Review: Across releases for Sound Pellegrino, ClekClekBoom and Youngunz, Bambounou has shown himself to be one of France's brightest new talents in the crossover world between techno and bass music - his debut album for Modeselektor's 50 Weapons stable has been keenly anticipated, and thankfully, it doesn't put a foot wrong. As well combining the raw bass physicality of producers like Objekt and Digital Mystikz in tracks like "Any Other Service" and "Capsule Process", the broken techno rhythms of producers like Shed in "Data" and "Splaz", the bright UKF hybrid styles of DVA and Champion and footwork inspired sampling on "Mass" and "Let Me Get", Orbiting offers a uniquely French take on bass, with "Great Escape" and "Challenger" even giving the palette of 90s French touch a contemporary spin. Easily the best 50 Weapons album this year, which in a year that has seen Shed and Addison Groove provide long players for the imprint is no mean feat.

Review: OBG is a third thrilling album of inventive dub rhythms from the one they call Branko. He is the Buraka Som Sistema co-founder and Enchufada label-head and here he gets more personal and intimate than ever before. He has said the album is a "letter of love and thanks to the community around him" and it takes its cues from his homeland of Portugal's beautiful landscapes with bass heavy, lumpy rhythms at the core. Elements of kuduro, kizomba, zouk, baile funk and more all future with organic texture, lush vocals and warm paints over always low slung grooves. Another classic from the main man.

Review: Breaka returns with Aeoui, a highly anticipated second album that will again establish his reputation as a bass music innovator. Charlie Baker continues to evolve here with his mix of footwork, techno and dancehall influences and jazz drumming background all coming together into fresh club rhythms. The album's unique vibe emerged from a burst of jet-lagged inspiration in late 2023 and led to tracks like 'Squashy Track' and 'YOLO Bass Rewind' which both off-set a mix of organic and synthetic elements, Afro-Cuban rhythms, 'amapiano' and psychedelic influences. Breaka's sound remains unlike anything else.

Review: Hyperdub's year of excellence continues apace with the release of Playing Me, the long awaited debut album from Cooly G. Emerging as a key figure in the UK funky scene some four years ago via some highly prized Dub Organiser CDrs, Cooly's musical progression has been charted via a series of EPs for DVA Music and Hyperdub. On this thirteen track album what is most apparent is the confidence this South London producer has in her own singing, a voice that sounds dipped in pain and anguish at times. At others Cooly utilises her vocal delivery as an integral part of the music, which draws from all manner of UK music history of recent times whilst very much sounding part of her modern house template. Oh and there's a Coldplay cover to end the LP too...

Review: Brothers Disclosure bring the sound of house and more to the mainstream in incredible fashion, merging poppy vocals with basslines inspired by the likes of the Windy City's Mr Fingers and RP Boo. Furthermore there's splashes of UK styles like garage and dubstep in tracks like "Superego" and "Moving Mountains" and there's even smatterings of footwork in "Echoes". There's Ibiza-charged hits like "Nocturnal" to the skipping beats of "Holding On" that will make you think Daniel Bedingfield's made a comeback had Gregory Porter's lyrics not been there. And for some sublime club fodder check out "Hourglass".

Review: The instantly palatable grime and garage of DJ Q has been satisfying bassline lovers for many a year, not least with his appearances on Local Talk. Now Shollen Quarshie follows up on the mixtape showcase he did for Unknown To The Unknown with a full length album proper, and its packed full of the plush production and catchy hooks you would expect. There's a whiff of techno about the dreamy synths that open the album, not least with the spiralling notes that hover over the trap-rave stylings of "Two Faced", but elsewhere there's a wholesome dose of sugar-coated jungle with the pop vocal stylings of Kassandra and Louise Williams. It's a diverse album with a broad appeal to those who like their beats immediate and colourful, and might just be one of the unlikeliest pop albums of the year.

Review: Dusk and Blackdown have been operating on the progressive end of the dubstep spectrum for some time, having released their first material way back in 2005. Desaflex, their second full-length, continues where previous sets left off, offering a deep but surprisingly floor-friendly take on dubstep. Taking influences from a variety of sources - IDM, electronica, garage and UK funky, most obviously - they offer-up a series of well-polished but pleasingly analogue-sounding cuts full of energy and, most importantly, good ideas. At times, their brand of finely tuned bass-tronica sounds like early Black Dog with a dubstep pulse, at others like a futurist outing to Croydon. Throughout, it's a delightful listen.

Review: Todd Edwards is affectionally known as Todd the God because of his skills. Those skills are two fold - he famous fomented this own style of garage with quick beats and cut up vocals used like an extra instrument in the mix. But he is also a badass DJ who can slam through house and garage with high energy and plenty of charger. As such, he is rightly celebrated here with an overdue entry into Defected's long running House Masters series. All his most famous joints make the cut, from the bumping remix of St Germain to the lively vocal soul of his dub of Kim English via originals like his jazzy, chord laced anthem 'Push The Love.'

Review: Everything Is Alright, says FINN. And it is, frankly, when you're lost in the midst of his new album on 2 B Real. It's a superbly fun and feelgood mix of house from the 90s, UK garage from this revival era and contemporary sound designs. The title track opens up and soon sweeps you off to a good place then there are loose vocals and bright chords on 'AYOYO' while 'Ere U R' sinks into a deeper groove with a heavy sense of plod and more fresh melodies. The B-side picks up the pace with the retro house throb of 'Things, Things, Things!' and 'Big Raver' brings the pianos that will set the club alight.

Review: If there is a more hyped artist in the world right now than Fred... again we aren't sure who it might be. The lad who grew up close to Brian Eno and has since worked with him in the studio is a global star who has also collaborated with Four Tet and Skrillex, played all over the world, won various awards and dropped several albums now presses up his acclaimed USB to gatefold double vinyl. It is a collection of his early singles that captures his lo-fi, lived-in, diaristic sounds across a range of experimental electronic styles.

Review: Oskar Allen and Luke Barnett are Glume & Phossa, but beyond that we dot know much about them, Musically this superb album shows that they bridge the gap between electronica, trap and hip-hop with plenty of slick and sleek minimal rhythms and glistening synths. There's a psychedelic edge to these sounds - hyper real melodies and warped vocal sounds - that makes it otherworldly and futuristic at the same tie as having the sort of nostalgic chords that remind you of a time you probably never actually lived. Brilliant stuff for either home listening or the dance floor.

Review: Those with their ear to the drum & bass underground will know that Hugh Hardie has been dropping slick tunes on Hospital Records for many years. The Cambridge-raised producer made a move to Solvent Records recently though and now is back with his third album, Jukebox. It is his best yet with early singles 'Blush' featuring Zara Kershaw and 'Face Off' with PAV4N of Foreign Beggars already winning plenty of plaudits. He shows his widescreen sound off in all its glory here - there are soul drenched rollers, lush vocal tunes and collaborations with the likes of Footsie, Degs, Killa P and more.

Review: South London's innovative Ben Hauke unveils his highly anticipated debut album, Club Cute, here on Touching Bass, a label helmed by Errol and Alex Rita. Known for his dynamic and genre-blending beats, Hauke has carved his own path over the past decade and that carries on here with a rich album featuring collabs with acclaimed artists like Goya Gumbani, Katy B and Shy One, among others. Across the course of the record, he effortlessly melds diverse influences into a cohesive whole as he traverses deep house rhythms, UK garage grooves, and tough techno beats. Review: According to Banoffee folklore, How Du was sent by a nearby star-system and harbours some deep patterns of evil. He also boasts some remarkable beat skills as this debut album showcases in great detail. Sitting somewhere between IG Culture and Kode 9, there's a deep swing set in the stony, foreboding aesthetics that allows warmth and soul to shine through at the wonkiest of moments. The jazzy, loosely hewn two-step of "Life Line", the finger-clicking hopscotch and woozy sunrise chords of "Daze" and the come-to-bed shuffles and sighs of "2 Worlds" are just three on-point examples. Review: Instinct has been one of the key protagonists in garage's ongoing renaissance. Not only have his tunes given a fresh take on the much loved old sound, but there have been plenty of them, too. Now he's back with yet another full length, and once again it's packed with heat. There are deep shufflers that nod to the original US garage sound, as well as darker, 2-step tinged get downs. More so than before, there seem to be plenty of reversed bass stabs and MC vocals, old school signifiers and jungle breaks that pay homage to the roots of the sound while never simply copying it. The heart aching vocal of 'Don't Know' is our fave and a likely candidate for one of this summer's standout tunes.

Review: Already in the ether since December last year, the debut album from Kodama (also known as Acid Lab) has been rousing Urban Poetry fans for several months already. Now it's even further out into the cosmos and its glacial, isolating sounds seem even more fitting for the times. Ambient in spirit, wonderfully vast in nature, the atmospheres and moods play the lead role, creating their own world regardless of tempo and style. But within those styles you'll stumble over woozy half time, you'll trip over loose-limbed UKG and fall head over heals into the vast spaces of broken techno littered throughout. A truly impressive and immersive piece of work.

Review: Made over the course of 10 years, Yesterday Is Heavy is the sound of Lil Silva stepping outside of his comfort zone to deliver a much anticipated debut album. Having worked alongside Mark Ronson, Adele and more, the Lil Silva story is now coming full circle with heavyweight guest appearances from the likes of Sampha, Ghetts, Little Dragon and serpentwithfeet, while Benji B was on hand to offer some musical direction. All those extra ingredients are a bonus, but at heart this is Silva's record through and through, and it serves as a perfect declaration of all he has achieved in his glittering career to date.

Review: Mother is Logic1000's debut album. An alias of Samantha Poulter, the Berlin-based DJ and producer explains it has been insured by her becoming a parent. "I felt so much love and inspiration entering into motherhood that I just needed to create something really powerful," says the producer who hails from Sydney and has collaborated on the lad single 'Grown On Me' with her husband and long-time creative partner Thom McAlister. It is an album that runs that gamut from broken beats to smoky soul, shuffling basement grooves to heady and hypotonic, dubbed-out rollers.

Review: Tru Thoughts' long running Shapes compilation series has always been a good barometer of the label's current state of health. In recent years, some Shapes sets have been a little flabby round the edges, as if Robert Luis' imprint had acquired a middle-aged spread. This instalment, though, is one of the best for a while. Luis acts as curator, picking out some faves from the last 12 months. There's plenty to enjoy, with a good mix of dancefloor-rockin' remixes, dancehall-flavoured jams and soul and jazz-flecked originals (see the Freddie Cruger/Antony Mills' brilliant "Heroione") There are also some pleasant surprises, with Behling & Simpson's swinging rework of Quantic & Russell's "Magdelena" and Cottam's sweaty Batacuda-house jam "Hit The Wall" standing out.

Review: Rapidly following up 2011's superb Keysound long-player Routes, production trio LV make a logical move to Hyperdub for Sebenza, an album that features a trio of South African vocal talent, including Okmalumkoolkat from Dirty Paraffin, Spoek Mathambo and MC/producer duo, Ruffest, and production that takes in Kwaito, Soca, kuduro and UK funky to create its own unique sound. Standouts include the dark and urgent title track, the snappy vocal wit of "Animal Prints" and the spiky digital dancehall of "Nothing Like Us". But like Routes, Sebenza is much more than simply a collection of disparate dance tracks, but a rich tapestry of influences that is light years ahead of their nearest competition.

Review: Alix Perez's 1985 Music label is a constant source of cutting-edge variations within D&B, and so it continues as Monty delivers his debut album Hit The Lights. The Toulouse-based artist has been blazing a trail since first appearing around 2015, displaying variety and flair in his sound which always hinted at the potential for an incredible album. Now it's finally here, and it doesn't disappoint, veering from the vocal-licked catchiness of 'Vibin' to the exquisitely sculpted dubstep pressure of 'Dreamer' (with Perez himself in tow on the buttons). There's a lot to take in, including guest spots from Chimpo, Eva Mango and Visages, rounding out a mature and accomplished album, just like we always suspected.

Review: Joey Negro unleashes more funky and soulful house classics as seen on the first volume of this compilation series and there's more where that came from. The legendary Ron Trent remixes his own USG project on "Mcameu" and once you hear that Rhodes piano melody of Bougie Soliterre's "Got That Bug" you'll realise its of those classics you always knew of, just didn't know the name! You can see how sounds on "The Murder Track" by Mike Delgado influenced producers like The Mountain People and still to this day no one makes house music as sexy as Robert Owens, as heard on the classic "Gotta Work"

Review: You can always rely on Joey Negro when it comes to compiling the best of house, disco, soul.. anything really! And you can add this one to the list. Dave Lee presents a selection of classics that's up there alongside with The Soul of Disco compilations, Nite:life 08 and The Trip. Featuring some true classics such as the CJ Mackintosh remix of "Voices In My Mind" (complete with soaring vocals courtesy of India), Joe Clausell's classic "Ladbroke Grove" which is always a worthy addition (particularly when that absolutely mental piano roll rushes in) and there's plenty more. Legends such as Mateo & Matos, Mood II Swing and Ralphi Rosario all appear, even Joey Negro himself who turns in a sweet remix of Thelma Houston's "All of That".

Review: Low-cal melodic pop d&b done from a new-gen perspective: Piri & Tommy's take on drum & bass has been a runaway success in the last two years as the couple bring their own unique song writing signature to the genre. Now to mark this year's RSD, their debut album Froge.mp3 enjoys a limited vinyl outing and it sounds amazing for it. Cuts like the sing-along 'On & On' and the lofi dreaminess 'Slowly But Surely' and the sun-kissed summer joint 'Beachin' all still sparkling as bright as they did when they first dropped last year, this is a significant moment for Piri & Tommy. Review: A Little Part Of Shade is the second album from Swiss producer Ripperton, arriving some three years on from his decidedly luscious debut long player Niwa. As was the case with that debut, A Little Part Of Shade sees release via Joris Voorn and Edwin Oosterwal's Green label, and this collaboration heavy album arrives with Ripperton having made moves to establish his own outlet via the fledgling Tamed Musiq label. This thirteen track set is a mature one from Ripperton, demonstrating all new levels of mood setting in an effort to deliver that most elusive of goals; a cohesive electronic artist album. Ripperton's talent for fluidly written, playful melodies is highlighted and the choice of vocalists really makes matters work - see Hemlock Smith's breezy turn on standout track "Tape Hiss".

Review: Mike Skinner is surely deserving of National Treasure status by now, is he not? From mischievous young MC upstart to garage innovator and now the voice of the nation, his journey has been remarkable and as this album shows it isn't done yet. He said in the built-up to it that for the first time in his career, he has allowed himself to be more loose with his lyrics, to say enigmatic things, make odd references and use stranger metaphors that might not always make perfect sense but that feel right in the moment. That makes it a great listen, as well as all the usual catchy hooks and compelling beats.

Review: When you look back at the first PlayStation several landmark releases spring to mind - Resident Evil, Tekken 2, Crash Bandicoot - the list could go on much longer and should definitely include Wipeout and Wipeout 2097. Both were renowned for combining high pace, futuristic visuals with contemporary electronic club music from some of the biggest producers and acts at the time. Less remembered, in Europe at least, is the Ape Escape series, an intense party-platform title which arguably has the greatest dance music game score of all time. Comprising six tracks from that saga, this compilation of Soichi Terada's soundtracks emphasises that bold point. Opening on the crisp, punchy techno drive of 'Specters Factory', we find ourselves in suitably spooky jungle ('Haunted House'), rumbling dnb ('Spectors Castle') and roughneck hardcore bass ('Coasters'), among other made up genres. A collection which resembles Terada's amazing 1996 album, Sumo Jungle and makes a case for the Japanese enigma as one of dance music's most underrated geniuses.

Review: Tom 'Toddla T' Bell has enjoyed a rapid rise to the higher echelons of dance music thanks to a robust sound rooted in the twin attractions of dancehall and B-more. For this second album for Ninja Tune, he seems hell bent on proving his eclectic credentials. With deviations into piano-laden, breakbeat-driven house, murky R&B, post dubstep-pop and Prince-ish sexfunk, plus collaborations with Roisin Murphy, Roots Manuva and Shola Ama, Watch Me Dance comes on like a contemporary take on Basement Jaxx - albeit with a distinct Sheffield twist (listen out for nods to Steel City bleep techno, Moloko and long-forgotten beat manglers the All Seeing I).

Review: Soul Jazz's love affair with UK bass music continues on the second 12" volume of the Riddim Box compilation. Following their lauded Future Bass opus, this collection features the best of the UK funky underground, with Lil' Silva, LV, DVA and Crazy Cousinz among the artists featured. The beat driven genre has been a fertile ground for a slew of young British producers (and a few older heads too), who have positioned themselves at the forefront of the scene, exploring new musical tastes that touch on house, garage, R&B and more besides. This compilation perfectly captures the sound of these early pioneers.

Review: Shall Not Fade mark five years in the game with a celebratory compilation of highlights from various artists who have helped establish the label as one of house music's best. There are big contemporary names like DJOKO keeping things deep and seductive with 'It AllComes To An End', legends like Hanna with his famously lush and musical downbeat sounds on 'Reality Check' and plenty in between. Jacques Renault's 'This Way That Way' is a shuffling house cut with bustling crowd noises and Jaymie Silk's 'CyberPunk' is an all out techno rave assault.

Review: Deeper States Volume 2 is another installment of fresh sounds from producers who have come through a competition that set them to making proper deep hose with a specified sample library. Across four sides of wax, there are some mighty fine cuts here such as the deep garage inflections of Enrico Dragoni, some Motor City vibes from Scott Andrews, the deepest of dub techno workouts from Montreal courtesy of Dealin', soul-drenched late-night cruisers from Khalid Ali on 'Elevate' and some nice bubbly vocal vibes from Dublin don Oscide with his 'Free Your Mind.' This is another hugely effective and stylish EP from the Interweaved community.

Review: Having been slowly but surely groomed by the label since first emerging some two years ago, Walton now delivers a long-player of his slick, melodic bass music for Hyperdub, sounding right at home in the hinterland Kode9's stable inhabits. There's a degree of electro intent at work on the warm and easy-grooving "Need To Feel" that kicks the album off in earnest, but you're just as likely to get side-tracked into the glossy purple-isms of "Can't U See" with its trappist beats and dreamy undertones. Elsewhere "You & Me" captures a feverish industrial house conundrum full of oddball sampling, while "Memories" splays out its rhythm across a spacious mix of attention-deficit sonics and measured bass stabs. There's a fresh approach at every turn that keeps you on your toes throughout this bright and bold debut album.

Review: Keysound continue to act as a platform for bustling new talent within the realm of contemporary grime and dubstep, with their latest album length project coming from 22 year-old production prodigy Wen. Much like recent Keysound LP alumnus E.M.M.A., Wen is a relative newcomer, with just a few 12? releases last year and an appearance on the Keysound compilation This Is How We Roll to his name. Coming through with a debut album so soon is a bold move then, but there's a confidence to Wen's productions demonstrated throughout the twelve tracks on Signals that keeps you coming back for more. Heavy usage of coded samples of dense London slang and live pirate radio throughout help broadcast the album's themes of "power, locale, identity, intent, inequality, sexuality, gender, diversity, energy", whilst Wen can call on some high profile collaborations with label boss Blackdown and grime legend and "original Don Dada" Riko both featuring.
