Review: Many of The Doors' albums are being reissued right now and few are better than their self titled effort. This is a remastered edition of the legendary 1967 debut featuring iconic tracks like 'Break on Through (To the Other Side),' 'Light My Fire' and 'The End' which are all now staples of the musical canon and very much show the band's unique blend of psychedelic rock, jazz and blues. With Jim Morrison's haunting vocals, Robby Krieger's inventive guitar work, Ray Manzarek's distinctive keyboard riffs and John Densmore's dynamic drumming, The Doors remains a classic in rock history.

Be Here Now (Record Store Day RSD 2025)
Cat: 964153 331.
Review: George Harrison's 1973 solo LP Be Here Now shortly followed the breakup of the Beatles and came at a time when the innovative guitarist had already set afoot a new spiritual path. Having studied Eastern philosophies and nurturing a new connection to the Hare Krishna movement, Be Here Now followed All Things Must Pass (1970) as a relatively experimental, layered work, embracing a blend of Indian and Western musical elements. Many of Harrison's neo-psychedelic contemporaries, such as Led Zeppelin, were just as easily appropriating vedic patterns and Orientalist tropes, so Harrison wasn't alone in this. But this avatar of Harrison's solo vision is entirely singular, mixing sensitive arrangements, eudaimonic themes, haunting vocals, and nascent studio effects (the reverse reverb is strong with this one).

Review: Amid a comprehensive Doors reissuing effort by Rhino Records comes a new re-press of their storm-whipping sixth record. Infamously the last album to feature the band's leading symbolic light and 27-club member Jim Morrison - who died two months after the album's release - LA Woman does indeed sound like a last hurrah, reigniting the band's debutant rollicking rock flame after a relatively dozy lull in sound at their career mi point. Marked by rip-roaring blues and a latterly throatier vocal delivery by Morrison, 'Been Down So Long', 'LA Women', and 'Hyacinth House' evidence a loyalty and an obsession with classic and raw blues. The jangly hit single 'Love Her Madly' would be one of the few songs on the record not to incorporate the Southern American sound, by and large. Steeped in a controversial history encircling the Doors' later career - Morrison had been charged with profanity and indecent exposure for stripping naked at a concert in Miami in the year before recording - LA Woman does indeed have a righteous, raunchy, flippant, "f*** it" charge about it.

Review: This is The Doors' masterpiece - their Led Zeppelin IV; their Dark Side Of The Moon. Jim Morrison and co. dimmed down the synth, brass and strings of their previous album, The Soft Parade, and cranked up their blues rock DNA. Already home to the likes of the Yardbirds and Cream, the British public lapped up this invigorating new sense of direction and upon its release in 1969, it became their biggest UK chart success. 'Roadhouse Blues' is a rabble-rousing performance with a sense of swagger and snarl that reflects the character of the then bearded Morrison, who was looking a far cry from the clean shaven boho poet that entered the scene earlier on in the 60s. Another banger on here is 'Indian Summer'. Although for totally different reasons. It's no wonder this track was used to soundtrack the desert peyote trip in Oliver Stone's Doors film, as it's among their most languid and psychedelic work ever.

Review: "I've always loved the Doors. I know it's kind of fashionable to think the Doors are naff, but I don't give a f*ck about that." The words of Matt Berry, not ours. But we have to agree. The songs here on The Doors' second album are some of the finest to ever be pressed onto wax. 'People Are Strange' is one of the most stunning singles ever and 'Love Me Two Times' is one of the catchiest songs of the 60s. The Doors were at the forefront of innovation in rock and so they included a wide range of instruments, including the marimba and they were among the first in rock to incorporate the Moog synthesizer. Their producer, Paul A. Rothchild, was instrumental in this, providing a then cutting edge eight-track recording machine. The results of recording to tape like this are supreme and it's no wonder people are returning to this style, favouring it ahead of clunky computer-based programmes.

Review: The third album by The Doors from 1968 made heavier use of improvisation, opposing their earlier reliances on pure composition. Responsible in large part for what has become known as "third album syndrome" - the tertiary equivalent of the infamous "sophomore slump", whereby, in either case, bands struggle to come up with original material after a stonking debut or two - the album provoked mixed reactions on release, owing to its loosened, comparatively slack sound, in contrast to their raucous debut and second LPs. While Jim Morrison's worsening alcoholism provoked such skepticisms at the time, the album was embraced by fans in hindsight, and now this Rhino Records release cements that legacy with new original liners and rare photos. Elements of their original sonic buzz still remain, as on the title track, where twinging stereo twangs complement expectant, purgatory tenors from Morrison.

Review: The Doors' fourth album The Soft Parade was a remarkable return to form in the milieu of jazz rock and pop rock. This was a bold stylistic move made in seeming response to fan distaste at their third LP, 1968's Waiting For The Sun, an album deemed lethargic by some critics compared to their earliest smashes. And yet despite gruelling tour schedules and tumultuous intra-group dramas, The Soft Parade remains a controversial record, again inciting critical accusations of sellout co-optation by the AOR industry machine in the blue corner, and in the red, curious endearments to the Doors' brachiations in jazz ('Touch Me') and banjo blues ('Runnin' Blues').

Review: The Steve Mason-led Scottish indie icons came to prominence with this collection of initial EPs (originally released in 1998) and enter 2025 with a reissue of the songs that put them on the map. The most famous song here is 'Dry The Rain' because it's played in the John Cushak-starring comedy about a record shop owner, High Fidelity. The reissue comes as the band have reunited for the first time since they split in 2004. Steve Mason has had a strong solo career in the time after their split, but the power of the Beta Band's music has never dwindled and so it's a deeply appreciated new era. And what better way to return than with the hallowed first recordings in audiophile quality?

Review: Perhaps the second best known Mazzy Star album after 'So Tonight That I Might See', She Hangs Brightly is also the debut album by the band, first appearing on Rough Trade amid the same late 80s haze that ran *en course* with early stirrers as Red House Painters or Galaxie 500. True to their origins as a nebulaic reconstruction of the band Opal - formed of the loose syndicate known as the Paisley Underground, a consortium of post-psych-everything LA bands in the 90s - we hear former opalescent guitarist team up with now vaunted singer Hope Sandoval for a simpler blues-gaze bill-topper, with tracks like 'Ride It On' and 'Give You My Lovin' proving that they'd perfected the formula long before 'Fade Into You'.

Review: On their second album Desperado, the Eagles went deep into the idea of the American Wild West. With their country twang, Glenn Frey and Don Henley's songs were already cowboy-friendly, but this album took the concept further. Released in 1973, it captures everything you love about the Eagles from shit-kickin' rock n' roll like 'Out of Control' facing off with sentimental classic 'Tequila Sunrise'. After all this time it's the title track which remains one of the band's most beloved songs - everything a lonesome man on the prairie needs to hear after a hard day and a hoedown.

Review: Yes's 1972 masterpiece remains a standout in progressive rock and this new remaster elevates it to even greater heights. With Steven Wilson's meticulous work, the album shines in all its sonic glory, bringing out the intricate details of the band's performances. The original tracklisting, which includes the iconic 'Close to the Edge,' 'And You and I,' and 'Siberian Khatru,' is a showcase of brilliant musicianship and songwriting. Each member plays a crucial role, with Steve Howe's guitar work and Chris Squire's bass standing out, while Rick Wakeman's organ solos add grandeur. This album refines an already near-perfect classic.

Review: Before AC/DC broke globally, they cut their teeth on two raw, early LPs recorded for the Australian market only: High Voltage (1975) and T.N.T. (also 1975, just months later). Neither album was released outside of Australia at the time, and both are notably different from the later international compilation also titled High Voltage. These local pressings captured the band in its scrappy, formative state: Bon Scott had just joined, and the Young brothers were still refining their punchy mix of blues rock, pub swagger and no-frills riffage. Little do most know that later international chart-smashers like 'It's A Long Way To The Top' and 'The Jack' first became classics in Australia; now Legacy US honour that rich history.

As for the music, this is an anniversary edition of the Damon Albarn-led group's earliest available commercial release and one of their very best. The noir feel of the title track, thanks to its unforgettable melodies and atmospheric, Morricone-esque flourish, is one of the greatest indie singles of the century so far. And '12D3' is one of Gorillaz' most underrated, full of deep meaning and clues into Gorillaz mythology.

Review: Mazzy Star's Among My Swan is a softer, lonelier, inwarder record, forming the third most popular album by the band after She Hangs Brightly and So Tonight That I Might See. Now reissued by the label that first released it, the band take their cues from the spectral minimals of Third/Sister Lovers and the Velvet Underground's quieter corners; grounding itself in bluesy forms, the edges are blurred, as Hope Sandoval's husky voice hovers somewhere between sigh and spell, a hushed presence gliding through David Roback's gauzy slide guitar and warm organ tones. A subtle, narcotic sway is represented in latent cygnet tones, not chasing attention, but rewarding close listening with moments of quiet hypnosis.

Review: Written and recorded at pace just ahead of their grandest tour yet, UK rock band Wonderhorse's 'The Rope' comes afire of an in-and-out session at London's RAK Studios with producer Loren Humphrey, best known for work with Florence & The Machine and Arctic Monkeys. The track leans into the same straight-to-tape immediacy that drove Midas, the band's second album and a noticeable step away from the more patient songwriting of Cub. Jacob Slater is in sharper dress here, fusing classic indie and garage affray. It's a fitting release for a band that's shifted from low-key Cornish retreat to sold-out venues in just a few years, keeping the rough edges intact even as the stages grow.

Review: The original 'High Voltage' first appeared on TNT, AC/DC's second Australian LP, detonated in December 1975. It's not on the earlier High Voltage album, despite the title overlap: a quirk that's confused fans of the Sydney heavy metal stars ever since, and which sometimes serves as a litmus for fans real and false. Written by Angus and Malcolm Young with Bon Scott, 'High Voltage' is a mission statement: loud, bratty and proudly anti-establishment. Bon howls about letting loose and cranking amps, while the band churns through a stripped-down stomp built for beer-soaked venues and zero subtlety. When Atlantic recompiled tracks for the international High Voltage release in 1976, this was one of only two songs lifted from TNT, giving the rest of the world a taste of what Australian fans already knew: this was a band that would never waver on their scorched-earth riff policy.

Review: R.E.M.'s first single gets a sharp rethink here, as onetime breakbeat hopeful turned superproducer Jacknife Lee reworks 'Radio Free Europe' for 2025, brightening its edges without sanding off the rawness. The 10" EP gathers together early recordings from 1981, when Mitch Easter first put the band to tape: the prized Hib-Tone single version of 'Radio Free Europe', its original B-side 'Sitting Still', the minimal 'Wh. Tornado' demo, and Easter's dubbed-out studio mix 'Radio Free Dub'. Pressed to orange vinyl and limited in run, the release acts as a flashpoint between the group's ragged, wiry beginnings and the high-gloss politics of Lee's modern production. All proceeds go to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, a nod to the band's early spirit of defiance.

Review: In the music business the thinking often goes that first week sales are an indicator of a release's popularity and after that it's downhill from there. Occasionally, however, bands or solo artists write tunes with a pan-generational power to connect. Hugely popular Coventry band The Enemy have done that with the title track to this raucous indie guitar cracker of a debut album - originally released in 2007, and going straight to number one in the UK. 'We'll Live And Die In These Towns' has been adopted by the Coventry City football club as their unofficial anthem and is regularly sung with fervor by fans before matches. There's more emotion emanating from the stands when it's sung than the national anthem. It's a song of the people - as important as Billy Bragg's 'A New England'. This track sits as a high point in a tracklist that's no slouch on rabble-rousing hits throughout and it's a reminder of why The Enemy are a national treasure to so many.

Review: Across four heavyweight vinyl records, this archival release traces Nick Drake's journey from solitary Cambridge demos to fully realised studio sessions. The English singer-songwriter's gentle voice and fingerpicked guitarinow synonymous with a kind of pastoral melancholyiemerge in raw, often fragile form. You hear ideas taking shape in real time, like the early sketches of 'Man In A Shed' or the ghostly guide vocal on 'Strange Face'. Recorded between 1968 and 1969, these outtakes and demos predate the original Island Records release and frame the making of his debut through false starts, discarded takes and quiet revelations. The home recordingsiespecially 'Blossom' and 'Made To Love Magic'ifeel like eavesdropping on a soul deep in thought, while later studio attempts edge towards the clarity of the final mixes. With mastering by John Wood and a tactile booklet of notes and timelines, this edition offers a rare, slow-moving immersion into one of English folk's most quietly revered debuts.

Review: Genesis' 1974 release stands as a cornerstone of progressive rock, blending evocative storytelling with layered, intricate arrangements. Peter Gabriel's vocals on what would be his final album with the giants bring the narrative to life, shifting from the reflective tones of 'The Carpet Crawlers' to the defiant energy of 'Back in N.Y.C.'. The instrumentation is equally vividiTony Banks' keyboards set an atmospheric tone, while Phil Collins' dynamic drumming anchors the complex shifts in rhythm and mood. The interplay between Steve Hackett's guitar and Mike Rutherford's bass adds depth to the sprawling soundscapes, delivering a record that still resonates with its bold ambition and emotional scope.

Review: Genesis's 1981 album captures a pivotal moment in the band's evolution, where their progressive roots blend seamlessly with a sleek, radio-friendly sound that defined their 1980s identity. This album showcases the trio's ability to experiment while crafting accessible and compelling tracks. From the dynamic interplay of sharp guitar riffs and smooth organ tones on the title track to the infectious horn-driven groove of 'No Reply at All', Genesis proves their mastery of melody and rhythm. Tony Banks' 'Me and Sarah Jane' evokes the band's earlier prog days with its intricate layers, while 'Keep It Dark' and 'Dodo/Lurker' explore mechanical rhythms and multi-part suites. Phil Collins' heartfelt 'Man on the Corner' pairs poignant lyrics with electronic percussion and Mike Rutherford's 'Like It or Not' transitions beautifully from ballad to bold declaration. Closing with 'Another Record', the album leaves listeners with a punchy, rhythmic finale. Reissued on 180-gram vinyl with gatefold packaging, this edition enhances the listening experience, presenting the music with warmth and clarity. A significant chapter in Genesis's storied career, this album remains a testament to their innovation and adaptability.

Review: This influential band's 1966 debut album is a landmark release that helped shape the trajectory of rock and roll, not only by introducing two of its brightest starsiStephen Stills and Neil Young, but also with its influential mix of folk-rock, country and psychedelia. Notably, 'For What It's Worth'', a track aimed at the counterculture of the time, became a defining anthem of the era. Other tracks like 'Go and Say Goodbye', 'Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing' and 'Hot Dusty Roads' highlight the band's ability to craft memorable, introspective songs. Now reissued on gatefold 180-gram audiophile vinyl, this version offers an opportunity to experience this classic with enhanced sound quality. A crucial part of rock history. It not only marked the beginning of their careers but also paved the way for the iconic collaborations that would follow.

On the A-side, they serve up their own fresh and super funky cover of 'Enter the Dragon,' the iconic theme associated with Bruce Lee and his martial arts masterpiece of the same name. The B-side features their take on 'Misirlou' which is a legendary surf rock track by Dick Dale & The Del-Tones that was made world famous when it was used as the theme from Quentin Taranto's chef d'ouevre, Pulp Fiction. This double-sider is standout for its nostalgic movie associations but also on a purely musical level it oozes class.

Review: Released without a hint of fanfare first time round in 2021, this deeply intimate collaboration between Ukrainian vocalist Yana Pavlova and Berlin-based producer Pavel Milyakov continues to command attention, almost of its own accord. Built out of minimal guitar patterns, submerged dub-influenced bass and spectral saxophone contributions from Alex Zhang Hungtai, the LP unfolds through a mix of improv and aleatory algo-synthesis, where rather than smoothing over imperfections, the artists lean into them; mic rustle, background clicks and ambient irregularities all inform on its dark jazzy, trancelike post-humanoid atmos.

Review: Buffalo Springfield's second album hears a reissue through Analogue Productions US. In the words of AllMusic, this record saw a decentralising of Springfield's band, with a tacit sprawling out of instrumental and production duties by the members informing on this blues folk-tinged, early psychedelic rock magnum. The mood is quotidian but fantastical at the same time: "Every day's a killing time, sun comin' up outside, no matter what this time, Saturday's child stays home..." goes the idling line on 'Everydays', just before a searing distorto-guitar note interrupts and cuts across an otherwise picturesque scene. Smooth to the point of cosmic, the record also benefits from orchestral Americana romances, which hardly signify the to come later: there's no way the idyllic 'Expecting To Fly' could predict the endless twangoffs of 'Hung Upside' for a second.

Review: Public Image Ltd's fourth album followed a messy split with founding guitarist Keith Levene, who'd assumed the songs would be released under contestable (and lesser) name Commercial Zone. John Lydon scrapped the lot and rebuilt from scratch, drafting in session players and keeping only the bones of the original. This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get ended up a stranger, starker listen: 'Bad Life', 'Solitaire' and 'The Order Of Death' emerged re-recorded and shorn of Levene's input, while new additions like 'Tie Me To The Length Of That' stirred earlier lyrical absurdisms from Lydon, and 'This Is Not A Love Song' came as a swipe back at naysayers against Lydon who'd said he'd sold out. The record's title crops up repeatedly, in lyrics and in Copkiller, a shelved film PiL had briefly been attached to and for whose soundtrack This Is What You Want... was for a time intended.

Review: This album was a bold statement in 1985, marking this band leaders transition from frontman of The Police to a solo artist with a distinct musical vision. Now, 40 years later, this anniversary reissue on translucent aqua vinyl reaffirms the album's timeless appeal while honoring the format that first delivered its sonic richness. Stepping away from his former band's signature reggae-tainted sound, Sting embraced jazz influences, enlisting an exceptional lineup of musicians including Branford Marsalis and Omar Hakim. This fusion of pop, rock and jazz gave the album a sophisticated edge, evident in hits like the anthemic 'If You Love Somebody Set Them Free' and the brooding 'Fortress Around Your Heart'. 'Love Is the Seventh Wave' brought a playful, reggae-infused optimism, while 'Russians' showed Sting's political awareness, its Cold War-era message remaining hauntingly relevant. Beyond the hits, the album's depth shines in tracks like 'Moon Over Bourbon Street', a moody, jazz-inspired ballad that demonstrates his knack for storytelling. The reissue's high-quality pressing enhances the album's warmth and clarity, ensuring its intricate arrangements and lyrical poignancy resonate anew. More than a debut, The Dream of the Blue Turtles was a reinventionione that proved Sting's artistry could flourish beyond the confines of a band. This 40th-anniversary edition is both a celebration and a reminder of an artist daring to evolve, crafting music that still moves you four decades later.

Review: Wet Leg is the Grammy-winning Isle of Wight band founded by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, whose 'Chaise Longue' single swept the world before it, followed by a hugely successful debut album in 2022. Here they make a bold return with their second album, Moisturizer, reflecting a tighter, more confident sound honed and shaped by practically non-stop touring. "We were just kind of having fun and exploring," Chambers has said of the process while Teasdale explains, "We focussed on: Is this going to be fun to play live?" Written during an intense creative burst in a remote countryside house, Moisturizer explores themes of obsession and consuming love with raw and visceral guitars, pounding drums and plenty of the outfit's trademark edgy wit.

Review: The latest George Harrison reissuing flurry from BMG flutters forth again, this time focusing on Let It Roll, a brief collection recorded by the "shy Beatle" well into his solo career. Released the day Harrison received his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, the compilation pulls from his Apple and Dark Horse years but omits six of his studio albums entirely. Over chart majors like 'My Sweet Lord', 'Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)', and 'Got My Mind Set On You', alongside three live recordings from the landmark Concert for Bangladesh, this one began as a full-career summary but nonetheless - necessarily - lacked material from Wonderwall Music, Thirty Three & 1/3, and the Traveling Wilburys, resolutely raising eyebrows among fans.

Review: The third solo album by urbanely soulful Sheffield crooner Richard Hawley marked a major breakthrough for the artist, earning him a Mercury Prize nomination. Stylistically, it's hard to imagine Arctic Monkeys' The Car era without Hawley writing this album. Yet despite pedaling a different, more garage rock style at the time, Alex Turner's respect for Hawley goes way back: when the Monkeys pipped Hawley to the post and won, Turner exclaimed, "Someone call 999, Richard Hawley's been robbed!" As for other comparisons, Hawley's similarity to Mark Lanegan's husk is hard to ignore, especially when he lets rip. However, when he delivers softer timbres, like on the serene 'Coles Corner', he evokes Frank Sinatra's decadent tones and the majesty of the string sections are an ornate joy, complementing it perfectly. Turner had a point in his acceptance speech... this is prize-winning stuff and finally getting a thorough reappraisal because of the re-release with half-speed remaster.

Review: Buffalo, New York's psychedelic-swamped guitar band Mercury Rev's debut album, Yerself Is Steam, arrived in 1991, its title riffing on "your self-esteem," pulled from the recurring line in opener 'Chasing A Bee.' That track's eerie video was filmed at a deserted infectious disease hospital on New York's North Brother Island, a place with a haunting history involving Typhoid Mary. 'Car Wash Hair' includes a guest spot from Dean Wareham of Galaxie 500, who also helped with recording after bassist Dave Fridmann reportedly spent the band's advance on vacation. The album's sprawling centerpiece, 'Very Sleepy Rivers,' uses a river metaphor to explore a serial killer's chilling calm before eruption. Praised for its hypnotic, dissonant slacker sensibility, and leaden with crescendoing brass, it echoes a dozier, relatively nostalgic teen take on Neutral Milk Hotel.

Jonathan Higgs' vocals and the band's intricate instrumentation drive its bold, high-energy sound and are in part why it was critically praised for its ambition and innovation. Listening back now ,it is as urgent and thrilling as ever.

Tracks II: The Lost Albums
Cat: 194399 50151. Rel: 27 Jun 25
Review: Springsteen's place in music history is undeniable i a legendary figure whose songwriting has captured the heart, hope and heartbreak of American life for over five decades. With Tracks II: The Lost Albums, Springsteen opens the vault once again, offering fans an extraordinary glimpse into seven unreleased albums (80 tracks in total) spanning from the mid-70s to the 2000s. Rather than a simple outtakes collection, Tracks II feels like discovering entire new chapters of the Springsteen story. Across the compilation, you hear an artist constantly evolving i from the dusty romanticism of The Ties That Bind sessions to the raw urgency of the Born in the U.S.A. era demos. Songs like 'American Beauty' and 'Party Lights' showcase Springsteen's knack for creating melodies that feel instantly familiar yet deeply personal. The variety across the nine albums is striking. There are intimate acoustic sketches, full-throttle E Street Band anthems and brooding late-night confessionals. The production quality is strong throughout, preserving the raw spirit of the recordings while giving them a polished shine. Springsteen's voice i at turns weathered, fiery, tender i remains the heart of the collection. Lyrically, the themes of working-class dreams, lost love, redemption and perseverance remain constants, binding this sprawling set together. Tracks II isn't just for diehards; it's an example to Springsteen's restless creativity and enduring spirit. A gift to fans and a reminder of why his music remains timeless.

Review: Goth ghastlies The Sisters Of Mercy mark the four-decadal existence of their debut album with a 4xLP box set, which doesn't stop the flow, tracing its fallout alongside the full First And Last And Always album, followed by the band's three most formative EPs: 'Body And Soul', 'Walk Away' and 'No Time To Cry'. The Leeds-born outfit, led by grisly guitarist Gary Marx and vorpal vocalist Andrew Eldritch (sadly not his real name), carved their dark post-punk path from 1980, reaching a wider audience with this 1985 release. This new pandora's box helps capture the pivotal moment when their underground cult began to swell.

Review: Recorded mostly live with long-time collaborator Ed Buller, Suede's tenth full-length has been described as "broken music for broken people", pivoting from the volatile grit of Autofiction into a brooding post-punk mood channelling urban unease, digital detachment and twitchy self-reflection. Bassist Mat Osman calls it "a big stage record", with widescreen arrangements built for scale, inciting through such lead singles as 'Disintegrate' its listeners to "feel the rage". Alongside the release, Suede Takeover hits London in September, culminating in a full orchestral show with large-scale ensemble Paraorchestra; it's set to be an explosive excoriation of the present system.

Review: Bill Orcutt is hailed the world over for his distinctive blues-infused, free improvisational acoustic guitar rah, a craft he's honed since his 2009 solo record A New Way To Pay Old Debts, which marked his return to music after the dissolution of the influential noise rock band Harry Pussy. Beyond music, Orcutt worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley for over 20 years; and suitably, his more recent works have introduced homespun analogue guitar work to the art of electronic estrangement, technocratizing a formerly scruffy sound. After the experimental 2011 release 'Let's Build A Pussy', through which he manipulated a second-long "drum vocal" into an hour-long piece, here he further embraces the encroaching tide of digital tech with 'A Mechanical Joey', yet another 35-minute track spread over two antipodean sides; this one involves an outsider-arty, heteroclitic manipulation of a six-time Joey Ramone sample.

This record was co-produced with Jim-E Stack and features contributions from Devonte Hynes, Dan Nigro, Fabiana Palladino, Buddy Ross and Andrew Aged, which the tracks are alive with raw lyricism and intimate atmospheres. Lead single 'What Was That' hit #1 on the US Spotify Chart and set the tone for a collection that's both emotionally piercing and rhythmically charged. Blending hushed introspection with club-ready tension, Virgin is sleek yet soulful and underlines Lorde's enduring power as a generational voiceian artist capable of shaping pop on her own terms.

Upgrade & Afterlife (reissue)
Cat: DC 90. Rel: 20 Jun 25
Review: Gastr del Sol's 1996 pivot point gets a fresh double vinyl pressing via Drag City, nearly three decades on. Upgrade & Afterlife mapped out a more expansive terrain for David Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke, then deep in collaborative drift post-Bastro, Red Krayola, and Squirrel Bait. 'Our Exquisite Replica of "Eternity"' opens with abstract shimmer, while 'Rebecca Sylvester' filters gamelan-inflected structure through a soft-focus vocal haze. 'The Sea Incertain' winks at Crookt, Crackt, or Fly's 'The C in Cake' with scrambled electronics and wry abstraction. The closer reworks John Fahey via violin drone (Tony Conrad) and skeletal piano. With appearances from Tortoise's John McEntire, Mats Gustafsson and Ralf Wehowsky, this was their most briskly moving LP on release, wrapped in Roman Signer's 'Wasserstiefel' and stretched taut between clarity and collapse.

Some Kind Of Stranger
Review: When this album arrived in 1985, it wasn't just the debut album from a band, it was the defining blueprint for what goth rock would come to represent. Cloaked in shadow, melancholy and muscular drum programming, the record fused post-punk disaffection with a dramatic romanticism that felt cinematic and confrontational. Nearly four decades on, its sound remains remarkably vital making this reissue very desirable. Andrew Eldritch's unmistakable baritone anchors the album, his presence looming over the entire record. But it's the interplay with the original lineup - that includes future members of The Mission - that gives the songs their haunting depth and tension. Tracks like 'Marian' and 'Some Kind of Stranger' are goth classics with their synth-laced atmosphere while 'Black Planet' and 'Walk Away' throb with a dark, driving energy that defines industrial sound. The production gives each element room to breathe in the final mix, while the drum machine feels human in its relentlessness, as guitars shimmer and slash and Eldritch stands at the center like a prophet in a leather trenchcoat. An album of mood and menace, elegance and dread, time has not dulled its impact.

Review: The reissue of New Miserable Experience is sure to bring renewed attention to American alt-rock outfit Gin Blossoms' bittersweet breakthrough. Behind the 1992 album's sunny melodies lies a tragic story in which founding guitarist Doug Hopkins, who penned the band's biggest hits, was fired before the record's success and later took his own life. Songs like 'Hey Jealousy' and 'Found Out About You' capture a raw emotional turbulence that's masked by sparkling guitars and Robin Wilson's tender vocals. All these years on, the music remains a testament to Hopkins' brilliance and pain and so New Miserable Experience endures as a jangled, heartbreaking classic of the 90s.

Review: Originally released in 2005, Hard-Fi's Stars of CCTV album is now reissued to make its 20th anniversary and remind us why it became a defining album of mid-2000s British indie rock. Part of that is the way it blends gritty urban realism with anthemic hooks and genre-blurring influences from rock, punk and beyond. Tracks like 'Hard to Beat,' the era-defining ode to hedonism 'Living for the Weekend' and the title track still pack punch and reflect the working-class angst and nightlife highs of a generation. Remastered and sounding sharper than ever, Stars of CCTV was a raw, energetic debut that captured the spirit of suburban rebellion.

Review: Wet Leg is the Grammy-winning Isle of Wight band founded by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers and after that hugely successful debut album in 2022, they make a bold return with their second album, Moisturizer. Joined by Ellis Durand, Henry Holmes, and Joshua Mobaraki, the group has evolved into a powerful live act which is very much reflected in this record's tighter, more confident sound. "We were just kind of having fun and exploring," Chambers has said of the process while Teasdale explains, "We focussed on: Is this going to be fun to play live?" Written during an intense creative burst in a remote countryside house, Moisturizer explores themes of obsession and consuming love with raw and visceral guitars, pounding drums and plenty of the outfit's trademark wit and edge.

Review: Tacoma garage rock legends The Sonics are revisited here across seven 7" singles, covering their key material from 1964 to 1966. The set includes foundational tracks from the Etiquette years - 'The Witch', 'Psycho', and 'Strychnine' - alongside Jerden-era cuts like 'Head On Backwards' and 'Like No Other Man', all remastered and sequenced with clarity. It's the first time material from both periods has been presented together on vinyl. 'Keep A Knockin' and 'Louie Louie' sit comfortably beside the band's originals, which are leaner, noisier, and often more aggressive. 'Boss Hoss', 'Cinderella', and 'Shot Down' showcase the group's punchy rhythm section and blown-out recording style, while 'Have Love Will Travel' and 'High Time' ride the line between r&b cover and full distortion assault. 'Maintaining My Cool', long circulating in other formats, makes its vinyl debut here in its rare Audio Recording version. The pressing includes a booklet with photography by Jini Dellaccio, but the real appeal is in the sequencing - no filler, no novelty, just the most direct catalogue survey of a band that never needed polishing.

Review: He's played with everyone from Bowie, Lou Reed and Lennon - just the tip of a truly humungous session work iceberg - as well as his longstanding service with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel, but Tony Levin's more than capable of whipping up a musical storm without any celebrity help. This is the bassist's latest solo affair, released in September 2024 and, together with a lengthy list of collaborators - among them KC guitarist Robert Fripp - it bends jazz, funk, rock and experimental soundscapery into numerous new shapes. 'Give The Cello Some' is a delight, answering the question "what kind of music would ZZ Top make if they were fronted by Captain Beefheart?" 'Road Dogs' kicks off half metal riffing, half Krautrock linear grooving before hitting a prog/jazz interface and 'Beyond The Bass Clef' is a serene, beatless, almost classical piece. Full of surprises, this is the sound of a master of the bass game following no-one else's lead for a change - and loving every moment.

Review: Rod Stewart's voice has always sounded like it's just crawled out of a Soho bar fight - gravelly, charming and faintly ridiculous. But somehow, it still gets you. This new compilation, spanning everything from his 70s bar-room soul to recent swing experiments, is a reminder of just how strange and compelling his career has been. Few singers could convincingly move from 'Maggie May' to 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?' to 'Rhythm of My Heart' without seeming like a novelty act. Fewer still could make it all hang together with any sense of emotional truth. Born in London and once a failed footballer, Stewart turned rascal energy into stadium-filling charisma. The early material - with Python Lee Jackson, with the Faces, or solo - still feels beautifully tossed-off, full of unfiltered ache. Later tracks lean into gloss and schmaltz, sometimes to great effect and sometimes less so. But taken as a whole, this is a portrait of a singer who never quite gave up on the idea that pop music could be both daft and devastating. It's not cool, and it's not trying to be. That's the charm. If you're not moved by something here, you're either too young or trying far too hard.

Review: One of the defining moments of the 90s Welsh indie pop band's career, their fourth album arrived at a time of profound personal loss - the death of drummer Jon Lee - marking a shift in both their sound and emotional direction. The album sees them shifting from raw energy to a more reflective mood that captures their journey through grief, translating it into a refined blend of alternative rock. The production is sharp, with standout tracks like the anthemic 'Just the Way I Am' showcasing an evolving sophistication, while the melancholic 'Tide of Change' and 'Forget About Tomorrow' - complete with orchestral backing - offers introspective moments. But despite the challenging backdrop, the album flows with a sense of optimism too, highlighted by the rousing 'Full Circle'. This expanded version is a celebration of a pivotal period in their legacy, as well as containing a stack of tunes that helped define the era.

Review: In today's all-go culture, quitting is frowned upon. Ironically, the new 15-track rock-leaning album from Haim, produced by Danielle Haim and Rostam Batmanglij, hardly hears so much a scrap of towel thrown in. It follows a reconvening by the trio in early 2023, and a nudging hint via social media at an upcoming Jai Paul collab. Alana Haim described this record as "the closest (they) have ever gotten to how (they) wanted to sound," marking a notable shift from their previous work. Paul Thomas Anderson returns to shoot the album cover, continuing his creative partnership with the band after Alana starred in his most seventies teen drama Licorice Pizza.
