Cut over a single week in 1965, these five studio albums capture Chet Baker on the cusp of transformationinewly returned from Europe, his tone darker, his phrasing looser, yet unmistakably his. With George Coleman on sax and a fierce NYC rhythm section of Kirk Lightsey, Herman Wright and Roy Brooks, the sessions pulse with hard bop urgency. Tracks across Cool Burnin', Smokin' and Comin' On show Baker stripping back the polish of his West Coast period in favour of something more raw, human and soulfully fractured. Now remastered directly from the original mono tapes by Kevin Gray, the sound feels crisp and honestihighlighting both Baker's fragility and fire. An essential reissue that balances archival care with emotional immediacy and documents one of jazz's most mythic figures mid-unravelling.
