Review: The arrival of fresh material from Prescription co-founder Ron Trent is always cause for celebration. Happily, this new two track missive from the Chicago deep house legend more than delivers on its promise. A-side "Kinky City" is as melodious and musically rich as you'd expect, with Trent layering evocative vocals, spacey chords, tumbling synth-strings and bubbly electronic motifs on top of a snappy, analogue drum machine groove. He shows off his impeccable piano playing skills on the warm, rich and soulful flipside cut "Omi Tutu", which boasts slightly more organic sounding drum hits and a bassline that evokes memories of "Sueno Latino" and other similarly minded Italian dream house gems.

Review: LA-based band ASHRR picked up plenty of new fans with their recent Sunshine Low album and now they're back with the sixth single from it and it comes with some seriously heavyweight names on the remix. Chicago house pioneer Ron Trent does his thing to 'Please Don't Stop The Rain' by going super deep, spine tingling and heady with some lush arps and distant guitar twangs adding a Balearic feel. Dub treatments come from the Prescription boss himself, while ASHRR's alter ego, ASHRR Soundsystem, offer up an instrumental and a remix that lay down dubby house drums and lush chord work. This one keeps the summer vibes going well into winter.

Review: Two legendary producers joined production forces in 1999 to create one timeless track that sees the light of day again here. Ron Trent and old friend Chez Damier were co-owners of one of the most important house labels of all time - Prescription Records - and they re-teamed up for this deep house classic for Ron's first full length album Primitive Arts. For the remix package, Atjazz deliveres an extended remix that amplifies the groove while maintaining the soulful depth of the original. Atjazz's signature melodic refinement and rhythmic precision shine through, making this version more uplifting yet hypnoticia lush reinterpretation that still respects its deep-rooted heritage. On Side-B, two more Ron Trent gems receive modern reworks. Review: Welcome to Is A Feeling, a brand new label presumably from Triform who is also known as Scott Featherstone, and Beyond A Void, and Lemongrass. He has a kick for digging deep into his archives to turn out old but still godlier tackle and we guess that Underground Grooves Vol 01 is another such project. This 2" packs plenty of irresistible heat with the lively and low slung drums of 'Take Control', silvery tech edges of 'Skipron' and best of all, the raw, jacked up house of 'Remember Me.' All three are timeless and very useful tunes.

Review: With Harmonia, Trikk delivers a deep, expansive journey through a range of club sounds for Innervisions. The project remains grounded in dance floor energy but 'Sagrado' stands as its emotional and sonic pinnacle-pure club music, expertly crafted. It opens with crisp kicks, claps and a bubbling bassline but slowly blossoms into something more atmospheric and uplifting, like a musical sunrise. Review: An artist who continues his tradition of lush, Afro-influenced deep house with a release that exudes groove, musicality and tight craftsmanship. Trinidadian Deep (Damian Lee Ah Yen) has been one of the most consistent and respected names in deep house music for the better amount of 20 years now with his latest record being a perfect example at the quality and musicality of his style. Review: Russian Tripmastaz is back with more devastatingly effective tech house that's infused with a touch of minimal, dub and garage. The prolific producer really knows how to tap into the dancefloor with his tunes and this one shows that from the off as 'Politics As Usual' sucks you in with a nice deep, loose groove that's lit up with singing leads. A dub mix pairs back some of the synths to allow the cavernous drums to shine and then 'Coffee Smack 4 Dat Azz' gets more raw and direct. 'Scarp' shuts down with physical drums and squiggly acid that bursts out of the speakers.

Review: Russian DJ and producer Tripmastaz drops four new ones on his label Respect The Craft, carefully spanning jackin' deep/garage house with subtly trancey elements. Two tracks, two versions: 'Rare Sensation' and its dub version appear in classic fashion, cleverly blending randomized, broken-down elements with swing, blurring the lines between them. B-siders '3000', and the remix by Space Program, are surprisingly different in sound to each other, yet neither are short of deserving the crown of 'spacious vibesetter'.

Review: Lausanne in Switzerland is not only home to the admirable Black Pattern Records imprint, but also sometime Street King and Mood Funk Records artist Dexter Troy (real name Alexandre Grazzola). Here, label and artist join forces for the first time to launch the latter's new series, The Double Take. The idea seems simple: Grazzola drops two fresh tunes, each of which gets reworked. The vibe of his original tracks is gritty, energetic and effects-laden disco house, with the gargantuan, Sylvester-sampling 'Needin' You' being followed by the deeper and more locked-in 'Without You', which incorporates elements from an Alicia Myers classic. DJ Sneak - a major influence on the sound explored on the EP - delivers an energetic, filter-sporting tease-and-release take on 'Needin' You', toughening it up in the process, before Groove P drops a more rubbery and expressively funky take on 'Without You'.

Review: Rebirth serves up the first in a mini-series uncovering hidden gems from Italian house music's recent past, after the popular Ciao Italia Generazioni Underground compilation they recently presented. Bonus EP Uno features the deeply emotive 'Secret Doctrine' by The True Underground Sound Of Rome Ft Stefano Di Carlo with its Marc Kinchen style vibe, which was the A side highlight. Review: Tuccillo is an Ibiza-based groove maestro who turns out functional house that is never lacking in charm. And that's exactly what he does here on the great Koas label headed up by Kerri Chandler. 'Sundown' is pure vibes with its warm waves of rising chord loveliness and subtle sense of Balearic magic. 'Holding On' has a more choppy, garage-inspired groove with some nice muted horn leads and splashy finger clicks. It's a luxuriant sound that leads into the equally blissed out and smooth 'Whatever' before 'Velvet City' closes down with a super sweet bassline and more heartfelt house vibes.

Review: Although he's made plenty of appearances on Visionquest, an imprint renowned for the tech-tinged nature of its output, Guiseppe Tuccillo's house productions have always embraced dancefloor nostalgia and in particular dancefloor sounds from the late 80s and 90s. He's in that made on this surprise EP for Kerri Chandler's Kaoz Theory imprint. Both 'The Waves' and 'Apple Eyes' are warming, thickset and hypnotic affairs that doff a cap to Chandler's trademark brand of timeless New York deep house, while 'Breaking Leds' also incorporates raw, rave-igniting stabs, breakbeats and deep sub bass for a more UK-circa-1990 feel. Closing cut 'Apple Eyes', meanwhile, is a more shuffling and loose-limbed take on some of Chandler's premier late-night dancefloor dubs.

Review: Manuel Tur's Intertextual release gets pulled apart and rebuilt here by some fine remixes for the Spaced Repetitions label. The first out of the blocks is 'Omina' (DJ Counselling remix) with its layers of sugary and crystalline synth over supple house drums. 'Flakon' (All Is Well remix) slows things down to a dubbed-out world of downtempo bliss, 'Slow White' follows a similarly slow-burning route thanks to Yuu Udagawa's poised and dreamy remix and 'Shadowgraph' comes live with some psychedelic synth swells over yet more mid-tempo and percolating beats, which are one again the work of Yuu Udagawa.

Review: 'Wanna Dance' is the new jam by deep house heavyweight Sean McCabe (Good Vibrations) and Last Forever chief Turbojazz. Said to be conceived during the lockdown period, the track recalls the energy of classic Detroit deep house and even features one of the city's favourite voices in the form of Javonntte. On the flip, the spiritual vibe of Moondance's rework calls to mind the work of Motor City legend Alton Miller, while EVM128 aka Evermean Beats really soaks up the vibe of his new hometown - London - on his nu-jazz broken beat perspective that would make even Kaidi Tatham stand up and notice.

Review: A reissue of a 1988 house classic by DJ and producer Hipolito Torrales and company; 'You're Gonna Miss Me' is an incipient deep house classic, often described as one of its pangaeic moments, being an effective early production masterclass as well as a precursive blueprint for garage house. This fresh 12" version ' is a weightily produced stonker, with Cinthie's version channelling an extra low-middy grit, and Terry Farley and Wade Teo's version elbowing their way to string-laden euphoria with equal voracity. The original appears too, in all its raw, reissued charm.

Review: Tweak's latest is another fine trip through rhythm, texture and atmosphere across three originals that are couched in broken beat. 'Generation' leads with lovely laidback grooves and a warm, gloopy bassline as precise electronics merge with a hint of vintage soul. The 'Red Rover' (Rework) is another sunny, horizontal sound with bubbly broken beats and lush flutes adding the hook, then 'Fathorn' explores darker, more tribal rhythms with deep bass and ritualistic percussion. Raw Deal's Freedom Time Remix of 'Fathorn' takes it further with some fluid grooves and expressive brass top notes next to glowing, golden Rhodes chords. A fantastically feel-good and fuzzy sound.

Review: Fresh Sounds #000 is a new and unique series, limited and numbered to 150 examples thanks to the efforts of its parent company Ribo Cochlee. For the very first edition of the series, a mockley crew of newcomers come to the fore, be they DJ Moar, Disco Flegrei or Holdtight. Centring on woozy jazzdance and disco with an airily produced bent, the highlights on this one have to be Flegrei's 'Titamesque', which basks in a kind of sexy sophistry procured by the heady combination of live drums and a (we think) muted bass clarinet, and Yured Jones' 'Far Away', which breaks from the genre prescription for a more cinematic breakdown.

Review: Mark Night's label is one of the UK's biggest when it comes to main room house sounds. This sampler shows exactly what it is all about as we head into the madness of the Miami Music Week and then Ibiza soon after. Twolate opens up with 'Baila' which has tribal drums and percusison that stomp with real heaviness under wild vocals. CASSIMM & Gene Farris combine then for the maximal monster that is 'Party People' with all its sweeping synth filters and James Haskell's' 'Check It Out' is a funky groove that ducks and dives under stuff chords. Last of all is Danny Rhys with the hooky andoopy joys of 'Sibali.'

Review: While quite a few of Type-303's releases have been heavily dependent on twisted acid lines and jacking drums, his latest missive looks to colourful Italian dream house and nostalgic 1990s deep house for inspiration. The results are predictably impressive, from the lilting synth-trumpet melodies, carnivalesque percussion, sturdy house beats and hands-aloft piano riffs of 'Is It Magic' (a kind of 21st century update of the classic Don Carlos sound), to the eyes-closed, sun-up gorgeousness of Mediterranean house classic-in-the-making 'Summer Nights'. Sandwiched in between you'll find the acid bass-propelled early morning hedonism of 'Garden of Love' and the breakbeat-driven dream house revivalism of 'Sexy Sax', where rubbery synth-bass and squally synthesised saxophone sounds catch the ear.

Review: Tyree is one of the early house artists from Chicago who played his part in shaping the hip-house sub genre, with its big beast, big vocal samples and plenty of attitude. Here his 'Acid Over' cut is served up on a new 12" from Chicago Vinyl with three different mixes. The first finds self-certified House Gangster DJ Sneak serving up a raw and rolling, loopy and frenzied remix that never quits. 'Acid Over' (Acid Over 23) is brilliantly cut up and manic with acid vocals and thudding house drums. Last of all comes Hugo's Piano Re cut version with its woody 909 drum sounds and mad whistles.

Review: A rarely legit example of raw hip house from Chicago's Tyree & Ungkel Huud, who are, well and truly, tired of this BS - by which they mean illegitimate house music of the wannabes' kind. MC Tyree buckles up for a challenging but knocked-out-the-park verse glided over four mixes, from Wade Teo's opener to an acid killer, decrying the falsity of upstart house producers: "get out my house! You been here too long... matter fact, you can kiss my..." With an instrumental mix on the flip too, you can be sure for a fiery start to your next vocal-soaked DJ set.

Review: Razor-N-Tape's white label series serves up its first-ever various artists collection here, and it opens with Windy City master Glenn Underground. His 'Happy House' is a joyous disco stomper with florid strings and lung-busting vocals. Rahaan adds his own edit to 'Be Cool', which is a jazzy dancer with magnificent guitar work and brassy horns. 'Hot Damn' (JKriv edit) keeps the love flowing with funky disco house energy and an air of hands in the air celebration and The Patchouli Brothers flip 'Love Explosion' into a strident, front foot wafered and pumping disco funker with gorgeous vocals. There I so much sunshine and joy in these tunes that they melt even the stoniest of hearts.

Review: It's a case of old school meets new school on this fresh new slice of house from Defected. Representing the vets is the one and only Louie Vega, while in the contemporary corner are New York's finest, the Martinez Brothers. Marc E Bassy also pops up on vocals for this feel good deep house gem. His part sung, part rapped delivery comes over soul drenched beats and nice singing leads, which have long been a hallmark of the great Masters at Work man, Vega. A TMBLV mix is more pumping, Honey Dijon cuts loose on elastic bass and rugged rhythms and Dom Dolla offers a more energetic and main room version.

Review: The "fool's paradise" is a classic device, espoused by many a luminary from Milton to Dante, referring to a special kind of metaphysical plane reserved for those too foolhardy to reflect on their lived misdeeds in any of the main three afterlives: heaven, hell or purgatory. It stands to reason, then, that a small band of nu-disco and house proponents should name their label after it, not least for the stupefying power of disco, and/or the sense of having evaded our sins when compelled to dance! A spin-off of Toolroom, head soundsmith Mark Knight gathers four guardian expiators to lead us into the vainest of all discotheques - Joey Vegas, Tenacious, Sgt. Slick, and Tommy Glasses - for a lulling set of automotive power-disco dreams, in which many a familiar sample from our fleshly lives - from the 70s and 80s, to be exact - filter in and out.

Review: Small Hours from the Berlin-based Brit Youandewan is a young and already cult label that does things well, if not fast. Yet here we get a second EP in quick succession with the sixth outing again offering up four vital names from the house and tech underground. Velvet Velour opens up with squelchy, funky bass on 'Show You The Door' before Liquid Earth melts the mind with impossibly bendy synths and stiff drums on 'Gummo Hardrive.' Flip this 12" over and you'll find some cosmic tech in the form of The Honda Boys's 'Funghi Pie' and gurgling, gritty, metallic deep space house from Dreaming Mind who offers up 'Mid-Bozz.' Top tackle for sure.

Review: Since the 1970s Danny Krivit has been a prolific re-editor. We're used to him cutting up classic cuts - think disco and soul, in particular - but he's never been afraid to turn his talents to contemporary cuts. That's what you get on this surprise Defected release. On the A-side he turns his attention to "Heaven", the killer gospel-inspired modern disco single from The Vision and Andreya Triana, turning in a version with plenty of drops, instrument solos and more emphasis on the righteous, life-affirming vocals. He's in a smoother mode on side B, extended and rearranging the rich and soulful dancefloor treat that is Kai Alce's Original NDATL vocal mix of The Dangerfeel Newbies' "What Am I Here For?" - a gem from 2016 that has previously been criminally overlooked.

Review: Detroit vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Javonntte is contracted by Marcel Vogel and Tim Jules for the smooth, disco-splashed house cut 'Just Because', now hearing a long-awaited 12" release on Lumberjacks In Hell, the clav-loving label named after the 2018 Vogel release of the same name. Known for his deep musicality and effortless brio, Javonntte's soulful touch now drops anchor on the original's groove, letting open the possibility for the three distinct remixes by Floyd Vader, Lyma and Stefan Ringer to follow. There come etched a future-leaning electro r&b cut, a Portlandian Yoruba house hitter, and a complementary post-boogie bust-up respectively.

Review: The latest V/A sampler record by Toolroom Records comes in the shadow of unfortunate news in regards to singer Kathy Brown, who, last we heard, was battling stage four cancer. Brown is the original featuring singer of Praxis' 'Turn Me Out'; her vocal contribution to the track has since gone sampled by many a deep and jackin' house producer, owing to its standout "work me with temptation" lyric, whose simple injunction and passionate delivery would seem to bottle the essence of an era (of overwork, of temptation, of desire). Now Toolroom continue to dedicate their latest releases to Brown in her honour; this time, her 'Turn Me Out' vocal is reworked into 'Turn Me Deeper', featuring a star cast of organ-synth peddling, deep house foundation-shattering producers (Wh0, Mark Knight, James Hurr), backed up by contributions by the likes of Shadow Child, Low Steppa and Maur as addenda.

Review: The French deep house label D3 Elements is now a decade old and to mark the occasion it has assembled a superb three part EP series featuring plenty of talents both new and old. The second EP kick off with some Japanese stylings from Koizumi Yukiko and his piano laced bongo workout '526'. Taelue sets off on a deep and heavy bassline pulse that will make floors march and Nemanja Krstic's 'Aquae Sulis' brings some jazzy chord work and bubbling funk bass for a nice heartfelt vibe. Gnork shuts down with a skittish, stripped back broken beat that makes this another diverse offering.

Review: The Dirty Blends label is really on fire of late. It deals in stripped-back and raw analogue grooves that throw it back to the warehouse heydays and early Chicago house sounds. Zodiac steps up first with a low-slung killer that is sparse but atmospheric with sleazy vocals unfurling up top only adding to the rawness. On the flip there are more frenzied and techno-leaning sounds of The Jak's 'Itz In Ur Head.' It's a brain-frying cut with squealing synth textures and caustic melodies all bring a scuzzy vibe.

Review: TrioRox is a new project uniting three prominent Italian music figures namely pianist Giovanni Guidi, bassist Joe Rehmer, and electronic musician DJ Rocca aka Luca Roccatagliati. Guidi, a jazz piano prodigy, has recorded for ECM and collaborated with Enrico Rava and Ricardo Villalobos before now while Rehmer, an American bass player based in Italy, has worked with jazz greats like Bob Mintzer. Review: Tony 'Addis', the man behind the Warriors Dance label and No Smoke project (amongst many other things) is undeniably one of British dance music's unsung heroes. That much is proved by this re-mastered reissue of 1990 LP "International Smoke Signal", an album so ahead of the game at the time of its release that it still sounds like the future. Most will know acid house anthem "Koro Koro" (here in altered, slightly more downtempo form), but it's the quality of the lesser-known cuts - the sub-heavy, UK steppas-influenced Afro-house of "East of Eden", the bleep-meets-Dream II Science deep house bliss of "OAU In Music", acid-fired "Anti Galactic Devotion" and "Pacific State" style E-rush of "Oh Yes (Freedom)" - that makes it such an impressive and essential set.

Review: California producer Space Ghost teams up with South Carolina-based singer Teddy Bryant for a sun-soaked ode to late 80s and early 90s soul. The record opens with the silky swing of 'Some Things Last Forever', giving way to lush, G-Funk-laced grooves like 'Majestic Fantasies' and club-focused cuts such as 'Unconditional (Club Mix)'. Bryant's vocals glide over Space Ghost's plush instrumentation, with tracks like 'Cheer Me Up' and 'Ultimate Love' channelling UK street soul and the balladry of classic r&b. 'Shine' and 'Ultimate Love', both featuring Morgan, add extra emotional weight. The pair clearly draw from a shared love of Teddy Riley, Jam & Lewis and DeVante Swing, but there's a lightness here that feels rooted in the present too-music that remembers the past without ever getting stuck in it.

Review: Although not as celebrated as many of his Motor City contemporaries, Norm Talley has been a key figure on the Detroit deep house scene for the best part of 25 years. Here he presents his debut album, a set that appears exactly 20 years on from the release of his debut 12". It's a largely warm, rich and inviting affair, with Talley combining samples from classic disco, soul and boogie jams with his own drums, keys and chords. The results are uniformly superb, with highlights including the beatdown style hypnotism of "Dub Station", the disco-house bounce of "Alright", the deep and percussive dreaminess of "Earth Vibrations" and the brilliantly jazzy "Paradise Garage", where Talley cuts-up killer electric piano solos over a sumptuous, jazz-funk inspired house groove.
