then 'Standard Model' has a more warped and mind-melting cosmic take on warm, deep rolling tech. 'Silence After The Storm' is the gorgeously serene closer. Classy stuff for sure.

Review: Drumcode don't just do huge-room heaters, you know. 'When The Lights Go Down' is a strong case for the label's darker side, seeing to a generous three-track contribution from Neapolitan producer and DJ Roberto Capuano. The artist eschews an overindulgence in detuned trance saws for reese basses here, preferring to revel in the wealths of space offered by repeated kick drums and large reverberative spaces - as opposed to high-endy, sizzly sounds. The title track is the star, thanks to its riveting vocal line and guard-throwing rhythmic messups, which occur at the same time.

Review: If you ever wondered where the line between techno and hard dance lies these days, let Viper Diva be your guide. The collaborative project from Shlomo and Hadone is a boisterous barrel of fist-pumping fun with plenty of hard trance motifs filtered through that evil techno veneer. As 'Broken Dreams Club' explicitly "welcomes you to the gates of hell", you might well be reminded of the sound you'd as likely hear at an early 00s Tidy Weekender, but that's absolutely fine with us. '24/7 You' has a slightly more melodic tint, although still shot through with certain gothic malaise, while 'Love & Riot' brings some poppy vocal slithers into the mix to up the emotional factor without dialling back the punishing rhythm section.

Review: Some of Europe's finest purveyors of underground sounds come together on this fourth rase from the One Eye Witness label out of the Netherlands. Asphalt DJ kicks off and lays out a steamroller of a techno banger in 'Blades' which is pulsing, hard hitting but supple. RDS gets for a much more minimal and cosmic vibe on the tight and bouncy 'TH Only' then Ste Roberts brings some machismo and texture to 'Tune Pitch Decay' with its industrial tech aesthetic. Tammo Hesselink closes down the EP with the loose and bendy tones, scattered hits and late night minimal eeriness of 'Untitled 42.'

Review: Late Reflections is a live recording of Grandbrothers in an ancient Catholic cathedral. The one-of-a-kind concert saw them play music specially designed for the massive main nave (it stands 45 meters tall) and all of the magical acoustics of the unusual space are captured on vinyl. This is the fourth album from the German-Swiss duo known for their fusion of the old and the new. They once again blur the boundaries between ambient, classical, minimalism and electronic sound in richly textured piano pieces. There is a freeform and uprising atmosphere to these tunes that make you feel in constant ascendancy to the heavens, and it's beautiful indeed.

Review: Always injecting the field of turntables with playful flair from day one, Kid Koala is a seasoned hand at spreading joy with his creations. In that sense, his new album concept isn't a huge surprise, but that doesn't detract from it being a brilliant and novel idea. Creatures Of The Late Afternoon is a new double-LP which also serves as the soundtrack to the included board game, which Koala has developed and designed himself. The over-arching concept revolves around the titular creatures adventuring on a mission to make a band, prizing community and threading in some environmental values without making the point too bluntly. Hitting a sweet spot towards broad appeal while holding true to his dexterous deck-juggling legacy, it's another fine step on for the mighty Koala.

Review: Few modern hardcore acts have been able to generate the level of hype which Santa Cruz, California crossover thrash mob Drain effortlessly cultivated in the years since dropping their instant classic debut California Cursed in 2020. Making a name for themselves as a vital live act in a year where touring was literally impossible, anticipation has been rife for their sophomore effort with Epitaph Records who scooped the band up following their seal of approval from Revelation. Living Proof serves as an elevation of every strength from the retro 80s indebted riffage to the crushing breakdowns and frontman Sammy Ciaramitaro's beastly snarl. Complete with bouncing anthems of communal venom while also sporting a shockingly faithful Descendents cover in the form of 'Good Good Things', which hints at effortless melodious tendencies, this long overdue follow up is set to ignite the Drain momentum even further, and cement them as forerunners of the global expansion and recognition of hardcore as a respected movement.

They make some of the most original and striking guitar-fuelled sounds around, with breathy vocals, lush melodies and introspective songwriting, wielding a powerful, lunging sound that will keep hardcore fans happy but might also appeal to the heavier end of the alternative spectrum - we're thinking Sonic Youth or Hole fans.

Review: Santa Cruz based hardcore upstarts Scowl follow up their blistering 2021 debut full-length How Flowers Grow with the genre-bending EP Psychic Dance Routine. Channelling riot grrl spirit and embracing influences from the likes of X-Ray Spex, The Breeders and L7, these five new cuts showcase the true range of frontwoman Kat Moss who trades in her feral bark for a sultry cadence, with results landing somewhere between Hole or The Distillers if they were at a dingy basement show. Following on from an appearance at Coachella (the first instance of the festival ever offering their expansive platform to hardcore acts), it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to see Scowl branching out and diversifying their sound in such brazen fashion. What is surprising is just how naturally they've managed to bridge the gap between hardcore and hook-laden anthems, resulting in a tight snappy display of where their artistic intentions lay for the promising future ahead.

The Detroit reedman was always in a class of one and he showed it here with a record so heavy it was way ahead of its time. Now though it's regarded as a classic with trumpet from Marcus Belgrave, Charles Eubanks on keyboards, Ike Daney on drums, and Will Austin on bass. There are also some spoken word passages from the Black Messengers making this a jewel of the jazz underground.

Stonkers like 'Do What You Want' and 'Fuck Armageddon…This Is Hell' morphed out of the insular Swedish studio and into the impressionable mind of the young punk fan, truly leaving behind an irrepressible legacy for the scene in years to come. The band's melodic trademark and conscious, philosophical lyrics shine through as ever on this reissue, all while reproducing original show flyers and handwritten lyric sheets.

The results were showcased on Welcome To Dubrock, which here finally gets a sequel. The concept remains the same, and the results are equally as impressive. Our picks include a wonderfully skeletal extended take on 'Rastaman Live Up', a tactile, suitably spaced-out dub of 'So Much Trouble', a Lee Perry-esque dub run-through of 'One Drop', and a sub-aquatic, echo-laden version of 'Ride Natty Ride'. It's Bob Marley and the Wailers at their best, but not how you've heard them before.

Review: Born in Algeria, when it was still among France's colonies, to French parents who themselves claimed Italian heritage, it makes perfect sense that Edouard Joseph Scotto Di Suoccio would wind up making music that seemed born out of a very different place to the one you're looking at. No matter what, or where, you're gazing upon. Strange tunes that take some describing, let's start at the beginning. Following his series of chanson singles released in the late-1960s under the pseudonym Ted Scotto, by the middle of the next decade he'd adopted the Tregger alias and was dipping toes into tones along the lines of what Space Oddities is packed with. First laidback jazz funk, things became more and more exploratory, sci-fi, disco, and kosmische influenced as the years went by. That legacy is remembered and honoured today on some of the world's finest groove-soaked dancefloors and the DJs that dominate them, with this collection giving an insight into the more experimental end of that oeuvre.

Review: The Pale Blue project brings together Italians Do It Better's Mike Simonetti and Silver Hands' Elizabeth Wright, and the pair have done a fine job thus far exploring a club-ready kind of pop noir. On this single, the original version of 'No More Words' is present in its moody, subtly acidic form, Wright's coquettish vocal sitting atop the warm analogue backdrop oh-so comfortably. DJ Tennis steps up with a remix which edges a little more tech house bite into the rhythm section, and then on the B-side Perel offers up two much wilder versions which nod to Italo and industrial as much as anything contemporary.

Review: Sharon Van Etten is an American singer-songwriter who dropped her sixth studio album We've Been Going About This All Wrong last year and captured plenty of the wrought emotions we all had during Covid. It showed she is very much on top of her game and the tenth anniversary edition of Tramp reminds us she has been for decades. This special version comes on limited edition heavyweight crimson splash vinyl and includes a new unreleased track. There is a reason this record was critically acclaimed at the time and has remained a fan favourite.

Review: When vital bandmember Andrew Fletcher suddenly passed away at the start of the sessions for 'Memento Mori', even Dave Gahan and Martin Gore wondered aloud whether Depeche Mode would continue. Yet somehow, Gore and Gahan put their much-discussed differences aside, knuckled down and produced something fittingly special: an album that may well be the iconic outfit's most consistent and impressive body of work for decades. Naturally, darkness abounds, with opener 'My Cosmos Is Mine' - all evocative vocals, distorted electronic beats, dark sonic textures and mutilated choral vocal samples - setting the tone for a set that once again brilliantly blends dark synth-pop, gnarled guitars and the kind of lyrical melancholia that stays with you for days. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including 'Ghosts Again', 'Soul With Me' and closing cut 'Speak To Me'.

Review: Depeche Mode's latest album Memento Mori is one that has been madly anticipated by fans. The record - which comes on wax and in a lovely embossed sleeve here - centres on the mood of grief after the passing of the band's founding member Andrew "Fletch" Fletcher, this is the first LP by a Depeche Mode made up of only two remaining members: Dave Gahan and Martin Gore. The band's progression in their latest years have heard them move into darker, peakier, sadder and more industrial themes, as they make do with a future-present that wasn't promised to them in the 80s, while drawing on deathly topoi and nodding to Ingmar Bergman.

Review: If you're a fan of the original heavyweight roots sounds then Akae Beka's Rule The Time is the sort of record you need to hear. He brings soulful melodies to deep, multi-layered songwriting, an unwavering devotion to RasTafari and healing moods across his work which totaled over 70 albums in his accomplished career. He sadly lost his life in 2019 but his legacy lives on not least through this album which is now reissued some 16 years after it first arrived. It has potent drums and shame vocals with basslines that anchor you to the floor and creative musical arrangements that make a real impression.

Review: Siamese Twins Nic Ford, Khun Fluff, and Temple Rat team up with sonic reinterpreters Jonathan Kusuma, Konduku and Higher Intelligence Agency, for the Katha Remixes - adding to the recently popularised genre of amphibious techno. While the label Siamese Twins normally go for cassette, this neat precision V/A release is a yellow vinyl number. Like a noctile toad stalking the night, the tracks here range from dark organic chuggers to jumpy synaptors to melodic bloopers, all reflecting different facets of the amphibian master genome.
