Review: End of Level Boss Records is a joint project from Tusk and Cyclonix celebrating the world of video game technostalgia through electronic music. End Of Level Boss 1 Ganondorf. Ganondorf is the humanoid form of Ganon, the ultimate embodiment of evil and hatred, the nemesis of Link, and the final boss in many of the Legend of Zelda games. Ganondorf is a formidable sorcerer and a shapeshifter. His hatred is so intense that he can survive even the total obliteration of his body and remain conscious. An ultimate bad ass.

ENDZ 022 (splattered heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: ENDZ 022. Rel: 25 Jul 18
  1. Track 1 (10:17)
  2. Track 2 (10:43)
Review: For the latest missive on the Eastenderz imprint he established in 2014, East End Dubs has turned to a notoriously reliable source: Romanian minimal scene stalwart Arapu. It's the Bucharest-based producer's first missive of 2018 and also marks his Eastenderz debut. He begins in confident fashion on Side-A, wrapping distant percussion hits, atmospheric field recordings, bubbly electronics and deep space chords around a smooth but mind-altering groove rich in shuffling drum hits and hypnotic sub-bass. Turn to the flip for a bolder and arguably funkier excursion, where metallic hits and pot boiling electronic motifs spit and dart above a classically low-slung tech-house groove.

Dawn EP (12")
Cat: SNKY 002. Rel: 25 Nov 13
  1. CUx3
  2. Dusk
  3. Zubr
Review: Sneaky Music maintain the pressure that the label's debut release from Silk 86 built up, welcoming London pairing Ashworth & Kiwi into the fold with the Dawn EP. South London based Kiwi's music combines influences from disco, funk and house and has notable released on Needwant and Deepshit, whilst East Londoner Ashworth debuted on Balsaal, garnering support from Dixon, DJ T and Josh Wink and recently teamed up with Citizen for Waze & Odyssey's label W&O Street Trax. Lead track 'UCX3' is a drawn-out, gradually swelling, half-euphoric-half-pumping roller, which the guys would be happy to admit was heavily influenced by Pachanga Boys' "Time." Demonstrating a more mellow side, "Zubr" has Ashworth showing off his prowess with the Wurlitzer whilst "Dusk" is arguably the wild card. Staying clear of the drum machines, this track paints a subtlety epic picture with a reverb-drenched piano and folksy violin drones, all being driven forwards by an ominous pulsating Moog bass.

  9. Logan Five
Review: Long-established house and techno twosome Dan Berkson & James What are proud to announce the arrival of their debut album, Keep Up Appearances, on their own recently minted Modelmaker label. To be released in December on beautiful double gatefold vinyl and CD, with reworked woodcut artwork by Conrad Felixmuller, it has been a long time in the making but the wait has more than been worth it.
Before now, Berskon & What have become synonymous with raw, machine made house and techno with no frills but plenty of heft on labels like Poker Flat and Crosstown Rebels. Their music engages dancers in the head, heart and heel in equal measure and this considered new album proves that once again.
Keep Up Appearances was written over the course of 18 months and has been whittled down from over 20 tracks, all made using mostly analogue gear with the usual Roland and Moog boy's toys, whilst the trusty Fender Rhodes, Space Echoes and Moogerfooger pedals are featured on many of the tracks. "At first we had a much more eclectic approach to making the album," says the pair. "But as time went on we found it worked better if we presented only the more electronic tracks together. It's not a straight up home listening album, but it still has a beginning, an end, and a couple of slower tracks that hint at our wider tastes away from the dancefloor."
Opening up with the deep space atmospherics of 'Quiet Life' the album immediately transports you to another world. The title track is then a melodically lush and uplifting affair with curious synth patterns ebbing and flowing beneath crisp percussion. Tracks like 'We Search For Answers' combine organic, wooden textures with more synthetic and trippy synth sounds that are as far away from your standard sample packs as can be imagined.
Across the course of the album there are dark, moody and emotive pieces like 'Worship' (previously released in extended form on the MDL02 single) featuring Qzen who reads a poem by Patience Agbabi in tantalising fashion as well as heavyweight, dubbed out techno groovers like 'Shadow Theory.' 'Make It True' (of which Seth Troxler will be releasing an extended edit on his Play it Say it label, complete with high profile remixes) is another great collab featuring the vocals of JoJo de Freq, and the track itself is a harmonious, radiant house jam that is humid and human in equal measure. The otherworldly, snaking 'Feel Free' again showcases Berkson & What's ability to coax alluring emotions out of their machines and closer 'Logan Five' wraps things up in suitably spangled, textural fashion.
Despite the fact much of this album will work on a dancefloor in the hands of the right DJ, there's an invention and musicality to it that renders the whole thing hugely listenable away from the club. A testament to Berkson & What's analogue invention and fluid ideas, Keep Up Appearances really is a master electronic oeuvre.

Spacejam (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: WRECKS 3. Rel: 07 Jul 14
  1. Spacejam
  2. No I Didn't
  3. Oist Mal
Review: Klasse Wrecks welcomes Bristol-based Marco Bernardi to its ranks following strong releases for Clone, Delsin, Rawax, Planet E, and most recently the Kelly Twins' Happy Skull label. Spacejam provides an EP of demented drums, fiddling electronics and refreshing originality, showcasing the signature sound of the studio-obsessed Scottish born DJ and producer. His idiosyncratic style runs through the three tracks here, from the space jack and Green Velvet-inspired vocals of the title track, through the rubbery funk of "No I Didn't" and frenetic acid of "Oist Mal".

  1. Brothers' Vibe - "Lonliness"

  3. Tominori Hosoya - "Paradise"
  4. George P - "Deep Space"
Review: Astute wax enthusiast Brothers' Vibe brings forth the third installment of his Mixx Split series, meant to cast light on what the multi-label boss is notorious for: soulful house music! Also signing the opening track 0.95Lonliness', the American prodigy takes us on a deep incursion, skillfully layering classic house beats over uplifting sounds into a heart racing groove. Newcomer Eddie Merced follows up with a deep and dreamy offering, infusing trancy vibes into a futuristic bassline for a full 6:29 minutes of 'Midtown Cruisin''. Delving further into the deep ambient realm, Japanese producer Tominori Hosoya doles out some tribal sounds for his spatial track "Paradise". Closing tune "Deep Space" gives away just a bit of the surprise in its title, as George P injects his signature Tech House oomph in a contrasting murky bassline.

  1. Together (8:15)
  2. Ada Lovelace (6:43)
  3. No Need To Worry (5:58)
Review: Inaugurating Crystalgrooves is Berlin fixture Cinthie: a long standing figure in the underground electronic music scene of her hometown, resident at the infamous Watergate club, plus being the founder of top labels such as Beste Modus, we_r_house and Unison Wax with Diego Krause. She gets the new project off to an explosive start with these three raw house cuts. The A side features the bouncy and uplifting classic house vibe of "Together" which has an overly familiar hook to it and sure to work on the dancefloor any time. On the flip, she gets into some funked-up and discofied loops in the vein of DJ Sneak on the track "Ada Lovelace" while the moody heads-down feel of "No Need To Worry" is a perfect backroom dub if we've ever heard one.

Review: East Berlin's Beste Modus clan return with the fifth instalment of the series and it's another whopper! Cinthie lays down "Ghetto Bastard", a head-strong and kick-fuelled jerker reminiscent of Dance Mania's early output and "Jaaam", a deeper house joint with a subtle garage swing. On the flip, "Cityscape" by Ed Herbst is a spaced-out deep house cake with plenty of delay and a psychedelic touch, whereas "When I'm In The Elevator is bumpier and more club-ready. Another tight little EP from this crew!

BE (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VIS 265. Rel: 16 Feb 15
  1. BE (12" version)
  2. BE (Citizenn Warehouse mix)
  3. BE (Hercules & Love Affair remix)
Review: Revered UK producer Laurence Blake has unveiled his new alias Citizenn, a nod to his maturing sound and harder-edge approach to production. Along with this new name, comes a forthcoming release on 2020Vision, 'BE'.
BE features the vocals of former Azari and III member SYF, and an exclusive remix from Hercules & Love Affair. The original mix of BE comes through with Citizenn's much loved retro-futuristic sound that's overlaid with SYF's spell binding vocals. Hercules & Love Affair's remix follows, and maintains the darkness of the original before taking a playhouse-style approach that's riddled with wonky, cosmic hues. Rounding off the EP is Citizenn's Warehouse Dub Remix - a tough, and atmospheric techno edit, forged in the depths of the world's most renowned techno haunts including Fabric, Panorama Bar and Ibiza's DC10 - and a firm influence on Citizenn's musical direction. A further remix from Forrest and 2020Vision's very own Ralph Lawson will also feature on the digital release.
"BE was put together over a number of months during a hectic touring schedule, Cedric (SYF) and I were messing around with some sounds and after a few hours we had the makings of the track. I wanted to do something a bit more emotive something that could be listened to at home and in the club. Andy (Hercules & Love Affair) coming on board for the remix was like a dream come true for me. I remember seeing them on the first UK tour and have been a fan ever since. Hope you enjoy this package as much as I enjoyed putting it together" says Citizenn.
Citizenn is an artist with many strings to his bow. Having already made massive impact with slew of releases on discerning labels including Madtech and Love Fever Records, and subsequently named DJ Mag's 'Best Breakthrough Artist' of 2013, BE takes Citizenn into 2015 with his strongest ammunition yet.

  1. Umibozu

  3. Umibozu (Tomi Chair Move In The Deep Sea remix)
  4. Tentacles Of The Deep
Review: Bucketround presents the eighth EP written and produced by Manuel Costela, 3 tracks and the remix of Tominori Hosoya (Japan) inspired by Japanese Middle Ages, when mythological monsters wake up from the Deep.

"Omibozu (Original version)" is a trip of rhythms and percussion in the middle of a survival battle in the purest sound of American deep house style. "When Craken Show Up" provides us with a delicious fragrance and textures from the reefs, mixing feelings with the voice of the composer. "Omibozu remix" is the powerful touch of Tominori Hosoya "Tomi Chair" (HQ Pressing-Japan) and the dance floor face of the monster directly from Pacific ocean. "Tentacles Of The Deep" is the relaxing movement of the EP, from the caves of the darkness and naughty voices of Andrea Rocha to enter the depths mixed with Manuel Costela's piano.

Shine EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: LFR 009. Rel: 26 Jan 15
  1. Shine
  2. Desake
  3. Journey's End
Review:  Layered, progressive, modern electronic music with ethereal harmonics and a nod to analogue forefathers is a universal in John Daly's musical cannon. And with Shine he's formulated a song that could encapsulate a moment in time at a Love Fever party. That 5am throb. Peaks and lows of a breather in the night, the sweating crowd, the stabbing baseline and fluctuating strings played loud and proud. In short, and unstoppable EP from a producer on the very top of his game. A Detroit influenced yet clearly very contemporary EP with strong support already on this one. With the B-Side, Desake floats into the EP, with a lead vocal stab layering into a dream-like baseline and rolling drum pattern continuing where Shine left off. And Journey's End may well be the secret weapon on this EP, playing out like a bard's lament.

  4. Lavender (featuring Seth Cobblepot) (6:40)
Review: Rothmans turn to debutant producer Dawn Again, who strides onto the football-focused label with a confident grip of otherworldly hardware jams. As is customary on the label, the mood takes on a laid back approach to four to the floor grooves, with "Coloured Pens" kicking off proceedings on a soaring bed of psyched-out house optimism. While "The Italian" may be moodier in its demeanour, it's still just as mellow in its delivery, capitalising on alluring wave synths and reverb swells to great effect. "Plain Of Jars" takes a trippier direction with its bubbling FX and bongo-powered beatdown, and then "Lavender" switches things up with a rolling breakbeat undercarriage and plush lead lines on top.

  5. Nekta Ol Pa City Club (7:54)
Review: It's astonishing to think that Frak's Borft Records has now notched up three decades. The Swedish imprint remains as eccentric and essential as ever, as this label debut from inspired Norwegian oddball DJ Sotofett proves. By his standards, "Ol Pa Ibiza" and the stripped back "Ol Pa Klubb" are pretty straightforward, with the Sex Tags man laying ricocheting dub notes and percussion hits over a rock solid drum track and booming bassline. "Ol Pa SM-Art Bar" sees him channel the spirit of early British bleep techno and the darker end of Belgian new beat on a clandestine mid-tempo chugger, while "Drikkepause" is a quick-fire shot of ambience built around echoing bells. Finally, he heads for a dirty warehouse on the acid-laden, EBM informed sleaziness of "Nekta Ol Par City Club".

Review: Finale Sessions is excited about this release from Knoxville, Tennessee artist Alex Falk. He has been on our radar for some time now so we are pleased to share this with you! The A1 track "An Ever" is one of our favorite tracks on the EP, with dreamy pads and monstrous stabs making for a fantastic floor-stomper. Rounding out the A side is "Rrecs", a deep Techno cut with clattering chords and moving drums and claps. B1 track "What Is Free" is another solid peak time killer with thick stabs and cut-up vocals making for a perfect Finale Sessions release. Finally, "BR56" brings up the tempo while chilling out the vibe with dubbed-out chords, nasty filter work and a sound floating somewhere between Techno and House.

Review: The second salvo on Small Hours is something of an all-star affair, with four fresh, previously unheard cuts from some seriously talented producers. Huerta leads the way with "Hey Fredo", a rubbery and atmospheric affair that effortlessly joins the dots between locked-in deep house and bleep techno, before DJ Pipe wraps dreamy chords, funk-fuelled guitar notes and toasty organ riffs around a squelchy bassline on "Sky Lounge". Over on side B, Youandewan heads towards peak-time floors via the hypnotic and psychedelic throb-job "Cauliflower Wing", while Rub800's "Cmon" flits between deep electro grooves, bleeping electronica and toasty deep house.

  4. Freedom (Lukas remix)
Review: From the label: J Morrison smashed it with his debut track on Maximum Joy pt. 1, the highly addictive deep house cut 'Some Fella'. This mid tempo Afro-house track had that rare combination of being super deep - but with the power to rock any dance floor. The Freedom EP, J Morrison's first Full EP release is the same, and more. The lead track calls up a looped and filtered afrobeat sample that just keeps on giving. Reminiscent of Cottam's early work, and sure to be a hit in the sunshine of a festival stage or a dark club. "Stay High" is more driving, tribal, druggy affair that reminds us Peace Division in their prime. Late night heads down dance floor vibes, with a killer vocal sample that creates real magic. "Soft Play" is a deeper track and just like 'Some Fella' the arrangement and choice of samples merge create another floor friendly that will be a useful tool for a wide range of DJs. Alfresco Disco co-founder Lukas steps up for remix duties and flips the samples of Freedom for a more choppy, chicago style bumping house track - which rounds off the E.P rather nicely we think. We hope you think so too!

  1. The Wind
  2. The Wind (Quarion Bethlehem remix)
  3. Keeping Funk Alive
  4. Keeping Funk Alive (Toby Tobias remix)
Review: Jerome C, born and raised at Haifa City Port in Israel, is a declared fan of vintage gear; always looking to explore the special analog sound. He creates music with a sumptuous mixture of house, disco, funk, and hip-hop. He first hit the house scene partnering with Double Hill for Soul Clap's imprint Double Standard releasing the amazing "I Need Love EP". For his latest offering three new cuts pressed and published by the Spanish label Apersonal Music.

"The Wind", "Keeping Funk Alive" and "You Better Think", three tracks characterized by the analog raw gear sounds, deep house gems that rolls over warm sonic waves and melodic bassline beats. The whole mood brights with sex appeal.

Quarion and Toby Tobias commissioned for the remixes. The first one releasing the uplifting house melodic remix for "The Wind", and Toby Tobias taking the dark sides on mental minimal techhouse by reshaping "Keeping Funk Alive".

Chorale EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FFNV 04. Rel: 12 Oct 15
  1. Resorave (11:43)
  2. Grunge (7:52)
  3. Chorale (7:51)
Review: Launched late last year, the vinyl-only FarFromNormal label has really grown in 2015, opting for a quality over quantity approach. Continuing their focus on the up and comers, a fourth FarFromNormal 12" introduces Bucharest artist Julian with the Chorale EP his debut transmission in the vinyl format! Crisp sound design and punchy drum programming appear to be Julian's strengths on the basis of these three tracks, with opening track "Resorave" grabbing your attention thanks to some delightful little touches such as the supple piano, tripping vocals and psychedelic mood. Complementing this, "Grunge" suggests Julian to be equally adept at tumbling drum-filled DJ tools, whilst closer and title track "Chorale" is the trippiest production here.

The Persian Prince EP (180 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Voyage

  3. Escapism
Review: A storming debut E.P from The Persian Prince, Kasra V. A 21 year old from Tehran who hit the shores of London four years ago armed with a bag of his uncle's boogie & disco and a taste in music belying his years. A residency at Love Fever has seen him holding his own with the likes of Young Marco, Jonny Rock, DJ Nature, and a radio show on the prodigious NTS has seen him showcasing his tasted amongst the most listened on the station. Learning his craft over the last 3 years on his trusty MPC2000, battery of FM keyboards and midi synced drum machines, his debut EP comes with a synth infused sound and a nod to 80s sleazy late night b movies.

  4. Orange Love
Review: Continuing their quest to unearth deep house gems new and old, Vibes & Pepper introduce the world to Manuel Keyz with a killer four-track workout that makes all the classic moves. The strings and keys come in seductive, nocturnal arrangements, while the snippets of vocal come from true soul divas, all atop of bumping garage house funk. The tune that stands out to our ears is "Orange Love", replete with sexy saxophone fit for Lil Louis and dreamy key flourishes that give a considered and wistful tone to the track, but really there's plenty to work with on all four corners of this EP.

Review: Having previously showcased his fluid brand of techno and deep house on Suena Hermosa and Beste Modus, Diego Krause decided to launch the Unison Wax label as a vehicle for his productions back in 2013. Here he returns with a fourth volume, seemingly keen to wring maximum atmosphere and deepness via a quartet of smooth, well-produced cuts. He opens with a subtly starry fusion of techno hypnotism and quiet deep house warmth, before concentrating on groove with the late night tech-house throb of "Track 2". Flip for the bass-heavy, stripped-back groove science of "Track 3", and the typically Germanic afterhours pump of "Track 4".

Review: French crew D.KO have had some killer releases this year, particularly Mad Rey's recent effort but now tap Lyon based producer LB aka Labat aka Baptistin Cabalou, who has also released on Robsoul and BFDM in recent times. It's quite a dusty and soulful affair, all in all, and will appeal to fans of Detroit deep house, typically Moodymann or Three Chairs. Starting out with some blunted hip-hop style jams like "Dance Sista" or "STE 11 (You Know)", he's then into the groovy stuff such as on "Duper Avec Rancho" which is reminiscent of Theo Parrish's late nineties output, the sexy discofied vocal house of "Herbal Vapours" (a real highlight!) and the lo-slung soul jam "Queendom" closing out this great EP just nicely.

  1. Hmong Dignity (club mix)
  2. Hmong Dignity (Aaron-Carl remix)
  3. Hmong Dignity (DJ Bone remix)
Review: Fabrice Lig on DJ Bone's Subject Detroit label backed with killer remixes from Aaron Carl and DJ Bone! Allegedly stored in the Subject archives for some time, "Hmong Dignity" is finally unleashed and the original will be familiar to anyone that's witnessed a DJ Bone set in recent years. Eminently raw, but filled with melody thanks to those chords and restless riffs, "Hmong Dignity" is a fine example of how Detroit influenced European techno. A remix from the late, great Aaron Carl opens the B Side, lending the track a familiar dose of murkiness thanks to some stomach churning bass, whilst that instantly recognisable central melody is wisely retained. The accompanying remix from DJ Bone glides along on a tough techno meets electro vibe, superbly slicing up the melodic element to form an entirely different refrain.
