Review: Old-school jungle lives on through Minos, a UK producer channelling the rough-edged drive of 90s pirate radio on his latest for Jungle Slapperz. Punchy breaks and grimy low-end define these four stripped-down weapons, with enough swing and bite to work across new-gen and heritage sets alike. The raucous snap of 'Mr.clash' sets the tone, all rude edits and turbocharged momentum, while 'Love Tune' injects a splash of warmth with its filtered pads and romantic vocal licks. 'You&I' keeps things tightly coiled, its tension built from flickering amen fragments and a subtly teased bassline. 'Watch The Ride' closes the set with a knowing nod to era-defining mixtapes, trading in tension, swagger and grit. Nostalgic but not pastiche, Minos proves that jungle's golden DNA still has new futures to offer.

Review: The Kreuzbergkillers label kicks off in fine form with a split release from Sven Von Thulen and Spencer Parker, backed up by a remix from the mighty Shed. 'Body Music', as the title would suggest, sees Von Thulen indulging in a vintage strain of machine music where techno and EBM cross over into fiercely potent, physical club music. Shed takes a surgical approach to the track and creates his own artfully sliced and squashed techno workout. On the flip, Parker creates a feverish mood with looped up samples, discordant low end and more jack than a whole season of 24. Look out for the dub if you want the pressure in a more heads down style.

Review: This new 45rpm single on Humble Action includes the original version of 'Musical Healers' by Hummingbird as well as a remix by Aryeh Yah. The a-side version is a nice twisted dancehall cut with some hot stepping rhythms that sound like they could well have been sampled by The Streets at some time. It's a future sounding cut even now with its sleek synth leads. It's a real trip too at over eight minutes long, and the remix is no less adventurous but has a more heavy low end.

Review: The young drum & bass label Monkey Business closes out a fine 2024 with one more killer 12". It's another one that draws on various artists for four tracks that are all four-way collabs. First up is 'Monkey Face' which is a twitchy, electrifying cut with whirring synth sounds, crisp drums and raw snares. 'Good Morning' has a mad lead synth and some double-speed piano chords for happy rave vibes and 'White Town Murderer' twists a pp classic into a raucous fusion of wild drum & bass madness. 'Primate X' shuts down with eye-waveringly caustic sound designs.

Marshall and the package also features the legendary Big Youth who delivers the powerful 'Sufferers Cry' vocal in a single striking take- he manages to capture raw emotion with seemingly effortless ease. Next to him, the track boasts an impressive lineup of talent including drums from Horseman, Steven Wright aka Marley on guitar, keys from Henry Holder, saxman Richard Doswell and David Fullwood on trumpet with Paul Kelly adding percussion next to Meroe "G" on vocals and bass. This is a deep, rootsy package crafted with care and spirit that demands to be pumped loud through your best amps.

Review: Hidden Collection is an anonymous and vinyl-only record label from somewhere within Russia. It promises to deal in deep, dusty and minimal house cuts from known sources and this debut missive is sure together plenty of people keen to find out more, or at least join the ride. Here's a wide range of style son show here within that framework, to the lo-fi shuffle and flickering soul of 'Sequoia' to the more dark and bass driven 'New Ham', fragment rhythms and malfunctioning machine sounds of 'Tamsyam' and loved up and blissed out deep house daydream that is 'Cool Down'. These are emotive and sketchy vignettes that leave you wanting more.
