Wamono Disco: Nippon Columbia Disco & Boogie Hits 1978-1982
VARIOUS
Cat: 180GWALP 06. Rel: 25 Jan 24
Godiego - "The Birth Of The Odyssey - Monkey Magic" (5:00)
Ikue Sakakibara - "This Is Hot" (3:59)
Soul Media - "I Will Give You Samba" (4:21)
Hatsumi Shibata - "Purple Shadow" (3:49)
Yumi Murata - "Krishna" (4:55)
Yoshito Machida & Godiego - "Ame Wa Knife No Yo Sa" (3:34)
Pink Parachute - "Disco Great Tokyo" (4:31)
Hatsumi Shibata - "Hazumi De Daite (A Woman In A Man's World)" (3:38)
Review: In the late 1970s and early 80s, disco swept through dancefloors across the world, with musicians, producers and labels in all four corners of the world recording and releasing their own local variations on the New York-pioneered sound. This fine compilation digs into the Japanese interpretation of the sound, offering up a selection of gems pulled from the vaults of the Nippon Columbia imprint. As you'd expect, there are some genuinely soaring and delightfully over-the-top cuts on show (see Godiego's 'The Odyssey Begins - Monkey Magic' and the disco-funk mania of Ikue Sakakibara's bilingual 'This Is Hot'), alongside such forgotten or lesser-celebrated gems as Yumi Moreta's rubbery bass-propelled 'Krishna', the strings-and-synth-drenched brilliance of Pink Parachute's 'Disco Great' and the ridiculously grandiose 'Hazumi De Daitte (A Woman Inside a Man's Body)' by Hatsumi Shibata.

Betty Griffin - "Free Spirit"
The Inspirational Souls - "Jesus Is Going Away (But He's Coming Back Again)"
Gospel Ambassadors - "Thank You Jesus"
Gloria Grffin - "You"
The Masters Of Music - "Troubles Don't Last Always"
The Gospelaires Of Dayton Ohio - "No Where To Run"
Shirley Finney - "Give Your Best To The Master"
The Testimonial Singers - "No Greater Love"
Herman Harris & The Voices Of Faith Hope & Love - "Give Yourself To Jesus"
Gospel Ambassadors - "Thank You Jesus" (Steve Cobby remix)
Masters Of Music - "Trouble Don't Last Always" (Rahaan edit)
Review: The "Mighty" Greg Belson has a bit of a soft spot for gospel disco, a sub-genre that proved popular in some of the genre's more righteous clubs. In Divine Disco, he offers up a lesson in the style, gathering together mostly little known gems originally released between 1974 and '84 (plus, it should also be noted, two tasty contemporary re-rubs from Rahaan and Steve Cobby). It's perhaps a little more varied than you'd expect; contrast, for example, the hands-in-the-air, can-I-get-a-witness enthusiasm of Gospel Ambassadors' "What Kind Of Man Is This", and the smooth, slowed-down torch song feel of "Give Yourself To Jesus" by Herman Harris & The Voices Of Faith & Love.

The Original Christian Harmonizers - "Blackman, Keep Doing Your Thing" (2:49)
Preacherman Isadore Womack - "I've Got Power In My Mind" (3:11)
Review: Having previously delivered two near-perfect compilations of gospel-powered disco (the essential Divine Disco volumes one and two), Greg Belson has now turned his attention to obscure gospel-soul and gospel-funk. As you'd expect, the standard is exceptionally high throughout, with Belson digging deep into his crates to present top-notch gems that will be all but unknown to all but the most hardcore gospel collectors. Highlights come thick and fast from start to finish, with our picks including the fiery, breakbeat-driven funk of the Wearland Singers' 'If You See Me Doing Wrong', the organ-heavy sweetness of Allen Gauff Jr & His Combo's 'I Don't Want To Be Alone' and the Gospel Ambassadors' sensational cover of gospel classic 'This Little Light of Mine'.

Benjamin Ball - "Flash A Flashlight"
Benjamin Ball - "I Just Keep Dancing"
Al Etto - "You've Got The Love"
Al Etto - "Hold On To Love"
Review: Cultures of Soul have a reputation for digging deep for inspiration, so it's little surprise to see their latest compilation shine a light on the previously unheralded South African synth-disco scene of the early 1980s. Compiled by label boss Deano Sounds and Johannesburg digger DJ Okapi, Boogie Breakdown gathers together 12 hitherto hidden gems from six seminal South African acts. There's naturally much to admire throughout, from the spacey synths and celebratory vocals of Harari's "Party", and the slick, soulful electrofunk of Don Laka's "I Wanna Be Myself", to the reggae and P-funk flavoured thrills of Benjamin Ball's "Flash A Flashlight", and the sensual, late night synth-soul of Al Etto's "Hold On To Love".

Review: First released way back in 1997, The Mood Mosaic compilations found good traction not merely for their compiling of many lesser-known dark/Italo disco artists into singular compilations, but also for their use of implicitly sexual imagery on their front covers - a business-minded pairing, to say the least. This reissue harks back to the comp's enduring legacy, with lackadaisical classics including Marta Acuna's 'Dance, Dance, Dance', Touchdown's 'Ease Your Mind' and Black Devil's 'Follow Me' all appearing in quick succession.

Review: Deep funk and psychedelic soul heads take heed - Italian label Mood Mosaic created an essential compilation series which has been enjoying a run of represses for anyone late to the party. Originally released in 2017, now you can get your hands on this expertly curated collection which flies under the banner of Supercool! Covering niche outfits like the original, 1970s Air, Carrie Riley And The Fascinations and Wess And The Airedales, this is a smouldering selection which will set the smoothest of moods and offer up lesser-known jams to diggers, beat-makers and lounge lizards alike.

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from the popular Too Slow To Disco series, namely glassy-eyed, pitched-down disco, boogie, yacht rock, blue-eyed soul and AOR with a distinctive soft-focus flex. Naturally, there's plenty to savour on the series fourth edition, much of it either obscure or previously overlooked. Our picks of a predictably strong collection include the horn-totin', much-sampled Pleasure classic 'Nothin' To It', the lusciously loved-up cosmic soul of Prime Time Band's 'Fall in Love in Outer Space', the eyes-closed, Rhodes-sporting AOR soul of 'Stay The Night' by the Farragher Brothers, the slow release swell of Alan Price's 'Groovy Times' and the sun-splashed jauntiness of Max Leake's 'Tell Me The Reasons'.

Review: Since launching eight years ago, Too Slow To Disco has now become the go-to compilation series for all those interested in AOR disco, glossy West Coast blue-eyed soul, yacht rock and slow-motion disco. This belated fourth instalment - volume three landed in stores five years ago - is every bit as alluring as its predecessors, with an even more obscurity-heavy track listing. Highlights are naturally plentiful, with our picks including the eyes-closed wonder of James Felix's deliciously loved-up 'Open Up', the low-slung shuffle of 'Music In Me' by Stephen Enchilidas, the synth-splashed Balearic rock haziness of Jimmie Spheeris's 'Beautiful News', and the quietly funky brilliance of Severin Browne's 'Stay'

Review: The term Afro-house seems to be getting chukka bout ever more freely and ever less responsibly these days. This second volume of Afro Rhythms from Comet France does have some credible and authentic claims on the term though with source material by Afro beat legend Tony Allen amongst others getting some fine remix treatment. Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer go first with an elastic dub, Jeff Sharel layers in more minimal textures to his remix of Brighter Nights and on the flip is a standout from Ed Banger's Krazy Baldhead which is all tin-pot percussion, shuffling broken rhythms and off grid madness.

Review: Symphonical's The Key To Our Love series has proven exceedingly popular with soul lovers and this third volume shows there is still plenty of mileage in it yet. As always there is an in-depth exploration of black and brown American artists here who are the foundations of the sound. Most of those featured will be obscure to many - but not for long, as their music makes a lasting impression. There is the vulnerable lo-fi sound of Laurene Lavallis's 'Love Don't Change,' Delbert & The Stewart Sensation's sentimental swooner 'How Far Can Our Love Go?' and Carrie Riley & The Fascinations offer up some lovely harmonies on 'Living In A Lonesome House Without You' amongst many other standouts.

Review: Miles Away: One, curated by label founder Dom Ore, is a soulful journey spanning continents, eras, and genres. Rooted in soul, this compilation seamlessly blends legendary musical figures with lesser-known gems, creating a cohesive listening experience. Disc one kicks off with Idris Muhammad's spiritual-jazz masterpiece 'I'm A Believer,' leading into modern soul and disco selections that showcase Miles Away's reputation. Highlights include Eugene Smiley's rare crossover-soul track 'Yes It's You' and Solid Gold Revue's infectious dance cut 'She's So Good.' The compilation also features enduring soul funk like 'No Communication' by True Transfusion and gospel-infused sounds like 'Fantasy Ride' by Uneda Dennard. Disc two takes a different turn, offering soundtrack and library music cuts alongside eclectic finds like Laine August's electro-pop gem 'Be My Friend' and Colour's stripped-back street-soul track 'Deeper.' The set concludes with Margaret Singana's timeless cover of Stretch's 'Why Did You Do It.' Painstakingly researched and officially licensed, each track is accompanied by in-depth liner notes, honoring the artists and their music. Miles Away: One is a worthy addition to any collection.

Review: The main selling pint of this 16-track set - aside from the quality of the music on offer - is the way that it showcases both original African funk, Afrobeat and Makossa, and American funk and soul records that drew inspiration from those sounds. So while we're treated to genuinely killer cuts from the catalogues of Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade & His African Beat and Tony Allen and the Afro Messengers, there's also space for the pioneering jazz-funk of Oneness of Juju and the Headhunters, a killer cover of 'Soul Makossa' by the Lafayette Afro-Rock Band, the Meters-ish brilliance of Nite-Liners 'Afro Strut', and the Clavinet-happy heaviness of Ice's impeccable 'Time Will Tell'. To borrow an old cliche, this compilation is, quite literally, all killer, no filler.

This compilation - the first of two plus a ton of accompanying 7" samplers - superbly documents the various clusters of talented session musicians based throughout Belgium dabbling in all manner of funk, Latin, soul, psychedelia and more. Some acts you will know, like Placebo whose music has been the subject of a reissue programme from Music On Vinyl, but there are still plenty of curios and forgotten gems to discover like Open Sky Unit and the sublime orchestral funk of "Tonight's The Night" by SSO.

Review: Frankfurt label Infracom presents the second edition of Saigon Supersound. The bustling Vietnamese capital at the time was often depicted as the 'Pearl of Southeast Asia' and it is here that the label presents more interesting tunes from a musical era that has long been obscured. Label boss Jan Hagenkoetter is delighted to dig deeper and share with you the beautiful music of this short but significant period in the country's history between 1954-1965. Its diversity explores Vietnamese bolero music, rock and roll influenced by American troops who brought their music to the city, plus traditional folk crossover, latin influences and satirical musical theatre.

Review: Williamsburg-based Truth & Soul Records is fast becoming one of the most reliable sources of modern soul and revivalist deep funk. Should you be unfamiliar with their output - and you should be, given that they set up shop in 2003 - this double LP trawl through the label's bulging back catalogue should be an essential purchase. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the Cuban and Caribbean influenced instrumental brilliance of Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band's "Pimp", and the stripped-back deep soul of Beau Williams' "I'll Be Home Soon", to the raw, Hammond-heavy 60s jazz-funk of The Fabulous 3's "Night Bird" and fuzzy analogue afro-funk of Zafari's "King Masuru".

Review: There could have been no better way to escape the Soviet than through the music of the Groove of ESSR compilation series which now returns with a second volume. This time Funk Embassy serves up 11 cuts from between 1973 and 1984 and they are a mix of dance floor-ready sounds and more pensive material for somewhere else. Most of these tunes are getting their first-ever release here and the 12" comes with a 30-page booklet featuring some great background as well as thoughts from some of the artists. The likes of likes Gilles Peterson and DJ Tahira played tunes from the first one which tells you how good this series is.

Review: Hungarian outfit Budabeats proudly present Psyched Out Grooves From Hungary (1969-72), their latest compilation tracking the emergence and sure formation of psychedelic rock in Hungary. In the label's own words, "there were barely any drugs in Hungary to begin with", and we take this to be precisely the point. Psychedelia isn't a state that should rely on drugs as a crutch: no, there was something already dormant, but primed for the teasing, in the Hungarian psyche, that lent to its acquired taste for psych in the 60s and 70s. With contributions from "an undercurrent of smaller, semi-professional bands" who persisted in the shadow of a select few huge names, who dominated by dint of their sponsorship by the one, state-owned major label, this comp betrays an insider's knowledge and then some, with highlights from Non-Stop, Sampolo, Neoton, Apostol and Kex standing out as peak-quality Hungarian psych, despite none of these bands ever receiving a breakthrough. Such songs and bands were "the exception, not the norm", the "illusion of a scene".

Review: Between 1980 and '84, Duomo Sounds Ltd released some of the most inspired disco and boogie to come from Nigeria. This fine compilation from Odion tells the story of the label via a selection of the Humphrey Aniakor-founded imprint's finest moments. Although fuzzier and more lo-fi than the American and European records that inspired them, with the distinctive grooves of Afro-beat and Afro-funk never far away, the vast majority of these tracks are every bit as weighty and floor-friendly. Highlights include Mike Umoh's immaculate "Shake Your Body", the Moog-laden Christy Ogbah slow jam "Aimiugwah", the Clavinet-happy bounce of Bindiga's "Perfect Disco Machine" and the celebratory silliness of Johnny O's festive "Bazz Xmas Eve".

Review: For their latest tribute to Nigeria's booming music scene of the '70s and early '80s, Comb & Razor Sound has decided to do things differently. Whereas most compilations of vintage Nigerian grooves focus on music made in and around the bustling city of Lagos, Calabar-Itu Road looks instead at tracks made and released by those in South Eastern Nigeria. In true crate-digging fashion, the two records here - featuring tracks from previously unheralded stars of the "Calabar" scene, including Etubom Rex Willians and Cross River Nationale - come accompanied by a thoroughly researched, 44-page booklet telling the story of the region's love affair with popular music. If you're interested in African funk, soul and disco, it should be an essential purchase.

The 10-track compilation captures Afrobeat, Yoruba-funk, Afro-funk, highlife and spiritual jazz gems that reflect Lagos' rich musical tapestry. Each track blends traditional rhythms with modern influences which are the hallmarks of the city's vital scene. Jazzhole is a label led by Olakunle Tejuoso and his son and has been a cultural institution for over 30 years thanks to its championing of African and Afro-diasporic sounds. This is another welcome reissue that reminds us of Nigeria's enduring creativity.

Review: Def Radio marks the return of Marc Mac's long-running Visioneers project. As ever with Visioneers, this record reimagines the default stock of hip-hop's best-stocked jukebox, often beginning from scratch and/or working around a central sample, to either recontextualise a classic or come up with a new song; whatever the case, the key hallmark of a Visioneers album is its live instrumentation, with flaunts a *gauche et droite* mastery over hip-hop's laggard swing. Where this would usually handled by the chance placement of the sample snippet on the timeline alone, here it (sounds) actually drummed in. On Def Radio, lead tune 'The Look Of Love' predominates with its three-note ostinato and unhurried beat flaneur, whilst runner-ups 'Layin' Low, Gettin' High' and 'Cuban Candy Sticks' also stick out as salient among the troupe.

The story goes that back in the late 70s in the Seattle area of the Pacific North West, Danny Ward & Reality were an oft called upon funky jazz collective for anyone throwing college or hardcore funk parties. Rather than just serving up covers of the day's big hits they offered proper musical trips though more considered fair from artists like George Benson. This album catches them at their best on one such mid-week gig in the summer of 1977.

Although he never finished it, Be With has decided to put together a final posthumous album that contains the five songs he finished for the set - which, impressively, include cameos from the likes of Kamasi Washington and Thundercat - and six cuts from an obscure, Japan-only CD from 2013. It's a wonderful listen from start to finish, with the Latin-tinged soul-jazz of "For The Rainbow", the head-nodding boogie business of "Sigh" and the synth-laden, strangely swung brilliance of "Are You Ready" amongst the highlights.

Throughout his career, Watson influenced countless artists, including Jimi Hendrix, and earned a Grammy nomination for best contemporary blues album. Tragically, Watson passed away while touring Japan in 1996, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and groove. A Real Mother For Ya remains a standout example to Watson's musical genius. It was an adaptation of the short story Bartleby, the Scrivener; A Story of Wall-street by Herman Melville. The plot revolved around the young audit clerk Bartleby, who as a result of being overwhelmed by the pressures of modern life withdraws into his own world. 31 years later, there was another remake directed by Jonathan Parker, with Crispin Glover in the lead role. Sound wise, it is a' blissful mix of British pastoral jazz and serious drum, double bass and string action'.

It was originally self-released back in 1980 on their own self titled label and now comes on nice heavyweight vinyl, which is just what it deserves. The band was well known in their day as leaders in their field thanks to famous performances all across Trinidad, Tobago, the Caribbean, US Virgin Islands and French Guadeloupe. The dropped four albums in all and plenty of top-selling singles and this one is one of the best - a fine mix of funk, soul and disco with glorious grooves and magical melodies as well as buttery smooth vocals.

Cunny Jam Wayo (16:25)
Agboju Logun (11:42)
Gboro Mi Ro (7:43)
Review: Shina Williams' first album from 1979, African Dances, marked the moment where the Nigerian afrobeat artist would team up with 'His African Percussionists', to form one of the most sought-after sounds of the next decade. Taking inspiration from the Master Of Ceremonies, Fela Kuti, this album is just as loose and evocative as the legend's, and perhaps even a little more oriented towards the disco end of the spectrum. "Cunny Jam Wayo" is a classic afrobeat march, with its rolling drums popping off left, right and centre, while "Agboju Logun" offers a softer funk ride, and "Gboro Mi Ro" lifts the soul at the final moments with a truly memorable string of brass instruments and vocals. Cop this, not the L300+ original..!

Review: Most people only know Washington, DC band The Winstons for the thing: the righteous drum break from their single 'Amen, Brother', which over the past four decades has become the backbone of countless hip-hop, breakbeat hardcore amd drum & bass tunes. That killer cut is not only featured on this much-needed first vinyl reissue of the band's long out of print 1969 debut album, Color Him Father - a genuinely brilliant collection of emotive soul songs - but, on this limited-edition version, also included in specially extended form on a bonus, dubplate-style single-sided 12-inch. This fully remastered version of the set also includes four extra tracks, all previously issued as singles, making it the definitive version of a vitally important album.

Review: Zamrock, anyone? Often stylised as W.I.T.C.H, WITCH were one of the leading musical lights of post-colonial Zambia, a band that rose to prominence during the early-1970s, a particularly fertile period in the East African nation during which hopes for the future were incredibly bright. Independence leading to the blossoming of homespun ideas, culture, art and creativity. The story takes a tragic turn as the decade reached its final years, the economy collapsing and policymakers turning increasingly authoritarian. Like many in the 'scene', WITCH would fade, almost into obscurity, although the psychedelic rock-hued legacy they left survived, and then experienced a resurgence from 2012, when they reformed amid renewed interest. Kuomboka represents the group at the height of their fame, an album that still sounds packed with optimism, despite insidious changes in the air when it landed in 1976.

Review: This record was thought to have been lost until recently re-discovered. Recorded in the 1970s and has been loving remasters from the original tapes here and pressed onto heavyweight wax. This collection features some heavily sampled tunes such as 'Funkanova' which has been pillaged by the likes of Black Science Orchestra, DJ Sneak and The Bucketheads. It also has a famous rendition of the Ronnie Laws jewel 'Always There'. Wood, Brass & Steel members include the likes of Doug Winbush who went on to play with the Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash.

His Tap Water very much set that reparation in motion when it arrived back in 2016 right when modern funk was making a comeback thank to Dam Funk et al. It's a hard to find original that still stands up and now it has been followed up by a second volume of brilliantly squelch analogue funk, dazzling boogie baselines, lush sci-fi chords and retro future fills, vocals and hooks.

Review: In 2002, the Japanese government recognized bamboo flute maestro Hozan Yamamoto as a "living national treasure". It was in honor of his lengthy career in music, and in particular the way he championed a traditional Japanese instrument even when he was turning his hand to Western music. "Beautiful Bamboo Flute", an album first released in 1971 and almost impossible to find since, is a superb example of this. It sees him deliver haunting, emotional and life-affirming solos over funky jazz, big band and fusion backing tracks that tend towards the fresh and funky. It's an unusual blend, but also an invigorating and exciting one.

Review: Unlike previous instalments in the 180g label's Wamono series, this isn't a compilation in the strictest sense of the term, but rather a retrospective. It showcases a range of killer jazz-funk and rare groove tunes recorded at Nippon Columbia studios in the mid 1970s by arranger Kiyoshi Yamaya, koto legend Toshiko Yonekawa and shakahuchi master Kifu Mitsuhashi. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the mellow, slow-burn lusciousness of 'Nanbu Ushioi-Uta' and the up-beat, guitar solo-laden brilliance of 'Hohai-Bushi', to the all-time Japanese jazz-funk classic that is 'Saitaro-Bushi' and the solo-laden brilliance of 'Asadoya Yunti', whose dazzling Fender Rhodes solos are reminiscent of the early '70s work of the late, great Billy Preston.

Review: The EP Lagos Paris London by Yannis & The Yaw, featuring the late Tony Allen, is a testament to the powerful creative synergy between two musical luminaries. Initially envisioned as a nostalgic Afrobeat project, the collaboration took on a life of its own, weaving together elements of rock, funk, jazz, and dub in a dynamic fusion. Recorded over a series of sessions in a Paris studio, the music emerged organically from jams and loops, guided by the intuitive telepathy between Yannis Philippakis and Tony Allen. Joined by Allen's regular collaborators, the result is a collection of near-complete songs imbued with high-spirited, loose-grooved exuberance. Despite facing challenges such as scheduling issues and Covid restrictions, Yannis felt a deep obligation to complete the project in honor of Allen's memory and his desire to share the music with the world. Lagos Paris London serves as both a celebration of their friendship and a timeless testament to the enduring influence of Tony Allen's rhythmic talent.

Review: Released in the wake of Tony Allen's death, Lagos Paris London is the latest full-length record by Foals' Yannis Philippakis in collaboration with the late great drumming legend. The Yannis And the Yaw project finally emerges after years of fan-teasers revealing Philippakis to have been working with the acclaimed Fela Kuti bandmate and Afrobeat pioneer in the studio; after Allen's death in 2023, the likes of 'Walk Through Fire' and 'Lagos Paris London' effortlessly blend the sounds of Afrobeat and post-punk, bridging the spirits of each while unexpectedly swerving from the duo's initial impulse to produce a nostalgic record.

Review: Although born and raised in Holland, the duo behind the Yin Yin project "make music for an imaginary tropical Island" based "somewhere between the Netherlands and South East Asia". It's an apt description of their undeniably humid, wide-eyed style, which variously combines elements of surf-rock, dub, psychedelia, ambient, electronica, spaced-out synth-pop and various traditional South East Asian musical tropes. It's a style that makes this long promised debut album a unique, distinctive and hugely vibrant listening experience. While inventive and colourful, their music is also largely dancefloor friendly and highly addictive. In other words, this is one debut album that's well worth picking up.
