Don't Be Ashamed Of Love (3:59)
In My Bed (3:38)
Review:  We will always be stickers for heart aching, lo-fi soul and R&B fusions on neat little 7"s. This new one from Love Touch perfectly fits the bit and finds Amalia melt modern funk and boogie with classic, buttery soul vocals. 'Don't Be Ashamed Of Love' rides on crunchy hits with bold bass notes. It's a sparse, cold arrangement but that vocal adds real warmth while the subtle boogie vibes shine through. On the flip, the pace picks up and your rump will wiggle even more with 'in My Bed' bringing slick and bumpy beats and other exquisite vocal.

Sensational (3:35)
Good Time Girl (feat King Merc) (4:18)
Family Tree (4:00)
Rewards (4:57)
Review: Kylie Auldist is a heavyweight Aussie soul singer whose powerful lungs have graced many a hit over the years. Now, with the help of Lance Ferguson and Graeme Pogson, she's recorded a solo album, Family Tree, and this here EP features a selection of tracks from it. Gone is the raw funk vibes of old with Auldist opting for a bright and synthetic mid-'80s pop-soul sound instead. It largely works too with the Donna Allen-esque "Sensational", the chrome and carpet grooves of "Family Tree" and the late-'70s US funk style of "Rewards" as standouts.

Disco Beat Down EP

Disco (6:48)
Beat Down (6:05)
Review: Some high-grade re-edit action here, as dusty-fingered Chicagoan crate diggers Sadar Bahar and Marc Davis join forces with pal (and credited mixer) Rahaan on two fine tweaks of suitably obscure tracks. A-side 'Disco' is a groovy, funky, horn-heavy affair; a sumptuously string-laden, orchestrated blend of righteous gospel-soul, Philadelphia International style proto-disco and grooves reminiscent of those frequently employed on Steely Dan's most up-beat moments. 'Beat Down' meanwhile is a jaunty, percussive and sun-soaked slab of dancefloor-ready Latin jazz that speeds up as it goes along. The jazz dancers will love it!

Best Friend Around - "It's So Good To Know" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:36)
Foster Jackson Group - "Feel The Spirit" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:10)
Review: Given his reputation as Japan's "king of digging", you'll be unsurprised to learn that DJ Muro's latest scalpel-style Diguma Edits are of thoroughly obscure, hard-to-find disco cuts. For example, an original copy of Best Friend Around's hard to find modern soul-goes-disco number 'It's So Good to Know' - a warming and glassy-eyed cut full of hazy grooves, super-sweet vocals and spacey synth sounds - would cost you hundreds of pounds; Muro's shortened, light-touch edit seems a bargain at a fraction of the cost. Foaster Jackon Group's similarly rare 'Feel the Spirit', a carnival-ready slab of Brazilian influenced jazz-funk/disco-funk fusion, is given the Muro touch on the flip, with equally as exemplary results.

What About Love (3:10)
Got A Good Feeling (4:01)
Review: North Carolina outfit Brief Encounter have long been a cult band amongst funk, soul and disco collectors, leading to reissues of both of their albums (1977's Introducing... The Brief Encounter and 1981's We Want To Play). Here Expansion Records continues the trend of delving deep into their catalogue by offering a new edition of 1976 single 'What About Love'. The title track is undeniably excellent - a sweet, funky and attractive chunk of disco-era dancefloor soul just dripping with emotion. Over on the flip you'll find original B-side 'Get Right Down and Do It', a heavier slab of horn-toting disco-funk pleasure that boasts a seriously addictive bassline and some surprisingly surprising synthesizer flourishes.

Early Morning (3:50)
Review: He may now have ditched the '16 Bit Orchestra' (as his sometime imaginary backing band was called), but Orlando Marshall AKA Buscrates is still a master of revivalist, boogie-influenced synthesiser workouts. For proof, look no further than 'Internal Dialog', a kind of deep house lover's take on the revivalist synth-funk sound of Dam Funk rich in dreamy chords, squelchy synth bass and sun-splashed lead lines. He takes this warming, picturesque, analogue-rich boogie-not-boogie sound further on flip side 'Early Morning', a sunrise-ready slab of laidback Balearic boogie that comes from a similar headspace as Sven Atterton's brilliant 2015 single 'The Cove'. In a word - beguiling!

How Can I Forget You (3:34)
Review: Adeen Records is back with its The Bird series and this time Cad73 is the one at the buttons. First up he flips the age old classic 'Love and Happiness' into a smooth and seductive sound with lush chords and warming melodies. Flip it over and you will find a rework of 'How Can I Forget You' which becomes a Northern Soul great with big hooks and driving rhythms that will get big reactions in the club. Two different but equally effective and cultured cuts.

The Carver Senior Song (Class Of '83) (6:06)
Review: The Carver Area High School Seniors' 'Get Live '83 (The Senior Rap)' is a stone cold party hip hop classic. It has been out of print for some four decades, however, and so has become a rather hard to find and expensive record. Thankfully, Soul Jazz Records have got the rights to this full reissue which was first pressed in 1982 on the private press label Challenger. The cut featured as the standout on Soul Jazz Records' recent 'Yo! Boombox' collection and now standalone as a seven minute stunner. It's an old school party disco delight with great rap and killer beats, all presented with the original artwork.

Review: DC label Peoples Potential Unlimited makes funk like no other. Central Ayr Productions have already dropped great EPs and albums on the label and are now back with this lovely new 7". Atmosphere Strut (12" club mix) (9:21)
Atmosphere Strut (Kon's Fly Away edit) (8:38)
Review: Patrick Adams was responsible for producing tons of terrific disco records during the late 1970s and early '80s, but few are quite as dizzyingly good as Cloud One's 1976 cut 'Atmosphere Strut'. Created by Adams with the assistance of regular collaborator Peter Brown, the 9-minute plus track is notable for the extensive use of superbly spacey synthesizer lines, an infectious deep disco groove and a typically head-in-the-clouds lead vocal from Margo Williams. This reissue naturally offers-up Adams' original, must-have 12" club mix, but also a brand-new re-edit from disco rework specialist KON. He lengthens the intro, beefs up the bass and makes crafty use of some improvised vocals from Adams and Williams that were previously buried on the multi-track master tapes.

All I Want Is You (3:49)
Review: Leroy Burgess had already left a huge mark on Black American music by the time the 80s rolled around thanks to his part in Black Ivory alongside Patrick Adams, but he was about to hit on a purple patch of productivity scattered with one-shot gems like Convertion. The project was a family affair featuring the likes of his adopted brother James Calloway on bass, his cousin Sonny T. Davenport on drums and his sisters Renee J.J. Burgess and Dorothy Terrell on backing vocals. The lead track they recorded, 'Let's Do It', is a prime slice from 1981, in the years of transition from disco to boogies and it sounds as great as it did back then. The original B-side of the split release, a mellow ballad by Four Flights entitled 'All I Want Is You', is present and correct on this reissue from Demon Singles Club too.

All I Want To Do (3:34)
Review: In 1977 in Portland, writer Ron Stassens assembled members of Pleasure and Transport around Slickaphonic frontman Milton Davis and the result was an album's worth of amazingly soulful disco-funk, re-released in July 2023 under the Albina Music Trust label... However, here for the first time ever, on Soul7/Jazzman records' picture sleeved 7" 45, Milton Davis returns home in this most apt of formats, on only 500 numbered copies with the stand out 'Headed For The Disco'. A gorgeously sweet solid gold soul track that ventures into jazz funk at the beautifully timed electric guitar and organ breaks where the 'get down' is inevitable but satisfyingly returns to the repetitive refrains of the melody. Joyously extending what disco truly means, be that a hustle or a step back, here the breadth of this uplifting genre is celebrated, concluding in a lush decrescendo 'aaaahhhh...'. Add this to the more mid-tempo classically soulful smoochy B-side 'All I Want To Do' and you won't want to hang around, as Soul 7/Jazzman singles whilst applauding rarer grooves notoriously become collectables in themselves.

This new 12" kicks off with the emotionally intense and gospel-laced vocal sounds of 'Jesus Calling' with a passionate pastor lighting up the airways. 'Show Me The Way' is a more paired down sound this time with a raw soul edge and nice dusty drums, then 'Superior Disco' brings some lavish string stabs and funky basslines to some killer instrumental grooves. 'Loud Minority' closes out with some lovely jazzy organ work over more low-slung and dusty disco beats.

Review: Chuck Edwards (real surname Edwins) is the man behind his family band The Edwards Generation. He formed it after moving his family to the San Francisco Bay area, where they all lived in a motel to start with. By the time of the mid-70s, they had started realising and even put out a full length as well as appearing on TV. Here, Cordial serves up two of their best on a tidy 7". 'Get Up, Get Up' is the funk fuelled and soul-drenched opener with nice lo-fi production and deep drums. 'Get Out On The Dancefloor' is another lo-fi beauty with stomping kicks married to big horn stabs and a characterful vocal.

Review: Working with its sister label OST Recordings, Acid Jazz releases a new version of 'Family Tree' by Family Tree, on a smart-looking label based on the look of the original's Ananda label. For the first time since 1975, this new reissue comes with the Kevin Beamish Disco version and a shorter disco mix, as was initially compiled. Handcrafted by 'I Specialize In Love' hitmaker Sharon Brown and her group Family Tree, this eponymous disco-funk sheller is an unpolished study of musicianship above overproduction; the drums are dynamic and dry, lending ample space to Sharon's nostalgic familial reminiscences.

Review: Clap City reissue this glimmering eighties pearl first outputted by the Hartford, Connecticut outpost WFAB Records; their only release, in fact. The highly obscure First Approach Band come second only to the further bedimmed name of featuring artist Karen Santos. Now out on a newly edited 7" replete with a neat new j-card, 'Never Knew' and 'Mister Love' are two hooking establishers of style by the band and singer in combo; both tracks deal in a machinic disco-funk repetitiousness, and come gravied by a synthetic sports whistle to top off its vocal counterclaims of ignorance.

The time-honoured and unmistakable hit 'Beggin', already a hit in Pilooski re-edit form back in 2007, works its subtly breakbeaty, surround-clappy magic, perfect for those hankering after a more readily-DJ-mixable version of the hit. It is a much sought-after jam which, if you can even find an original copy, will cost you upwards of three figures. The instantly recognisable '90% Of Me Is You' has been sampled endless times by hip hop giants like Large Professor, Jaylib, Mobb Deep and more and is a bonafide rare groove gem that is always in demand. Perhaps it's the pairing of the languid guitar and strings, or Gwen's sultry vocals and that steady breakbeat that keeps people hooked. It's a straight up bit of boogie fire, with soul overtones good enough to suit the L850 plus you will pay if you try to get an OG copy. This one is a split that kicks off with Jake's 'You Are the Star.' It's propelled by neat and tidy bass guitar riffs with more decorative melodies and riffs up top. Chuck Davis Orchestra steps up in the flip with more lush and classy disco complete with effervescent string stabs and more funky bass. 'Spirit Of Sunshine' manages to bottle up just that and douse you in it from start to finish.
