Review: In fitting fashion for Sault, we've another surprise LP on our hands from the Inflo and Cleo Sol led collective. Sault's revolving door format is heard again in full saloon swing, doubling down on their knockout combo of elusiveness (every track title is an initialism) and creative spontaneity. Coming after a prolific but unconventional run - 2022 offered five albums made freely available for only five days - 10 indicates a return to a tighter focus, not abandoning the phonic plexuses and political undertones that have defined their work so far. Best on the record is the nymphlike, god fearing gospel jam 'L.U.' and the sculpted G-P-funk of 'K.T.Y.W.S.'

Originally released in 1976, it marked a shift towards more mellow, groove-based songwritinga and remains one of the most influential entries in Ayers' vast discography. He centres the vibraphone across ten tracks, using it as both melodic guide and percussive spirit. 'Hey, Uh-What You Say Come On' sets out the blueprint with radiant optimism, followed by the smoky bounce of 'The Golden Rod' and 'Keep On Walking'. Embracing a back-to-basics approach, and echoing the collaborative spirit of their 2016 debut, this self-produced LP took shape at Rhein's Chicago home studio, with many tunes edified from one-take demos, capturing a no-frills but beautifully petaled synergy between the trio. Flowers' 11 phases lean into a refined, yet playful blend of soul-disco, exuding a smooth, homegrown, sexologic vibe, like an aphrodisiac planter hung from the dashboard as we embark on a late night drive. "All of these songs touch on such mature topics, things that we never got to sing about before," says Jones. A right blossoming indeed.

Drawing heavily from golden-age hip-hop textures and 60s/70s film scores, this instrumental release imagines a parallel Jungle Book narrative, flipping the script on man vs. nature. Review: Originally released in 1958, and now reissued, was a stylistic change for Ray Charles. Departing from the gospel-infused r&b of his earlier Atlantic work, Charles grew into a lush, genre-blending approach that straddled a big band swing and string-laden balladry. Ray, 28 years old, this was already his sixth album of material. Now on SACD, a format known to be the most superior consumer format, we can all appreciate the intricate details of this landmark album. Side-A is a high-energy one, powered by arrangements from Quincy Jones and contributions from members of the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands. Tracks like 'Let the Good Times Roll', 'It Had to Be You' and 'A'exander's Ragtime Band' sparkle with swagger and sophistication. Charles's piano lines snake through the arrangements with soulful ease, unifying the jazz-driven ensemble with his distinctive r&b touch. Side-B turns more introspective, featuring Ralph Burns's rich orchestral arrangements. Here, Charles delivers haunting renditions of 'Just for a Thrill', 'You Won't Let Me Go', and the moving 'Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying'. His expressive phrasing and tender piano work bring emotional depth to each piece. The album concludes with a stirring take on 'Come Rain or Come Shine', arguably one of his greatest recorded performances. More than a recording of vocal talent, this album redefined what a soul artist could achieve within the framework of American popular music.
