Review: In fitting fashion for Sault, we've another surprise LP on our hands from the Inflo and Cleo Sol led collective. Sault's revolving door format is heard again in full saloon swing, doubling down on their knockout combo of elusiveness (every track title is an initialism) and creative spontaneity. Coming after a prolific but unconventional run - 2022 offered five albums made freely available for only five days - 10 indicates a return to a tighter focus, not abandoning the phonic plexuses and political undertones that have defined their work so far. Best on the record is the nymphlike, god fearing gospel jam 'L.U.' and the sculpted G-P-funk of 'K.T.Y.W.S.'

Review: Japanese jazz fusion continued to take off with Masayoshi Takanaka's fourth album, one that is admittedly referential to Brasilia and its native styles, yet which flaunts Takanaka's virtuosic playing, and put the recreative flair of Japanese players of styles like samba, bossa nova and prog-rock on the map. All instrumental, it marks a shift from prior album An Insatiable High (1977), which brought a relatively aerobic seven-track feel; Brazilian Skies is the trans-Indian holiday after the marathon, bringing lilting beachside hums and coconut claves to a multi-instrumental funk bonanza.

Review: Originally released in 1974 and now reissued on vinyl, this album transformed the legendary Byrd's career direction. After years as a hard bop heavyweight and collaborator with the likes of Art Blakey, Coltrane and Herbie Hancock, Byrd found commercial and creative renewal through his partnership with producers Larry and Fonce Mizell. The third album in their five-record run on Blue Note, this pushed their progressive sound to deeper, darker territory, riding a funkier, more introspective current than his previous albums. The title track remains a defining work, its hypnotic groove and haunting optimism making it a favorite of future hip-hop artists like J Dilla and A Tribe Called Quest. Byrd's trumpet glides with elegant restraint, weaving through Chuck Rainey's basslines and Gary Bartz's saxophone work. Mizell's signature synthesiser textures add a lush and cosmic layer. Tracks like 'Think Twice' and 'Design A Nation' are grounded in sophisticated funk minimalism, blending subtle vocal refrains with intricate instrumentation. The gentler moments like 'Rock and Roll Again' and 'I Love The Girl', explore a softer, more soulful style without losing their sense of forward motion. Though often dismissed at the time by jazz traditionalists, 'Stepping Into Tomorrow' is now rightly seen as a cornerstone of 70s fusion and rare groove.

Review: A pillar of 70s jazz-funk and soul, this landmark release from Los Angeles artist Roy Ayers still sounds impossibly fresh. Originally released in 1976, it marked a shift towards more mellow, groove-based songwritinga and remains one of the most influential entries in Ayers' vast discography. He centres the vibraphone across ten tracks, using it as both melodic guide and percussive spirit. 'Hey, Uh-What You Say Come On' sets out the blueprint with radiant optimism, followed by the smoky bounce of 'The Golden Rod' and 'Keep On Walking'. 'You And Me My Love' and 'The Third Eye' stretch into dreamier territory, while 'It Ain't Your Sign (It's Your Mind)' and 'People And The World' inject a sharper social commentary. 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' itself is a peak momentihazy, minimal, instantly transportive. Then comes the more eccentric double close of 'Tongue Power' and 'Lonesome Cowboy', where Ayers' soulful surrealism glows brightest.

Review: Le Tres Jazz Club revive a 1975 gem with this reissue of Masaru Imada Trio + 2's 'Green Caterpillar', originally released on the revered Japanese jazz label Three Blind Mice. Spearheaded by Fuzati of Klub Des Loosers, the label remains committed to exhuming essential jazz hystereses on vinyl, where 'Green Caterpillar' standing as one of its inaugural releases. Masaru Imada's masterful Rhodes control epitomises the album's sound, recalling the textures of Marc Moulin's Placebo, a key influence of Imada's. 'A Straight Flash' follows in the same spirit, while 'Blue Impulse' and 'Spanish Flower' capture the artist's modal jazz virtues. Heightening the appreciation of Japanese jazz outside its home country, Three Blind Mice have redeployed Green Caterpillar as one of the best wrought records for the achievement of international recognition.

Review: London experimental and deep/minimal house innovator-continuator Matthew Herbert teams up with drummer and vocalist Momoko Gill - a self-taught musician with ties to Coby Sey and Tirzah - for a rawly real new record, Clay, as ever drawing on not just the textures of daily life, but also unconventional sound sources. As is typical for Herbert and his discog-wide interest in domestic sounds, we hear everyday foleys and realist samples utilised with efficiency, from kotos to basketballs, as Gill's voice carries across the eleven tracks a disarming clarity, from the layered arrangements of 'Mowing' to the up-close harmonies of 'Heart'. The pair previously collaborated on 2024's 'Fallen' and Gill's remix of Herbert's 'The Horse Is Here', but this is their first full-length release as a duo.

Review: This iconic debut album from James Mason is reissued here, and any self-respecting fan of jazz, funk or soul in any of their forms should consider picking up a copy if they haven't already. Not to be confused with actor, a one-time member of Roy Ayers' Ubiquity band, Mason's output is a testament to quality over quantity i he didn't release much, but everything that did see the light of day is worth its weight in gold. Bursting with intention, consciousness and masterful musicality, Rhythm of Life is nothing short of a tour de force. From the searing vocals, psychedelic synths and propulsive rhythm section of floor-fillers like 'Sweet Power, Your Embrace' and 'Free', to the heartfelt messaging of 'Good Thing' and the feel-good charm of 'Slick City', the album never misses a beat i and still sounds as fresh today as it did on its original release in 1977.

Review: The first album by saxophone player Takao Uematsu heard him flaunt his diaphragmatic abilities solo after a moment away from his merry band, the George Otsuka Group, which in turn took its name from the drummer whose rhythms you also hear on this record. Drawing clear inspiration from Joe Henderson, Uematsu's playing is marked by a distinctive blend of power, precision, and expressive depth that set him apart in Japan's jazz scene. Here on this curt suite in four movements, we hear insouciant tones meld with latent recuperations of structure, as on the bell-curving emotive peaks of 'TI' and the drum brushing deconstructions of 'Sleeve My Love', with gaping, catch-up rhythms handled masterfully by Otsuka.

First released on the indomitable Three Blind Mice label, we've an irreversible blend of hard-bop spice and deep modal oils on our plates here. Led by bassist Naosuke Myiamoto, there're star performances by Masayoshi Yoneda on piano, Takashi Goto and Takashi Furuya on saxophone, Kunji Shigi on trumpet, and Shoji Nakayama on drums. Notable for two compositions by the legendary Harold Land, including the lapping, soul-stirring, honorific 'One For Trane', the LP also contains three of Myiamoto's originals, the best of which has to be the celestial 'Where Do They Go'.

Review: Yet another star slice on Japan's genius jazz label Three Blind Mice, who've now reissued it again here, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio's Midnight Sugar, originally released in 1974, remains a landmark in Japanese jazz. Led by pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto - and with Hideto Kanai on bass and Tetsujiro Obara on drums - this stilly nighttime masterpiece is a true bask in a lamplit witching hour, nailed in the simple contrast of skeletal, swirling drum-brush playing and distant pianissimo. With striking renditions of jazz standards, including 'I'm A Fool To Want You' and 'The Nearness Of You,' where Yamamoto's delicate phrasing shines; the record's appeal rests in the trio's evident chemistry and Yamamoto's expressive yet precise touch.

Review: A specialist of short, exquisite instrumental funk records, Masayoshi Takanaka laid this sweet, yearning, yachtbound record down in 1979, following the previous year's Latin sojourn, Brasilian Skies. This slice of jollity sacrifices much of Takanaka's regional focus, and instead brings seven rather more generally awesome, mostly instru-prog-funk tunes to the fore (even though 'Radio Rio' still alludes to Brazil's home city, where Takanaka spent much time honing the samba and bossa nova influences that informed his craft, as well as performing). Lead tune 'Blue Lagoon' is noted for catapulting Takanaka's career after it was taken up by Pioneer for a TV ad; ambient heads would likely contest this history, arguing that the later ambient cut 'Sango-sho No Yousei' is the star tune, and the one that should've won him the limelight.

Review: Durand Jones, Aaron Frazer and Blake Rhein return with Flowers, their fourth album, revisiting the same raw, budding energy that first plotted them together in a Bloomington basement. Embracing a back-to-basics approach, and echoing the collaborative spirit of their 2016 debut, this self-produced LP took shape at Rhein's Chicago home studio, with many tunes edified from one-take demos, capturing a no-frills but beautifully petaled synergy between the trio. Flowers' 11 phases lean into a refined, yet playful blend of soul-disco, exuding a smooth, homegrown, sexologic vibe, like an aphrodisiac planter hung from the dashboard as we embark on a late night drive. "All of these songs touch on such mature topics, things that we never got to sing about before," says Jones. A right blossoming indeed.

Review: Mad About's new compilation uncovers a trove of little-known 7" soul and modern funk recorded across the US between the late 70s and early 80s. Drawn from self-released singles, forgotten one-offs and vanished imprints, the collective curate pulls on fragile ballads, crisp steppers and DIY studio heat from overlooked corners of Detroit, Monterey, Springfield, you name it. Highlights include the featherlight Citation cut 'Inspiration Of My Life', out on Red Line Records in 1977, and the wistful groove of Cho-Ko's 'Tried And Cried', out of Waterford in 1982. And the tightly played 'Nowhere' by Springfield's The Aferton Project, originally cut as a standalone 7" before anchoring their debut LP. More gems by Coleus, Ice-O-Matic, and Arejay garnish a monded crown of historic lives in soul and funk left otherwise mostly undocumented.

Sleeping Beauty
Review: Originally released in 1979, 'Sleeping Beauty' catches Sun Ra and the Arkestra at their most seductive - gliding between slow, funk-laced grooves and spaced-out jazz ritual. 'Springtime Again' floats on dreamy Rhodes chords and soft percussion, with ghostly vocals murmuring just out of reach. 'Door of the Cosmos' follows, folding in chant-like singing and funk-laced bass, equal parts devotional and dancefloor. Then there's the title track: a slow, luxurious sprawl of keys, horns and mood, glowing with after-hours warmth. A key figure in experimental jazz, Sun Ra led his ever-evolving Arkestra from the mid-1950s onwards, blending free jazz, doo-wop, electronics, poetry and science fiction into a visionary body of work. This reissue on Strut gives 'Sleeping Beauty' the shine it deserves - one of Ra's most intimate and accessible transmissions.

Review: By 2004, Harold Budd was a sufferer of chronic "no, really, this is my final album" syndrome; he had claimed Avalon Sutra as his artistic curtain call, which would reach its apotheotic height under the David Sylvian and his label Samadhisound. The reality was that Budd did go on to record many another album, including a Philip Glass tribute and a solo piano album, Perhaps (2007). But this, his intended retirement, was probably his most interesting. Florid neo-noir soundscapes - mured behind soft-saturated limits of sax and trellised piano - glean an unusual sense of a Lynchian underside to domesticity and normality. A soundtrack to a part-corrupted life, this "Arabesque" record transitions into utter serenity by the time of 'Little Heart', whose faint triangles and swelling pads nail an impure and contradictory sense of alterity, resignation and peace.

Review: New Zealand ensemble The Circling Sun follow up their debut with seven new compositions that blend mid-70s spiritual jazz with modular synth work and Afro-Cuban rhythmic structures. 'Constellation' opens with choral motifs and analogue pulses, setting the tone for a set that shifts easily between acoustic and electronic palettes. 'Mizu' and 'Seki' both lean into syncopated hand percussion, with upright piano and saxophone sitting high in the mix. 'Amina' introduces layered vocals over a looser, groove-driven rhythm, while 'Flying' stretches further into ambient territory, guided by slow synth arpeggios and minimal melodic phrasing. 'Teeth' cuts back to more percussive material, cycling through drum and modular interplay without reaching for climax. Closer 'Evening' softens the pace, drawing on warm textures and sustained chords to round out the set. The sequencing keeps the energy in motion without pushing too far into repetition. It's a subtle but deliberate shift in direction - less revivalist than their previous work and more focused on tone and movement.

Review: This joyous double LP highlights the infectious spirit of the roller-skating craze that swept through America's rinks in the late 70s and early 80s. This compilation curates 20 classics that mirror the glittering lights, the sweat-soaked dancefloors and the euphoric energy of the culture. The first side features The Whispers' 'And The Beat Goes On', a fitting mantra for an era where the rhythm truly never stopped. Tommy Stewart's 'Bump & Hustle Music' and Loleatta Holloway's fiery 'Love Sensation' keep the energy sky-high. Side-B's Candido classic 'Jingo' and Carol Williams' shimmering 'Love Is You' channel Latin-infused disco energy that filled roller rinks coast to coast. Disc two glides deeper into funk territory with Positive Force's 'We Got The Funk' and Gwen McCrae's 'All This Love That I'm Givin'' add grit and soul. Instant Funk and Inner Life bring raw heat, while Patrice Rushen's 'Forget Me Nots' adds an irresistible smoothness. It's capped off by Barry White's 'Change', a slow-burn closer that cools things down with cinematic flair. What makes this collection shine is not just the hits, but the sequencing and spirit that's gathered here with love for a time when music, wheels and dance created pure liberation.

Review: Favorite Records' reggae-minded offshoot Stix has been serving up periodic collections of disco-reggae cover versions for the best part of a decade, most created by a core crew that includes Maggy Tatcher, Soul Sugar (AKA organ maestro Booker Gee) and Mato. They all return for volume six, a collection curated by French digger Charles Maurice, alongside new recruit Mystic Jungle, who kicks things off with a sublime take on Roy Ayers' 'The Memory' with vocalist Roxanne. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, with our favourites including Soul Sugar's reggae/jazz-fusion interpretation of Ramsay Lewis's 'Sun Goddess', Taggy Matcher's hard, dub-wise flip of Cymande gem 'The Message', the same artist's roots style shuffle through Bee Gees' fave 'Stayin' Alive', and Matos' lovers rock inspired cover of Isley Brothers' loved-up classic 'Between The Sheets'.

Review: This album is one that is always going to be reissued until the end of time. It's pure, raw, inescapably good soul music that was popularised in recent years by Floating Points and his Melodies International label. The 1976 debut album by Chicago soul, rare-groove and jazz-funk fusionists Tomorrow's People was led by the Burton Brothers. This reissue comes on red vinyl for the first time and is full of a dynamic blend of styles-from the sax-driven disco-funk of 'Let's Get Down With The Beat' to the doo-wop-tinged 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' and the fiery 'Hurt Perversion'. The 20-minute title track, Open Soul, is a mesmerising space-soul journey which kicks off this highly sought after gem in style.

Review: The latest release from London's Kokoroko expands their jazz-rooted palette into something looser, brighter and more groove-led. Still grounded in Afrobeat, the eleven tracks lean into British r&b, West African disco and lovers rock, with the band embracing richer synth work and electronic textures. Opener 'Never Lost' sets out the warm, melodic terrain, before 'Sweetie' flips into a lilting, drum-machine-led love song. 'Closer To Me' and 'My Father In Heaven' offer hazy, introspective turns, while 'Idea 5 (Call My Name)' featuring LULU and the Azekel-assisted 'Three Piece Suit' sharpen the edges with silky, syncopated swagger. The Demae-led 'Time & Time' draws on 80s soul and head-nod jazz, followed by 'Da Du Dah', a bubbling interlude. 'Together We Are' and 'Just Can't Wait' stretch into optimistic dancefloor territory, before 'Over/Reprise' ties it all back to the band's meditative core. Their second full-length, it feels freer and more collaborative, but still unmistakably them.

Review: John Coltrane's exploration of modal jazz shines through in this energetic and thought-provoking performance. Opening with 'Naima,' the track takes an introspective yet powerful approach, allowing us to see Coltrane's unique ability to blend intricate melodic lines with a deep sense of emotional expression. The rhythm section, led by Elvin Jones on drums, locks in with Coltrane's saxophone, creating a sense of tension and release throughout the album. Tracks like 'Cousin Mary' introduce a playful, upbeat energy, offering a contrast to the more meditative moments. This release is a testament to Coltrane's ability to push the boundaries of jazz while maintaining an innate emotional depth.

Review: London DJ and selector Josh Mason-Quinn, better known as Somewhere Soul, curates a new collection mirrorring the ebb and flow of a full day's listening, mapping moods from early morning uplift to late-night release. Titled Rituals, this first volume is a birds-eye blend of jazz, soul and house of an international retinue, spotlighting lesser-known names together with a few more familiar underground figures. This first volume in a series offers a wide-angle snapshot of a scene in motion, built from the same crate-digging instincts and personal selection rituals that drive Josh's own work.

Review: Released without a hint of fanfare first time round in 2021, this deeply intimate collaboration between Ukrainian vocalist Yana Pavlova and Berlin-based producer Pavel Milyakov continues to command attention, almost of its own accord. Built out of minimal guitar patterns, submerged dub-influenced bass and spectral saxophone contributions from Alex Zhang Hungtai, the LP unfolds through a mix of improv and aleatory algo-synthesis, where rather than smoothing over imperfections, the artists lean into them; mic rustle, background clicks and ambient irregularities all inform on its dark jazzy, trancelike post-humanoid atmos.

Review: Dayton, Ohio's Record Player may have only released one private press 7" in 1979, but their story runs far deeper. Led by Charles Jackson, the band recorded a full suite of material that until now remained locked away, the product of a promising trajectory that was cut short before a major label deal could land. Excavated and restored by Now-Again, these tracks reveal a group entirely in step with the deep disco and street-level funk that defined late-70s Midwest soul. 'Free Your Mind' sets the tone: optimistic, rhythmically tight, and alive with the democratic spirit of funk's second wave. Cuts like 'Your Fantasy' and 'Backup N Funktown' showcase punchy horn charts and low-slung grooves, while 'Magic' and 'Bump-a-rump Ability' lean more playfully into disco and boogie. With bonus tracks like 'Sweetest Thing' and 'Go' rounding out the set, this is a joyous, overdue resurrection of a band that could've-and maybe should've-been. For fans of Edge of Daybreak, Split Decision Band and those tireless Dayton reels, this one's gold.

Review: Brownswood and Kokoroko link through local Brixton, delivering on Tuff Times Never Last, the jazz collective's newest LP. The 11-track LP is an uplifting exploration of life's dualities, weaving themes of community, sensuality, childhood, loss, and perseverance. The title draws from a viral meme of the same name, where co-bandleader Onome Edgeworth notes, "A lot of beauty comes out of difficulties". To have made one such collective mark on the London jazz circuit would definitely demand an appreciation of the fact of tough times going into developing one's skill as a performing musician; and yet the sentiment of temporary tuffness is matched by nostalgic summer memories of London evoked on the front cover, while the album's sound comes influenced by films like Crooklyn and The Wood, celebrating Black family and resilience, and incorporating British r&b, neo-soul, West African disco and electronic experimentation.

Review: Cal Tjader's 1975 session sees the legendary vibraphonist deep in conversation with Brazilian jazz, pulling rhythmic cues from Rio and translating them through a sun-dazed Californian lens. With Airto Moreira producing, George Duke arranging, and Hermeto Pascoal, Raul De Souza and David Amaro lending their colour, it's a record built on expert interplay and breezy complexity. 'Amazonas' opens with percussive shimmer and modal drift, while 'Xibaba' and 'Mindoro' balance groove with melodic looseness. On the flip, 'Tamanco No Samba' leans into funkier syncopation, contrasting the hazy melancholy of 'Corine' and the closing slink of 'Cahuenga'. There's clarity in how each part moves-airy but assured-and the new AAA cut from the original tapes gives it warmth without excess polish. It's a joy to hear fusion this fluid, with just enough weirdness from Hermeto to keep it from coasting.

Review: Sardinian percussionist Gabriele Poso curates a rich, rhythm-forward dive into Italy’s lesser-sung musical archives, spanning three decades of percussive innovation. Rooted in the folk and ritualistic pulse of Italy’s regional traditions but shaped by global currents—from Afro-Cuban to Brazilian influences—this 12-track compilation spotlights the drum as a vehicle for cultural memory and exchange. There’s smoky, synth-led jazz-funk on Gege Munari’s ‘Police Man’, carnival swing in Don Marino Barreto Jr.’s ‘Napulitano D' 'O Brasil’, and tribal propulsion via Naco’s ‘Volando Con Milton’. Tullio De Piscopo turns in cosmic disco flair, while Agostino Marangolo’s jazz-funk fireworks ignite the high-end. Poso’s own contribution, ‘Ritmo Italiano’, recorded live in one take, bridges old and new—pairing earthy tradition with slick, contemporary momentum. It’s a vibrant, lovingly sourced selection that affirms Italy’s rhythmic lineage as both geographically expansive and emotionally rooted—a compilation that listens like a history lesson with soul.

Review: First pressed in the early 70s and recorded at EMI Lagos, Tidiani Kone Et Le TP Orchestre Poly-Rythmo finds the prolific titular house band - responsible for around and perhaps more than 500 songs in a variety of styles for local Cotonou record labels - bound to Ghanaian saxophonist Tidiani Kone, the latter known for his work with the Rail Band and his influence on a young Fela Kuti. The session spans two hefty, hypnotic grooves rooted in Afrobeat but filtered through psych, soul and highlife, all rendered with a rare studio clarity for the era. This is the first reissue of the album, revived by London-based label Acid Jazz as part of its ongoing work curating the Albarika Store archive.

Review: First released in 2003 and long out of reach for collectors, Contrasts finds Marcos Valle folding early 2000s production into ever-fluid Brazilian songwriting. Now on a double vinyl reissue through Far Out, the record snags a protracted moment of creative stretch, where samba, bossa, baiao and pop intertwine with broken beat, house and trip-hop textures. 'Parabens' and 'Agua De Coco' became cult favourites, the former sampled by Childish Gambino and flipped by Tom Misch and Misa Negra. Produced by Roc Hunter with Valle's wife Patricia Alvi on vocals, plus Robertinho Silva and Azymuth's Alex Malheiros, Contrasts finally gets its due, complete with 'Valeu' and 'My Nightingale' on vinyl for the first time.

Review: Born in New York and raised in San Francisco, Eddie Henderson came up in rarefied company, his parents having been friends with Miles Davis; nothing felt accidental about the fact that he would go on to study at the San Francisco Conservatory, even though he was able to juggle this with a life outside of music too, near concurrently earning medical degree from Howard. But it was in Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band that his singular path through jazz really gun-started: by '76, Henderson had emerged as a sharp jazz-funk infused voice, cutting Heritage, his is second album as leader for Blue Note, with producer Skip Drinkwater and a band stacked with heavy improvisers. As heard better than ever on this signature Blue Note via Kevin Gray remaster, the driven stutters of 'Acuphuncture' and the murky slakes of 'Dark Shadow' sure do lock in a grand sense of cosmic unease.

Review: Originally released in 1976, this landmark outing from Nigeria's Lijadu Sisters marked their first major international push i a radical soul-funk statement laced with political edge. Opening with the bass-heavy swagger of 'Danger', it immediately sets the tone: sharp vocals, warm analogue grit, and tight, hypnotic percussion from a mix of trap drums and traditional Yoruba rhythms. 'Amebo' carries sly social commentary over organ stabs and polyrhythms, while 'Life's Gone Down Low' fuses soul's gospel cadences with simmering Afrobeat grooves i the same track that would later be sampled by Nas. But it's 'Cashing In' that cuts deepest: an indictment of exploitation and capitalist decay wrapped in funk guitar and layered harmony. Producer Biddy Wright's fingerprints are everywhere i from the soft hand percussion to the open mixdown that lets the sisters' vocals soar and slide in perfect unison. This reissue makes clear how far ahead of their time they were, offering an Afro-psychedelic protest record that still rings out with clarity.

First released in 2016, it dug into Parker's fascination with beatmaking and the relationship between hip-hop mechanics and jazz instinct, laying a sonic foundation for later works like Suite For Max Brown and Forfolks. Parker assembled a sharp ensemble for the sessions - Paul Bryan on bass, Josh Johnson on alto sax and keys, Jamire Williams and Jay Bellerose trading off drums, Ruby Parker on vocals and Parker himself steering guitar, synths and sampler. The IA11 Edition brings new context to the record with an expanded booklet, including never-before-seen photos, notes from Bryan, and a deep-dive conversation between Parker and label co-founder Scott McNiece. Gentle Wave (5:13)
Four Up (6:39)
Review: First out in 1975 on Nippon Columbia, Funky Stuff stamped the seal on Jiro Inagaki's jazz rock period - and what a finale. With pianist Hiromasa Suzuki handling writing and arrangement, the album leans hard into punchy psych, fuzzwacked guitar, rubbery bass, brass stabs and whip-tight drums; Suzuki conducts things sharply and melodically, steering Soul Media into tighter territory. Inagaki, who'd previously led The Soul Mates and His Black Rhythm Machine, praised Suzuki's knack for bold ideas and memorable phrasing, a quality clearly running through this set. The sound is tight and bright; less freeform jam, more focused funk workout, catching 70s Japanese jazz as it shimmies in Cuban motion toward the dancefloor.

A Night In Tunisia

Review: A reissue that brings renewed attention to one of British jazz's most enigmatic figures, pianist and composers. Originally released in 1965, the album features Taylor alongside drummer Jon Hiseman, bassist Ron Rubin, and soprano saxophonist Dave Tomlin. Despite its historical obscurity, Pendulum is a remarkable early example of modern British jazz. The exploratory spirit of the era is recorded here with clarity and emotional depth. Taylor approaches the piano with a rhythmic and harmonic freedom that recalls hints of Andrew Hill, constantly shifting the ground beneath his collaborators. The interpretations of standards like 'But Not For Me' and 'A Night in Tunisia' are radical in their reconstruction, with Taylor deconstructing and reshaping their core elements into something both alien and familiar. His original compositions on the second half further reveal a singular voice that was both lyrical and fractured, full of promise and haunted by volatility. The album's raw, immediate recording quality adds to its intimate, almost volatile energy. Taylor's mental struggles would sadly cut short his life and output. Whether you are a seasoned jazz listener or new to the genre, this album can be enjoyed by all who listen.

Review: Samantha Schmutz and Adrian Younge met at a Jazz Is Dead event, and their collaboration sure does sound like fate. Together, they knit a golden thread between Rio and Los Angeles, and 70s MPB and soul, recording straight to tape at Younge's all-analogue Linear Labs. Schmutz, known in Brazil as an actress, takes the opportunity to derobe a more personal, devotional side, channeling her childhood memories of singing to her father's records. Younge, whose past work includes sessions with Marcos Valle, Joao Donato and Joyce, then shapes the arrangements into curious, lullabying lush segmentations of hypno-samba, be these 'Nossa Cor' and 'Feitico', pulling towards bossa and Afro-Brazilian rhythms, or 'More Than Love', echoing Studio 54's cinematic disco.

Review: The undoable Coffy (1973) is a landmark blaxploitation film, directed by Jack Hill and starring legendary actor Pam Grier in her breakthrough role. Grier plays a nurse who turns vigilante to fight drug dealers and corruption in her community, blending affective grit and cool unapologetics to signal the tide of black woman empowerment. The film helped define the blaxploitation genre, with Grier emerging as one of its most enduring figures: Vibes ledge Roy Ayers' soundtrack, now reissued here through Anagram, matches the determinateness of the film's message, its grip-tight funk jazz fusions forging a vibraphonic propellerhead against which Dee Dee Bridgewater's vocals might flow with the force of rapids. The music is thus seen as as great, in its own right, as the movie.

Review: American organist Charles Kynard's 1972 session for Mainstream Records is reissued here with remastered audio and its original gatefold artwork. Recorded in Los Angeles with a core group of seasoned session players i including Chuck Rainey, Paul Humphrey and Arthur Adams i the nine tracks centre on groove-based jazz-funk anchored by Kynard's Hammond lines. 'Little Ghetto Boy' opens with slow phrasing and a blues-inflected feel. 'Hot Sauce' and 'Lime Twig' push into tighter rhythm section interplay, driven by Fender bass and clipped guitar. 'Slop Jar' and 'Rock Steady' lean heavier into funk structures, while 'Name The Missing Word' brings in sharper horn charts. 'The First Time Ever (I Saw Your Face)' and 'Shout' stretch the dynamic range, the former subdued and the latter more direct. Bonus track 'Smiling Faces Sometimes', featuring Carol Kaye on bass, closes the set with a looser swing and more open arrangement. Nothing here feels overplayed i the focus remains on tone and ensemble feel. It's a clean, unfussy reissue of a record that prioritises groove over soloing, now restored with clarity but no added polish.

Review: A razzling celebration of his 50th anniversary in music, Tatsuro Yamashita is, as of this very moment, re-releasing six albums from his Moon label (all released between 1983 and 1993) on cassette. Entirely sung in English, they include original works peppered side-by-side with Beach Boys covers, making a rare experimentation in form and career-panoramic dedication. Big Wave marks the second of six: with stunning multitracked vocal arrangements, Yamashita's spin on classic Beach Boys riptides like 'The Theme From Big Wave' and 'Girls On The Beach' prove a loyal but idealistically stretched tow-ins. Each tape comes with liner notes by Yamashita himself, and those who purchase all six titles will be entered into a prize draw for a special cassette storage case.

Review: Leeds-based group The Sorcerers expand their palette with eight new compositions that draw on spiritual jazz, minimalism and vintage electronics. The material continues their dialogue with the Ethiopique sound, though here it acts more as foundation than frame. 'Echoes of Earth' opens with slow, circular phrasing and a loosened rhythmic centre, setting a subdued tone. 'Ancestral Machines' and 'Abandoned Satellites' layer Mellotron, Jen 73 and Farfisa textures over sparse percussion, edging closer to early synthesiser music without abandoning their core ensemble dynamic. The Great Bell' and 'Beneath the Dunes' both sit lower in tempo, the former driven by low brass and negative space, while the latter hints at ambient structure. 'The Ghosts of the Black Drift' and 'The Infinite' stretch the harmonic language slightly further, with electronics used atmospherically rather than melodically. 'The Last Transmission' closes the set on a more resolved note i slightly brighter, but still understated. The group's refusal to lean into retro stylisation keeps the project grounded, and it's not a radical departure but a carefully measured step into expanded terrain.

Review: Swedish composer Sven Wunder sets sail into gentle waters on his fifth full-length, continuing his vision of orchestrated jazz-pop with a breezy, maritime palette. From the bright, flute-led optimism of 'Setting Off' to the melancholy stillness of 'Still Moorings' and the hazy shimmer of 'Warmer Air', the record unfolds like a slow morning tide, shaped by finely tuned arrangements for brass, strings and percussion. Tracks like 'Scenic Byway' and 'Windward' move with soft momentum, drawing on modal jazz and cinematic soul, while 'Deep Sea' and 'Turning Tides' dip into darker, eddying territory without disrupting the gentle drift. Wunder's rhythm section is quietly confident, anchoring these arrangements without overstatement. With each release, he expands a soundworld that sits somewhere between 70s library music and sun-dappled exotica, but here it's rendered with even greater poise-mature, painterly and quietly transportive.

Review: Indianapolis’ Rhythm Machine released their sole self-titled album in 1976, marking a rare bridge between late 60s and mid-70s funk eras. Formed by bassist James Boone and guitarist James Brantley from the ashes of cult group The Highlighters, the band delivered a blend of tight, soulful grooves, dynamic horn lines, and a fluid jazz digest. Its vibe flirts with Earth, Wind & Fire’s elementalism, but drifts into looser, cosmic territories away from terrestriality, where dreamy synths and shimmering guitars float atop liquefied production. A soprano sax cuts through with a sharp edge: originally a tough find, this reissue from Now Again revives a funky, soulful journey ripe for chill late-night bar spins or for collectors seeking overlooked classiques.

Review: Recorded in November 1959, this classic American hard bop session finds the young artist already forging a distinctive voice on the tenor. Backed by an all-star cast with trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, the album captures a moment of transition for Shorter, just as he was beginning his tenure with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The tenor saxophonist's first session as a leader, stands as a confident and engaging debut that hints at the genius to come. The six-track set is dominated by Shorter's originals, five in total, with the lone standard being a spirited and swinging take on 'Mack the Knife'. 'Down in the Depths' is the longest cut and is known for its moody development and dynamic solos, while Cobb's drumming is tasteful, commanding and endlessly musical. The rhythm section, then part of Miles Davis' working group, provides a locked-in yet supple foundation for the fiery frontline. A compelling portrait of a rising saxophonist surrounded by top-tier talent, delivering spirited and technically assured hard bop and a formative chapter in one of jazz's most iconic careers.

Review: Brighton-based Georgie Sweet returns with a beautifully realised second album, moving confidently beyond the laidback r&b textures of her debut into something more intimate and richly melodic. Created in close collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Marc Rapson, the project explores loss, youth, and self-discovery, filtered through Georgie's quietly powerful voice and understated songwriting. From the lush, piano-driven warmth of opener 'The Ones We Loved' to the jazzy bounce of 'Smaller' and the soulful midtempo glow of 'Equal Measure', the record flows effortlessly between moods. 'Bedsheets' and 'All That We Were' showcase Georgie's gift for epic, emotional balladry, while tracks like 'As I Am' and 'In My Stride' find a sweet spot between neo-soul smoothness and jazz-inflected groove. Produced entirely at Rapson's Hertfordshire home, the album feels deeply personal, marked by moments of vulnerability ('Patricia') and quiet introspection ('Maybe In A Different Life'), culminating in the hopeful resolve of closing title track 'I Swear To You'. It's a fresh, heartfelt release that confirms Georgie Sweet as one of the UK's most compelling hidden gems.

Review: The 31st release from Habbi Funk is a remarkable hoarde of gems from Libya's rich but largely unsung cassette culture. Rather than aiming for a definitive history, the album aims at a more personal curated journey through the country's underground music scenes from the late 80s to the early 00s, presenting a compelling mosaic of disco, reggae, pop, house and funk, tracing the evolution of a exciting sonic identity forged under the radar. The compilation draws from hundreds of tapes sourced across North Africa, including recordings salvaged from the now-demolished TK7 cassette factory in Tunisia and a marathon digitisation session in a Cairo hotel room in 2021. It features previously highlighted artists such as Ahmed Ben Ali, Cheb Bakr and Najib Alhoush alongside lesser-known but no less vital acts like Khaled Al Melody, Fathi Aldiyqz & Sons of Africa Band, City Lights Band, Libya Music Band and Group Hewaya. These artists worked within and often around political and technical constraints, recording in makeshift home studios or traveling abroad to lay down tracks. Their music reflects Libya's diverse cultural geography, blending Arab melodies with African rhythms and reggae's defiant swagger. Reggae, especially, emerges with a distinct local inflection, carrying both sonic innovation and social resonance.
This creativity was made possible through the power of community-led archiving. It captures a time when music was passed hand to hand and genre boundaries blurred into something entirely new and unmistakably Libyan.
