Turn It Up (instrumental)
Turn It Up (acappella)
Review: Australian band The Bamboos have been holding down things on the funky side of town since 2001, gaining fans all over the world with their authentic, dirty funk nuggets. In the same vein as bands like El Michels Affair or Breakestra, these guys are students of the classic breaks that underpinned the sample-hungry glory days of hip-hop. They've also had the incredible honor to back up some of funk's most revered names, notably New Orleans hit-machine Eddie Bo, Syl Johnson and Eddie Floyd.

Ahead of their new album 4 comes single "On The Sly", a perfect slice of mid-tempo joy, which has the same rollicking cowbell-driven vibe as classic UBB staple "Get Me Back On Time, Engine Number 9" by Wilson Pickett. Soulsides MC and singer Lyrics Born joins them on 2nd cut Turn It Up, another popcorn funk winner complete with chicken-scratch guitar parts worthy of James Brown stalwart Jimmy Nolen. Hanging out with the Aussies seems to have rubbed off on the Californian MC, as he even sings "Turn it up mate" at one point! DJ's get taken care of with an accapella and an instrumental too, making this release a good way to put some funk back in your trunk.

Review: Get yourself geared up for festival season with some fierce party starters certified with the Glitterbox stamp. Melvo Baptiste leads the charge with 'Sweat', a sizzling disco house stomper with Dames Brown giving the biggest diva energy on her show-stopping vocal. Lovebirds bring unbridled joy on the Philly string swoon and slinky b-line funk of 'Burn It Down', while Art Of Tones & Inaya Day keep it peak time on the sassy strutter 'Give My Love'. Young Pulse & Fleur De Mur complete the set with 'Smooth Sweet Talker', another bright and bold vocal cut par excellence.

Black Truffle - "Dancing Through The Night" (6:55)
LTJ Xperience - "Sunny Groove" (5:08)
Review: Funkyjaws Music is back with more music to make your jaw go funky, this time in the form of a second volume of its Let's Dance series. It features a quartet of esteemed tune makers starting with Frank Booker's 'Yes No Maybe' which is a horn laced and loose-limbed delight, while go-slow master Eddie C brings his classy touch to the funky licks of 'Love Dancing Theme.' There are plenty of cosmic synth waves to Black Truffle's 'Dancing Through The Night' while the LTJ Xperience close down with a super laid back and summery vibe on 'Sunny Groove.'

Claudette & Ti Pierre - "Zanmi Camarade" (Tropical Treats edit)
Ti Marcel - "Nan Point La Vie" (Siwo version)
Ibo Combo - "Mateau"
Les Lups Noirs - "Pile Ou Face"
Review: Killer new Sofrito 12" with hypnotic Carnival rhythms, DIY electro and vital Compas experiments from the Haitian archives! Lead in the way is a subtle edit of "Zanmi Camarade" from Claudette & Ti Pierre by Stockholm's Tropical Treats crew, this 1979 cover version of the folk song that is quite bewildering, with haunting vocals weaving a spell over a heavy polyrhythmic drum machine groove and arpeggiated synth backing. Just as impressive is the Siwo update of Ti Marcel's rugged, hypnotic Rara track "Nan Point La Vie" is dominated by the single-note 'Vaksin' bamboo flute, which Sofrito call "nature's sub-bass". Holding it down on the B Side is some untreated material, with an Ibo Combo cover of Coupe Cloue's evergreen "Mateau" complemented by a "Pile ou Face" from Les Loups Noirs which was a highlight of the Strut compilation Haiti Direct.

Let's Dance Volume 4 is another various artists affair that launches with James Greenwood & Aniello's feel-good 'Look Of Love' which has it all - the sweet female vocal, the florid strings, the rolling bassline and big brass leads. Review: Maledetta Discoteca closes out its year with this special blue vinyl featuring a mix of brilliant Italo disco artists. They all hail from Italy and Argentina and are editing originals that span disco, electro, proto-house and more. Hararis' 'Si No Pagan' is the first under the scalpel and is a funky cut with raw drums. Lance's 'Yo Quiero A Lucy' is a more slowed down and seductive sound with 80s synths, Marta Paradise's 'Calling' (edit) is a direct and sugar synth laced house stomper and Alan Strani's 'Tension Salsable' brings things to a closer with a nice stomping disco grove with mysterious synths and lush percussion.

Review: Time to chow down on another low-down funk and disco feast at Bristol's Boogie Cafe. Label co-founder JTT lights the fire with a subversive James Brown edit. All raw and loopy, it's a fine twist on a well known classic. Flip for two cuts from Horses-affiliate Laura Ingalls as she puts the EQ back into equine with two deeper dug edits. George Duke's "Party Down" gets a pumping, thumping, filtered disco twist while Roy Ayers gets an equally sweaty edit. Tasty.

Review: Le Disques Bongo Joe's latest EP is a joint release with Calico Discos. It offers up four fresh cuts from L'Eclair, a self-styled "exogroove post-internet" six-piece with three must-check albums to their name. Musically, the four tracks offer a breezy, summery and mixed-up blend of Tony Allen style polyrhythms, tropical funk guitars, languid synthesizer sounds, psychedelic electronics and copious amounts of mind-altering dub effects. Our favourites include the low-slung deep Afro-psychedelia of "Dallas", the rousing, horn-heavy EP opener "Cebando" (a future dancefloor staple for sure), and the Moog-laden sunrise dreaminess of "Atlantis".

Review: Freestyle Records continues to be an essential source for visionary funk and soul from across the globe, and now they're returning to recent signing Lance Ferguson and his Rare Groove Spectrum. This 12" carries some remixes and rarities that complement Ferguson's self-titled album from earlier this year. Things kick off with Alex Attias' dreamy, Latin-tinged edit of "Sweet Power, Your Embrace" before the original "8 Counts For Rita" bursts forth in a flurry of trumpets and salsa piano. "The Blessing Song" gets remix treatment from Flow Lab Kid, and then Ferguson tackles a cover of The Blackbyrds' "Blackbyrds Theme", all of which have the next level funk chops Ferguson has displayed elsewhere in his burgeoning repertoire.

Review: Parenthe Seizure, released on Counterpoint, features Sheila Landis, who has been a vital part of the Detroit jazz scene since 1973. She performs her unique style of vocal jazz and lends her distinctive voice to a wide variety of musical settings. She sings without artifice or gimmick, and her delivery is honest and direct. Landis approaches the music as if she's a horn player, and uses her voice to entice and enliven. Influenced by a wide variety of vocalists, from Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Betty Carter to Joni Mitchell and Aretha Franklin, she has absorbed these and other influences, filtered them through her own sensibility, and distilled from them her own unique sound.

Latitude is a seriously and proudly French artist who oozes sophistication and pop hooks that drip with attitude. The musicianship too is of the highest order - irresistible jazz-funk that glows at every turn. First off is the uptempo 'Leo (Extended Mix)' with big vocals from Parisian singer Club Celest and tight, clipped beats packed with funk. Review: Despite being something of a confirmed jazz-funk classic, Hubert Laws' "Family" was never released on a 12" single first time around. Curiously, the full version - contained on the A-side of this edition - only ever appeared on the veteran flautist's 1980 album of the same name. It remains, particularly in its original stereo mix form, a superb summer breeze of a jam, with a loved-up female vocal and punchy orchestration riding a sumptuous mid-tempo groove rich in rubbery slap bass and lolloping drumbeats. On the flipside you'll find the more obscure Mono Version, which interestingly feels a little weightier at the bottom end whilst allowing Laws' superb flute solos space to breathe.

Review: Having recently flexed his deep house muscles with a couple of fine EPs on Local Talk and City Fly, Alexander Lay-Far returns to the world of the disco re-edit with an excellent three-tracker on Basic Fingers. Pleasingly, his edits are sympathetic to the source material, and there's no hint of additional house kicks or needless effects. Arguably the highlight is "Saaba Dub", an excellent instrumental revision of an Afro-reggae classic from 1970s fusionists Light of Saba. He also dips his toe into dancefloor-friendly prog rock with the sprawling "Prime Climate", while "Quality Hours" works a spirtual jazz-funk groove - complete with Rhodes and flute solos aplenty - within an inch of its' life.

This expansive 12" single - his first for some time - contains more future classics, too, with lead cut 'Garde Fou' delivering the perfect blend of slap-bass, lo-fi drum machine hits, chiming synthesizer melodies, and sleazy French spoken word vocals. It comes accompanied by cheery and up-tempo bonus cut 'Summer Drive' and a wealth of remixes. Of these, we're really enjoying the kaleidoscopic electrofunk explosion that is the DJ Fiction remix, though the slicker, nu-disco-meets-deep house revision by El Kazed is also rather good.

The instrumentation of Lidell's original is mostly discarded, with Tiga crafting a sleek modern electro acid funk groove replete with scattergun synth stabs and killer drum rolls. The added emphasis placed on Costa's sultry breathing adds the requisite Prince-ness that Tiga's title alludes to. Bill Youngman's jerking mutation of album track "You Are Waking" rounds things off nicely.

Review: The new soft-spoken, hard-rocking group from Baltimore debuted their full length live show at the Wolf + Lamb Marcy Hotel this March. Following in the footsteps of greats like Nicolas Jaar and PillowTalk, they were the first invited guest in over 2 years to perform at the legendary Brooklyn proving grounds. Life on Planets is a duo that met in the studio lofts of their east coast hometown, whereby a collaboration fusing indie artrock and electronic music began to take shape. It was a pairing of two dramatically different personas, merging as one for a serendipitous, romantic sound that's now been signed to the Double Standard label. Life on Planets has also released music through Better on Foot, where the debut single 'Apollo' made waves in early 2014. The touring act features live vocals and guitar, backed by a dj/producer, dawning a long-awaited return to authentic songwriting in dance music.

Review: The Light Touches label and production crew brings their magic fingers to another series of hot and lesser known tunes and forgotten classics here, all with something of an Afro tinge. 'Vera' kicks off with a playful and funky disco sound that is riddled with Afro vocals and melodies that make you want to move. There is more energy to the bristling drums and flailing hits of 'Savage' which has plenty of effects and loops bring the energy then the final cut is 'We De Youth'. It's a loose-limbed and percussive workout with big horns leading the way. Glorious stuff.

Review: Light Touches Records continues its mission to shine a spotlight on rare gems, forgotten classics, and unknown grooves with their tenth release, helmed by Andrea Passenger. Digging deep into disco, afro, boogie and funk, Passenger delivers four expertly edited tracks. On the A-side, 'Roots' offers a driving disco tune for peak-time moments, while 'Psych Afro Roller' takes things into more adventurous territory. On the flip, 'New Dance' adds boogie flair with quirky synths, and 'Feel The Feeling' wraps it up with a moody, deeper vibeiall edited without overdubs for maximum authenticity.

Review: Unlike some edit imprints, Light Touches Records doesn't tamper with classics by adding unnecessary house beats or cheap production tricks, choosing instead to deliver scalpel style reissues whose dancefloor power comes from smart rearrangement and subtle re-EQing. The imprint's latest missive sticks to this tried-and-tested method, offering up a quartet of gospel-fired edits from Andrea Passenger. The producer begins with 'The Top (Higher)', a fine rearrangement of a righteous disco number, before successfully re-animating a bluesy soul shuffler ('Hear My Prey'). Elsewhere, 'Lil Longer' sees Passenger make merry with a Clavinet-heavy soul workout, while 'Giving It Up' is a straight-up, piano-sporting, choir-heavy treat.

Review: A recreational offshoot of the band Pleasure, Portland's Lights Out were led by their trumpeter Tonmy Collins as a way of staying musically exercised, pushing the envelope and getting a few local bookings on the side when Pleasure weren't on the road. Their sound started out as jazz fusion but they soon developed into a monstrously funky synth/-led funk rollercoaster. as vocalist Andy Stokes and guitarist Greg "Gee Mack" Dalton fronted the band.
The four tracks here were recorded as a demo for Solar Records in 1982 at Wave Sound Studios - a facility more used to housing punk acts such as The Wipers and The Rats - but the label 'fumbled' it and the band fellow apart soon after. Some 40 years on, the likes of 'Surrender Your Love' and 'Tonight' still sound fresh as the proverbial daisy, and likely to lure feet onto the dancefloor.

Review: Rhythm Section International is one of the scene's most influential and therefore respected labels. Its Shouts 2021 compilation has already got plenty of plaudits and for good reason. It is a diverse selection from sure to be star names such as Liluzu who opens with the slow and snaking house of 'Nano.' Elsewhere Nidia brings a richly melodic perspective to some loose broken beats on 'Celebration' and Klein Sage's 'The Sayers' is a superbly vibes, stripped back bit of jazzy basement house with finger clicks to die for and a great monologue that pokes fun at plenty.

Review: Lonnie Liston Smith made a lot of rather good records in the 1970s and '80s, though few are quite as heavy, intergalactic and intoxicating as "Space Princess". Initially recorded and released in 1978 as the opening track of his jazz-funk focused "Exotic Mysteries" album, the track - a suitably cosmic workout of epic proportions - quickly became a firm dancefloor favourite at both the Loft and Paradise Garage in New York thanks to its extended, Latin-tinged percussion breaks. Here the original DJ promo 12" gets the reissue treatment, with the peerless classic being accompanied by fellow "Exotic Mysteries" cut "Quiet Moments" - a gentle, samba-soaked shuffle through sunrise-ready jazz-funk bliss.

Way Out East

Ando Le
Review: Dr. Lloyd Miller, to give him his full title, has both been a student and player of jazz for many of his 72 years. He's won Composer's Guild awards, lectured and taught jazz at university level and even achieved his doctorate studying Persian music in 1972. He's also performed with the likes of Nat Adderly, Eddie Harris, Wynton Marsalis and Zoot Sims among others. With his A Lifetime in Oriental Jazz recently rediscovered by Jazzman, the label took the giant step of putting him in a studio with Malcolm Catto and Jake Ferguson of the Heliocentrics, who won much praise for their work on Mulatu Astatke's recent album. In just two hours, and despite having never met before, this quartet of songs were cut and in the can.
Not that they suffered from such constraints. The freedom and life captured on this release is palpable, most noticeably in the space given to the flute-like solos on opener "Electriconnee. The other players instinctively seem to know when to drop out and give Miller room, before joining in again on drums and double-bass. "Way Out East" is perhaps the most conventional work here, a straight piano-led vamp led by Miller, while "Gol E Gandom" clearly benefits from his years of dedication to Eastern scales which come out in force toward the end of the tune. "Ando Le" sees the addition of a zither-like instrument to the party, with the piano lines joining in and matching the eerie melody after a while. The contribution of Catto and Ferguson can't be praised enough, and they respond to Miller's lead with aplomb. Jazzman also deserve serious props for making this happen and getting this underrated titan of jazz into a studio at his ripe old age.

Review: Applied Arts party promoter and Cashmere Radio co-founder Ed Longo has spent much of the last 12 months criss-crossing Europe for recording sessions with a wide array of jazz-leaning musicians. The result is "The Other Fantasy", a debut mini-album that's said to be, "conceptualized around the quest for otherness in the schizophrenia of the digital age". Regardless of the concept, the resultant music is rarely less than magical, with Longo and his collaborators effortlessly joining the dots between jazz-funk, fusion, boogie and '80s soul. Highlights are plentiful, from the Dayton style early '80s jazz-funk perfection of "Love On The Line" and drowsy new age ambient/jazz fusion of "Arcadian Dream", to the synthesizer-powered '80s smoothness of "A Palm In The Closet" and horizontal bliss of "Trouble In Paradise".

Review: Arthur Russell made many fine records during his all-to-brief lifetime, though few are quite as fun, funky and freewheeling as 1980's 'Is It All Over My Face', the first single from his Loose Joints project with Steve D'Acquisto. Originally released at the tail end of the disco era and heavily influenced by the no-wave and punk-funk scene in downtown NYC, the track delivers a fittingly loose-limbed take on disco laden with attractive instrument solos, percussion-laden dancefloor breakdowns and vocals that are alternately inspired and unruly. This reissue boasts both of the original 12" mixes: the much-loved, funk-fuelled 'Female Version' and the raw and raucous 'Male Version', where Russell and D'Acquisto share lead vocals.

Review: Loose Shus' music has been described as "synth pop-electro meets '70s cop / horror movie soundtracks," - or should we say John Carpenter and Goblin-inspired. The San Franciscan producer delivers his first transmission since 2009 with a five-track EP of squiggly, electronically produced disco and funk. "Angeles" sounds like something that would compliment a night time drive scene from a late-'80s remake of Saturday Night Fever, while "Ladies" suites a slow-motion dancefloor dream sequence. "Saturation" sees synth leads sing like birds over an acidic bassline and other sprinklings of cosmic nostalgia and tribal percussion, while "Hangs Up" provides the first sign of vocals, with the slightest of Kraftwerk touches. "Screwdriver" then completes the EP with some casual e-funk.

Review: When it comes to offering up authentically funk-fuelled, revivalist disco-funk treats, former crate digger to the stars turned re-editor and producer Lord Funk has an impressive track record. One of his most sought-after releases is 2018's colourful "Knock Me Out EP", so it's no surprise to see it being given the reissue treatment two years on. There's much to admire, from the early Sugarhill Records-sampling boogie/p-funk fusion of opener "Blow Your Mind", to the talkbox-sporting P-funk revivalism of "Knock Me Out" (seemingly a reissue of a lesser-known kaleidoscopic synth-funk gem from the early-to-mid '80s), and the rather brilliant, Prince style electrofunk headiness of closing cut "Do It (If U Like)".

Change Your Mind (feat Bernard Fowler - instrumental - Tribute To Larry Levan) (5:08)
Review: Tucked away on Louie Vega's fantastic - and vast - Expansions in the NYC album were a handful of tributes to disco legends Patrick Adams and Larry Levan. This double-pack brings those tributes to the floor. Vega opens with his Elements of Live band cover of Sine's Patrick Adams-produced 1978 B-side 'Chimi', turning the four-minute cut into a driving-but-bouncy, near 14-minute disco epic rich in restless bass, attractive vibraphone solos and spacey synths. On 'Change Your Mind', which is presented in both full vocal and instrumental forms, Vega recruits the voice of the Peech Boys, Bernard Fowler, and turns down a sparse, heavily electronic workout reminiscent of Larry Levan's early '80s mixes. It's genuinely great, as is the DJ Spinna-sporting, hybrid disco/organic house cover of Adams' classic 'Atmosphere Strut'. In a word: essential!

Review: Anyone with even the smallest interest in disco and boogie will have heard Unlimited Touch's 1980 classic 'I Hear Music In The Streets'. It's a stone-cold killer that should be approached with caution. Louie Vega, of course, is respectful, and these versions are not remixes but rather re-makes, with the Masters at Work man being joined in the studio by all manner of guest musicians and vocalists - including original members of Unlimited Touch. The standout version is the near 11-minute A-side 'Touch Mix', an all-live post-disco version rich in classic disco bass, guitars, electric piano keys and spacey chords. The short-ish 'NYC Expansions Dub' cans the vocals and emphasises the various instrument solos, while the 'LV Classic Boogie Mix' is an almost note-for-note remake of the 1980 original.

Hot Love
Review: A beautiful repress that celebrates Nigeria and America's contributions to funk music, "Move!" is taken from Eno's 1982 album Living In The USA. Taking the rudiments of his African schooling, the drummer/guitarist/singer turns his hand to early rap on "Move!" over a sleazy funk beat that shimmers with minute echoes of highlife deep in the background. "Hot Love" follows up this fine fusion with a more upbeat 80s pop boogie focus. Big bass and reverbed vocals, it's going to sound great on your next dancefloor.
