Review: Electronic soul innovator Liv.e followed up her acclaimed Girl In The Half Pearl with PAST FUTUR.e last year, and it's now dropping on vinyl. The surprise seven-track project was made in just 24 hours and announced via a post on X. It's a lo-fi synthwave collection that betrays her genre-defying instincts and trades neo-soul smoothness for raw, hallucinatory energy. She bellows like a dancehall toaster and delivers fragmented narration over fuzzy, pulsing synths that echo Gang Gang Dance's experimental spirit. Is it an EP, album, or mixtape? It doesn't matter-PAST FUTUR.e is an unfiltered transmission from one of r&b's most inventive voices, and it's wildly unpredictable.

Master Peace Vol 1
Master Peace Vol 2
Review: Another dug-out dispatch from Tokyo's most diligent soul surgeon. This latest 7" distills veteran editor Loftsoul's flair for unearthing overlooked grooves and flipping them into low-slung, floor-ready burners. Side A stretches a sweet, previously under-the-radar soul cut into a strut-ready salivation, while the flip dips into hazier jazz-funk moorings: crisp drum breaks, warm Rhodes, slow-cooked syncopation. With subtle EQ and caressing lowpass warmth, we hear it's not about maximal intervention; it's about knowing where to put the scalpel. The latest in a long-running series, it's certainly an outlier find for record-bin archaeologists.

Review: Lord Byron's sixth album is a real standout in his discography and another trademark fusion of Southern rap's silky essence with the introspective depth of slowed-down, chopped-and-screwed beats. Produced by Ben Hixon of Dolfin Records (which is dropping a ton of great records right about now, by the way) A Portrait of Fyodor on Fire shows off Byron's versatile delivery as he seamlessly blends rapid-fire verses with the hypnotic rhythms of DJ Screw's influence. Collaborations with RPBGV further enrich the sound with new layers of complexity and innovation all white drawing inspiration from diverse sources for subtle inspiration that makes for a Texan-infused world of introspection and rhythm.

Just A Lil' Lovin (unreleased Exclusive instrumental) (4:01)
Review: As championed by DJ Koco......Mukatsuku Records keeps the spotlight on Japan once more here with a fresh 7" from SMOKIN' the JAZZ, a jazz-hip-hop trio made up of Sugames Japon on piano, guitarist Shu Fujiyama and NOBUdaDREAD, who is a turntable wizard. They've been working together since 2018 via their own Loud Minority Productions imprint and here they keep it deep and seductive with two laid-back, jazz-soaked instrumental hip-hop covers full of warmth and plenty of musical finesse. 'Gypsy Woman' is a delightfully gentle groove with conversational horns while an exclusive instrumental of 'Just A Lil Lovin' on the B-side is full of soulful, head-nodding goodness tailored for jazz heads, beat lovers and crate diggers alike.

Review: WA electronica duo Odesza have been watching Severance... have you? 'Music To Refine To: A Remix Companion To Severance' manifests as a seven-track EP reimagining Theodore Shapiro's score for the hit Apple TV series, the series which takes the 21-Century fixation on the idea of work-life balance to lugubrious extremes. The three-time Grammy nominees bring their signature synth-dance to the sampled atmosses of Severance, transforming Shapiro's eerie, coporatocratic sound motifs into wicked electronica abtsractions. Just as we're not quite sure what we're doing when we sit down to work at our desks, this officially Apple sanctioned release by the pair mirrors the simulacrum-similarities between commissioned remix culture and the in-out social sanctions of the fictive Lumon Corporation.

Review: Brit soul legend Omar's new work finds him in full command of his craft, gracefully vaulting through decades of soul, funk and jazz with a sound that feels both grounded in history and refreshingly modern. His collaborations - from Paul Weller's understated elegance to Giggs' streetwise energy - highlight his remarkable versatility, yet it's his own magnetic voice that pulls everything together. The arrangements are lush, rich with organic instrumentation and tinged with Caribbean warmth, offering a sound palette that's as riveting as it is all-consuming. Tracks like 'There's Much Love In The World' reflect the timeless optimism that runs through Omar's music, celebrating unity while reminding us of the power of soulful connection. Despite the star-studded line-up of guests, this release is unmistakably Omar's. His voice - distinctive and effortlessly smooth - remains at the heart of each song, whether he's trading verses with Raheem DeVaughn or harmonising with Ledisi's rich tones. The musical textures on display are just as varied, blending organic rhythms with electronic beats that never overwhelm the track's emotional core. Over time, Omar's musical approach has only become more layered and expansive, yet his unmistakable sound remains intactianchored in the originality that made him a key figure in modern soul and funk.

Review: Crafted over five years and during several of life's larger milestones and the woes of the pandemic, Infinity Mirrors is a deeply reflective jazz album exploring self-discovery through love, anxiety, hope and acceptance. It is the world of South London-born and raised multi-faceted producer, composer and DJ Hector Plimmer, who broke out a decade ago and here blends past and present experiences into a richly intimate world. The record is packed with collaborations with artists like Laura Misch, Andrew Ashong and Tawiah who help weave soulful melodies, ambient textures and jazz sensibilities. It's a profound and essential new take on jazz with a distinctive London edge.

Stefan Ringer - "PLGLY" (SR Big Room mix) (5:38)
Ben Hixon - "Feels Extremely Good" (8:05)
Ben Hixon - "My Family" (5:02)
Review: Texas-based Ben Hixon and Atlanta's Stefan Ringer collide on this new split EP for the increasingly vital Dolfin label. It is Ringer who starts with a tight, grinding groove on 'Moving Walkway' with spoken word snippets and kaleidoscopic synth sequences bringing a trippy and unusual energy to the menacing bass. His 'PLGLY' (SR Big Room mix) is then a heavy beatdown with synths that snap and crack while jazzy percussion and dark vocals bring extra character. Hixon's 'Feels Extremely Good' is a busy, off-balance mix of deep house drums and mind-melting synth refrains while 'My Family' offer a blissed-out and soul-drenched closer.

Rocket Science (main version) (3:36)
Rocket Science (instrumental version) (3:36)
Review: Bronx MC Rob-O returns with his first official solo release, more than two decades after his work with 90s underground crew INI. 'Rocket Science' is a tight, mid-tempo track produced by Paris-based Lex (de Kalhex), who also handled their 2012 collaboration. The beat is minimal but deliberate i a dusty loop with light keys and clean drums that hold space without distraction. Rob-O's vocal version plays it straight: a dense verse structure, clipped delivery and clear nods to Rakim-era cadences. The instrumental on the flip mirrors the vocal arrangement exactly, offering DJs and heads a clean alternate take. Nothing here feels overplayed. The mix by Parental is crisp, with the mastering by K-Def preserving warmth without softening the edges. This is a concise reintroduction to a voice with deep roots in New York's underground lineage.

The Hip-Hop Sound (2:24)
Review: Sofian label Soul Dynamite sling a skilful slice over our way, assuring us of the finely appraised editing work of Plovdiv producer Skill. Flat caps, ochre-rimmed glasses and dug crates seem to surround Skill like bees to honey, as the self-professed "pioneer in the purveyance of soulful, funky and jazzy hip-hop" makes evident his own expertise in a monosyllabic name. Two seconds in and we already know that 'Tribute To The Godfather' refers to none other than James Brown; we hear his many rhythm-perfect funk "huhs" striating the a fearsome breaks opener. We conclude on the sax-furloughed 'Danger', which steers hip-hoppier, and sacrifices the original vocals from Brown for an unknown sample source, though the King Of Soul's reign is not lost on it.

Review: This ten-year anniversary reissue revisits the 2015 release from Brooklyn MC Skyzoo, a deeply reflective and narratively rich project that explores the worldview of a 13-year-old growing up in his neighbourhood. It's a concept-driven record that still stands out for its lyrical clarity and storytelling, with production that balances polish and grit thanks to contributions from Illmind, Thelonious Martin and Seige Monstracity. Guest verses from Black Thought, Elzhi, Jadakiss and Bilal never overshadow Skyzoo's vision, but add depth and texture to his meditative tone. 'Luxury' remains a standout i a sharp, swaggering track that also marked Westside Gunn's first major feature i while cuts like 'The Moments That Matter' and 'Money Makes Us Happy' frame coming-of-age questions within lived detail. Not just a nostalgic reissue, but a reminder of how much weight Skyzoo carries when he stays close to home i thoughtful, precise and full of earned perspective.

As such the sounds blend Brazilian grooves, bass synths, live percussion, funky drums, guitar solos and vintage breaks with raw, experimental touches into an album full of life. The duo's signature sound is a fusion of their own DJing and music production and is ever more refined, having been crafted over the course of a year. Cinematic arrangements and a fresh approach to sampling make this another great chapter in this duo's musical story.

Review: California producer Space Ghost teams up with South Carolina-based singer Teddy Bryant for a sun-soaked ode to late 80s and early 90s soul. The record opens with the silky swing of 'Some Things Last Forever', giving way to lush, G-Funk-laced grooves like 'Majestic Fantasies' and club-focused cuts such as 'Unconditional (Club Mix)'. Bryant's vocals glide over Space Ghost's plush instrumentation, with tracks like 'Cheer Me Up' and 'Ultimate Love' channelling UK street soul and the balladry of classic r&b. 'Shine' and 'Ultimate Love', both featuring Morgan, add extra emotional weight. The pair clearly draw from a shared love of Teddy Riley, Jam & Lewis and DeVante Swing, but there's a lightness here that feels rooted in the present too-music that remembers the past without ever getting stuck in it.

Review: A nostalgic, dust-flecked time capsule from Virginia's Stimulator Jones, this new release compiles beats made between 1999 and 2005, from basement loops to teenage sample wizardry. Long before the Stones Throw co-sign, Sam Jones was already mimicking RZA's rhythmic sleight of hand on 'Ill Feeling' and chopping bossa drums into delay-blurred scratch collages on 'Chill Scratch'. 'Ghost Gospel' flips a 3/4 gospel sample into 4/4 bounce, while 'Pharoah Jones' channels Yesterday's New Quintet in lo-fi, multi-tracked form. 'Do Not Adjust' pulls from French library records, while 'Cool Green Trees' is a smoked-out DJ Shadow homage with Spiderman scratches and deep-filtered drums. There's a sense of raw isolation here-looping alone in Roanoke, pre-YouTube, letting second-hand funk records be the guide. It's not revisionist boom bap; it's archival, full of youthful intensity and grainy charm. From 'Welcome Aboard The Starship' to 'Keep On Runnin', every track is a piece of an obsessive teenage puzzle. An intimate, unguarded document of early beat-making curiosity-handled with care, finally let loose.

Even After All (SuckaSide remix) (4:42)
Gorilla Witness (4:48)
Review: A nice mix of funk, hip-hop and reggae influences go into the melting pot on the latest SuckaSide, with 'Even After All' proving to be a laid back, blunted jam that's backed up with some hard hitting, sturdy beat manouevres. On the edgier sounding flip, meanwhile, a female MC spits with impressive ferocity while a lovely warm - and somewhat familiar - analogue-edge loop works its magic. Both are key components for use at different points in the jam, some badly needed heavy weaponry that Donald Trump can't withdraw from service here.

Review: It's always nice to hear new music from Towa Tei, who will forever be revered for his work with 90s dance fusionists Deee-Lite. His 13th studio album shows he's lost none of his adventurous spirit, with quirky melodies, chopped samples, and imaginative collaborations galore. AH!! is testament to Tei's knack for assembling unexpected parts into something stylish and, well, just a little wackadoodle. With contributions from the likes of Takkyu Ishino, Verbal, Yukihiro Takahashi and Haruomi Hosono, AH!! plays like a mixtape from an alternate pop universe. Over 30 years since he and his bandmates tore the roof off the dance underground, AH!! lands as a marker of Towa Tei's staying power and serves as the final part of a loose trilogy that began with EMO and LP. A milestone release, then, from a shape-shifting producer who's always been more interested in what's next than what's expected.

Review: After declaring his retirement in 1996 with Gettin' It, it turned out that Too $hort couldn't really stay away from the game. In 1999, he returned with Can't Stay Away, his 11th studio album and one recorded in Atlanta with Southern influences folded into his signature West Coast Bay Area sound. Produced by Jazze Pha, Jermaine Dupri and Erick Sermon and with features from 8Ball & MJG, Scarface, E-40 and others, it's another example of Too $hort's versatility. It also introduces his Nation Riders, a collective of up-and-coming rappers signed to his new label, in a record full of pimp tales and classic $hort storytelling.

Review: Freestyle deliver a curate collection of overlooked UK street soul and boogie from the 80s and early 90s, with standout tracks from the label's recent 12" reissue programme. The collection houses a special mid-90s gem from Manchester's Gold In The Shade, with accompanying photos by Andrew Holligan and liners from Kevin Le Gendre. The sleeve was shot in Hackney, East London, where a vibrant street culture flourished despite the strictures of the Thatcher era. British music evolved at the same time, as larger ensembles shrank in favour of smaller groups with synths, letting boogie's smooth, bass-led sound find life. This transition, alongside the rise of street soul, budded and blossomed a uniquer blend of indie and studio projects, imprinting lastingly on the culture, now repackaged and again represented in The Way U Make Me Feel.

Review: A new compilation gathering a wide-reaching group of female and non-binary artists working across genre, language and geography, with contributions from Lagos, Brooklyn, London, Hong Kong and beyond. The sound is as varied as the cast i from the jagged grime of TeeZandos and MC Yallah to the glassy electronics of Yaeji and COUCOU CHLOE, it's consistently direct, inventive and loaded with character. Sudan Archives and Yaya Bey bring nuance and clarity, while Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dizzy Fae balance melodic force with raw edges. Aunty Rayzor and Vanessa the Finessa provide standout energy, with rising names like Nira, Queenie and Warrior Queen pushing things in new directions. There's no single through-line here beyond self-possession i each artist holds their own sonic identity and leans into it fully. It's a new release with a sharp ear for contrast and range, reflecting not a trend but a network of voices already shaping what comes next. Wide open in sound but tight in curation, this one's well worth spending time with.

Review: The first Wu-Tang release to feature all nine living members in over a decade, this new full-length is a reminder that when aligned, the Staten Island collective still operate on a level of their own. The production is raw and cinematic i heavy with martial arts samples, bassline grime and dusty soul flips i while the verses come sharp, tight and unshowy. No gimmicks, just business. 'Sucker Free City' and 'Mandingo' come in swinging, full of tight drum programming and rugged, overlapping verses. 'Roar Of The Lion' and 'Shaoilin Vs Lama' lean into the classic kung-fu mythology, with a sense of pace that recalls their earliest work. 'Cleopatra Jones' and 'Dolemite' are funk-fuelled standouts, where the crew's storytelling and timing land in full form. 'Let's Do It Again' and 'Trouble-Man' close with a tone of reflection that cuts through the grime. It's a new release, but also a reunion that doesn't feel like a legacy act i more like a sharpened return. No attempt to modernise, no need to. Just nine distinct voices, still bouncing off each other with control and character. A serious addition to the catalogue i and one for the heads.

Review: Tea Breaks comes through with the goods again here in the form of a killer hip-hop hit that comes from the legendary East Coast scene back in the mid-90s when, for our money, it was turning out its most vital artists and albums. 'CREAM (feat R & ID)' has familiar dark soul energy with strumming strings running across its face, dusty and deep beats and iconic vocals. On the flip of this tidy 7" is an instrumental version that strips things back to the core ingredients and lets your mind do the rest.

Kingmaker
Review: Xzibit first put his talents on full display - no glass case needed - right as the moment that the 90s LA rap underground scene spread its wings. He broke out shortly after this underground comeup in 1996 with At The Speed Of Life, led by the moody slow-burn single 'Paparazzi'. His new record Kingmaker, however, brings, after a decade of remission from the limelight, a full 20 track's worth of deal-ready proofs of liquidity, guile and acumen, with Xzibit casting himself as a "kingmaker". (It) "has nothing to do with him being royalty or sitting on the throne and being a part of some kind of hierarchy", but a sign that he wanted to share his knowledge of "the good, the bad, the ugly, the ups and downs" he's faced throughout his life and career that he attributes to "making him successful". 'Play This At My Funeral' leads the offensive with hollowed out gumption and politically neutral, reminiscent bars, setting the tone with the following sentiment: don't mess with me, I've seen too much.

Review: Hailing from Marseille, Zar Electrik conjure a hypnotic synthesis of North African rhythm, West African instrumentation and contemporary electronics. Their debut full-length surges with ritualistic energy-'Berma soudan' leads with elastic gumbri grooves, while 'Bala dima' overlays call-and-response chants with pulsing low-end and dubby atmospheres. 'Koyo' anchors the set in driving, gnaoui-inflected trance, propelled by electric kora and pitch-shifted vocal snippets. Elsewhere, 'Sahrane Lile' is drenched in oud melancholia, and 'Chouf enour' spirals into eight minutes of slow-building, ambient-rooted psych. Shorter sketches like 'Interlude 51' and 'Choukrane likoum' offer breathers between the denser percussion workouts. Drawing from wedding music, souk rhythms and Berber funk with evident care, the trio land somewhere between festival catharsis and basement heat. It's not simply fusion-it's groove as inheritance, filtered through FX units and Mediterranean sun.
