The Fantastics! - "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose"
Speedometer feat Ria Currie - "Answer To Mother Popcorn"
Review: Freestyle serve up 2 James Brown tributes as a sampler for the recent Modern Funk compilation. It has been argued that 2007
was the year that the underground funk movement finally started to make its presence known in the mainstream. Huge selling
artists such as Mark Ronson, Kanye West and Amy Winehouse spearheaded a movement towards a more organic and authentic
sound, selling thousands of records in the process and whisking bands, who have been gigging in small sweaty clubs in the UK
for years, off on world tours. The music itself harks back to the golden years of Motown, Watts and Stax, as well as hundreds of
unknown smaller labels, but given the all important production values of the 21st century, making it perfect for the dancefloor -
hence the tag 'Modern Funk'. The a-side finds The Fantastics (previously known as Reverend Cleatus and The Soul Saviours)
getting busy with The Godfather's 'Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose', sticking pretty close to the original but slapping their unique style
all over it. Over on the flip Speedometer and Ria Currie take on 'Answer To Mother Popcorn', originally a Vicki Anderson number,
giving it a update for the dancefloor in 2008.

Modern Funk Sampler 2

Quantic feat Spanky Wilson - "When You're Through"
DJ Aeon Seven - "Funky Furious"
Review: Another sampler from the recent Modern Funk compilation, mapping the biggest players of 2007 in the funk world.
Retaining the style and ethics of original funk compositions, but giving them a new millennial twist, these 2 tracks
should see some action on the dancefloor. Kicking things off is living legend Spanky Wilson, responsible for the
anthemic cover of 'Sunshine Of Your Love', an end of night classic at clubs the world over. Hooking up with the
closest contender to James Brown's crown as 'the hardest working man in show-business' - Mr Will Holland (aka
Quantic), this is one of the finest examples of old meeting new and it works a treat! On the flip, a relative newcomer
to the funk scene, France's Aeon Seven gives us a drum heavy workout with some fat horns and fresh Hammond
thrown into the mix.

Review: You can always depend on Freestyle to unearth and nurture the finest of funk's fringes, and The Shaolin Afronauts are a fine example of this great A&R. Sounding like they've just emerged from a Nigerian township circa 1970, but actually coming from Australia in the 21st century, their dedication to the Afro soul, Cuban funk and experimental jazz of the past four decades is commendably authentic. Pretty prolific, too: their debut album Flight Of The Ancients only came our way last year but yet they've already followed it up with an equally captivating, spiritually swinging sophomore that blasts, parps and fires its way into your brain. Conjuring the vibes of Fela Kuti, Sun Ra, Tony Allen and even dashes of Roy Ayers, this is one expansive long player.

The Players Theme
Soul Dynamite
Review: "The Players Theme" is another slice of wax from the recently liberated library album from The Sound Stylistics. Recorded in 2002 for Bruton, the album has weaved its way into funk folklore for collectors the world over, becoming a word of mouth phenomena and a collectors wet-dream due to its failure to ever get a proper release. The band consists of, amongst others, members of JTQ, Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies, The New Mastersounds, Galliano and The Herbaliser, a who's who of the London club scene. "The Players Theme" evokes the classic "Memphis Soul Stew" by King Curtis, with its creeping bass and layered instrumentation. Bringing the drums to the fore, this is another guaranteed dancefloor filler! Over on the flip "Soul Dynamite" swaggers with a similar style to Speedometers most recent work, with some heavy horn action. Once again, the breaks come thick and fast to keep your dancers sweating!

No Turning Back (The Reflex Revision - full length version) (6:48)
Review: Freestyle mainstays Speedometer are back... And they're brandishing a brand new album. "No Turning Back" is the lead title track. Featuring velvet vocals and sharp scat spits from James Junior, it's a soft-but-stern statement of intent that drags us in gradually and refuses to let us go once we're hooked. Those hungry for Speedometer's more upbeat party feels, flip for "Orisha's Party" where the groove is so tight and fizzy you can't but think of MJ's "Wanna Be Startin' Something". For good measure, The Reflex has also joined the party with a luxurious extended house shakedown that's primed for the season and beyond.

Dragging Me Down
Review: After releases on a dozen labels, one of Britain's finest funk groups Speedometer unleash their new single "The Shakedown(Say Yeah)" on Freestyle. Their current vocalist is none other than the legendary Martha High, a long time vocalist with James Brown until 1995 when she left to tour globally with James's sax player Maceo Parker. Does it hit all the right spots? Does it tick all the boxes? Hell yeah! Martha is firing on all four cylinders, ably assisted by UK soul man Myles Sanko whilst a killer guitar licked, punchy brass groove carries things on at a furious pace. "Dragging Me Down" on the flip sports a crystal clear performance from Martha as the band cook the bubbling organ tempo on gas mark 10; oven gloves at the ready people.

Review: Short-lived all-female group Spoilsports were active from 1980 and operated in a world where jazz-rock, modern soul and post-punk all cross-pollinated with each other. One of their only early DIY releases now gets reissued by Freestyle Records and finds the members - who were all active in London's feminist and improvised music scenes - lay down a couple of political yet playful numbers. With Carole Nelson on keys, Angele Veltmeijer on saxophone, Sheelagh Way on drums, Lesley Shone on bass, Isabel on congas and Laka Koq providing vocals Spoilsports cooked up a real storm here.

Review: Following a two-year break, the Shaolin Afronauts return with their third album. Those who've checked the Adelaide-based eight-piece's previous releases on Freestyle Records should know what to expect: specifically horn-heavy instrumental wig-outs rooted in the Afrobeat of Africa 70 and the spiritual jazz of Sun Ra, with occasional forays into Cuban rhythms. It's a humid and intoxicating blend, capable of producing both righteous dancefloor fare - see the Fela Kuti style strut of "Follow The Path", "Lagos Chase" and Afro-cuban jazz of "Ojo Abameta - and intoxicating, more introspective fare (the snaking flutes and ambient textures of "Interlude 1" and heady "Abyssinian Suite (Part 1)").

Review: Aussie Afrobeat and Afro-soul crew Shaolin Afronauts have released some terrific music over the years. While they've released more polished and complex music in recent years, we're still massive fans of their 2011 debut album Flight of the Ancients, which returns to wax in 2020 via a fresh pressing from Freestyle Records. It's a superb set all told, with the Adelaide-based combo strutting their way through both up-tempo and more laid-back fusions of Afro-beat and Afro-funk, each piled high with evocative horn lines, wah-wah guitar motifs, Tony Allen inspired drumming and seriously good solos from the band's talented players. Our current favourites include 'Flight of the Ancients', the irrepressible 'Kilimanjaro' and the spiritual jazz inspired closing cut, 'The Scarab'.

Review: Recorded in 2002 as a Bruton library album, The Sound Stylistics "Deep Funk" album has weaved its way into funk folklore for collectors the world over, becoming a word of mouth phenomena and a collectors wet-dream due to its failure to ever get a proper release. Despite file-sharers, bootleggers and back-street dealers pushing illegitimate copies of the tracks, the legendary status of this lost album has not waned one bit. Performed by some of the best musicians on the planet, and a veritable who's who on the London funk scene, the list is simply too amazing not to acknowledge fully here: James Taylor (JTQ), Jim Watson (Incognito), Mark Van Der Gucht (Galliano], Eddie Roberts (New Mastersounds), Neil Robinson (JTQ), Simon Lee (Dr. Seuss), Andy Ross (The Herbaliser), Mike Smith (Jamiroquai), Nichol Thompson (Brand New Heavies) and Snowboy. Collectively they make up The Sound Stylistics, a virtual group and jam band of the highest order.

Review: Speedometer, the UK's premier funk band, started out as a quartet gigging in small clubs in the Southeast of England in 1999, playing classic funk tunes by artists such as The Meters and The JB's. As the gigs got bigger, so did the band and they were soon complemented with the now renowned Speedo Horns and the all-girl soul vocalists The Speedettes. In 2000, the first single "Soul Safari" was released on the seminal New York-based label Soul Fire and was soon followed with a slew of fine releases. Each single was released on 7" only and limited to 500 copies. The emerging modern funk boom of the mid 90s, aided by magazines such as Big Daddy and DJs Keb Darge, Snowboy and Jazzman Gerald, lapped up the authentic sounds and tight arrangements. These early singles sold out immediately. It is to these early groundbreaking singles that this compilation is dedicated. None of the 12 tracks have been released on CD before, with 3 of the tracks being previously unreleased. From the firing opener of "Speedometer Parts 1 & 2" through to the heavy funk workout of "Hold The Bus" it is easy to see this bands influence on the style of artists such as The Quantic Soul Orchestra, Breakestra and any other band in the modern funk scene. Over the years, Speedometer have worked with many of the US funk legends including Joe Quarterman, Eddie Bo, Marva Whitney, Sharon Jones, James Bell (Highlighters),Lee Fields, and Billy Wooten. All the artists were blown away by Speedometer's authenticity and dedication to faithfully creating the original soul-funk sound.

Review: Speedometer are an outfit with more than 20 years behind them, and they grew from a four-piece soul and funk covers crew in the South East of the UK to a serious creative entity with a towering discography. Most of their music comes out on Freestyle these days, and so the label have done the right thing and tracked back to reissue their early deep funk masterpiece, This Is Speedometer. It's got all the raw, in-the-room spirit you'd expect of a band cutting their teeth, which makes the music all the more exciting. From vocal jams like 'Wait Up' to the springy breaks-in-waiting of 'Mullet', this is pure heat from a seriously talented crew who play it like they mean it. They may be a little slicker these days, but there's so much to enjoy about these nothing-to-lose sessions from Speedometer.
