Review: New funk and soul grooves from Adesha and Vincent Kwok, the Italian vocalist and production duo responsible for a rain-made string of releases on Sleepers Records. 'Life's Too Short' and 'Blame Game' are infectious, talkboxing punchers; the former hears a muted guitar solo in its sultry breakdown, as if to say "don't be afraid of anything that stands in your way", while 'Blame Game' continues to deal with the tumult of difficult relationships, aiming to mood-set your next party with frank DX7 chords and 909s. This split single comes to a limited pink vinyl 7" and picture cover, and is limited to just 150 copies.

Review: 2 Rare West Indian funk tunes, Side A is a version of Gwen McCrae's soul and funk classic "90% Of Me Is You" from Trinidad's finest steelpan band Amral's Trinidad Cavaliers, this tune is seriously rare, originally only pressed in small quantities and sold around the Caribbean. On the flip is a wicked instrumental funk cut by Veriable Reluctance who are actually the Mohawks in disguise !!!

Review: Anyone who has heard DJ Marky do one of his "non D&B" sets will know that his love of funk, soul, disco and boogie is real, while there's far more classic Brazilian music in his record collection than some may expect. It makes sense then that he's been asked to provide the follow-up to DJ Format's Brazil 45s box set and pick some vintage carnival-ready gems of his own from Mr Bongo's bulging vaults. There are naturally some stone-cold classics present - see Jorge Ben's floor-slayer 'Take it Easy My Brother Charles' and the boogie-era smoothness of Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetta's 'Eva' - but also plenty of lesser-known samba and MPB gems stretched across the five "45s".

Review: Indeed, it is the funk. Djar One reassures of such a statement with 'It's The Funk', their latest two-take hip-hop 7" featuring rapper Venomous2000 and a remix from the legendary DJ Tron. Undeniably slick production shops and a wickedly retro West Coast sound hears the record trace a nice throughline from gangsta rap to jazzy boom-bap, with the A-side erring more on the weightier side and the B leaning more into laid-back, struttier moods.

Review: Modern hip-hop production titan Djar One returns with a fresh 7", 'It's The Funk', with fellow stalwarts Venomous2000 and DJ Tron both coming through for neat verses and flippages respectively. While Djar's A-side is nicely gritty, getting at that West Coast, gangster-funk-whistly, top-dropped steeze with ease, DJ Tron's version provides a completely alternate jazzhop take, stripping back the track to its bare bones and preferring to let the mood flow rather than stomp.

Review: For their latest dive into the depths of funk history, Athens of the North travels back to 1978 and the debut of John Hawes and Velma Bunch's obscure Hard Drivers project. The record initially appeared on Hawes' own short-lived imprint, and his since become a sought after 7" amongst serious collectors. "Since I Was A Little Girl" is a disco-era funk gem, with guest singer Vivian Lee providing a brilliantly confident vocal to compliment Hawes and Bunch's driving, horn-heavy backing track. On the flip you'll find original B-side "Straight Talk", a touching torch song full of harmony backing vocals, impassioned builds, and lyrics capable of melting even the stoniest of hearts.

Review: Mishell Ivon and Vincent Kwok are back and combining their skills once more with this brilliant bouncy new funk outing on The Sleepers. The first tune on this pocket-rocket of a 7" is 'High', a funky weapon that is high on life and built around well-syncopated drums and a percussive bassline. The icing on the cake is Mishell's vocals which weave in out of the synth stabs and lush keys, all of which are well arranged. Flip it over and you'll get lost in the funk once more with 'In The Dust' with its masterfully rhythmic bassline and more of those buttery Mishell vocals.

Review: Volume 6 of the SCM Flip Sessions is from the one and only J Rocc. It has been put together as a celebration of the end of the tenure of former President Trump, or "the most trash president in the history of the United States," as the label puts it. Across just two tunes, SCM brings you 14 flips of possibly the most sampled song in hip hop. They are Althea out together by the inimitable J Rocc with the hope being that this is a document of protest that will stand the test of time. One pressing only, 500 copies in all, do not sleep.

First up on side A is "Afro Funky Now", a loose-limbed, bass-heavy Afro-funk workout rich in addictive organ stabs, delay-laden saxophone solos, Fela Kuti-esque horn blasts, beefy bass guitar and infectious drum breaks. Over on side B, "Booker" is a driving force of nature: a saxophone, trumpet and harmonica laden romp through swamp funk territory with more energetic instrumental flourishes than you can shake a stick at. A1 is Mikeandtess with a nice edit titled 'Preacher Man' that's seriously Dusty and slo-mo as you like it, while Oldchap's 'Big At The Jazz Club' chugs along just as slowly with its locomotive and jazzy groove with rap vocals. Over on the second disc, Bully Boy gets the late night boogie-down vibes in effect on 'Central Train' followed by Vibes4yoursoul with the sunny and low slung goodness of 'Delicious'.

Review: Two sides of unreleased rare disco funk jams from California salvaged from cassette tapes (yes - cassette tapes!) and dusted off by the tireless chaps behind the People's Potential label. This double artist dinked 45 kicks off with Pierre's "Cherry Snow", with a likeable Dam Funk-ish vibe, some cool hooks and electronic drums assisted by main male vocal. On the flipside, a female vocal jam from Oakland resident Veronica is heavy on the bass and 80s keyboard synths...we like.

Review: The ever on point Japanese label At Home Sound is back with another blistering brace of brilliant edits. DJ Kawasaki steps out first with a special 45 edit version of a Soul Boogie mix by the late great Phil Asher, who himself was reworking the Root Soul original 'Spirit of Love.' It's the sort of lush and feel good disco tune that comes laden with a ton of great synths and guitar riffs as well as the all important vocal. The ever green Ryuhei The Man then turns in a bossa tinged, Latin flecked edit of a Mano Ariba mix of the same tune that is packed with sunshine.

Review: Edits label Resense is back with another of its double drops and once again the arrival of another pair of DJ Oonops-selected cuts has got us all hot and in a spin. Slick Walk gets us going with the cuddly chairs and festive jazz keys of 'Young Jazzy' which slowly awaken you and get you grooving. Flip it over and Voodoocuts takes over with 'One Million Clubs', a bristling blend of DIY perc, 50 Cent vocal refrains and a noodling funk bassline that you have to hear to believe. The whole thing is brilliantly subversive and counts as another real winner for this label.

Review: FF45 continue in their mission to fuse and mash only the hottest classics together. This time they welcome two Berliners, Soul Brigada and Voodoocuts, to the fore for a hybridized chimera mixing the fabled verses of Ludacris with Aretha Franklin on the B, and an apparently completely original cut on the A (although it sounds very 'classic' - if it is sampled, then it's a rarity for sure!). Don't sleep on this 7"...

Review: "It's Cool"... Possibly the finest pairings of words in the English language, they can be used to describe anything from the weather to ones behaviour on a Saturday night. Here we find it playing the title and describing Suonho's classic JB-style funk groove. With tight horns and relaxed, big-swing breakbeats, it's a sure fire butt wiggler. Elsewhere Voodoocuts soaks himself in a Champs flavoured "Tequila" spirit. With a tightly plucked guitar riff and major hand-clap action if this doesn't cause a merry Mexican stand off on the dancefloor you're playing in the wrong venue.

Review: The Fania label dives into Latin and Brazilian funk and jazz here on a special one-sided 7" that offers up Bobby Valentin's dancefloor classic 'Use It Before You Lose It.' This low-key cult classic has become hard to find at an affordable price and is a real favourite with those who know. It is three superb sweet minutes of busy and percussive funk rawness with shuffling samba undertones. The guttural vocals are impossible to genre and the jazzy keys are the icing on a fruity cake.

Review: Latin reissue specialists Raroraro (AKA Rare Latin) return to action with another double dose of devilishly hard to find goodness. On the A-side you'll find Bobby Valentin's "Use It Before You Lose It", a seminal boogaloo cut first featured on the artist's 1968 album Let's Turn On. Full of his impassioned vocals, fuzzy horns and authentic, Tito Puente-influenced rhythms, the song has lost none of its power or panache in the 48 years that have passed since it was recorded. Arguably even better is Mongo Santamaria's flipside cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" - a brilliant interpretation from 1970 that sounds like an Afro-Cuban jazz take on Spanky Wilson's infamous soul re-make.

Review: Two sides of 50s exotica as this third release on Jazzman's Popcorn reissue label showcases the wider reaches of the beguiling Belgian popcorn sound. "On A Tropical Island" is a seductive number, with singer Anna Valentino sounding very much the alluring siren as she recounts a passionate love affair on a faraway island. On the flip bandleader and croon-cat Ray McKinley's 1949 rendition of the song "Similau" - which only ever came out on a 78rpm previously - appears. Only 500 pressed so don't sleep!

Review: Detroit rapper Valid's 'I'm Blessed', a bona-fide party-starter produced by DJ Dez Andres, was largely missed by most funk and hip-hop DJs when it first appeared on his limited-edition Mihaljo album back in 2019. Funk Night Records have decided it's time that the track found a bigger audience though and have pressed it onto a must-have '45'. The track itself is a bustling chunk of flute-sporting, funk-fuelled hip-hop that reminded us a little of the similarly-minded fare regularly served up by Bristol duo the Allergies. Over on the flip you'll find something deeper and more laidback: the slow and low sweetness of 'Bottled', featuring guest vocals from Elzhi and Jessica Care Moore.

Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing Brazil 45s series, Mr Bongo has decided to change tack. The two tracks showcased here are from the golden age of Brazilian boogie. On the A-side you'll find Marcos Valle's "A Paraiba Nao E Chicago", a largely overlooked cut from his 1981 full-length Vontade De Rever Voce. While not as instantly as infectious as some of his better-known singles, it's still superb; a breezy, blue-eyed soul cut full of rising horns and sweet Portuguese vocals. On the B-side, you'll find Don Beto's 1978 disco-funk jam "Nao Quero Mais", a superb track that was seemingly inspired by the Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running".

Review: Brazilian songwriter Marcos Valle is a celebrated artist across the genres, from bossa nova and samba to rock fusion, soul and jazz. After reaching dizzying heights with his pop compositions through the 60s and 70s, he was having fun with synths and boogie cuts in the 80s, which is around the time he crafted the workout-friendly tracks 'Esterlar' and 'Bicicleta'. The latter now gets pressed up on 7" backed with the equally catchy 'Beta Menina', a curio of Latin American music with a cover image worth the price of entry alone.

Review: Two premium Latin funk documents on one limited 45, Mr Bongo deliver once again: Marcos Valle needs no introduction to Brazilian music enthusiasts. "Mentira" is a self-cover as Valle takes his 69 classic "Mentira Carioca" and develops the dynamic with a vocal style that's highly reminiscent of Donovan. Review: And so begins a new series from Laura Vane where she explains what she can and can't move. After mountains comes lorries (with a killer buildings b-side) and after that she's going to release a picture disc explaining how she can't move those massive barrels of beer pubs use. Not really. In fact she can move a whole dancefloor with her stirring soulful tones. If you're into Alice Russell (or any Tru Thoughts output for that matter) then this double funk-up will move your jacksey from here to next week. "110%" on the B is equally as wiggle worthy.

Review: The Vapor Caves hail from Austin and now land on Star Creature offshoot, Tug Boat Editions, with some deliciously sugary and sweet sounds. This is a superb follow-up of their cover version of the Rah Band's 1983's electrofunk classic 'Message From The Stars'. This time out they add their own signature sounds to a remake of a rare Detroit Boogie Grail 'Knock U Out which is huge on the West Coast funk scene. It's a real hip-swinging ass-shaker that will be as hard to find as the original in no time. On the flip, you'll find an equally effective instrumental that cannot be ignored.

Review: Togolese Afro-funk band Vaudou Game has been responsible for some of the most essential music on Hot Casa Music, so the arrival of a new single from them following an extended absence of three years is positive news indeed. A-side 'Bella' is little less than superb: a sparkling slab of Afro-soul in which spacey Moog lines and the band's own distinctive vocals ride a gloriously sunny, percussion-rich groove. They revert to their trademark up-tempo Togolese Afro-funk style on B-side 'Be My Wife', which adds Highlife style guitar motifs and more spacey synth sounds to a stomping, club-ready rhythm. Sun-soaked brilliance: don't sleep!

Review: Vaudou Game returns with a funky Afro Cumbia workout that marks the first single from their fifth album. The French Afro-funk band expands its influence here by blending high-life guitars with Cumbia rhythms and crossing into Afro-Latin sounds, especially elements of Colombian music. 'Raler' features the captivating vocals of Spanish-English singer Clara Serra Lopez and is a mix of fresh funk and traditional rhythms while 'Koliko' pays tribute to West African street food, particularly sweet donuts found in Lome and Cotonou. Review: The latest 2021 Record Store Day drop includes a swathe of classic disco, soul and funk records - releases that should be in any DJ's armoury. Vaughan Mason & Crew's 'Bounce Rock Skate Roll', arguably the most famous roller-disco/roller-boogie jam of all time, is not particularly obscure, but it is a must-have. Popular with disco DJs for its squelchy synth bassline, chant-along vocals and sparkling instrumentation, the track has also long been a favourite of block party hip-hop DJs, who love doubling up its metronomic boogie breaks. This seven-inch pressing includes the original version ('Part 1', on the A-side), and the longer 'Part 2' mix that includes the extended, groove-focused instrumental sections that hip-hop jocks love to double-up. If you don't already own a copy, grab one of these.

Review: Featuring sister funk paired with a beautiful ballad, this release is a true gem for aficionados of 1960s indie soul music. It comes from The Velvet Vettes via Tramp and is a limited pressing so don't sleep. A-side cut 'Give Me A Little Bit Of Time' is a lively one with plenty of Northern soul energy as well as lung busting vocals and great backing harmonies full of soul. Flip it over and you will find the much more slow and sentimental sounds of 'I'd Like To Know' which is a real heart melting crooner.

Review: Two Velvet Hammer heaters finally get reissued officially here for the first time since 1977, a mere 45 years since their original release, this time on limited edition red vinyl. 'Party Hardy' is a gorgeous disco groover and an essential slice of Chicago history via Soozi Records, whilst the flip, 'Happy', is the ultimate feel-good modern soul classic and about as anthemic as they get. The appeal of this record knows no limits whether you've heard it once or one hundred times. With mint originals being virtually impossible to get your hands on and second-hand copies that do come up clocking in at L250+, this is a no brainer.

Venice Beach's 'F' is certainly a party-starter, to put it mildly. Vocals straight from the backing chorus of a Tom Tom Club banger, undercarriage destined for an Ibiza terrace if they ever open again, it makes keeping still more than difficult. Flip it to find 'FF' from Jay Airlines, an altogether dustier and more stoned affair, robbing samples from Lou Reed's 'Walk On The Wild Side' and adding punchy drums to introduce some lazy dancefloor potential.

Review: The debut release from the freshly-minted Discodelic label offers up two exceedingly rare - and rather fine - "funky Latin" cover versions from the glory years of hallucinatory funk and soul. Side A sports Via Libre's flash-fried samba-funk cover of Marcos Valle's "Chi Chi Mentira", a heady re-imagination rich in Hammond organ stabs, undulating Latin percussion, groovy bass and a percussive middle section just tailor-made for DJs who like doubling up breaks. Over on the fiip you'll find something even heavier: Grupo Amigos' celebratory, organ-heavy funk-rock take on Trio Ternura's "La Gir Del Diablo", a song that was later famously turned into an international hit by Astrud Gilberto as "Black Magic (A Gira)".

Review: The well-loved compilation series Too Slow To Disco is back with another excellent double 7" package on its How Do You Are? label. Long time label associate Vibes4YourSoul is on the buttons and brings some lush and sunny Brazilian grooves. 'Brilhante' kicks off with a hip swinging, gentle funk groove, 'Pra Voce' has gorgeous spoken word Portuguese vocals over the top of tin pot percussion and swaying drums and 'Confusao' ups the samba element with acoustic strings and brit whistles. 'Joia Da Bahia' closes down with a fat bottomed and funky deep house styled sound with lush instrumentation from Latin America.

Review: While most of us will (sadly) not be going anywhere this holiday season, we can still get a musical taster of what it would be like Chilling at Christmas in the St Petersburg studio of modern funk apostles the Vicious Seeds. Their festive offering is a drowsy, deep, slow and laidback affair - the kind of jazzy instrumental soul and funk that would probably go well with a few mince pies and a needlessly large glass of port. A-side 'Meeting at Flea Market' is particularly lovely, with trombone and trumpet-heavy riffs and leisurely jazz guitar solos making themselves comfortable atop crunchy, deep (filled) funk drums. 'Shades of Pale', meanwhile, is even deeper, warmer and more bass-heavy, with some of the laziest and jazziest electric guitar solos we've ever heard. Delicious!

Review: Funk Night Records goes global again here with a new double-sider from Russia's The Vicious Seeds. They offer up two gems with different vibes on this 7". The first is 'Cruel Fist ', a perfect bit of busy and dense instrumental funk for some steamy dance floor business. On the flip is 'Cold Pressed Venom' which is a more slow-moving and psyched-out sound for late night hours. This is often the approach this outfit takes on this label and like all previous times, it works a treat once more here.

Review: Russian outfit The Vicious Seeds are back on their regular home label of Funk Night with yet another of their delightful little 7"s. As always they use each side to offer up slightly different vibes for different settings. First up is the deep-cut instrumental funk of 'Ace Of Haze' with its wah-wah guitars and psyched-out stoner vibes all seducing you into a meditative state of mind. 'Nature Identical Pleasure' then slows it down further with more libidinous vibes, prominent melodies snaking their bay through the dusty drums and grooves that move your soul.

Review: As part of the label's 15th birthday celebrations, the Tramp Records crew has decided to serve up some seriously heavy deep funk. Given that the imprint first found fame championing similarly weight, B-Boy-friendly funk jams, it's rather fitting. The two showcased tracks come courtesy of St Petersburg band the Vicious Seeds, who have slowly been picking up plaudits since making their vinyl debut in 2016. A-side "Illegal Delivery" is something of a dancefloor beast, with razor-sharp guitars riding sweaty, all-action funk drums and a booming, metronomic bassline. "Happy Lobster", on the other hand, is a little more relaxed but no less potent, with the Russian combo wrapping jazzy guitar motifs around a bustling groove.

Review: Spasibo Records present a fresh 7" by the Vicious Seeds, hailing from St. Petersburg. With vibraphonist Pavel Chizhik taking centre stage (Chizhik isn't usually a member of the band), 'Village Hassle' makes for a cleverly collaborative rare groove and instrumental reggae-soul release. The titular A-side flaunts Chizhik's vibraphone via the mix alone, fleshing out its low-end elements against a driven instrumental backbeat; 'Monthly Rainfall', meanwhile, goes for all-out slow-jammed soul by way of cross-sticked snares and offbeat chord plucks run through short-release springs.

Review: A serious double-up adventure from Mousetrap right here... First up is a rarity from 60s LA Latin funk firebrands The Village Callers. Only spotted on their 1968 Live album, the Ray Charles cover has been remastered and presented with subtlety. Flip for some UK fuzz funk fusionists Pneumania. "I Can See Your Face" buzzes with all manner of influences from the heady, languishing prog twists we're submersed in a harder rockier groove that shows the tell-tale signs which eventually paved the way for revered punk act UK Decay. A highly interesting and broad release.

Review: 'Funky Broadway' by The Villagers appeared on the well-received Movements Vol.12 compilation album and was a clear standout amongst standouts. As a response to that it now makes its long-awaited debut release on standalone vinyl. It's a soul-stirring gem that brings classic sounds and heart-melting grooves. On the B-side comes the red hot garage-rock gem 'You're My Baby (Don't You Forget It)' which is originally from 1966, and which coincided with Dyke & The Blazers' original recording of 'Funky Broadway' in the same year. Neat.
