Roots/Lovers Rock
Aisha - "Guide & Protect" (3:45)
Mad Professor - "Aztec Warrior" (3:45)
Review: Is there a more consistent partnership in UK lovers rock than Pamela 'Aisha' Ross and Neil 'Mad Professor' Fraser? The pair has been working together consistently since 1986 and continue to periodically deliver killer cuts. 'Guide & Protect', which was first featured on the CD (but not vinyl) edition of Ross's 1987 album High Priestess, is one of their best - a sweet, life-affirming affair in which Ross sings sweetly and emotionally atop a typically synth-heavy, dub-flecked lovers rock 'riddim' by the effervescent Fraser. On this 7" edition, an edited version of the 1987 original comes backed by 'Aztec Warrior', a deliciously dubbed-out Mad Professor take on the same riddim featuring echoing flute and brass snippets.

Review: Just three months after its predecessor was released, the second and final part of Joe Armon-Jones' epic All The Quiet album series lands in stores. Entirely written, produced and mixed by the man himself - with a few friends and high-profile guests popping up to add instruments or take to the mic - the set offers atmospheric, immersive and perfectly-pitched musical fusions rooted in his various sonic influences (think jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop and dub). Highlights are plentiful, from the deep and dreamy jazz-soul shuffle of 'Another Place' (featuring significant contributions from vocalists Greentea Peng and Wu-Lu), to the warming, dubbed-out soul of top-tier Yazmin Lacey collaboration 'One Way Traffic'.

Review: After 15 years of live space-rock improvisations and jam sessions around Europe, Bambi Davidson finally got round to delivering their second LP last month. Warmly received by old fans and new, here we find the title track repurposed as an extensive 13 minute exercise in spatial expressionism. Dreamy, deep and full of endless twists and turns, this is the epitome of modern cosmicity. Claremont never cease to surge forward.

Salmon Spungcake (Conrad McDonnell I Think I've Got Gout mix) (7:21)
Review: "Salmon Spungcake" was one of the last things Claremont 56 super-group Bison recorded before the sad passing of two of its' founder members, Holger Czukay and Ursula Kloss in the summer of 2017. Two years on from its initial release, Bison members Ben Smith and Paul 'Mudd' Murphy (also label boss) have decided to get it remixed, with original producer Conrad McDonnell (he of Idjut Boys fame) providing two suitably heavy dub disco interpretations, making this the band's first release since the passing of Czukay and Kloss. Check first the spacey A-side hypnotism of the "Zip It Shrimpy Mix", where melancholic chords and spaced-out vocal snippets wrap around a particularly percussive dub disco groove. Arguably even better is the stripped-back, bass-heavy and reverb-rich "I Think I've Got Gout Mix", which sounds like it was tailor-made to manipulate mangled minds at four in the morning.

Review: The long-running and influential US house label Moods & Grooves welcomes BitterSuite aka Jon Gray for a new EP that finds him distilling plenty of influences into his Compulsive Response EP, which is perfect for mind, body and soul. The title cut is a light and skipping house sound infused with soul-drenched synth warmth, 'Flash Flood' has a more far-sighted sense of cosmic futurism to it and 'Turbulence In The Valley' slows things right down to a delightfully airy and late-night vibe with languid drums and swirling pads. Shutting down a sophisticated EP is the dusty deep house of 'Compulsive Response' with yet more irresistibly emotive synths and wispy melodies.

Review: Landing with a curbstomp the year before their debut full-length Matando Gueros, 1992's iMachetazos! served as only the second 7" EP (of what would become a lengthy discography) from drug cartel death metal outfit Brujeria. While performing with their faces covered and under gangster pseudonyms, anyone within the scene knows the collective alumni boasts (or has at one point) Fear Factory's Dino Cazares and drummer Raymond Herrera, as well as Billy Gould (Faith No More), Nicholas Barker (Cradle Of Filth Dimmu Borgir) and Jeff Walker (Carcass). Lyrically touching on tops of Satanism, torture, gang violence and drug dealing, all united through Mexican imagery and gangster aesthetic; when coupled with the band's extreme form of death metal imbued grindcore, the resulting menace is akin to waking up in a mosh pit during Sicario.

Review: This second set of remixes from Paris-based eight-piece Cotonete's "Super-Vilains" album is another heavyweight selection with Alex Attias, DJ Deep and Romain Poncet and Aleq Notal all coming correct. For his part, Attias keeps the jazz-tinged Latin vibes front and centre with a sunny, sweaty jam laced with house goodness. DJ Deep & Romain Poncet dub things out for those more subtle moments in the night, when a slick rolling groove is enough to hypnotise a crowd, and then it's pure bumping and jazzy deep house from Aleq Notal. Elements of 90s deepness, lounge vibes and funk all colour in the airwaves as you bask in the goodness of his work.

Review: Italian producer D-Leria and Argentine artist Translate hop by the the AMTK+ series for its fifth volume, inning four sharp tunes flaunting respective precision and range. 'Filterbank' brings relentless low-end pressure and gritty, bunker breaching pounds, while 'Let It Be' veers into more unexpected territory, looping chopped vocals round a tight coil of laryngeal copper. Review: For their latest trick, Moods & Grooves has decided to introduce the world to a DJ/producer who has long been operating on the Detroit underground, Marvin Panther AKA Eternal Student. His debut 12" is a slick, deep and seductive affair featuring two original productions: the deep, starry and spacey broken house dreaminess of 'Transpose Deep' and title track 'Hear Me Through', a retro-futurist deep house number smothered in jazzy guitar motifs, lilting synthesizer lead lines and tactile electronic bass. That track is remixed twice on the A-side: first by Xander Dominique, who adds a little Motor City techno shimmer, and Deepset. The latter's take is deep, driving and sci-fi-fired whilst still retaining the hazy warmth of Panther's original mix.

You might well get nostalgic for that initial wave of Bloc Party, Interpol et al when the opening arpeggios of 'Only A Dream' pull you in. Of course the cues go back further to New Order et al, but it hardly matters, HighSchool have got their sound locked down and it's pop-informed where it counts, tight-as-you-like and packed full of emotional sentiment to land this tune squarely in your heart. Review: With Heilun, Hyldipi makes a stunning debut on ambient powerhouse Past Inside The Present by presenting seven meditative compositions shaped by his native Iceland's raw, introspective beauty. Crafted entirely with guitar and minimal hardware, each track feels like a gentle conversation with nature, ephemeral and soul-soothing. From the delicate strums of 'Opnun' to the deep serenity of 'Hvild,' the album flows like glacial melt, patient and healing. 'Fadmur' blooms with aching emotion, while 'Kyrrd' closes the journey in subaquatic calm. This is ambient music for deep listening-an improvised, transcendental escape into stillness, where the ego dissolves and all that remains is presence and peace.

Review: Irish-born, Manchester-based artist Kerrie returns to James Ruskin's Blueprint label with her third outing for the label, continuing her evolution through weighty, precision-built techno. A fixture of the UK scene and now a resident at Berlin's Tresor, Kerrie draws on her background in record store culture and over a decade of hardware experimentation to forge tracks that are both rigorous and emotionally charged. 'Act Of Resistance' pairs dub-soaked atmospheres with serrated industrial textures, while 'Validation' rides a more urgent, tunnelling pulse. Flip it for the paranoid spirals of 'In Your Orbit' and the slow-burner 'Natural Order', each anchored by detail-rich production and layered groove. Rooted in classic hardware sensibilities but driven by a personal, future-facing vision, this is heady, unrelenting techno with purpose.

Amazing next-gen cyborg dance music from sibling duo Mathame (Amedeo Giovanelli, Matteo Giovanelli) , a self-described "audio project" working in ultra-clean progressive house sounds. 'I Will Find You' sounds like a progressive anthem from an Arcadian alternate timeline; think what might happen if Tiesto performed a DJ set in the Halo universe, to a stadium full of Super Soldiers. Its front cover model - a cyborg girl with an augmented plate face mask - is indicative enough of the sound you might expect, but the brothers Mathame's music touches on more than just futurity, with tautly squeezed vocals and "ouch" synths adding to an already impressive uplifter.

While its predecessor mixed fluid jazz with a deep house pulse, Black Mahogani II has no dancefloor pretensions. Instead, it offers up some of Kenny Dixon Jnr's finest deep jazz recordings. The album's centerpiece is undoubtedly the epic, 18-minute jam "When She Follows" - a tumbling, constantly-evolving journey through deep jazz built around looped acoustic bass, skipping jazz drums and exquisite Rhodes keys. The album is worth investing in for this moment of genius alone.

On one side is a hypnotic, percussion-heavy take by Ranil Y Su Conjunto Tropical, first and only released on LP. Raybone Jones has also been turning out the tunes for years but has kept a low-key profile while doing so. It's been a decade since his last outing on this label but that time hasn't diminished his skills: 'Detroit Driven (feat Bill Beaver)' is a dusty and ramshackle opening groove to get you in the mood and 'The Part We Dance' then layers up loopy broken beats and roughshod percussion with wispy pads that bring a future feel. The Master Mix is perhaos the most poignant, given that its airy, lush pads were put together by the late producer Marc Hartman who very sadly passed away in August 2024 at the far too young age of 58. But all four show due reverence to this monolithic moment in electronic music history, without resisting the temptation to add a little new. Grey-t stuff.

His magic on the keys helped set the sonic agenda of those times and led him to six hit singles and four albums. After all that success, though, he vanished in 1984 and left behind only a fine musical legacy. Random Vinyl pays homage to it with a revamped release of 'Remember,' featuring Fred Ventura's vocals and Ivy Sharrard's French verses. Producer Marc Hartman delivers a 2024 rendition, while Flemming Dalum adds a banging remix to make this a great tribute.

Review: For the recording sessions for Gorthleck, long-running collaborators Paul 'Mudd' Murphy and Ben Smith set up a small studio in a loch-side house in the Scottish highlands. The dramatic scenery and ever-changing weather patterns seem to have proved inspirational, because the album is arguably the downtempo duo's strongest to date. Variously influenced by kosmiche, Balearica, neo-folk, ambient, Tangerine Dream and movie soundtracks, the album's nine tracks meander along impressively, subtly shifting shape whilst winding their way into your subconscious. It's a beautiful set from start to finish, rich with hazy musicality and mood-enhancing moments, and comes highly recommended.

Under Me Sleng Teng (version) (4:53)
Review: Wayne Smith's 'Under Mi Sleng Teng', released in 1985, is a milestone in Jamaican music history and one that helped launch a new genre and transform island culture overnight. Its innovative digital bass line not only impacted Jamaica but also bridged reggae with US hip-hop production values, which went on to influence global music. Over 200 versions of the riddim have been released, and artists like 50 Cent and The Prodigy have incorporated it into their work. Originally issued as a seven-inch single on the Jamaican Jammys label, Smith, who passed away in over a decade ago at age just 48, left behind a legacy rooted in Waterhouse, a troubled Kingston neighbourhood.

Review: Pam Todd & The Love Exchange's 'Let's Get Together' dropped in the golden disco era of the late 70s and is one of our all-time top jams. The percussive breakdown at the mid-section is magic, and it all oozes funk, as well as having a proper singalong vocal up top. Mr K maintains the care of the original while tweaking the drums for modern floors across three subtly different mixes here on the Shrylden label. We found this one in the warehouse, so don't sleep, cause it won't be around long.

Rawax Aira Series Vol 2

Deep In The Stars (8:00)
Rock The Box (8:20)
Review: There's a delicious simplicity to the concept behind Rawax's Aira series, which involves much-lauded producers creating new tracks entirely using Roland's retro-futurist equipment series of the same name. Given Ron Trent's association with the machines the series was inspired by - TR-909, TB-303 etc. - he was clearly an obvious choice to get involved. As usual, he's conjured up some classically melodious, evocative and emotion-rich material. "Deep In The Stars" sees him in late '80s/early '90s deep house mode, with twittering melodies and ocean-deep pads wrapping themselves around a decidedly tactile groove. "Rock The Box" is typically expansive, with robotic vocals and a whisper of electro amongst the sweeping chords and intricate synthesizer motifs.

Review: It's taken a while, but finally Chiwax has repressed their 2014 reissue of Ron Trent's brilliant 1992 EP 'Love Affair', which on its initial release was officially the Chicagoan's follow-up to his peerless debut, 'Altered States'. All six mixes from the original 12" are present in remastered form. Four of these come from Trent himself: the wonderfully warming, sparkling and starry 'Ron Soulful Mix' (which some would argue provided a blueprint for his later work with Chez Damier), the stripped-back and sub-heavy 'Bass Shaker Mix', the riff-driven joyousness of the 'Underground Mix' and the sleazy, sub-heavy and alien-sounding 'Beatnik Mix'. The remaining mixes are by 'executive producer' Braxton Holmes: the dense, breathless and sweaty '326 Mix' and the classic Chicago deepness of the 'Smooth Mix'.

Review: It's finally here... V.I.V.E.K launches a brand new label and, as the title suggests, it's something a little different to the deep 140 piledrivers his System Sound is known for. Two rootsical excursions and two killer versions, this is the sound of the System champion bringing things back to the source. The title track (featuring longstanding System MC Dego Rankin) is a warm dub jam, spaced for good measure. Flip for "Galactic" as V.I.V.E.K flings us further east on a ship powered by Oriental strings and another rolling dub groove that's designed to make rigs purr. Beautiful.

Donna Washingtons - "You Can't Hide From The Boogie" (4:06)

Review: Donna Washington, a legendary soul singer from LA, is known for hits like her duet with The Dramatics' LJ Reynolds, 'I'm Into You.' However, just as good is 'You Can't Hide From The Boogie' is a disco classic that got revived amongst heads after it featured on Boogie Times Presents The Great Collectors Vol. 8 in 2008. Now, it's getting its own standalone 7" pressing and is a high-energy, funky gem complete with powerful horns and driving drums, all perfect for the dancefloor. On the flip side, Linda Clifford's 'Build A Fire' delivers a more seductive, deep boogie sound, showcasing the enduring allure of 1980s disco and boogie music.

Review: This hard-hitting EP of tough-as-you-like roots was dropped to great acclaim in 1981. The deep and heavy dubs were mixed by the one and only Scientist at the legendary King Tubby's studio with great mic work from Michael Prophet, Patrick Andy and Alric Forbes. The original has been fully remastered for this reissue which comes on both CD and vinyl formats. It is music drenched in island vibes with dark soul and plenty of great horns. The mixing is of course next level, as always with Scientist, so you can be sure of a real trip when listening to this one front to back.
