Super Spicy Recipe Vol 6

Monsieur Van Pratt - "My Love For You" (5:24)
Pato Watson - "Ella Fue" (6:09)
Paul Older - "Turkish Lights" (6:02)
C Da Afro - "Nothing But The Funk" (6:33)
Juan Soto - "All Is Full Of Love" (5:10)
Review: Super Spicy's Super Spicy Recipe series is back with a sixth mouthwatering offering and once again it's a super hot outing of party-ready house and disco sounds. First up is the irresistibly colourful disco charm of Birdee with the freewheeling 'Underground' and its groove-infused piano. Label boss Monsieur Van Pratt then adds his own spin to a rare groove classic with a lung-busting soul vocal and Pato Watson is in edit mode as he tweaks 'Ella Fue' to perfection. Italian don Paul Older brings some funky jazz fusion sounds to his steamy 'Turkish Lights, C. Da Afro keeps it a party with his 'Nothing But The Funk' and Mexican Juan Soto slips into a more deep and loved-up funk-house vibe on 'All Is Full Of Love'.

Can - "Vitamin C" (Blackcash & Theo Thelonious Beats Gillepsie edit) (4:09)
Silver Apples - "Lovefingers" (Blackcash & Theo Thelonious Beats Gillepsie edit) (4:16)
Review: We're really loving the Galaxy Sound Co massive; the label invariably turns up with the heat required to make our heads turn. Their edits aren't just your regular edits, they're reworks of quality soul and funk gems from the creme-de-la-creme of diggers' bags. For instance, the present number nine in the series features Vitamin C's lo-fi jam reworked by Blackish and Theo Thelonious Beats Gillespie, and the result is something extra special - a driving groove to satisfy for than one sort of collector. On the flip, leftfield dance maestro Lovefingers has his "Mr Apples" tune turned into even more of an abstraction by Blackcash and TTBC himself; what you get is a singular slice of wavy psychedelia for the open-minded DJ. TIP!

Bloodfire (aka Daz I Q )Volume VIII (dub)
Review: The Bloodfire series makes a return and it's summer vibes aplenty as Bugz In The Attic alumni Daz I Kue takes on the (original) 2-step boogie stylings of "Good Lovin' Is Good Livin" by Creative Source. The original is packed with such sing-along joy that the Bloodfire original mix doesn't mess with the template too much, merely advertising the Daz I Kue talent for percussive embellishments and beefed up bass. It's the accompanying dub mix where the Daz I Kue production skills come to the fore, extending the intro out for a delightful age before the soul flushed backing swoops through the channels and the track drops into a heavily chopped main section. A real delight of a twelve inch!

How Can I Forget You (3:34)
Review: Adeen Records is back with its The Bird series and this time Cad73 is the one at the buttons. First up he flips the age old classic 'Love and Happiness' into a smooth and seductive sound with lush chords and warming melodies. Flip it over and you will find a rework of 'How Can I Forget You' which becomes a Northern Soul great with big hooks and driving rhythms that will get big reactions in the club. Two different but equally effective and cultured cuts.

Ritmo Latino (5:15)
Review: Stone cold New Jersey funk business; Calender's seminal "Hypertension" has been a waymark in dancefloor developments since '75 and its big strings, high energy and nagging vocals still have total resonance to this day as proved by this rolling, conga fuelled twist from Mexican maestro Hotmood. Flip for more relevance as "Ritmo Latino" (from Calender's '76 album "It's A Monster") gets a cheeky breakbeat facelift from Voodoocuts. Now there's no excuse not to get funky every single day of the year.

Terry Callier - "Ordinary Joe" (4:14)
Jerry Butler - "Ordinary Joe" (3:26)
Review: On the latest edition of their excellent Soul Essentials series, Outta Sight has decided to bring together two versions of 'Ordinary Joe', a seemingly perennial favourite written by the late, great Terry Callier. His celebrated 1972 recording - all bold, sing-along choruses, organ stabs, jangling piano and lolloping grooves - breezes its way across side A, while Jerry Butler's earlier version, laid to tape in 1970, sits on side B. His version is much more expansive and musically detailed than Callier's take, with superb production from Gamble & Huff and some brilliant orchestral arrangements courtesy of Donny Hathaway. Both versions are, or course, incredible.

Sounds Chicago (6:15)
Ti Amo (6:33)
D'Afrique (5:50)
Opera (3:09)
Review: Brazilian talent Rafael Cancian has grown in stature thanks to solid outings on the tasteful likes of Razor-N-Tape and Hot Pot Records. Now with that profile established, he heads out with a new label of his own in the form of About Disco. He inaugurates it with a quartet of edits that he has already been deploying to great effect on various dancefloors around the world. 'Sounds Chicago' does indeed with raw drums and great keys dancing over the beats. 'Ti Amo' has a more funky undercarriage and disco percussion, 'D'Afrique' again brings a funky bass riff to the fore with some psyched-out sounds for company and 'Opera' shuts down with some late-night and soul-drenched synths over intimate and stripped back house drums.

Review: Pressed from rarer-than-hens-teeth acetate, these unreleased versions of Candido's genre-setting "Thousand Finger Man" and "Dancin' & Prancin'" remove the Salsoul disco gloss and present a much warmer, more authentic lo-fi vibe. Untouched in every other way, both cuts act as unique portals to a time when dancefloor science was still a mysterious alchemy... And proceed to show how forward-thinking Candido was. The Carver Senior Song (Class Of '83) (6:06)
Review: The Carver Area High School Seniors' 'Get Live '83 (The Senior Rap)' is a stone cold party hip hop classic. It has been out of print for some four decades, however, and so has become a rather hard to find and expensive record. Thankfully, Soul Jazz Records have got the rights to this full reissue which was first pressed in 1982 on the private press label Challenger. The cut featured as the standout on Soul Jazz Records' recent 'Yo! Boombox' collection and now standalone as a seven minute stunner. It's an old school party disco delight with great rap and killer beats, all presented with the original artwork.

Review: Is there any label out there that does as much leg work as Athens of the North. The Edinburgh outlet doesn't just reissue the obvious stuff, but goes on mad quests to track down almost impossible to find OG soul, funk and disco tunes for the benefit of us all. This latest 7" is another irresistible one from Antonio Castro. Born in Spanish Harlem to Puerto Rican immigrants, Castro later changed his name to covid any association with Fidel and was inspired by everyone from Louis to Frank. This one came in around 1970 and is a heart rending two tracker with warming vocals and gentle rhythms.

Review: Backatcha are rolling out the jams right now and Chain Reaction's 'Hogtied' is the latest. It comes with another cut which is also taken from the outfit's debut album which was recorded in September 1975 in London. The group consists of Bruce Ruffin, Bobby Davis and Dave Collins, all former Techniques singers who have also worked with several other groups. Stanley Pemberton of Congress Productions produced the A-side and it's as silky and soft as soul comes with 'Quicksand' on the flip slowing things down to a romantic crawl.

Review: Fresh from the Harlem hotpot, 1980: Harold Sargent's Chain Reaction teamed up with Sound Of New York's founder and producer Peter Brown for a star-lit, horn-baked, organ-licked disco creation that still funks hard 36 years down the line. With its maximal approach, disco bubbles and emphatic gutsy vocals, it could be argued that this funk even harder today due to it ticking every possible disco, boogie and funk box possible.

Review: **Repress Alert! Emotional Rescue's killer Bob Chance 7" makes a welcome return sporting some new blue artwork ** With two massive reissues from Suns of Arqa and Jaki Whitren under their belts, the fledging label Emotional Rescue have come up with the goods once again, with this remastered reissue of incredibly rare 70s psyche-funk from Bob Chance. Two versions are included: the original 7" version, driven along by a razor-sharp guitar riff and sweetly lamenting lyrics, topped off with weird cosmic synths and galloping rhythm. However, the real gem is the edit entitled "Wild It's Broken" which sharpens the focus of the guitar and adds some serious kick to the drums to create a beefy counterpart to the new age original.

Now, Common Ground International brings otters two of them on this reissued 7". For this newest 7" they sign up vibraphonist Pavel Chiznik who brings with him plenty of flair on top of the well versed rhythm section. Christian Harmonizers - "Troubles Of The World" (3:02)
Gospel Travelers - "Jesus Is Watching You" (3:15)
Review: For those without an intimate knowledge of the private-press-dominated gospel scene of the 1960s, '70s and '80s, Greg Belson's forthcoming Divine Funk compilation of rare gospel-soul and gospel-funk offers a brilliant introduction to the sound - as does this sampler "45", one of a number being released ahead of the full collection. Christian Harmonizers' 'Troubles of the World', which sits on the A-side, is so rare and obscure that it has no Discogs entry. While that's no guarantee of quality, the track genuinely is sensational, sounding a lot like James Brown making gospel-funk rather than the sexually charged sweatiness he was known for. Turn to the B for another exceedingly hard-to-find treat: Gospel Travelers' more laidback, sweet, soulful and bluesy 'Jesus is Watching You'.

Never Did I Stop Loving You (2:32)
Review: Two powerful soul sessions from Alice Clark's eponymous debut 1972 album. "Don't You Care" is a hard-hitting soul standard (that became very popular in acid jazz scene in the early 90s) where Alice opens her heart for all to see while her incredible band ebb and flow with Clark's emotions. "Never Did I Stop Loving You", meanwhile, languishes in sentiment at a slightly lower tempo that allows her to really dig deep for those low notes. The real fun happens as we reach momentum towards the end and every band member brings out their A-game and bounces off each other - backing up Alice every step of the way. You will care about this.

Review: A 12-strong gang of classically trained Italian Afrobeat disciples, Classica Orchestra Afrobeat return to their 2011 debut album Shrine On You. A celebration of Fela Kuti's legacy, complete with Fela's son Seun, it's a rich, heavily textured take on the raw funk sound Fela helped shape in the 70s. "Zombie" oozes instant charm thanks to the sing-along vocal refrain and tight groove. "Water No Get Enemy" showcases the troupe's orchestrated skills with even more detail; firing with the instantly distinctive riff of the original, it manages to celebrate the rawness of the original while adding a whole host of textures and ideas. Complete with a special download of the original album, this is a really special release.

Review: 'Deixa Eu Dizer' is a timeless Brazilian classic that was famously sampled by Marcelo D2 on his iconic hip-hop track 'Desafabo' and maybe just as notary, it was also the debut release on Mr Bongo's now much loved Brazil 45's imprint. It originally featured on Cizinha's stunning album of the same name and until Mr Bongo stepped in it had never been available on a 7". Review: Another mighty fine reissue here from the masters of just that in the Original Gravity label. It features distorted organ loveliness here that continues with their practice of putting out new music in the style of old soul 7"s. On this split-flip 45, two of the most eminent soul vocalists out today share a side each. St. Louis singer Raye Cole helms the A-side, with her energetic number 'You Gotta Set Me Free' stomping on forward with a shaker-clapping, horn-heavy blues swing. Rachel Maxann - perhaps another alias similar to Nestor Alvarez - brings up the B on a finger-clicking alternate take on 'You Gotta Set Me Free'.

Thankfully, the label reissuing this self-titled single managed to get in touch with an original member who explained that the band is three brothers from Mexico City. It was a remix of their 'Talking All That Jazz' by Dimitri From Paris that resurrected interest in the group in 1998 and now this 7" continues to shine a light on the often forgotten group. The inaugural release on Friendly Recordings fittingly comes from a local talent, promising newcomer Claude Cooper. What's on offer very much taps into Bristol's post-punk history, with excellent A-side 'Tangerine Dreams' sounding like the sax-wielding mutant offspring of Rip, Rig & Panic and Maximum Joy - all bold, rubbery double bass, frenetic breakbeats and delay-laden horn solos. B-side 'Two Mile Hill', which was named in honour of a road in Bristol near Cooper's house, offers an extra-percussive and moodier variation on a similar theme. In a word: terrific!

On side A you'll find Cut Chemist fave 'Hey Joyce', a rare 1967 single from soul man Lou Courtney. Review: Those who missed out on the third volume of Jazzy Sport's Japanese CD only compilation Pound For Pound can take solace in this special 7" that draws some fresh produce from the release. Strictly for the nimble fingered selectors only! Fans of the label will need no introduction to the Cro Magnon trio of Shigekazu Otake, Tsuyoshi Kosuga and Takumi Kaneko and "QP Funk" finds them collaborating with hip hop DJ and producer DJ JIN on a fantastic funk fusion. Breaks fanatics will be all over the flip side vinyl only version "QP Funk (drums)" which lows the organs and lets Shigekazu Otake's drumming take centre stage.

Green Smoke (4:55)
Thunder Perfect (5:15)
Review: The Cromagnon Band's debut 7" back in 2019 was a sell-out and critically acclaimed success. They make a welcome return here with another natural fusion of all of the tastes and styles of the individual band members. They have said before they make music in a reverse engineering fashion after years honing their skills producing beats on MPCs before moving to real instruments. They've already featured on compilations from Andy Votel and Doug Shipton's Finder Keepers label and these two nuggets are likely to become crate-digging delights of the future. 'Green Smoke' is a tumble of funky drums and jazzy keys that never let up and 'Thunder Perfect' is a deeper, more spacious approach to funk.

Never Too Much (4:25)
Never Too Much (instrumental) (4:18)
Review: Athens Of The North is unveiling a whole wealth of new 7"s this month and as usual, each and every one is an essential purchase. This one in particular will resonate with a wide audience thanks to the ubiquity of the source material - Luther Vandross's 'Never Too Much.' There have been many versions over the years but this reggae take from Derrick Cross is special indeed, and an OG will costs basically too much for any sane person. Now a fully legit repress makes it accessible to all once more, and hurrah for that.

Review: "Chris Clubber", by Cucumber, is a mega-groovy, French, Austin Powers-esque, instrumental. This is ultra funky and sure to set the party off right. This Cosmic Groove release is limited to 800 numbered copies.

Fatback Brother Bill Curtis - "Dance Girl" (2:50)
Johnny King & Fatback Band - "Keep On Brother Keep On" (2:05)
Review: Bill Curtis' Fatback Band is known around the world for its soul and disco hits but their roots actually lay in funk. They were one of the most impressive outfits around in that particular genre and so they have, for those who are willing to dig deep enough, plenty of rare funk gems to call upon from their earliest days. Here we get a couple of them with 'Dance Girl' - the last tune they released in 1974 before signing to Event/Spring. It was a real classic at block parties back in the day and on the flip is a tune that will cost you over L1000 if you can find an original, namely 'Keep On Brother Keep On' - the group's second single on Curtis BC Projects II label.
