Tootee (part 2) (3:53)
Review: The long-running Mushi 45 label from Japan is back with another big serving of Afro-tinged funk. This 45rpm is limited to just 300 copies and features both parts of Afro Breed's Toootee. It is our first brush with this artist but we like what we hear here - 'Tootee (part 1)' has a James Brown-style take on funk with trilling acoustic guitar and tumbling drum breaks under big vocals. 'Tootee (part 2)' introduces a more libidinous sax sound that is steamy and sultry and seductive.

Let Them Know

Let Them Know (feat The Cuban Brothers) (3:37)
Lightning In A Bottle (feat Andy Cooper) (3:22)
Review: If pure party-starting pleasure is your thing, you'll find plenty of instant gratification within the bulging catalogue of Bristol boys The Allergies. Alternatively, you could start with the pair's new seven-inch single, which boasts two steaming summer anthems in the making. Their old pals the Cuban Boys guest on A-side "Let Them Know", adding their distinctive rapped and sung vocals to a hip-swinging mambo-influenced backing track full to bursting with Cuban rhythms, jaunty guitar licks and barrio horns. Over on the flip, regular collaborator Andy Cooper raps his way through a fiery funk-rock-meets hip-hop bomb that will have hands shooting skywards faster than you can say, "Mine's a Tequila shooter!"

God Walked Down (3:47)
Review: Bristol duo The Allergies team up with award-winning Afrofuturist K.O.G. aka Kweku Of Ghana for a collaboration that's as explosive as it is catchy. 'Koliko' is a potent blend of late 60s African rhythms and upfront hip-hop swagger, with K.O.G's vocals adding a raw energy and shamanistic intensity. His lyrics, delivered in both English and his native tongue, explore themes of identity and cultural appropriation, adding a layer of social commentary to the infectious groove, while on the flip, 'God Walked Down' takes a different approach, its soulful melodies and uplifting harmonies showcasing The Allergies' versatility and their ability to craft music that moves both the body and the soul.

Midnight In Havana
Kinky Afro Cuban
Review: Like all material released on Original Gravity, this tidy two-tracker from percussionist/band-leader Nestor Alvarezn and producer Neil Anderson sounds like it could have been recorded decades ago but is in fact brand new. It first appeared earlier in the year and has now been granted a second pressing, this time on coloured vinyl. A-side 'Midnight in Havana' is a heavyweight Afro-Cuban treat, with roaring horn lines and energetic organ lines leaping above a weighty, low-slung groove piled high with Latin percussion. The pair get cheeky on the flip, re-imagining Happy Mondays' classic 'Kinky Afro' in an easy listening salsa style, complete with bi-lingual lead vocals and sweltering trumpet solos.

Amazones De Guinee - "Samba" (4:53)

Review: Mr Bongo kickstarts a new Afro 45s series with serious intention; all-girl troupe from Guinea Amazones De Guinee take the lead with a live recording from Paris, 1983. Taken from their Au Coeur De Paris album, it's the perfect example of a live recording with the balance of musicianship and crowd participation precision tuned. Flip for the previously rare 1980 recording by Ivory Coast's Moussa Doumbia whose smoky vocals and JB-level shrieks hit hard over a clam-tight Afrofunk rhythm. What a way to start a new series.

Gatjumak (Walrii & RU! remix) (3:59)
Review: A contemporary slice of Yolngu-funk direct from East Arnhem Land, the Andrew Gurruwiwi Band bring a fresh admixture of funk, house and boogie, all brought together by an inimitable Indigenous Australian tradition. A dirt-road-tested party-jam led by the blind, keytar-weilding elder Andrew Gurruwiwi - and delivered in his mother tongue, Yolngu Matha - 'Gatjumak' is a rip-roaring, texturally rich feast for the ears. The previously-unreleased remix comes courtesy of Brisbane producers Walrii and RU! and twists the Yolngu-funk number with a poly-rhythmic, broken-beat shuffle, all whilst retaining the heart and energy of the original.

Kalita has acquired the rights to do so though so we are now treated to two next-level slices of West African disco from Amsterdam's Kofi Ayivor. They have been taken from his 1981 classic and much sought-after album 'Kofi' and have been cut nice and loud for extra impact. Con La Mano En La Biblia (2:50)
Review: Matasuna Records take us on a trip back to late 60s Panama, offering up two supremely rare tracks which, on their original pressings, would be a costly investment if you were lucky enough to find them. The A-side belongs to Camilo Azuquita and his joyous 'Borombon', a track bristling with exuberant brass and striking piano. On the B-side, Panama Brass lay down 'Con La Mano En La Biblia', a lively affair led by organist Cristobal Munoz Jr and featuring some of the best musicians in Panama at the time.

Review: In 2011, Banda Achilifunk & OJO served up Gitano Real, one of the year's most essential albums. It was caned far and wide by funk lovers, in particular Craig Charles on his 6 Music show. Now, two cover versions taken from the essential album have been pressed to limited edition translucent yellow vinyl. First up, 'I Believe in Miracles' is an overwhelming take on the Jackson Sisters classic with plenty of happy Latin vibes and rumba funk rhythms. Flip it over for a more abstract version of McFadden and Whitehead's seminal 'Ain't No Stoping Us Now' which is a soulful disco number packed with sunshine.

Review: Stevie Wonder's 'Pastime Paradise' has thus far been less recognised as an original soul wonderwork, and more so as a sample by American rapper Coolio on the derivative 'Gangster's Paradise'. Though still having been covered by many artists over the years, Major Keys records highlights this enduring 1981 cover of Wonder's 'Paradise' by Latin percussionist Ray Barretto as among their favourites, if not their absolute favourite. Now the label reissue the gem, flaunting its up-to-date, nigh timeless feel; it's the opposite of a miracle that this has never before been released on a 12" single record, despite the fact that it is a favourite on the floors of jazz and soul rooms the world over. It also flips it with Barretto's own 'La Cuna' and 'Mambotango', taken from the same 1981 LP.

Review: For seven years, Matasuna Records has been dedicated to uncovering musical gems from the past. Now, they introduce a thrilling contemporary find: Barcelona-based band Bidaide. Their debut 7" vinyl single features two unreleased tracks, 'Batua' and 'Love Me & Give Up', both of which showcase their eclectic blend of soul, funk, psychedelic rock, reggae-dub, and library music. 'Batua' on the A-side delivers an energetic fusion of funky rhythms, agile guitar dialogues, and vibrant brass overlays. On the B-side, 'Love Me & Give Up' offers a soulful, relaxed vibe with Motown-esque charm. Bidaide's evolution from a duo to a vibrant band culminates in this dynamic release.

Chip's Funk (3:31)
Review: Atlantic Records has allowed Matasuna Records to dig deep into its archives here and unearth a pair of real funky treats from the Black Heat band. The funk and soul outfit were active in the 1970s and although they were hugely tented never really broke out into the mainstream. For the first time now, two of their best tunes from their debut album are included on this official 7inch. 'Wanaoh' has never actually been on vinyl before and is driven by a killer bassline, with big angling riffs over the top and plenty of lush strings. On the flip is the slightly more stripped back 'Chip's Funk,' with its organ chords and rolling rhythm section.

Review: German-Ghanaian group the Polyversal Souls have previously collaborated with a number of bands and solo artists from West Africa, so this hook-up with Northern Ghanaian outfit the Bolga All Stars - a collective made up of leading local kologo and frafra-gospel singers and musicians - should not come as much of a surprise. Separated into two parts for the seven-inch release, the track blends the Polyversal Souls' lolloping, late '60s style Afro-funk grooves - complete with fuzzy, period style production - and sharp horn section with glistening guitars, snaking solos and fine vocals from the Bolga All Stars. Review: Bosq's Bacalao label is back with more of that supreme feel-good gear to bring about sunnier days. The artist frequently spotted on Ubiquity knows exactly how to craft a sumptuous groove with a particular focus on Latin music and Afrobeat, and he's doing that with flair and precision on 'C'est Quoi C'est Quoi'. The track features French poet Pat Kalla on vocals, and it's leaps off the 7" primed for festival deployment. If you want to get the crowd locked in and heads down, the 'Gimme Riddim Dub' on the flip may be more your bag, but either way the musicality springs forth from this perfect nugget of globally-minded funk.

Review: You'd expect a collaboration between Columbia-based fusionist Bosq, Ibibio Sound System's horn section and vocalist Kaleta to be pretty darn good, and 'Song For Ehi' most certainly is. Inspired by a combination of classic Edo-funk, Afro-disco and reggae disco, the A-side original version delivers a near perfect mix of timbales-sporting dub disco grooves, reverb-laden lead vocals, Afro-funk guitar licks, Afrobeat-esque organ licks and punchy horns. The track's inherent dubbiness is further explored on the flipside revision, which adds extra layers of percussion and the kind of breathless dancefloor weight that marks out the greatest dub disco workouts. In a word: essential!

Review: Si Cheeba is a veteran of Manchester's jazz dance and broken beat scene and on this new project he's going in hard on Latin grooves and giving them a serious cut and paste flair. This is the kind of record which should be kept in your back pocket for festival season, but it's got more than enough heat to light up a winter's night too. There's a little of big beat's sass in the madcap collage antics on both sides of this boogaloo-baiting bomb, with 'I Wanna Get High' taking the cake for holding down the groove for maximum satisfaction on the floor.

Following up 'What You Gotta Say - Hey Hey!' released earlier this year, now appears two tutorials for you, on how exactly to handle any forthcoming electric boogaloo, before you blow a fuse... as ever continuing his mission to join the dots between funky and soulful sounds past and present, Cheeba delivers two fresh, impossible-to-source samply instrumental edits straight to the dome - the first a handclapping, big-breaksy dance pedagogy (it's urgent upstarts like you learn), and the B laying down a more seductive medley ("try it...") replete with a djembe solo.

Review: New limited edition 7-inch magic from Cheeba's Latin Bros, a new Latin - dare we say electric - boogaloo project by Si Cheeba, a veteran of the jazz and groove sessions popular in Manchester in the early 90s. The 7" is the first in a series of boogaloo lessons, which are cut-and-paste beats-and-samples tracks inspired by the enduring legacy of Latin soul - channelling its structure, pace and spirit, but lending it a medley-style electronic sample-based core. The A-side is based on many a rawly cut-up shout and sawn-off trumpet sample, while the comparatively muted B-side, 'I Wanna Get High', schools us on the myriad potential of furtive beats and rhythms.

Bringing a wide range of inspirations to their debut record, from traditional Afro-folk and Taaso to Afrobeat and hip-hop, 'Afrikan Hustle' is a timely dedication at once to the zeal of to hustle culture and also to African heritage, combining the low-slung Caribbean moods of dancehall and calypso in the chorus with contemporary Aussie rap in the verses, with many a musing on colonial impetuosity mixed with indefatigable, always-bounce-back hustlers' self-confidence.

Review: Cumbias En Moog's Cumbia De Sal is an exemplary psychedelic cumbia single - from the main pushers of the niche South American genre, Vampisoul - which this time offers a distinct usage of the Moog synth. The Cumbias En Moog project began in Colombia as a wilfully unique vision that combined traditional cumbia rhythms with vintage synthesizers; two of the group's choicest cuts make it to vinyl here, 'Cumbia De Sal' and 'Cumbia Sobre El Mar'. Far more synthy than guitarry (most cumbia falls into the latter camp) the tracks pit an offbeat, goofy rhythm with stark Moogs, resonant leads and happily crude playing, while their haunting choral vocals add a human touch to said robotics.

Containing an unreleased single from his upcoming album 'Seda', this double single is funk so heavy it'll weigh you down. 'Fine Fine' is a slick and fast-paced track of contentment - leave the man alone he said he's fine! - and 'Red Light' is a squeaky clean showcase of what made Damawuzan so popular in Togo with his carefree and charismatic attitude. All you funk lovers out there have got to give this a spin.

Review: Over the last couple of years, Matasuna Records has developed a tried-and-tested formula. It revolves around finding and licensing killer cuts - think funk, Afrobeat, tropical flavours and Latin beats - and then pairing them with a fresh, floor-friendly re-edit. Their latest find is something of an overlooked gem: a gorgeously sunny 1983 number from Ghanaian musician Mawuli Decker that's piled high with infectious, EWE-language vocals, Highlife guitars, spacey Moog sounds and cute electric piano solos. The accompanying Renegades of Jazz re-edit is pleasingly faithful to its source material, deftly showcasing Decker's brilliant music while beefing up the bass, subtly tightening up the drums and layering on some complimentary hand percussion.

Soul Makossa (long version)
Review: Sampled by everyone from J-Lo to Jay-Z, Manu Dibango's 1972 classic is perhaps one of the most influential and heavily referenced afrofunk tracks of all time. Echoing with shades of every genre we know and love today, it still sounds just as timeless, infectious and ultimately agenda-setting today as the first time you heard it. If your collection doesn't sport this original yet, now is most certainly the time.

Review: After the critically acclaimed Avoude (5 stars & 'Top of the World' on Songlines, Bandcamp top pick, Le Monde, BBC Radio, Pop Matters), Sol Power Sound proudly presents a scorching remix EP from West African psychedelic powerhouse Dogo du Togo & the Alagaa Beat Band. Rooted in Togo's deep cultural and Vodun traditions, Dogo's sound is reimagined here by a heavyweight lineup of producers. Captain Planet kicks things off with a percussive African house groove, while Sol Power All-Stars ask, What if Prince joined Dogo in 1983? The result? A synth-laced funk HIIT workout. Detroit icons John Beltran and Blair French bring Afro-Brazilian and deep house flavors, before Glenn Echo closes with a mind-bending 12/8 dub trip.

Review: Tomede Ehue and Tp Orchestre Poly-rythmo are giants of the global afro scene and to have them together on one 12" is a masterstroke. This third offering from Canopy features the title track from a hard to find Afro 7" that was initially only put out via private press in a Benin label in 1980. Little his known about Tomede Ehue but she is an undeniable talent, and in cahoots with Beninois powerhouse TP Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou they are unstoppable. Bosq and Sam Redmore provide remixes to this superb package.

Review: Madrid via Cuba musical gang El Combo Batanga have finally dropped this new double-sider 7". It was teased by the early reals sou the a-side which brings plenty of dance floor filing heat with 'El Que La Rompe La Paga'. It's packed with samba shuffle, expressive horn work and results, and relentless keys work designed to get the ass moving. On the flip is 'Toca La Campana' which is a little less dense but not less rhythmic in the way it sways to and fro with fiery Spanish vocals and funk riffs.

Review: The Ethiopian Brothers transport you to a vibrant fusion world where Ethiopian jazz, Afro drums and funk all collide. Released in 1972, this single showcases the band's mastery of traditional Ethiopian rhythms intertwined with elements of Western funk and soul. 'Ashadwa' exudes infectious energy and is driven by lively brass sections and mesmerizing vocals weaved into the dynamic arrangements next to wah way guitars and steamy sax. It is a real dancefloor heater while a version comes on the flip without the vocals.

Review: Mushi 45 is keeping tight lipped about the story behind their latest release but it's confirmed it's a brand new production and not an obscure afrobeat reissue/edit . The release is PURE fire - a killer chunk of Afro-funk blessed with heavyweight drum breaks, punchy sax solos, celebratory African vocals and super-funky bass. In classic funk style "Ashadwa" is split into two parts; the first boasts chant-along vocals, extended drum breaks and a genuine "party in the studio" vibe, while the second is more instrumental and stripped back with greater use of snaking saxophone solos. In a word: essential.

Review: The first release from the Ethiopian Brothers, 2019's 'Ashadwa', was a brilliant slab of Afro-funk that many erroneously believed to be a long-lost classic. In fact, it was the work of a contemporary producer associated with Jalepeno Records. Regardless, the record sounded authentically old and dusty, as does this equally as inspired sequel. 'Selassie (Part 1)' sets the tone, with the producer and his session musicians serving up a righteous Afro-funk workout rich in Tony Allen influenced drum-breaks, flanged guitars, raw tenor sax lines and killer bass guitar. Even more righteous is the flipside 'Part 2' version that showcases more snaking sax lines and some seriously infectious, chant-like vocals.

Jungle Bird Tree (Louie's Wicked Break mix)
Bar GoGo
Review: Vladimir Sivc aka. Funky Destination has been cutting and chopping up house, funk and jazz since the late noughts, seeing multiple releases on outlets like Timewarp and Cold Busted since then. Sound Exhibitions finally team up with the Croatian crackajack for 'Jungle Bird Tree', which was originally released as an exclusive track on an obscure digital Summer 2023 compilation (seriously, it deserves better, and don't SE know), and here lend it a neat little Wicked Break rework from Louie. On the B-side comes the scruffier number 'Bar GoGo', which is our favourite of the two, not least for its sunkissed axe loops and heartfelt folk vocal sample.
