Review: Having built their reputation through 12" singles for the likes of Crosstown Rebels and Poker Flat, Dan Berkson and James What deliver their debut album, on their freshly minted imprint Modelmaker. Interestingly, Keep Up Appearances is an altogether warmer, melodious and more evocative set than you'd perhaps expect, with a smattering of rich downtempo cuts joining a solid selection of dancefloor-friendly deep house. You can hear a classic dub techno influence in cuts such as "Keep Up Appearances" and "Shadow Theory", while the acid-flecked, soul-soaked "Make It True" sounds like classic Osunlade. Best of all, though, are the more forthright efforts, with the ragged "Seraphim" standing out.

Review: Of all DJ duos currently operating in British dance music, Belfast boys Bicep might be the hardest to pin down (Optimo aside, of course). Certainly, this debut album is not easy to pigeonhole, though it is an enjoyably cohesive listen. This is largely down to two factors; the frequent use of deliciously colorful and loved-up synthesizer parts, and the duo's innate ability to utilize beats tailor-made for dancefloor devastation. So while keen dancefloor historians may notice sly (and not so subtle) nods to '89 rave, U.S house and garage, Italo-disco, late '90s progressive house, jungle and early British hardcore, the album never sounds anything less than a fine set of Bicep tracks. Expect it to be one of the biggest albums of the year.

Review: Boddhi Satva is one of the leading lights of African house music, with a natural style that draws on his ancestral roots as much as it heads into the future. This new collection on BBE celebrates nearly 20 years since Satva first emerged with his debut album, spanning a whole host of career highlights and collaborations. There are some equally legendary figures involved here, from Afefe Iku and Alton Miller to Abel Tabu and Maalem Hammam, but the constant is Satva's style throughout. It's deeply rooted and spiritual, but also immediate and infectious like the best house music should be. At 30 tracks strong, this is a perfect primer for one of the finest forces in global dance music culture.

Review: Given the deep, dreamy and luscious sound of his productions, it's perhaps unsurprising that Brawther has been a regular contributor to Chez Damier and Ron Trent's Balance imprint. As Endless neatly proves, the Parisian producer has provided the label with some tremendous music since 2009, much of which could pass as authentic Damier material. The latter makes an appearance on the wonderful title track, but his trademark sound - fluid, quietly soulful, bumpin', hazy and dancefloor friendly - can be heard throughout this essential retrospective. Naturally, there's more than a little Trent flavour to some of the cuts, too - in particular the enveloping pads and twinkling pianos of "VXVXVX" - making this a sublime collection of sumptuous, ultra-deep house.

Review: It's a while since we last heard from Brisa, a Japanese producer best known for his superb 2008 album "Elevation Perception", a cross-genre fusion rooted in nu-jazz. "Th3rd" appears to be his first album since and, as you may expect, differs wildly from its predecessor. While it's still rooted in interconnected eclecticism, this time round his colourful, vibrant and life-affirming musical fusions draw far more influence from '80s electrofunk, synth-boogie, hip-hop beat-making, the vivid productions of Hudson Mohawke, slick synth-pop, R&B, breakbeat hardcore/early jungle and footwork. It's a jaw-dropping mixture of sounds and styles, but one that genuinely works. If you buy one album this week, it should be this one.

Review: During the late 1980s and 1990s, few Italian producers built up quite as strong a catalogue of dreamy, tactile and sun-kissed deep house, ambient and downtempo tracks as Don Carlos. As this fine compilation proves, the tracks he never bothered releasing at the time were equally as good. Disc one focuses on completely unreleased fare (including a quite different arrangement of his greatest hit, the sax-laden dream house anthem "Alone"), offering up the kind of sparkling, life-affirming goodness that instantly evokes imagined memories of dancing on a beach at dawn. Disc two is more focused on rare and hard-to-find alternative mixes, including fine revisions of classic cuts such as "Re-Mida", "Aqua" and "Paranoia". Simply essential!

Review: If your fame is built on delivering rock solid dancefloor cuts, should your subsequent albums stick to the same approach or mix it up a little? It's a conundrum that many artists have struggled with over the years. Smartly, Detroit Swindle has decided to hedge their bets with High Life following 2014's Boxed Out. As full length albums go, it's a bit of a peach, and sees the acclaimed Dutch duo flit between sensuous, home-listening fare, jaunty, instrumental-laden workouts (see the cheery, smoky pop-soul of Tom Misch hook-up "Yes, No, Maybe" and Afro-fired bounce of "Call of the Wild" featuring fellow Dutch combo Jungle By Night) and tried-and-tasty club tracks (Seven Davis Jr collaboration "Flavourism", the driving disco-house of "Freeqy Polly" and "Cut U Loose").

Review: Given that it's been 14 years since French producer Hardrock Striker established the Skylax label, this retrospective catalogue mix-up has been a long time coming. Old friend DJ Sprinkles handles disc one, delivering a mix that brilliantly blends her uniquely dubby and spaced-out take on house music with dusty, soulful and largely U.S-centric deep house jams from the likes of Sameed, Lady Blaktronika, Chez Damier, Joey Kay and Carlos Nilmmns. On the second disc, Hardrock Striker focuses on more recent label material, whizzing through a swathe of tactile, deep and groovy retro-futurist cuts from the likes of Octa Octa, Niko Marks, Groove Riddim and Garage Shelter.

Review: Somewhat surprisingly, Floorplan's third album is not coming out on the M-Plant label established by founder Robert Hood, but rather Will Saul's Aus Music imprint. Either way, it's Hood and daughter Lyric's first Floorplan LP for three years and is full of spot-on techno treats. Those familiar with their style should know what to expect: big room ready loop jams that make extensive use of short, soulful samples, cheery electronics and lots of gospel influences. Highlights include the rubbery deep house/disco/techno fusion of "Oasis", the Terrence Parker style piano rush of "Brothers & Sisters", the stomping gospel techno insanity of "Song Like This!" (the album's standout moment) and the deeper, bluesy techno hypnotism of "I Try".

Morning/Evening

  1. Morning Side
  2. Evening Side
Review: Keiran Hebden rarely does things by halves, though it's still surprising to find that Morning/Evening, his eighth full-length, consists of two contrasting 20-minute explorations, each inspired by a time of day. "Morning" is, as you may expect, warm, bright and evocative, with intoxicating Eastern vocals, dreamy chords and various bursts of melodious instrumentation riding a rolling, jazz-flecked, soft touch deep house groove. It is, of course, intensely beautiful. Hebden largely disposes of the beats entirely on "Evening", delivering 15 minutes of picturesque electronic melodies and sunset-friendly ambience, before introducing a jazz-flecked house rhythm for the final five minutes. It, too, is a thing of great beauty.

Review: If you were judging Kieran Hebden's 11th Four Tet studio album merely on the way it's presented, you'd immediately think he'd spent the last two years immersed in early '90s ambient house albums. While it's unlikely he's done that, it's fair to say that New Energy does owe a debt to classic electronica sets from that period. For all the exotic instrumentation and subtle nods to post-dubstep "aquacrunk" experimentalism and chiming, head-in-the-clouds sunrise house, the album feels like a relic of a lost era. That's not meant as a criticism - New Energy is superb - but it is true that his choice of neo-classical strings, gentle new age melodies, sweeping synthesizer chords and disconnected vocal samples would not sound out of place on a Global Communication album.

Review: It's that time of year again. 12 months on from his last album-length outing as FP-Oner, Fred P once again dons the alias for 7, a third numerically titled set in as many years. As usual, the music is rarely less than immaculate, with the imaginative and talented producer showcasing most sides of his musical personality. Highlights come thick and fast, from the yearning, soft focus melodiousness of quietly jazzy deep house opener "Smiles" and shimmering Motor City techno futurism of "Travelling Zones", to the blissful house minimalism of "Simple Things" and acid-flecked late night hypnotism of closer "Arigato". Superior electronic club music composed by a master: what more do you need?

Review: Given the brilliantly simple concept behind this fine compilation - contemporary Detroit producers remix Funkadelic - we're rather surprised nobody's done it before. With 17 varied re-rubs stretched across two hugely entertaining CDs, there's plenty to enjoy. Highlights come thick and fast, from the deep house/P-funk fusion of Alton Miller's take on "Get Your Ass Off and Jam" and Andres' loose, hip-hop influenced revision of "Music For My Mother", to the thrusting loops and heady late night hypnotism of Anthony Shake Shakir and T-Dancer's version of "Standing on the Verge". While many of the versions stay relatively faithful to the original, the more "out-there" interpretations - see BMG's outer-space ambient dub of "Maggot Brain" and Moodymann's epic revision of "Cosmic Slop" - are also consistently impressive.

Review: Killer new LP length project from the man that is Gifted & Blessed! Although Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker has been producing his soul-filled machine music under a number of aliases since 2004, most notably as Gifted & Blessed, the past year has seen him break out with releases for high profile labels like All City, Eglo and Wild Oats, with his release for the latter providing one of the most memorable bespoke vinyl releases of recent times. However, its his own eponymous label that has been the primary home for most of the producer's recent work, with the 3 Aspects of One EP providing the most recent example. One of this year's most appropriately named LPs, Within These Machines is by no means the LA resident' s first album but it does see him expand his style somewhat with typically excellent results. There are more overtly house and techno moments here for example, though tracks like the gurgling "Tesla's Notebook" and restless "Rain Dance" are as experimentally minded as ever.

Review: Big Strick's latest full-length offering on his own 7 Days Entertainment label is a family affair, mixing tracks from the veteran Detroit producer with similarly deep and woozy jams from his 16 year-old son Tre Strickland, AKA Generation Next. The father-and-son team's approach to house - wringing atmospheric soul from bubbling rhythms, warm chords and blazed melodies - is surprisingly similar, as shown by the two deep, jazz-flecked collaborations showcased here. Elsewhere, both impress with their individual contributions, with Strickland Junior's slap bass-infused deep head-nodder "Flynn's" and sweet, winding "Mo Money" standing out.

Review: South Korean star Peggy Gou continues her seemingly unstoppable rise by serving up her first ever DJ mix CD. It's a contribution to one of the longest running series in the business, DJ Kicks, and she's used the opportunity to showcase the depth and variety of the music in her crates. Beginning with the classic early '90s ambient of Spacetime Continuum, Gou flits between humid, mid-tempo Balearic house (her own "Hungboo"), acid-fired downtempo electronica (Pearson Sound), throbbing 1990 peak-time anthems (Weatherall's ace but largely forgotten remix of Sly & Lovechild), hypnotic techno minimalism (Dorisburg), main room throb-jobs (Hiver), pulsating electro (DMX Krew), classic breakbeat hardcore (Shades of Rhythm), post-dubstep (Kode 9), dark tribal drum jams (Black Merlin) and sunrise ready Motor City brilliance (Deniro).

Review: Available on CD for the first time outside Japan, these eight tracks come from the Kyle Hall archives, all recorded by the young producer before the turn of the decade, and is presented as a homage to where Kyle lived at the time in his father's basement on the west side of Detroit on Joy Rd. From the outset, Hall's second album is loose, melodious, heady and synthesizer-heavy, with broken beats and wild, experimental rhythms combining effortlessly with jazz, jazz-funk, boogie, soul, Herbie Hancock and '80s electro influences. It makes for thrilling and hugely enjoyable listening and offers proof of Hall's musicianship and ability to repackage a wide range of influences.

Review: Jazz-wise deep house and downtempo producer Hanna has a string of fine albums to his name stretching back to the tail end of the '90s. Bless, though, is his first full-length since 2008, and sees the Cleveland, Ohio man transfer to Theo Parrish's legendary Sound Signature imprint. Each of the album's ten tracks comes dripping in hazy, late night soul, as Hanna smoothly shuffles between hazy nu-jazz explorations and various strains of sensual deep house. For the DJs there are plenty of floor-friendly moments, while the inclusion of a string of groovier downtempo workouts should please the home listening posse.

Review: A couple of years back, Running Back boss Gerd Janson wrote an in-depth article for Red Bull Music Academy about Tony Humphries' legendary "Mastermixes" - all-action mixes originally created for NYC radio stations in the '80s and '90s. With this in mind, it's perhaps unsurprising that he commissioned the legendary DJ to give the Running Back catalogue the same treatment. Predictably, Humphries has come up with the goods, delivering a loved-up, melodious and classic sounding trip through mostly synth-heavy, classic-sounding label highlights. That it sounds like the kind of set you'd actually hear from Humphries is testament not only to the quality of his track selection and mixing, but also the suitability of the Running Back catalogue.

Review: Given that he took his DJ/production pseudonym from the name of a 19th century Romanian writer of folk stories, it's no surprise that Petre Insperescu's chosen form of techno is shuffling, atmospheric and classically-minded. Sitting somewhere between Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos and Nicholas Jaar, his sparse but well-rounded productions are simultaneously pleasingly calming and genuinely energetic, full of curious touches (a twinkling, distant piano here, a cut-glass string trio there) and gentle exploration. Gathered together and mixed into a seamless whole, as on this first mix for Fabric, they offer an intriguing journey that should appeal to all those who love their techno subdued and atmospheric.

Review: Studio K7’s long running mix series, DJ-Kicks, continues with an instalment from NYC disco head Juan Maclean (former hosts include the likes of Hot Chip, Booka Shade and Henrik Schwarz). Sculpted with a combination of classic tracks and more recent cuts, the mix displays a diverse collection of songs that are more focused on the club than past mixes.

Although Maclean is mostly known for his productions and live performances, he is also a DJ of some repute and his inclusion in the series is no surprise. What is somewhat intriguing, however, is his decision to make a straight up house mix. Over the running time of seventy-two minutes, Maclean keeps the energy levels high as his unleashes his collection of records meant for the club. Selecting from a rich tradition of house music with a disco twist, he includes a combination of classic tracks like Rick Wilhite’s "Get On Up" (remixed by fellow house don Theo Parrish) and recent disco cuts from the likes of Shit Robot, Still Going and 6th Borough Project.

The mix has a free flowing feel throughout due to Maclean’s raw method of producing: the whole compilation was mixed live using only two turntables, a couple of filters and a tape delay, placing the emphasis squarely on the sprit and excitement of the mix as opposed to its sound.

Review: In recent times, Studio Barnhus co-founder Kornel Kovacs has delivered a string of eccentric, hard-to-pin-down 12" singles that drag house music in weird and wonderful new directions. He's at it again on Bells, the Swede's long-awaited debut album. While largely deep, melodious and quirkily lo-fi - the distinct sound of tape hiss is never far away - Kovacs nevertheless veers off in many different directions over the album's ten-track direction. So while the pitched-down UK funky rhythms and 8-bit synth melodies of "Josey's Tune" impress, dancefloors may prefer the rambunctious, redlined Latin-house thump of "Gex", the sparkling rave revivalism of "Dance...When The Record Spins", or the rubbery bounce and pulverizing analogue bass of "Pop".

Review: Danny Krivit's monthly party, 718 Sessions, has become an integral part of New York's nightlife over the last 10 years. Here, he raises a glass or two to celebrate that achievement, mixing up a selection of his favourite US garage, deep and soulful cuts that have rocked the dancefloor over the last decade. Kicking off with the jazz wise flex of Classic VIV and Lawaetz, Krivit moves through a variety of seductive sounds, touching on piano-laden deepness (Blacksoul), soft focus soul (Ralf GUM), sparkling Latin flavours (Adultnapper), delicious nu-jazz (Julius Papp), upbeat soulful garage for the heads (Su Su Bobien) and classic New York soulfulness (Digital Soul). He finishes on a high, with the Fantastic Aleems disco-boogie classic "Hooked On Your Love" - a triumphant end to a delicious selection.

Review: Lazare Hoche doesn't release that much music, but what he does put out is invariably excellent. Following a smattering of singles and an acclaimed collaborative album alongside Malin Genie - 2013's I Don't Sync So Volume II - he's decided to put together a compilation featuring his own productions and those by music industry mates. Access, then, is a lesson in warm and luscious deep house, with significant contributions coming from Luke Solomon (donning the Jean Caffeine guise on the dreamy and rolling "Jean Afterthought"), DJ Gregory's Point G project (the ultra-deep pulse of "La Lampe Du Vizir Adjane"), and pals Skymaster and Mandal. Hoche's own contributions rank amongst the compilation's highlights, with the title track delivering a pitch-perfect lesson in the seductive powers of dreamy, dust-encrusted deep house.

Review: On this second album from his Ancient Moons project, Damian Lazarus has decided to switch focus. Whereas the outfit's debut album, Message From The Other World, combined global music influences with Lazarus's usual tech-house rhythms and a touch of psychedelia, Heart of Sky is much more heavily influenced by the Crosstown Rebels' chief's rarely discussed soul boy roots. Of course, the beats and basslines still largely stick to the powder house script, it's just that this time they come accompanied by starry-eyed soul vocals, 1960s dream pop influences, bold piano flourishes, gospel choruses and, on rare occasions, smoky trip-hop aesthetics. As a result, it's undoubtedly a much more "human" album, and one with far more crossover potential than its predecessor.

Review: We're not quite sure who Levitation Venue is, or are - a quick web search drew a blank - but this collection of mostly previously unreleased tracks is really rather good. The showcased works were all recorded and produced at the artist's studio in Darmstadt, Germany, between 2010 and 2019, and sound like they were created using a variety of dusty old synthesizers and drum machines. The resultant tracks are variously colourful, deep, spacey, warm, colourful and alluring, mixing together elements of analogue deep house, hazy downtempo grooves, Italo-disco, mid-80s Pet Shop Boys style synth-pop, ambient jazz and synth-wave. Throughout, Levitation Venue's emphasis on mood and melody guarantees hugely enjoyable listening.

Review: During the 1980s, Mike Mangino was one half of New Jersey proto-techno punks Smersh, an outfit whose work has long influenced the more industrial-minded end of the lo-fi techno community. Here he re-surfaces on Joachim Nordwall's iDEAL imprint with a solo album that's altogether deeper and more dubby in tone that some of his previous work. Apparently created via live jams with a range of electronic instruments (synths, sequencers, drum machines and so on), "Coisas" sees Mangino flit between hypnotic dub techno ("Ramona Corner"), bleeping turn-of-the-90s deep techno (the superb "The Way You Are"), languid early morning soundscapes (the locked-in dub house of "Slowly I Turned"), tracks that doff a cap towards tactile Italian deep house (the rather lovely "Solitaire") and more experimental, glitched-out dub ("Amphetamine Jitters").

Review: The new incarnation of the famous fabric mix series serves up a big one here with Ibiza kingpins and US house torchbearers The Martinez Brothers laying down a fulsome 23 track mix. It brims with the sort of energy that they always have themselves in the booth and takes you on a contemporary trip through the bendy minimal of Cabanne, Frak's percussive workout and some tropical curveballs from The Bayara Citizens. The Brothers also impress with two of their own tracks - "Jam Joint" and "Mistakes" - full of wonky synth work and shuffling drums, and it marks another highpoint in their longstanding career.

Review: San Francisco-based DJ/producer Nick Monaco has long been part of the Soul Clap family, releasing his first 12" on the label back in 2012. Mating Call, a double 12" set running at album length, is easily his most expansive release yet. It's typically eccentric, delivering a range of songs - featuring his own distinctive vocals - that blend numerous styles whilst retaining a loose, funky and altogether rather kaleidoscopic feel. It's rooted in Balearic pop, but also touches on dub, deep house, boogie, dub disco and a strangely deep and contemporary take on the triple-beat rhythms of glam rock. It's hard to accurately describe, but is really rather good; certainly, it's one of Soul Clap's strongest releases of recent times.

Review: Four years on from the release of his admired debut album "A Shot In The Light", Disco Halal founder Moscoman finally delivers a sequel. It sees him subtly moving away from the druggy, mind-altering and often psychedelic brand of club cuts with which he made his name - bar the odd inspired, strobe-lit outing such as "Maker Baker Faker Taker", "Sense of Time" and the throbbing Vanity Fairy hook-up "Turning Tides" - towards a slightly more sofa-friendly sound that twists synth-pop, dream-pop, shoegaze and drowsy indie-pop into vivid new shapes. It's a canny move that guarantees smile-inducing thrills from start to finish, with the New Order-esque "Back & Again", baggy "Natural Born Losers" and beat-free "Golden Hours" standing out.

Review: Like the best instalments in the long-running DJ Kicks series, this mix from Motor City Drum Ensemble man Danilo Plessow gives a far better insight into his musical inspirations than his own productions ever could. While there are, naturally, great deep house moments included (Tevo Howard, Mr Fingers, Latecomer etc), these largely take a back seat to Plessow's other musical passions. So, we get soft-focus electric jazz (Sun Ra), dub wise explorations (Tony Allen, Basic Channel), sweet soul (Peven Everett), dusty afro-funk (Geraldo Pino), urgent leftfield disco (Loose Joints, Walter Gibbons) and even a dash of instrumental jazz-funk (James Mason). That it all makes sense musically, flows brilliantly and is effortlessly entertaining is testament to Plessow's skill as a DJ.

Review: Some years back, Ben Norris AKA O'Flynn looked set for a major breakthrough, with his EPs on Blip Discs and Ninja Tune getting singled out for praise. Since then, his career has stalled, though we wouldn't be surprised if this impressive debut album propels him into the spotlight once more. It's a wonderfully fluid, evocative and enjoyable set that attractively sashays between languid ambience, Afro and Latin-influenced cut-up club cuts that cannily fuse disco, nu-disco and deep house, drum dubs and percussion jams, and off-kilter affairs that defy simplistic categorization. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the dreamy dub disco flex of "Tru Dancing" and jazzy deep house warmth of "Painted Wolf", to the huggable dreaminess of two-step shuffler "Celestine" and the loved-up haziness of enveloping closing cut "Neptune".

Review: A few eyebrows were raised when Omar-S announced the title of his latest album. While clearly meant as a controversial talking point, the title should not distract from what is one of Alex 'Omar' Smith's strongest collections of cuts to date - and one with an all-star cast of Motor City collaborators (Rick Wilhite, Norm Talley and OB Ignitt all feature). Musically, it's pleasingly diverse, with Smith effortlessly drifting between 21st century P-funk ("In My City"), cowbell-powered deep-house funk ("Don't Leave Me Standing Yeea"), sparse and synth-heavy house hypnotism ("Mell'like Boom Boom In'dair"), disco-house jack ("Washtenaw County Horn Section"), sub-heavy Detroit-meets-Sheffield minimalism ("You Gotta Beat The Clock") and sunrise-ready dancefloor dreaminess ("Simply"). This CD edition also includes four cuts not available on the vinyl edition.
