Review: Australian alternative rock band The Church put out their sixth studio album in 1990. It's best known for the breakout rock hit 'Metropolis' and performed commercially well overall after the successes of 1988 hit album Starfish, Gold Afternoon Fix . An interesting nugget for fact fans is that this album is their first of the band's not to feature a 12 string guitar as Marty Wilson-Piper's instrument got stolen on a previous tour. The subtle change in sound didn't derail the band and they continued to pick up more and more fans for their lilting grooves and lyrical subjects such as love, loss and plenty in between. The band were induced into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010.

Review: Whoever wrote the release notes to Matthew E White's long-awaited return to the release schedule, take a bow. "Retro-futurist magic tricks," they say about his music. While the wording is abstract enough to border on nonsense, we're struggling to think of a better way to describe K Bay. It's constantly switching things up on you, producing one white rabbit from a black hat after another. Even expecting the unexpected can't save you from being consistently (and pleasantly) surprised.
Throughout the course of the record you'll find epic string balladry, 1980s pop, disco, funk, dad rock, acoustic guitar work, and marching band oddities. It's a varied celebration that truly summarises the musical era we are living in - best described simply as post modern. Here comes another one that has had a full remaster job before being pressed to heavyweight wax and housed in an even heavier weight sleeve. Don Rendell was in no uncertain terms a towering figure in British modern jazz for more than 50 years. He was not only there when the genre evolved into what it is today, but was driving that evolution with his masterful playing and compositional skills as part of this famous quintet. Review: Ken Wheeler was a musician who was more than well schooled in the conventions of charts and dance bands. But for this project he cut loose and show a more improvisational skill and free will to go off-grid It's his debut album and was recorded with the John Dankworth Orchestra featuring a young John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass and various other talents who all helped make this such a fine example of modern jazz, big band and orchestral styles. Tunes like 'Propheticape' swell and build to tune peaks before all energy is dissipated and the trumpet is left to rebuild. 'Altisidora' is more quiet and subtle with oboes and gelt percussion setting the mood. 'Bachelor Sam' is a wandering wonder. Lovely.

Review: Wave Function is the brand new label from Maltese producer Sound Synthesis. Like many artists, he hit a fine run of form during the lockdown and has once out the other side just as on it. He's put out more than 12 releases in the last year or so and now mints his own new concern with a superb double album of timeless, spaced-out electro. This is the sort of sci-fi tackle that takes you on smooth groove cruises through the planets, with tipsy synths and heavenly pads all soothing the trip. Electro as emotive as this will always tune a place in our racks.

Review: Scritti Politti made three albums for Virgin and all of them are now being reissued by band leader Green Gartside's current record label, Rough Trade, this year. Cupid & Psyche 85 first came in 1985 and is now presented with new sleeve notes that reunite Gartside with keyboardist and co-producer David Gamson. These are the first reissues of any kind from Scritti Politti, and it coincides with a forthcoming tour that runs in autumn and celebrates 35 years of Cupid & Psyche 85. Politti's brand of alternative indie is close to as sweet as it gets on this record, with plenty of sensuality and sweet but never sickly pop tropes.

Review: If you've never been to Leeds then let's put it like this i Scritti Politti make a lot of sense if you know the city well enough. Long before 'the first Harvey Nichols outside London' and the refurbishment of the historic arcades there was dereliction and squats. If you look hard enough, you'll still find them, but it's out of that 1970s economic woe that Scritti Politti emerged, kicking, screaming and squatting while blending various spheres of influence into a punk framework.
Within a decade, though, they would leave that rough and ready remit behind, at least in part, and adopt a more mainstream pop approach. Review: The Sonor Music Editions label is serving up a welcome reissue of the soundtrack of the cult Italian cult movie Emanuelle in America. It comes in super limited quantities with just 500 vinyl copies pressed and the whole thing has been remastered for the occasion. The sex thriller movie was directed by the legendary Joe D'Amato and its music was overseen by Nico Fidenco. Fittingly, the sounds are super libidinous, sexy and seductive, with sultry strings and 70s porno vibes never too far away. This one is for adults only, for sure.

The title translates to "The World is Yours" in Latin and the Dutch MC says it has a standalone concept that mixes Dutch and English raps. Review: Tenor saxophonist Billy Harper played with many of the greats of the hard bop and post-bop era, and they in turn often guested on his solo albums. He made loads of those over the course of his career, with 1975's Black Saint being arguably the most revered. Joined by bassist David Friesen, drummer Malcolm Pinson, pianist Joe Bonner and trumpeter Virgil Jones, Harper delivered an album in which his expressive, energetic, fluid and occasionally near breathless solos took centre stage on a trio of epic, post-bop workouts. The real star of the show remains 21-minute flipside 'Call of the Wild and Peaceful Hearts', which moves from quiet contemplation to riotous intensity via some genuinely breezy and attractive middle sections.

Review: You've always been able to hear the West Coast in Monocoastal, but it's particularly present when you shut your eyes after 12 months of lockdown stopping you from visiting the region. Less active L.A., and more observing in Oregon, Fischer's career didn't end with this in 2011 and the multi-disciplinary artist has produced great things since, but the album is certainly one of turning points in terms of reputation and note.
The idea of slowly watching time unfold in un-rushed places is also highly appropriate. Among the washes of tape and the waves of refrain that make up this beautiful, meditative outing, you'll hear takes and half-harmonies from found instruments including a piano and xylophone. Overall, it feels like a place removed from linearity. A liminal masterpiece, if you are that way inclined.
