Review: There's a lot to be said for artists that take their time. In a career that reaches back to 2003, Marc Barrite has issued just a handful of EPs and one album under his Dave Aju moniker. Roosting in his preferred home of Circus Company has provided Barrite with ample space in which to develop his wayward sound. Unlike some who find a style and stick to it, each passing year finds a different kind of Dave Aju gracing our ears. Where the concept on his last album Open Wide was using just a mouth as a sound source, on Heirlooms all sounds have been sampled from instruments passed on to Barrite by his late father. However the starting concept is but a springboard from which he crafts his own vision for house music, and as with his previous output it's a loose, free-flowing version of what the music normally entails. What makes Aju so wonderful is that his music transcends any genre trappings; people who detest house music would still have a good chance of finding pleasure in his craft. Perhaps it's in the sunny Californian demeanour that seems to inform everything he does. Perhaps it's in his refusal to play by the rules. Whatever the case, Heirlooms represents yet another leap forward for a constantly shifting artist.

Review: Having released upwards of 15 singles since first emerging in 2005, it's probably high time that German producer Nick Curly delivered his debut album. Between the Lines is in many ways typical of his recent output, offering a cosy but curiously distant take on deep house peppered with organic instrumentation, touchy-feely vocals (see the excellent "Piano in the Dark"), chiming melodies and comfy chords. It's clearly designed for home listening rather than heavy club rotations, but that's no bad thing. There are, of course, club-friendly cuts - see the hypnotic, Berlin-does-Detroit melodies of "Hairline" and jazz shuffle of "You Don't Have To Hopp" - but these are merely pleasant diversions along the way.

Review: Just when you'd thought the days of beat banging the locked grooves of Jeff Mills for hours had been consigned to techno history, the vinyl trickery seems to be enjoying something of a resurgence of late. Berlin type Stefan Goldmann takes it to the extreme on his latest opus, The Grand Hemiola, which offers up a bewildering 144 locked grooves across a variety of polyrhythms. Needless to say it's all a bit too high concept for us to attempt an explanation but the possibilities seem very interesting. Goldmann deems to include six traditional album cuts as well which tend to congregate around the more abstract corners of the techno spectrum.

Review: Those with good memories may remember Sacred Rhythm's late '90s and early 2000s sister label Natural Resource, which existed primarily as an outlet for founder Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's "deeper, electronic soundscape" style productions. SORA, which debuts with this coloured vinyl 10", is its' replacement. Clausell is naturally in top form across both productions. A-side 'Subtle Light' is undeniably"gorgeous, with Clausell wrapping twinkling, sunset-friendly piano solos, shimmering synth strings and spacey electronics around a tactile, undulating dream house bassline and hybrid drum machine/hand percussion beats. On B-aside 'Peakaboo We See You', the long-serving NYC producer opts for a darker, more heads-down 'deep-tech' sound, adding raw, rough and menacing stabs, tribal style percussion hits and bold aural textures to a weighty, peak-time-ready house beat.

Review: This acid tech-trance gem was first released in 1996, and first made an appearance on the suitably Star Trek-themed Spock Records, an Italian label that saw to much trance of the utmost quality get released during its Italo heyday. The victim of horrible scalping, it's well overdue for a rerelease. 'Fun-K' is the highlight, showing off producer Bhasmantam's (Gieuseppe Pol's) sensitive and detail-oriented trance production chops, straddling euphoria and technicality in a manner that does not alienate or confuse. The remaining tunes are more breathable and minimal affairs, but all build a world that captivate as they do enthrall.

Review: '90s label Air Trance communication made a comeback in February this year by reissuing some cuts from Italian legend Francesco Farfa, whose career has spanned over 30 years. They went down well with new school connoisseurs and now get backed up with another gem from the man as well as a couple of remixes. 'Laser Beam' is vivid cosmic techno with smeared synths, vocal samples and chunky drums locking you into the groove as mad melodies rain down. Alex Neri remixes it into a more smooth and silky techno bumper and the MIKI Rmx brings raw percussion and alien life forms to the mix.

Review: Silat Beksi has been busy this year. Remarkably, this expansive double-pack on Burnski's Constant Black label - officially his second full-length excursion and first for six years - is the Ukrainian producer's fifth vinyl missive of 2020. Mate is a fluid, off-kilter and sonically detailed affair, with manipulated jazz samples, oddball spoken word snippets and pots-and-pans percussion mingling with outer-space tech-house grooves, bouncy deep house rhythms, the eccentric stereo panning of Ricardo Villalobos and the locked-in hypnotism of Eastern European minimal techno. It's a sonic palette that guarantees thrills throughout, with Beksi doing a brilliant job of showcasing his distinctive production style.

Review: Halle's Monaberry imprint receives nowhere near the amount of praise that it should. In all honesty, this has been one of the most consistent imprints to grace the tech-house sphere, with artists like Super Flu bringing some innovation and cutting-edge to that particular dance formula. Here, we have the label's seventh edition of the Herberts Best series, with a whole selection of new artists being given the chance to shine - including the ever-present Super Flu, of course. Stand-out tracks include "Gattara" by Bebetta, a tribalesque deep house joint with mounds of hypnotics; Jobe's "Maasai" makes for a supremely dubbed-out ocean of sonics; Sobek's "Handmade Desire" adds some industrial waves to what is a relatively 'housey' EP; "Arpo33" by Douglas Greed ends with a painfully on-point tech groove that dancers will find impossible not to shake to.
