3D & Robert Owens - "Known Love" (7:51)
Olivier Giacomotto & Quivver - "Snailblazer" (6:40)
Dave Seaman & Hernan Cattaneo - "Napkin Knowledge" (7:28)
Argia & Jepe - "Salitre" (7:38)
Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

La Pina Madura (part 1) (4:52)
La Pina Madura (part 2) (4:43)
Review: Abelardo Carbono must be one of Colombia's most legendary artists, particularly for championing the sound of "champeta", a guitar-led style that has come to represent the South American country and its music. The Names You Can Trust imprint comes through with a glorious one-tracker by Carbono himself, alongside his 'Grupo' and, unsurprisingly, the masterful modern production of Quantic. "La Pina Madura" is a beast of a track, all built with percussive glory and the fiery South American zest that is made all the more effective by Quantic's post-production work. Slightly off-kilter and irregular in its shapes, this is undoubtedly a 7" single that you will want to bust out this summer. Blazing hot!

Review: If you're unaware of Aston Harvey's influence and legacy across the entire rave spectrum do yourself a favour, press play and do a little reading. From his role in the Blapps Posse to being Ray Keith's early engineer to his decades in The Freestylers, Aston's DNA is integral to rave culture just as much as Suburban Base is. And here are four fine examples why. Teaming up with DJ Quicklung, each cut his hard with that classic jungle breakbeat sound. Highlights include the dubby tension of 'The Hangman' and the pure unabashed euphoria of 'Moving On'. Oof!

Review: Long-standing collaborators Paul Bowyer (aka Quiet) and Ben Hudson (aka Brain Rays) are back once again and going forces to serve up some brain boggling new jungle sounds. First out of the blocks is 'Slacker' with its twisted synths and taught, bing drums all taking you ever high on waves of euphoria. 'Tigress Canisha' is a watery, aqueous cut with dripping droplets and minimal rhythms over popping drums. 'Ataru Flip' then pulse back just a little to a slightly deeper vibe, but still with relentless form energy and yelping vocal samples. 'Creeps' (Coco Bryce remix) is another glorious one from the always on form Dutchman.

Disco/Re-Edits
Brandye - "How Long" (4:04)
Queen Samantha - "Take A Chance" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:59)
Review: More from dusty-fingered don DJ Muro's Digura edit series. This time round, he's focused on two fabulous but often overlooked disco gems. On the A-side it's all about Brandye's punchy, funk-fuelled, disco era crossover soul cover of Ace's much-loved 1974 sing-along 'How Long' - a sublime interpretation that's easily the best version of the much-covered song we've heard. Basically, it's an energetic, impassioned version of an end-of-night classic; what's not to like? Over on the flip, Muro takes his rusty scalpel to Queen Samantha's largely instrumental, Italo-disco classic 'Take a Chance' - a spacey, synth-powered chunk of peak-time chug that has long been championed by some of the World's most knowledgeable disco DJs.

Review: Drum & bass giants Hospital Records get involved with this year's Record Store Day by serving up a limited white vinyl that also serves as further 25th anniversary celebrations. This is on top of the huge 25 rack album that came back in March and features a load more essential remixes, reworks, VIPs and covers of NHS drum & bass classics. Together they serve as a fine snapshot of the label's past, present and future with Camo & Krooked, S.P.Y, Kings Of The Rollers, Lynx, Think Tonk, Kessler, Villem and The Caracal Project all coming correct.

Balearic/Downtempo
Alive (Conrad instrumental) (5:22)
Alive (Conrad D & B mix) (5:04)
Alive (Conrad Vacant Lot remix) (6:18)
Review: Nine years has passed since Phil Mison's Cantoma project released 'Alive', a typically sun-soaked Balearic outing featuring contributions from Quin Luke under his alternative Bi Ji Ling alias. Mison has now decided to offer up a swathe of new reworks of the track, with his old pal Conrad McDonnell of the Idjut Boys at the controls. In typical Idjuts fashion, McDonnell delivers three wildly different variations on a theme. The A-side 'Conrad's Instrumental' version is a dreamy chunk of Latin-tinged dub disco/Balearic fusion that adds a hallucinatory shimmer to Mison's original production, while the 'Conrad's D&B Mix' is a killer, Idjuts-style drum dub built around bass, percussion and effects aplenty. Arguably best of all though is the 'Vacant Lot' remix, a dreamy, spaced-out, stretched-out chunk of wayward early morning dancefloor psychedelia.

Monsieur Mercredi - "Ego" (4:48)
Quidam - "Double Trouble" (6:42)
Quidam - "Lebsa" (5:52)
Review: More from the Paris-based Mercredi collective, whose distinctive take on electronic music - first showcased via a solo single from key member Quidam last year - draws on a wealth of disparate musical influences. For proof, check out the A-side, where Chahan's 'Jungle (Pile Ou Faune Mix)' - a quirky but rather good blend of deep house, 80s zouk beats and glassy-eyed synth-pop sounds - is followed by the soca-goes-street soul sweetness of Monsieur Mercredi's 'Ego'. Quidam takes over on the flip, first offering up the classic house flourishes, trance builds and bustling beats of the acid-splashed 'Double Trouble', before getting all exotic on the Mali-meets-early-Massive Attack headnodder 'Lebsa'.

Nicola Cruz - "Tu Recuerdo" (5:02)
FE - "Tarde O Temprano" (4:55)
Quixosis - "Vibras" (4:05)
NTFL - "Vacio" (3:24)
Review: Calypso are back with another clutch of exciting mavericks orbiting the weirder end of the contemporary club spectrum. There are minimal wave influences to be tacitly detected on Nicola Cruz's "Tu Recuerdo" as well as kind of stripped back acid freakiness, while in FE's "Tarde O Temprano" there's even more gritty, industrial tinged bite in the billowing surges of machine rhythms. Quixosis takes some wonderfully lilting traditional percussion and gives it a freaky treatment which makes for the kind of slow jam Weatherall would have wielded with aplomb. NTFL finishes this ear-snagging compilation off with the plaintive, Dembow-tinted "Vacio".

Cabanelas - "Sambu Y Los Morsas" (6:17)
Z@p - "Yeartail" (6:10)
Justin Drake & Quinn Whalley - "Slack-Strobe" (7:55)
Review: The Alt label hits its second record with a sterling cast of wayward techno bods in tow. Things fire up in a tough and trippy manner as Delta wrings all kinds of tricky noises out of his gear and keeps the bass brooding in the low end, but hold tight for a perfectly 90s chord progression in that pad line. Cabanelas has a bleepy mission on 'Sambu Y Los Morsas' which flits between creepy passages of tension and acid tweaking drops. Z@p keeps things melancholic while adhering to the record's over-arching old-skoool outboard vibe, and then Justin Drake and Quinn Whalley sign the record off with a slice of proto trance for the deepest of 90s-tinted dancefloor reveries.

Duve - "Bahadir" (Quiet Village remix) (10:21)
Quiet Village - "Track 2" (7:27)
Review: The new Rekids sub-label, Pyramids Of Mars, drops its fourth EP and it's a collaborative effort on behalf of Matt Edwards - also known as Radio Slave - and Joel Martin under their Quiet Village moniker, and Blank Slate's Duve. The latter only appears on the credits as the producer of the original mix to "Bahadir", a luscious house track that is stripped-down and dubbed-out by the duo; if you're into Rhythm & Sound then this will surely please your ears. The duo are back on the flip with "Track 2", a meditative chill-out tune with a slow tempo and slow-ticking background percussion. Hot and recommended!

Unaesthetic Gossips EP
Cat: SERIALISM 002. Rel: 15 Jan 08

Techno
Ekkohaus - "A Storm"
Marco Shuttle - "Manicure"
Queen Atom - "Mattos"
Rudolf - "Una Matina Especiale"
Review: Hot on the heels of the successful introductory EP on Serialism comes the second installment on the label: 'Unaesthetic Gossips EP' which once again offers some delightful grooves that will be appreciated both by the dance floor crowd and home listeners. Nicely starting off the EP is Berlin based Greek producer Ekkohaus - on his second tune for the label with a very Detroit-influenced track, massive elements of Groove and Funk, exploding half-way through and teasing the listener as the snare/clap comes in on the half beat. This tune will be largely enjoyed by both techno and house fanatics. Next one on the list is Italian Marco Shuttle, offering a slightly different approach with his deep, long & repetitive journey of soft synth chords and elegant elements that remind us of Cadenza releases, providing a perfect tune for the after-hours or stylish warm up. On the flip we find ourselves with a huge tune from Queen Atom, perfect for the peak time hours in those big packed club rooms: a combination of Detroit-esque Funk, with trippy back melodies and percussive 909 toms waving through the atmosphere, resulting in a dark yet groovy slow-tempo techno piece. Strikingly finishing off the EP is Argentinean artist Rudolf, already known for his previous releases on STHLM, who delivers an enormous experimental track with intensely layered vocal melodies: Eerie, ghostly and combined with many industrial aspects, the result is an immense bubbly, watery track that will indisputably drive clubbers insane throughout the globe.

Review: Following El Buho's "Tributaries" remix album, Wonderwheel offer up this choice 7" featuring two distinct cuts not found on the main record. First up is El Buho's take on grand master Quantic, working with the storied producer's considerable knowledge of Latin music to create a remix of "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" already well loved on globally minded dancefloors. On the flip comes the never before released El Buho version of Nickodemus and Femina's "Inmortales" - a fierce, drum-tastic version to get bodies shaking down.

Review: UK label Punchline returns for its fifth edition which presents sounds existing at the intersection of UK garage and minimal house. On the A-side you've got Gibsby perfectly demonstrating this style on his weirdo cut 'Pranksters Studio Gangsters' while Hoodrats deliver the funky, swing-fuelled and lo-sung cut 'Greasy Chops'. Mihai Popoviciu - "Nimph" (6:08)
Review: After two decades entertaining dancers in Santiago, Chile, the Rock Tha House crew have decided to launch their own label. With local legend Camilo Gil and Mexico City-based Mario Flores at the helm, the imprint aims to showcase Chilean talent - though this compilation style debut EP features cuts from artists based all over the world. Nima Gorji sets the tone with 'Get Me Out Of Here', a hypnotic and mind-altering fusion of minimal house sparsity and deliciously psychedelic electronics, before Quenum delivers a typically Chilean blend of oddball house drums, weird noises and Villalobos style effects. Over on side B, Carlo Gambino's 'The Goddess' is a tech-tinged chunk of deep house haziness, while Mihai Popovicu's 'Nimph' is a classical-sounding chunk of ultra-spacey tech-house deepness.

Johnny Hammond - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Quasimode - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Review: New York imprint Voodoo Down expand operations with the launch of sister label Rock N Roll Records, a platform dedicated to "left-field dance jams and old, dusty synth electronics". The debut release sees Gregory Zifcak, one half of Eat Tapes and a resident at Brooklyn party Tunnel Vision along with Ital and Lori Napolean, step out with his debut solo release under the Total Recall riffing Hauser Quaid banner. Despite the aforementioned stated intent of the new label, there is a discernible beat to much of the music on this four track Meli Gala 12", not least the hypnotic title track which features some memorably indecipherable vocals from Zuzu Neku. Do check B Side track "Onna-Bugeisha" for a similar primitive and paranoid vibe to last year's Streetwalker LP for Cititrax.

Once in a while, they like to put out some collaborative works and it's time for the second instalment of their Family Horror compilations. Plenty of fire and new faces on this one, and we're particularly digging Hiver's "Egeo", a cinematic opener with an aqueous sort of feel to it, "Kokobay" by QY and the acidic "Track 6" by Perm. Wild and multi-faced.

Hot Water Music - "Undertow" (2:43)
Review: A 12" split meeting of the minds between two equally iconic alt rock punk-lifers, this EP brings together Gainesville, Florida's Hot Water Music and New York City's Quicksand (brainchild of Gorilla Biscuits hardcore hero and Rival Schools emo-grunge auteur Walter Schreifels), covering each other's classic tracks with renditions of 'Fazer' from the Quicksand 1993 debut LP Slip and 'Free Radio Gainesville' off of Hot Water Music's 1999 third full-length No Division. Filling out the tracklist are the unreleased 'Supercollider' which marks the first new cut of Quicksand material since 2021's Distant Populations, and the b-side 'Undertow', originally recorded during sessions from Hot Water Music's latest 2024 LP Vows. With simple cover art featuring Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan on one side, and Quicksand's Alan Cage on the other, it perfectly summarises this playful, mutual celebration of one another's work, some new, some old, all great.

Hot Water Music - "Fazer" (3:13)
Quicksand - "Free Radio Gainesville" (2:34)
Quicksand - "Supercollider" (2:48)
Hot Water Music - "Undertow" (2:43)
Review: A meeting of minds between two seminal punk-lifer alternative rock acts of the 90s, this split EP showcases Gainesville, Florida's Hot Water Music and New York City's Quicksand (the brainchild of Gorilla Biscuits hardcore veteran and Rival Schools emo-grunge pioneer Walter Schreifels), covering some of each other's classic tracks with a rendition of 'Fazer' from Quicksand's legendary 1993 debut full-length Slip complimented by a reimagining of 'Free Radio Gainesville' from Hot Water Music's career height 1999 third album No Division. Also featured are the unreleased track 'Supercollider' which marks the first new piece of Quicksand material since the release of 2021's Distant Populations, and 'Undertow', a B-side taken from the recording sessions from Hot Water Music's 2024 Vows LP. A respectful, playful collection illustrated succinctly by the cover art featuring Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan on one side, and Quicksand's Alan Cage on the other.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
Allysha Joy - "Better" (Kaidi Tatham remix) (5:36)
Quiet Dawn & Sarah Williams White - "One By One" (4:27)
Takuya Kuroda - "Fade" (KEARL remix) (5:20)
Teotima - "But I Can't" (K15 remix) (4:35)
Review: Earlier this month, First Word Records dropped an epic, digital-only compilation in which members of the label's large family of artists either collaborated with or remixed each other. This 12" boasts four of the collection's undoubted highlights. The EP begins with a simply stunning Kaidi Tatham remix of Allysha Joy's soul-jazz treat 'Better' - think deep broken beat meets liquid jazz-funk and sultry neo-soul - and ends with a fiercely sub-heavy and surprisingly spaced out K15 broken beat rework of Teotima's 'But I Can't'. Sandwiched in between you'll find a jazz-funk-goes-bruk re-wire of Takuya Kuroda's 'Fade' by KEARL (that's K15 and Darkhouse Family's Earl Jeffers) and a wonderful fusion of squelchy synth-jazz and broken beat courtesy of Quiet Dawn and Sarah Williams White.

Review: Leipgig's QC Records is back this week with QC Passed 3, featuring a bunch of artists all very familiar to the label. On the A side of you have Karo with the electrifying, neon-lit house of 'Not A Toy' followed by Marvin Uhde aka Qnete's expression in deep, late-night mood music on '2072'. Over on the flip, he collaborates once again with Carmel (Reece Walker) on the uplifting 'Vierfecta' featuring a mesmerising chord progression that just has to be heard. Finally, and in a surprising turn, M. Ruffing serves up some liquid drum 'n' bass vibes on the FM and acid-laced stepper 'Fischtreppe'.

Mr Beatnick - "Hold On To Your Dreams"
Iron Curtis - "Love Commitment"
Robert Oh - "Blush"
Review: Session Victim's Retreat label delivers a heavyweight fifth instalment of the Treats various artist series, opened by the stutter-whistling and good vibes of Jamie Lloyd's "Spiro Hustle". Session Victim's contribution is "Much Too Strong" as it's dope, deep and jammin'. Johannes Albert's provides the calypso funk as does Mr Beatnick, only in a more of an electronic fashion, plus a bit of acid. Quarion brings his signature bleepy arpeggios to Retreat which follows on from Kim Brown's starry "I Am Batman". Iron Curtis, as we knew he would, provides a fuzzy, upbeat "Love Commitment" while Robert Oh ends on a hip hop, downtempo vibe with "Blush". One of this years best various artists releases so far!

Danny Byrd - "Soul Function" (7:02)
Review: Hospital reach for the reload as their collectable Classic Symptoms series continues with another blast from liquid past. And this one's especially a hoot; all taken from that sweet spot around the mid 2000s, every cut still sparkles with that raw sample-heavy vibe the label was best known for. Logistics' 'City Life' and its melancholy pianos take us back to his debut album in 2006, Total Science's Q Project went full on organ back in 2005 to tremendous effect on 'Obsession' while London Elektricity's 'Fast Soul Music' remains the blueprint for his signature to this day. Last but not least the seminal filtered fire-up 'Soul Function' from Danny Byrd. Old but liquid gold.

LV & Quarta 330 - "Hylo"
Suzuran - "Dong"
Review: Hyperdub brings together two of their label locals for two collaborative tracks on what is the thirty fourth release on Kode9’s famed imprint. here we see LV & Quarta 330 combine for the original production of "Hylo" and a remix of Dong’s "Suzuran". Legend has it that this collaboration was forged the day after the label’s 5th anniversary party last November. The alliance works a balanced level between the two producers by merging their different sounds, with Quarta 330’s 8-bit abstraction and melodic tendencies contrasting perfectly with the lush figures and shuffling rhythms of LV.

"Hylo" sees 8-bit melodies made from rebuilt gameboys and sonic bleeps weaved into the crunchy snap of a reverse drum beat and warm chords. The harmonic and beautiful breakdown takes us into peaceful territory courtesy of a simple motif before the pace picks back up and we continue on our stepping journey with more splattered drums. It is an energetic mix of brittle and lush sounds which seems to sum up how the pair complement each other so well.

Next up, they work together on a remix of Quarta’s own remix of Japanese producer, Dong’s "Suzuran". LV reconstructs the slurring space pop of the Japanese vocoder vocal melody into a remix that is constructed from syncopated drums and off key patterns of beep and bleeps. It creates a catchy but obscure sound as sweet melodies clash with shuffling beats.

This unlikely but attractive pairing has provided each other with a platform to successfully exchange relatively alien ideas and sounds. The unrestrained rawness of their work together both complements each others’ talent and provides yet another go-to release from Hyperdub.

Doris Monteiro - "Se Voce Quiser Mas Sem Bronquear" (3:00)
Quarteto Em Cy - "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" (2:45)
Review: Mr Bongo's Brazilian 45 series hits it's ninth gear with two region-defining slices of sun-kissed samba soul. Doris takes the lead with delicate frontage. Leading from the front, all instruments follow her cues and mirror each vocal flourish with mild big band cheekiness. The instantly distinctive "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" from sister quartet Quarteto Em Cy is a great twist on a Latin classic with its slightly rocky guitars and full bodied harmonies. Previously released in 1972, a return has been long overdue.

Review: Part duex of IM:LTD's "Junction 12" EP, here we find label stalwart Mortem and fresh face Quartz going head-to-head in a battle of bass. "Converter" is a sexy swinger with jazzy chords, a sprightly drum arrangement a heartbeat bassline that breathes organically. Meanwhile "Amour King" is a growling, Moving Fusion-style roller that sneers and snarls with a simple-but-deadly, teeth-bearing riff.

Quasar & Nova - "Witchcraft" (dub) (5:09)
Saule & Centauri - "Tyrant" (5:10)
Teffa & Sound Unknown - "Hide & Seek" (4:42)
Review: Dubstep doesn't get much deeper than the tunes on this meaty new Various Artists collection from 786. The title suggests it is the start of a new ongoing series, which is music to the ears of bass fiends everywhere. Mr K & DPRTNDRP kick off with 'Suppression,' with its menacing energy and churning hits, while Quasar & Nova team up for the excellent low end wobble and playful sense of funk that is deeply embedded in the rhythm of 'Witchcraft.' Saule & Centauri's 'Tyrant' is a pressurised cut with a freaky vocal and edgy synth stabs over woden hits. Sparse but atmospheric, it's just one of four killers here. The last is the drilling bass weight of Teffa & Sound Unknown's mystic 'Hide & Seek.' Great stuff.
